– T-Rating: Max. temp. rise of 325 °F above ambient on the non-fireside

– F-Rating: Prohibits flame passage through the system for the duration of the fire test.

– L-Rating: Amount of air leakage

What is a Firestop What is a Firestop System?System?


A firestop system is a specific construction consisting of a wall or floor assembly, a penetrating item passing through an opening in the wall or floor assembly, and the materials designed to prevent the spread of fire through the openings.


Time is the key in Fire Protection Systems. In construction of buildings, fire-rated walls

and floors of various materials have requirements of being penetrated by many

different items such as pipes, cables and HVAC ducts. These constructions require the correct through penetration (Firestop )

system to provide the fire protection needed.


The following slides depict a building and the areas within that building that might require firestopping. Joints are shown as well as through stop application even though this presentation is geared toward only through stop applications.

Firestop systems are not merely the tube of caulk bearing the UL classification symbol.

The firestop system consists of a TESTED and APPROVED method of installation which includes size of opening, maximum penetrating item number and size, depths of forming material and or sealants or firestop devices required.

Install Nelson Pipe Choke around the pipe on the underside of the floor or to each side of the wall. Tighten around pipe and bend tabs to lock in place.

Secure the Pipe Choke to the floor or wall using appropriate anchor into each of the anchoring tabs.

For wall assemblies, Install Nelson Pipe Choke on both sides of the wall.

Install or pack the appropriate backing material around pipe allowing for caulk fill depth.

Trowel surface smooth with wall. (Point of contact systems require a bead.)

Gun, pump or trowel Nelson firestopping sealant to required depth. (Both sides if wall)

In an empty mixing container, add the appropriate amount of water.

Trowel surface smooth with wall. Add dry Mortar and mix material by hand or power tool.
