Welcome from the Chairman of the Board

The Community Chamber of Commerce of East Montgomery County would like to welcome you to our area. This community guide and membership directory is provided to you by the members advertising in it. Please call upon them for the goods and services you need.

This is an exciting time to be involved in the growth in East Montgomery County. Over 440 members are working together to enhance the economic growth and stability of the area. The rapid growth over the last few years shows no signs of letting up – in fact it is increas-ing. Our schools and community college are experienc-ing record enrollment increases and housing starts and completions continue to be strong. All of these factors are having a positive impact on our local economy.

The Chamber, through its board members, committees and volunteers, works closely with our three local school districts and community college to provide the highest quality education possible. New workforce training opportunities have been developed that provide meaningful training for area citizens, thus improving these individuals quality of life.

The East Montgomery County Improvement District provides economic and com-munity development programs through revenues generated from the local sales tax. Our local elected officials are also strong supporters of the area and its programs.

All of us working together is what makes East Montgomery County strong. Shar-ing the responsibility of building a strong community is critically important to our success.

Welcome to East Montgomery County.Eight distinct communities make up what is often called “East County”. The

communities of Porter, New Caney, Splendora, Roman Forest, Woodbranch Village, Patton Village, Grangerland, and a portion of Kingwood are located in the area. The area is predominately “un-incorporated” thus most requirements such as permitting, etc. fall under the guidelines established by Montgomery County. A significant por-tion of the area falls under the City of Houston’s extraterritorial jurisdiction policies. There are four incorporated cities; Patton Village, Roman Forest, Splendora and Woodbranch Village within the area.

Residents and visitors alike enjoy the diversity of lifestyles found in the East Mont-gomery County area. The moderate climate, natural resources of parks, nearby lakes, and the gulf coast enhance year-round recreation opportunities. The close proximity

to the cultural and social amenities within the City of Houston, as well as the recreational op-portunities found on Lake Conroe, Lake Houston and Lake Livingston provide area residents a wide range of activities.

The area has a strong medical services component. Kingwood Medical Center and its associated operations comprise the largest health entity physically within “East County”. Six other hospitals in neighboring cities also serve residents. These include Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital in Humble, Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Conroe Regional Medical Center, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands, St. Luke’s Episcopal The Woodlands and St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital in The Woodlands. Dr. Barry G. Willens’ clinic in New Caney, the East Montgomery County Community Clinic in Splendora and several other Doctors and clinics are also in the area.STATISTICAL BRAGGING POINTS

The East Montgomery County area has seen significant growth in population over the last twenty years with New Caney, Porter and Splendora zip codes showing an 86.33% increase in population. This has had a significant impact on our public school system and the vot-ers within New Caney and Splendora ISD’s have responded to this growth by passing bond referendums to meet the continuing educational needs of their students. This will be covered further under the education section.DRIVE-TIME DATA

The drive-time to downtown Houston from Porter/New Caney is approximately thirty minutes or less along Hwy 59. Construction has recently been completed on Hwy 59 to the Liberty County line.ACRES OF RAW LAND

The area still contains thousands of areas of raw land. In the Porter area in excess of three thousand areas are available. In the New Caney area over two thousand areas are available and in the Splendora area approximately eleven thousand areas of raw land is still available for development. Many smaller tracts of fifty acres or less are also available and many with Hwy 59 or Loop 494 frontage.TRANSPORTATION

US Highway 59 is the main north/south roadway running through the area with state high-ways 242 and 105 along with FM roads 1314, 1485, and 2090 traversing the area east and west. Highway 59 has often been called the most busy non interstate roadway in the country and it brings “East County” within close proximity to not only downtown Houston but to Bush Intercontinental Airport and to the Port of Houston. The final environmental impact state-ments for the proposed Grand Parkway (Hwy 99), a third loop, around Houston have been developed with construction schedules still to be determined. Major rail line service runs through the area as well.

Over 70,000 cars per day pass through the intersection of Highway 59 and FM1314, with 51,000 per day at Hwy 59 and FM1485. At the Harris/Montgomery County line 142,000 cars cross that area.

Improvements to Hwy 59, FM1314 and FM1485 have been completed with Hwy 59 being built to interstate standards. Hwy 59 includes three to four traffic lanes in each direction and two to three lane feeder roads along each side, dependent upon the area, all the way to the Liberty County line to the north. FM1314 in Porter has been widened to four lanes from Loop 494 to one mile south of Hwy 242. FM1485 has been widened to four lanes from Loop 494 to Kidd-Cemetery Road in New Caney.

The Montgomery County Toll Road Authority was formed in 2007 to establish and build additional toll roads in the county. Four initial projects have been identified including; a direct connector at Hwy 242 and Interstate 45, a north/south connector to the Grand Parkway (two phases), and establishing toll lanes adjacent to the lanes of Hwy 242.

East Montgomery County - Our HistorySpanish missionaries and conquistadors settled in the area and in 1837 Montgomery

County was established by Governor Sam Houston. Montgomery County was the third county established in the Republic of Texas.

Located across the east fork of the San Jacinto River, East Montgomery County has a rich history as well, with some of the earliest settlers making their way here in the 1860’s. Over the years other communities including Porter, New Caney, Splendora, and Grangerland were started and continue to thrive today. Following the develop-ment of Bush Intercontinental Airport on the north side of Houston new subdivi-sions began and brought Roman Forest, Woodbranch Village, Patton Village, and Kingwood.

In the early 1840’s settlers were drawn to this area by the large timber stands covering the land. Sawmills became the main economic force. Located on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad the community of Porter was originally called Porter Mill, after the first sawmill in the area. Just up the road Presswood and the Boggy District were founded. In 1862 Captain John Robertson petitioned the Post Office for the name Caney, Texas but found out that there was al-ready a town with the same name, thus the name New Caney was established to avoid confusion with the other town. In 1907 Dr. Edwin Granger founded the area known as Grangerland. A cotton gin was built, and his sons S.D. and Wyn built “Granger Camp” for the oil field families. Splendora, just six miles north of New Caney, was developed in the 1880’s by Charles Cox. It became known as Cox’s Switch since Mr. Cox was instrumental in having the HE&WT Railroad put in a narrow gauge spur from Houston for crossties and lumber, resulting in many railroad and lumber related jobs. In 1886, Mr. Cox asked Postmaster M Z King to rename the town Splendora because of the “splendor of its floral environment”.

Patton Village was developed by William Patton in the 1950’s as the area’s first real estate development. In the 1960’s Woodbranch Village and Roman Forest, Houston’s “satellite city” became the area’s more restricted real estate developments. Over the last forty years Kingwood and other developments have been established. Kingwood became one of the most successful master planned communities in the nation and today is home to more than 70,000 residents.

In 1994, a 4,919.5 acre state park with 2,404 acres in East Montgomery County was opened. Entrance to the park is just east of New Caney on FM1485. Also that year, Highway 242 was opened, connecting the area to Interstate 45 and the western portion of the county.

Our convenient location, less than thirty miles northeast of downtown Houston along U S Highway 59, East Montgomery County is experiencing robust population and commercial growth. Numerous new subdivisions and expansion of existing developments are underway. New commercial tracts are being developed as well.

Located less than twenty minutes from George Bush Intercontinental Airport and close to the Port of Houston the area is a prime location for commercial and residen-tial development.

The Economy and Economic DevelopmentMore than 60,000 people live in the trade area, and the major markets of Houston,

Conroe, and The Woodlands are less than thirty minutes away. The area’s labor force is one of its primary assets. An abundance of workers with strong work ethics in a broad range of professions are available.

Montgomery County’s economy is very strong and continues to strengthen each year. The continued growth of the entire county and especially the anticipated growth in East Montgomery County is very exciting.

Montgomery County is ranked as the 5th fastest growing county in Texas and 28th in the nation with its populations more than doubling in the last twenty years. With a growth rate of between five and six percent per annum the current population of approximately 500,000 and is projected to top 800,000 in the next twenty-five years. The entire greater Houston region is experiencing this same growth with a projected 1.4 million new households and 1.5 million new jobs over the next twenty-five years.

The East Montgomery County area is fast becoming one of the focal points for development in the greater Houston region. Considering its close proximity to Bush Intercontinental Airport, the Port of Houston, downtown Houston and other re-gional economic centers the area has seen rapid growth in the last two years.

While this is exciting, it also requires planning. Regional planning is being led by the Houston Galveston Area Council (HGAC) and involves citizens from across the region meeting to discuss growth issues. Infrastructure and particularly transporta-tion planning is critical to the future of the region. Montgomery County voters overwhelmingly passed a $100 million bond referendum in 2005 to upgrade desig-nated roads throughout the county. In addition $60 million was approved to improve numerous county roads throughout the county. US Hwy 59 and Interstate 45 are also being improved to meet the increased demands with Hwy 59 soon to be completed to interstate standards.

Several new projects, both residential and commercial, are currently being devel-oped. Instrumental in these projects are regional developers such as Friendswood Development Company, The Signorelli Company, Marlin/Atlantis, Hendricks Inter-ests, Gulf Coast Commercial and others. Projects include residential subdivisions, commercial tracts, or both in several cases. Home prices range from the $90’s to the $800,000’s. Significant among these residential developments are Oakhurst at King-wood and Valley Ranch. The Valley Ranch Town Center project will give Porter/New Caney a “downtown” that will attract visitors from surrounding areas. Numerous nationally known home builders are currently building in these area developments. Here is a sampling.OAKHURST AT KINGWOOD

Oakhurst at Kingwood encompasses some 1,400 lots and is located south of FM1314 and just north of Northpark Drive. The development’s homes range in price from the $150,000s to the $800,000s. Also located within the development is the beautiful and challenging Oakhurst Golf Club. Privately owned and separate from the development the course is a daily fee course open to the public. The development also features a community pool and club building that is open to the residents. Several well known home builders are actively building in this development. Oakhurst at Kingwood is a development of Friendswood Development Company. VALLEY RANCH

The Valley Ranch project includes over 3,000 lots, 300 plus apartment units, and 1,000,000 square feet of retail space and will give Porter/New Caney a “downtown” that will attract visitors from surrounding areas. construction of the Grand Parkway or Hwy 99. The Grand Parkway will be the third loop around Houston and provide quick access (13.6 miles) to Interstate 45. Construction of Segment G (from I-45 to US Hwy 59) is still to be determined. Homes in the development currently range in price from the $140’s to the $400’s. The project covers some 1,300 plus acres located from north of the proposed route of the Grand Parkway to just north of FM 1314 in Porter. The acreage surrounds New Caney ISD’s sixth grade campus as well as Valley Ranch Elementary and the football and baseball stadiums. The Villas at Valley Ranch, a luxury apartment complex, opened in the fall of 2008. Valley Ranch is a project of The Signorelli Company of Conroe.

The growth in East Montgomery County also has an impact on the regional economic well being as many of the homes that are being built will be purchased by people who will work in Harris County, and at the same time, many of the new jobs being created will be manned by people who live in neighboring counties and commute into East Montgomery County to work. Growth and development throughout the north Houston region has a significant impact on our area. By working together with our friends and neighbors we can accomplish much!

East Montgomery County Improvement DistrictThe East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) was created by special legis-

lation in 1997. Upon approval by the state legislature the voters within the boundaries of New Caney and Splendora school districts passed a referendum to create the district and for them to collect a one cent sales tax on applicable goods and services. In 2009 citizens approved an additional half cent sales tax for the district. The district, commonly known as EMCID, uses those funds for both economic and community development projects. The district has enjoyed many successes since its creation and proudly counts the location of the Wal-Mart Distribution Center among its successful efforts. Their industrial park encompasses some 400 plus acres and is now the home to several light industrial businesses including businesses from Mexico and France. EMCID continues to actively market the area by attending national trade shows and industry shows to share the great things that are happening in East Montgomery County.

The most significant project underway is Global EarthQuest Ventures which will include an interactive theme park, hotel/convention center, numerous restaurants, residential develop-ment and other amenities, plus the EarthQuest Institute. This $1.5 billion project alone will change the economic model for East Montgomery County. Global EarthQuest Ventures will be built in phases with phase one possibly beginning in the summer of 2011. This project will bring some 2,700 jobs in just phase one. The entire project is centered around sustainable “green” technology.

The retail development in EarthQuest coupled with the development of the Valley Ranch Town Center and other local retail centers the area will become a hub for retail sales.

Graduating seniors from New Caney and Splendora schools, local home schooled students, private school graduates (within the EMCID district) and adults receiving their GED (and live within EMCID’s district) are eligible for $1,000 college scholarships. These funds can be used at any accredited college, technical school, or university in the country. These funds come from the community development dollars. The EMC Scholarship Foundation (a 501c3 non-profit education foundation) has been established to administer these dollars and scholarships.

Community development grants to local organizations are also considered twice each year. An application for funds is required as well as various reporting requirements if funds are received. During the fiscal year 2008-2009 a total of $369,000 in community development grants were awarded.

Incentives can also be granted by EMCID to eligible businesses for both start up or existing businesses. In cooperation with Montgomery County these incentives assist in the recruitment of new and expanded businesses to the area.

EMCID is governed by an eight member board, elected by the voters within New Caney

HOTEL/MOTEL TAXThe East Montgomery County Improvement District collects a 7.00% hotel/motel tax on

room rentals within the boundaries of the district.TAX ABATEMENTS AND INCENTIVES

East Montgomery County Improvement District (EMCID) offers incentives to companies locating within their jurisdictional boundaries (as defined previously). Each situation is on a case-by-case basis and varies based on the number of jobs created, capital improvements made, etc.

Montgomery County also offers tax abatements to parties that meet their requirements. The county, under the direction of J. R. Moore, Jr., Tax Assessor & Collector, will present his find-ings and/or recommendations to Commissioner’s Court for consideration.

All three independent school districts and the college district are pro-business and welcome new entities into the area, even though they cannot grant incentives or abatements under cur-rent state law.

The formation of municipal utility districts is also possible with the assistance of our State Representatives and State Senators support. With the legislature only meeting in odd num-bered years this process is more time sensitive than dealing with EMCID or Montgomery County.

EducationPublic school education is provided by three highly respected independent school

districts; New Caney ISD, Splendora ISD, and the Caney Creek feeder zone of Conroe ISD.

Both New Caney and Splendora ISDs are planning for the future and passed bond referendums in the spring of 2007. Through citizen input both districts utilized facilities study committees to determine the direction the district should take for the next several years. Conroe ISD voters passed a $527 million bond referendum in 2008 to keep up with its growth. All the public schools in the area are conscious of the challenges of increasing growth in the whole area. Conroe ISD was named and “exemplary” district in 2010 and is the largest district in Texas to achieve that level. New Caney ISD has achieved “recognized” status as a district for nine of the last ten years according to the Texas Education Agency. Splendora ISD was also named a “recognized” district in 2010 reaching a new milestone with this recognition. CONROE ISD (CANEY CREEK FEEDER ZONE)

Conroe ISD is a 348-square mile school district located in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area. The geographic areas of the District are diverse and include The Woodlands, Oak Ridge North, Conroe, and Caney Creek, as well as several other smaller towns, communities, and unincorporated areas. CISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in the State with an average enrollment growth of over 1,500 per year.

The Caney Creek Feeder Zone occupies the northeast quadrant of the school dis-trict and is projected to experience contin-ued growth through the next several years. The feeder zone has seen several additions and new facilities over recent years to ac-commodate future growth. Schools in this zone include Caney Creek High School, Moorhead Junior High, Grangerland Inter-mediate, Austin Elementary, Creighton Elementary, Milam Elementary, and San Jacinto Elementary. The Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating for 2010 Caney Creek High, Moorhead Junior High, Creighton Elementary, Milam Elementary and San Jacinto Elementary with a “recog-nized:” rating.

Conroe ISD has continued to excel in all areas throughout the district. Over the past several years, achievement scores have increased and are well above the state and national averages. The 2010 District Accountability Rating from the Texas Educa-tion Agency earned CISD an academic rating of Exemplary. CISD is an exceptional place to learn and grow. NEW CANEY ISDThe New Caney Independent School District is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Houston in East

Montgomery County serving the residents in the Porter, New Caney, and a portion of the Kingwood communities.The District is one of the largest employers in Montgomery County with a history of steady growth of housing

and business development. Parent and community involvement is committed to ensuring student success. New Caney ISD voters have a strong sense of support for the district and have passed three consecutive bond referen-dums with three to one margins. In the fall of 2010 the district opened Porter High School, the second high school in the district. The ninth elementary campus is under construction and will open in the fall of 2011. Discussions are underway regarding this new elementary with respect to it being designated as a “flex” campus for the whole district offering very specialized programs.

New Caney ISD has been a Recognized district for nine of the last ten years. Splendora ISD is making changes! Under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Price, and the establishment of new goals set by the Board of Trustees, the district is looking forward to great things at Splendora. The five campuses (Peach Creek Elementary, Greenleaf Elementary, Piney Woods Elementary, Splendora Junior High, and Splendora High School) have a total enrollment of approximately 3500 students. Splendora ISD was named a “recognized” district by TEA in 2010. For 2009-2010, Splendora ISD achieved “recognized” status for the first time. In addition all five of its campuses also earned “recognized” status, including Greenleaf Elementary, Peach Creek Elementary, Piney Woods Elementary, Splendora Junior High, and Splendora High School.

The district’s career pathways initiative allows 5th -12th grade students the op-portunity to investigate and discuss with counselors future career opportunities. The initiative also allows district admin-istrators to anticipate students’ interest levels for courses being offered and plan according to those interests.

New course offerings, new programs, and new secondary schedules, are bringing excitement to our junior and senior high schools. Our career and tech-nology (CT) academies offers new courses such as cosmetology, culinary arts, criminal justice, and sports/entertain-ment management along with existing courses of agribusiness and health science occupations.

Beginning with the 2009-10 school year Splendora High School began its early high school program (at that time they were one of only 41 early college high schools in the state of Texas to have this program) . This program allows students to graduate with both a distinguished diploma and an Associate’s degree (at no financial cost to the student). Students enter the program as freshman and take courses throughout their high school years to complete the program.

LONE STAR COLLEGE - KINGWOODHigher education opportunities are available through Lone Star College - Kingwood a member of the Lone Star

College System. Located on a beautiful 264-acre wooded site at 20000 Kingwood Drive the two-year community college offers numerous associate degree programs as well as transfer courses, career and vocational programs, and distance learning, as well as an extensive Continuing Education program for youth and adults. Founded in 1984 the college also offers outreach on two area high school campuses in Cleveland and Atascocita.

The Lone Star College System reported 49,267 students in credit classes in fall of 2007, an increase of 24,000 since 2000. Enroll-ment is up 6 percent over last year. If current enrollment trends continue the system will reach 72,000 in credit classes in 2015. The system is opening doors to students of all ages throughout 1,400 square mile service area.

LSC-Kingwood is also continuing to grow with record enrollment experienced during the fall of 2010, an increase of over 25% from the fall of 2009. The Lone Star College System passed a $420 million bond referendum in 2009 to build additional facilities to keep up with it student growth across the entire system. New facilities at the Kingwood campus will include a new student and conference center, Atascocita satellite campus and traffic infrastructure, arts instructional building and numerous renovations to existing facilities and traffic infrastructure.

The Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) associated with Lone Star College - Kingwood and housed at the EM-CID complex is open to adults age 50 and older. An annual membership fee of $10 allows ALL members to attend unlimited classes and programs. ALL membership continues to increase and stands at over 900 today. PRIVATE EDUCATION

Private schools in the area provide parents with additional choices to more specifically meet their child’s needs. These schools vary in terms of philosophy of education, size, structure and cost and each offers a unique approach to education. Mission Northeast (The Mission)

The Mission, a local community non-profit agency offers GED classes as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to area citizens. We are very proud of each of our educational institutions. Opened in March, 2007 this 30,000 square foot facility is a state of the art library. Governance and Public SafetyThe cities of Patton Village, Roman Forest, Splendora, and Woodbranch Village

are the four incorporated cities in the area and have their own police departments and provide patrol and response within their respective jurisdictions. The city of Cut N Shoot sits on the northwestern edge of the Chamber’s service area.

All the other area is unincorpo-rated and under the governance of Montgomery County. The Mont-gomery County Sheriff ’s office and Constable Precinct 4 provide public safety resources.

Ambulance service is provided by the Montgomery County Hospital District.

Fire safety is provided by Mont-gomery County Emergency Services Districts 6, 7 and 11 (Porter Fire Deptartment, New Caney Fire Department, Splendora Fire Depart-ment) as well as the Grangerland fire district.

Permitting is through Montgom-ery County with some areas falling under the jurisdiction of the City of Houston.

LAKE HOUSTON WILDERNESS PARKLake Houston Wilderness Park, 22031 Baptist Encampment Road - New Caney, is

operated by the Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD). This 4,919.5 acre wilderness park was transferred to the City of Houston in 2006 by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. HPARD in partnership with Montgomery County Precinct 4 Commissioner Ed Rinehart and the Houston Parks Board are working together to develop Lake Houston Wilderness Park into an urban preserve where visitors of all ages can experience the forest environment and develop an appreciation for the wilderness, ecosystem and inhabitants.

Lake Houston Wilderness Park activities include camping (in cabins or walk-in sites which are available for rental), hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and horseback riding (Bring your own bikes, watercraft, and horses). Please note that Lake Houston Park is a wilderness park and is heavily forested and home to various forms of wild-life including several species of snakes. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately. The Lake Houston Wilderness Park Nature Center provides classes and opportuni-ties for visitors of all ages to learn more about the natural world of the park and its wildlife inhabitants.

What Does the Chamber Do?The Community Chamber of Commerce of East Montgomery County was founded in 1990

and celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2010. Governed by a fifteen member board of directors the Chamber’s mission is to promote the economic well being and quality of life of East Montgomery County.

The Chamber kicks off each year honor-ing its members who have helped further the goals of the Chamber at the Annual Banquet. The highlight of the evening recognizes our Hometown Heroes and the Small and Large Businesses of the Year. These honorees are nominated from the entire membership and represent the best of the best. The banquet also recognizes the services of our outgoing Board Chair and retiring board members as well as the Board Member of the Year and the Volunteer of the Year.

The annual Taste of East Montgomery County & Expo is held in the spring and features the best cooks in the area. Chamber members are encouraged to participate and network with the community.

The fifth annual Texas Sawmill Festival is scheduled for April 16, 2011. The fourth annual festival was held April, 2010 with over 3,000 attendees. This FREE community event takes citizens and visitors back to the early days of East Montgomery County through visits to the “old sawmill town” display, historical displays, and reenactments from that era. The goal for the festival is for it to continue as an annual event and expand to a full weekend event. The festival committee will continue to work year round to critique and enhance the festival to achieve its long term goal.

Our annual Golf Tournament is held on the third Thursday of October each year at the beautiful Oakhurst Golf Club. Featuring a morning of golf followed by lunch this event is an excellent marketing and networking opportunity for our members.

A new event was started in 2010 known as Wine, Hawgs & Chocolate and proved to be a fantastic experience. Hosted by the local Harley Davidson dealership and featuring only Texas wines it was certainly a hit with area citizens. This event will continue annually in November each year.

Small Business Seminars are held periodically during the year. The seminars are designed to provide the small business owner valuable information to assist them in the growth of their business. These seminars are held in partnership with the East Montgomery County Improve-ment District and the Small Business Development Center of the Lone Star College System.

The Chamber also serves as a center for information for both residents and visitors. Conve-niently located along Highway 59 the Chamber is a central point for items such as demograph-ic information, visitor’s guides, maps of the area, and information on our members. This new information directory and map is also an important part of the service we provide.

The Chamber represents over 440 members—all interested in making East Montgomery County a better, more vital place to live, work and play. The Chamber is a non-profit commu-nity service organization which operates on membership dues and dollars generated from the various special events previously listed.

In the spring of 2009 the Chamber launched its Shop Locally program and introduced www.shopemctx.com which will take visitors to that address directly to the membership page on the Chamber website (www.communitychamberemc.com).

Through Ribbon Cuttings, Grand Openings, and Groundbreakings the Chamber welcomes the opportunity to assist you with events celebrating your business opening, expansion, reloca-tion or anniversary. The Chamber staff and volunteers are available weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm to emcee your ribbon cutting, grand opening, groundbreaking or other special event. We will help you spread the word about your event through our newsletter Chamber Connections, email update via E-Connections, and calendar postings on the Chamber website. There is no charge for this MEMBER ONLY service.

Throughout the year the Chamber hosts several networking opportunities. On the first Wednesday of each month is the Monthly Luncheon. The monthly luncheon is open to all members and guests and features recognition of new members during the last month, an interesting and infor-mative speaker, networking between attendees and there are always door prizes. The Chamber also partners with the East Montgomery County Observer newspaper on the second Wednesday of each month for Observer Networking Luncheon. This luncheon is all about networking between attendees and does not include a speaker. The monthly Networking Breakfast is held on the last Friday of each month at 8 am and is hosted by Kingwood Medical Center. The breakfast is free to all attendees. The fourth opportunity is with the Chamber’s quarterly After Hours Networking events. Held at varying member’s locations these after hours events are great opportunities to meet fellow members and business leaders in our area.

The Chamber’s website www.communitychamberemc.com provides easy access to people from all over the world. One of the site’s primary features is the membership roster for all members. Visitors to the site can easily find information either by name or by category listing. Advertising opportunities, including “banner ads” for members only are also available on the site. The Chamber’s monthly newsletter Chamber Connections is now a monthly electronic communication to all members. This monthly publication provides information pertinent to the Chamber as well as a calendar of events for the coming month. The Chamber also distributes a weekly electronic update called E-Connections which provides up to date infor-mation on the latest happenings in the Chamber and the community. In partnership with The Observer newspaper a monthly feature called Community Connections is now being sent to all the citizens where the East Montgomery County Observer is distributed. This outlet pro-vides the Chamber an opportunity to get its information to the general public in the area. The Observer gives Chamber members a special “members only” rate for their ads on this page.

Leadership East Montgomery County is an educational program for local business owners/managers and area citizens. The program provides detailed information on what is happen-ing in the area and why it happens. Leadership EMC is a three hour program one night per month for eight months. The Chamber also participates in Leadership Montgomery County and Leadership North Houston. Both of these programs are full-day programs and cover similar topics as Leadership EMC.

The Chamber participates in several organizations designed to assist the staff and board in making good decisions for its members. These organizations include the Montgomery County Council of Chambers which includes all six Chambers in the county, the Gulf Coast Chamber Executives (which includes some sixty Chambers from across southeast Texas) and finally the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives (which includes Chambers from across the entire state). Each of these groups meet to share ideas, work on common issues and to help each participating organization achieve its goals.
