PRESIDENT'S Message

Dear Alumni/ae, Colleagues and Friends:

I am pleased to share with you our 2010–11 Annual Report. While preparing this report, I was reminded of the words of Parker Palmer, the founder of the Center for Courage & Renewal, and a highly respected author and lecturer. In his book, The Courage to Teach, he wrote, “We need a coat with two pockets. In one pocket there is dust, and in the other pocket there is gold. We need a coat with two pockets to remind us who we are.”

In these interesting economic times, it is beneficial for all of us to reflect on both our successes and our challenges to keep us grounded and moving forward. For AMC, the 2010–11 Annual Report is an opportunity to share with our friends and colleagues the good year we have had as an institution while recognizing the challenges that lie ahead.

Anna Maria College continues to grow and expand in order to educate more women and men who seek a transformational experience in their lives and find it at AMC. We remain ever faithful to our core mission as a Catholic and Sisters of St. Anne College, rooted in its commitment to provide the highest quality education in an environment steeped in values and dedicated to service to the Common Good.

We remember our beginnings and look to the future as we celebrate dedicated alumni/ae, who represent the glorious past of AMC, and today’s students who will lead us into an even greater future. We recognize friends and benefactors, who continue to support us generously even in these difficult times, knowing that their gifts will help to educate the current and next generation of AMC students destined to make a difference in the world.

And while we acknowledge this wonderful “gold in our pocket,” we are mindful of the challenges the new year will bring and plan to approach these with increased dedication and focus to ensure a solid future for our students and families.

Saint Francis de Sales wrote, “Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them—every day begin the task anew.”

Thank you for all you have done to help AMC achieve greatness in 2010–11. As we celebrate our 65th anniversary in 2011–12, thank you for helping us as we “begin the task anew” in the hope and prayer that our students will receive the education they deserve and go on to live the lives we expect!

Sincerely,

Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D.President

St. Anne Hall Opens on Campus

The 63,000 square-foot Hall is comprised of three floors with two residential wings per floor. Common areas that are located in the central core include lounges, laundry rooms, study rooms, a kitchen, a resident director’s office, a resident assistant’s office, a workroom, lobbies, a central staircase and an elevator. St. Anne Hall also contains 35 student suites with 63 double bedrooms and 69 single bedrooms, as well as accommodations for resident life staff, for a total of 202 residents.

The addition of St. Anne Hall brings the total number of residence halls on the AMC campus to five. It was built in keeping with the College’s commitment to sustainability. St. Anne Hall meets LEED standards and incorporates numerous environmentally friendly components (see the chart below for a complete list). The new residence hall was also built as part of the College’s Vision 2015: Excellence at Anna Maria College.

St. Anne Hall officially opened on August 24, 2011, welcoming 200 AMC students through its doors. Construction began on this new suite-style, modern residence hall in the summer of 2010 and despite the snowy winter, the team was able to keep the job on time and on budget.

Anna Maria College received a $75,000 grant from the Fletcher Foundation, Worcester, MA, for campus technology infrastructure improvements. The grant will assist in providing universal access to technology on campus to meet the growing needs of all students. The funds will be used to upgrade and expand existing campus computer labs in the College’s Mondor-Eagan Library, its science building and the commuter lounge, as well as assist in adding a new computer lab on campus. In an effort to improve student learning outcomes, the grant will also allow the College to expand the computer lab in its Learning Center.

Local Foundations Show Support of AMC’s Vision

The Stoddard Foundation, Worcester, MA, granted Anna Maria College $400,000 to begin major capital improvements to the College’s Mondor-Eagen Library and the transformation of Esther House Residence Hall into a learning center.

The George I. Alden Trust, Worcester, MA, approved a $200,000 grant for Anna Maria College to support these same capital improvements on the AMC campus.

Funds from both grants will assist Anna Maria College in transforming the somewhat dated Mondor-Eagen Library into a modern learning community providing increased student academic support services, and additional classroom capacity. Some of the work that is planned for the Library includes:

• Making significant aesthetic improvements, including new doors and glass at the entrance, new carpet, paint, and lighting throughout

• Increasing usable space through layout improvements

• Purchasing new furniture to provide a comfort-able place for students to read and study, both

individually and in groups, and the addition of electrical outlets to accommodate more laptop computers

The Stoddard Foundation and Alden Trust Grants will also assist the College in changing the small residence hall that is currently Esther House into a vital, exciting space to house its current Learning Center and a new Advising Center, bringing together a suite of services and offices that are central to academic success: the Student Academic Success Center. When completed, the Center will provide one-stop access to the Learning Center, the new Advising Center, Health and Counseling Services, and the Multicultural Student Support and Study Abroad offices.

The Learning Center currently provides a compre-hensive range of services, including writing assistance, tutoring, academic coaching, study groups, and study skills development. The Center averages more than 750 student usages per week, and during the 2010/2011 academic year, 82% of the AMC student body utilized the Center at least once.

Helping COLLEGE DREAMS come true

During the 2010/2011 academic year, Anna Maria College was awarded a $75,000, three-year grant from the Esther’s Dream Foundation of Lachine, Quebec, to support an expanded bridge program for all incoming freshmen, with a particular emphasis on first generation students. Summer bridge programs are used by a number of colleges and universities to help smooth the transition between high school and college. Anna Maria

began offering its first summer bridge program during the summer of 2010 with the launch of a two-week pilot program specifically for minority at risk students, who self-identified as needing a bridge between high school and college. This program, called AMCAT Summer, is funded through a grant from the Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation.

Through the generosity of Esther’s Dream Foundation, AMC was able to offer a second bridge program that

was free of charge to all incoming freshmen. Eleven students attended the one-week intensive program held July 25 to 29, 2011 and were provided with a college writing seminar and sessions on college success and life skills. The program also offered first generation parents, who never attended college, the opportunity to spend two days at Anna Maria with their students to understand what they will be experiencing when they attend college in the fall.

Esther’s Dream is a private foundation of the Sisters of Saint Anne, who founded Anna Maria College in 1946. The Foundation was instituted to encourage “the creative audacity of the Sisters of Saint Anne in the establishment or the pursuit of works committed to the integral education of the most needy, to the growth of all life, and to the creation of a more just and caring world” (Mission of Esther’s Dream). The Foundation supports works of the Sisters of Saint Anne and those works in which Sisters of Saint Anne are involved.

John Ernest, (far left) a criminal justice major, really enjoyed

the time he spent at AMC during the First Year Experience

(FYE) program. “It was a great way to get to know what it is like

to live on campus and attend classes. It helped me to under-

stand what college life is all about and how to prepare myself

to be successful.”

Catherine DeQuinzo, (seated) an art therapy major, felt

similar to John about the FYE program except for one thing.

“I thought I would have to participate in course work and

have homework,” she explains. “Instead, the classes taught us

how to handle the academic rigors of college.” Catherine also

enjoyed meeting all of the orientation leaders. “Now they are

our friends instead of just upperclassmen,” she adds.

Kevin Card, (left) a criminal justice major, also enjoyed the

preparatory classes he attended and meeting the orientation

leaders. However, what impressed him the most was the

community service project. “I was really inspired by the

outreach program in the community. We worked with

homeless individuals at the Mustard Seed and the experience

helped me to see how fortunate I really am.”

Dennis Vanasse ‘94, Director of AMC’s

Learning Center, and program director for

FYE was pleased with the outcome of the

program’s first year. “We had 11 students

in attendance and it was wonderful for

me to watch them all grow in readiness

for college in just one week. They all left

the program with a real level of comfort

and confidence that espoused, 'I can be

successful. I can do this,' " he adds.

Roots of Strength

Anna Maria College has had a

powerful and lasting influence

on the lives of two successful

and happy alumni.

The extraordinary gardens that highlight the five plus riverfront acres that comprise the Upton, MA, home of the Hamms, Lloyd ’81, ’83G and Linda ’83, exemplify the strength and beauty of their 28-year marriage. Having met as students at Anna Maria College, Linda and Lloyd have successfully journeyed through life together always cognizant of the impact their families and AMC have had on their lives.

Linda comes alive when she walks the gardens, which she designs and maintains daily. She met Lloyd in 1978 at Anna Maria when he helped her father move in to the men’s residence hall for an overnight stay. Days later the two met again at a party and the rest is history. “We became a couple quickly,” states Linda, who left northeast Philadelphia to study music therapy at AMC.

Linda fondly remembers her time at Anna Maria, pointing to her experiences working on campus in the dining hall and in public relations with Sr. Paulette Gardner, as well as working for Dr. Louise Soldani. “These work-study positions truly helped me develop leadership skills,” shares Linda. “ I was somewhat shy, and AMC’s small campus and opportunities for students to get involved definitely impacted my ability to succeed in life,” she adds. After graduation, Linda joined the human service agency, Alternatives of Whitinsville, where she worked in a variety of management positions for

Page 11: 2011 Annual Report

13 years. While raising their two daughters, Brittiny, who will graduate in 2012 with a degree in Accountancy from Providence College, and Courtney, a freshman Zoology major at Colorado State University, Linda became enamored with gardening and hopes one day to become a Master Gardener.

A native of Upton, Lloyd selected Anna Maria College to study biology. Having started working at age 11 to help support his family, he continued to work throughout his four years at AMC, on campus in work-study positions and off-campus at a variety of jobs, as well as picking corn at local farms. Similar to Linda, Lloyd points to his work and volunteer experiences as life changing, helping him to build the strong foundations that have led to his professional and personal successes. “I had the opportunity to work in Admissions with Paul Lynskey, in Financial Aid with Duane Quinn and as a student assistant to then President Sr. Bernadette Madore, among other oppor-tunities,” explains Lloyd. “These positions helped me secure the confidence I needed to become a student-leader on campus.” Lloyd became a resident assistant and served on the SGA as the resident student representative and later as its Vice President/Treasurer. He was also asked to be the student representative on the College’s strategic planning committee, which helped set the stage for Lloyd’s future career.

After graduation, Lloyd was one of over 500 area students applying for one of two Management Trainees at the former Mechanics Bank. Although he had studied biology and was competing against business majors, Lloyd was selected to join the Mechanics Bank team. “I attribute my ability to obtain this position to the leadership and critical thinking skills I learned at AMC,” he comments. “The bank valued my strong work ethic and student-volunteer experiences and the fact that they recognized these attributes has remained with me ever since,” he adds. Lloyd moved up quickly in the banking industry and now serves as Chief Administrative Officer for Eastern Bank Corporation, a $7.8 billion dollar bank based in Boston, MA, where he has worked for over 25 years.

Anna Maria also embedded in Lloyd and Linda a desire to continue to explore and learn in new ways. After graduation, they developed a common love for travel. Along with their daughters, the family has traveled to nearly all of the United States and Canadian Provinces, virtually all of Europe, and parts of Asia. Most recently they returned from a safari in Kenya & Tanzania, East Africa. Together they treat these experiences as wonderful learning opportunities, and a continuation of the education that began decades ago at Anna Maria. Lloyd recounts that they accomplished one of his life goals by visiting the five renowned museums in Europe in a single year. He states, “In history classes at AMC, we studied these special places...and it came full circle when I had

the opportunity to visit each. Further evidence that AMC had planted the seed that grew into lifelong learning for many of us.”

As f irst-generation college s tudent s , both Linda and Lloyd have never forgotten how AMC and faculty mentors like Professor Joe Wilson helped them get the most out of their college education. “Receiving persona l at tent ion, adv ice and leadership opportunities can have a profound impact on all college students and in

particular first-generation students,” states Lloyd. “As an alumnus and College Trustee, AMC’s service to first-generation students is one aspect that I have continually supported.” Lloyd lives this value in his personal life as well, having assisted the families of his daughters’ friends, and by seeking out first-generation students to start careers as bank trainees and staff. In fact, an AMC Alumnus and Valedictorian was recruited and is now an Assistant Vice President in Lloyd’s organization. “Similar to how Linda and I were raised, first-generation students don’t take things for granted,” shares Lloyd. “They appreciate their education and how it can help to shape their lives.”

The expansiveness of the gardens at the home of Linda and Lloyd demonstrate the infusive way they both bring their own special gifts to family, friends and colleagues. Not resting on their achievements, both continue to work hard and remain committed to the core values they learned at Anna Maria College.

Look WHAT'S NEW at Anna Maria College

Anna Maria College continues to grow exponentially to meet the needs of its students, both now and in the future. In addition to adding new buildings and technologies, the College has recruited many new faculty, staff and administrators to help AMC achieve its goals. In addition, current faculty, staff and administrators continue to pursue excellence in their chosen professions. Please enjoy reading about some of these new additions and accomplishments.

NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Baccalaureate in NursingAnna Maria College launched a new Baccalaureate in Nursing program for fall enrollment in 2011. AMC has been offering nursing programs for over 25 years beginning with its RN to BSN program for licensed RNs who want to fulfill the degree requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The RN to BSN is now being offered in an online format. The new BSN replaces the College’s ASN program, which began in 2006. All nursing programs at AMC have been fully accredited by both the NLNAC and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Paramedic ScienceAnna Maria College has just launched a new academic program that will lead to a Bachelor of Science in Paramedic Science. AMC is one of only a few colleges to offer a bachelor degree program that prepares students for the challenges paramedics face in the field now and in the future. Research shows that the demand for paramedics is growing and the education of paramedics is becoming more demanding and professional. The degree program prepares students for professional certification and a career in the allied health arena or in the management of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

SHRM Learning System CourseAnna Maria College, in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), launched the SHRM Learning System Course in an online format on September 20, 2010. The SHRM Learning System has helped more than 30,000 HR professionals earn their PHR® (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR® (Senior Professional in Human Resources) certification. The AMC course is one of the few SRHM courses offered in an online format. It is designed to assist professionals in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to respond to today’s job challenges.
