On The Cover
A Rising StarIt has been quite a year for Randi Woodbeck, a UNBC student from Houston who is majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Rather than enjoying some downtime at home over the summer, Randi is working hard in a lab at UNBC after being awarded the BC Cancer Agency's top studentship, which recognizes students doing cancer research. It's the first time this award has ever gone to a student from northern BC. Earlier in the year, Randi won a top award in a national student research competition appropriately called the Rising Stars of Research. Her submission outlined her work searching for the enzymes capable of destroying the genes that cause cancer. The news release about this award was one of the most popular of the year for UNBC and Randi's face was soon seen on the cover of a UNBC brochure and in a national university advertising campaign. Randi humbly credits UNBC for her success: "The smaller class sizes at UNBC provide me with a friendly, hands-on learning environment," she says. "UNBC offers more opportunities for discovery at the undergrad level than any other university."
Medical Grad Jessica Maciejko of Houston is the most recent local graduate from the Northern Medical Program. Jessica is now pursuing a residency in family practice.
Born and raised in Telkwa, Kelley Hilton is the youngest of five siblings and the first to get a university degree. She was also one of this year’s valedictorians at Convocation, after graduating
with a Commerce degree majoring in International Business. She has dreams of beginning her own not-for-profit and joining the United Nations to continue being an influential and positive role model.
Bioenergy UnderwayChristy Clark was only days into her job as BC Premier when she travelled to UNBC to participate in the official opening of the University’s Bioenergy Plant. The facility uses technology to turn waste wood from Lakeland Mills of Prince George into a gas that is burned to heat the campus. Early tests have demonstrated that the system can produce fewer emissions than burning natural gas. The new plant – which is expected to reduce UNBC’s fossil fuel consumption by 85% – joins a wood pellet system on campus that started operations in 2009.
