• Linda Spoelman, Professor/English,ledaninitiativetodesigna“CareerbyDesign”curriculumforAllegan Michigan Works!overaperiodoffivemonthsfromJunetoOctober2011.Alongwithtwoadjuncts,shedevelopedafour-weekcurriculumforchronicallyunderemployedclientsofAlleganMichiganWorks!todeveloptheirself-managementskillssothattheywouldbemorelikelytopersistinemployment.Thisprocessbeganbylookingatwhatthisagencywasalreadydoing,determininggaps,andbuildingcurriculumthataddressedthegapswhilestillintegratingsmoothlyintotheirexistingprocesses.

• Duringthe2011-2012academicschoolyearTurning Point AcademywasdevelopedasapartnershipbetweenGRCCandGrand Rapids Public Schools(GRPS)underthedirectionofDavidSelmon,DirectorofAdultEducation,andKurtJohnson,ExecutiveDirectorofGrandRapidsPublicSchoolsAlternativeEducation.TheGrandRapidsPublicSchoolsawardedthecollegewitha$90,000awardtoassistthemwiththerecruitingandtransitioningoftargetedstudentsfromtheGrandRapidsarea.TurningPointAcademyserved147studentswithalternativewaystobere-engaged:alternativehighschoolcompletioncourses,dualenrollmentintothecollege,extra-curricularactivitiesdesignedtofamiliarizethestudentswiththecollegeenvironmentandresponsibilities,andplacementintosecondaryinstitutions.

• GRCCwasawardeda$220,000WorkforceInvestmentAct Granttoserveover350students.Weserved150GEDstudentsand170ESLstudentswiththeunderstandingthatthesestudents,uponcompletion,wouldtransitiontoeitherthecommunitycollegeoratrainingprogram.Studentsalsoreceivedcareercoachserviceswheretheylearnedhowtodoonlineapplications,resumesandcoverletters,anddevelopportfolios.

• FinancialLiteracywasofferedbyHuntington BankunderthedirectionofReneeWilliams,CommunityVicePresidentofHuntingtonBank(WealthyLearningCorner)andLake Michigan Credit Union,underthedirectionofVickiSmith,VicePresidentofLakeMichiganCreditUnion(WestsideLearningCorner).Theclassesprovidedthefollowingservices:creditevaluations,financialbestpractices,moneymanagement,etc.Thecoursesservedover350studentsandinreturnforthestudentscompletingthecourse,theyreceivedfreeGEDtestingfees.

• GRCCformedapartnershipwiththeWord ProjectunderthedirectionoftheDominicanSisterstooffercitizenshipclasses.ThecourseswereheldattheWestsideLearningCornerwhereitservedover30studentsseekingcitizenship.

› BasedonsurveyfeedbackfromtheattendeesatAdjunctRecruitmentFairsheldin2010-11,severalimprovementsweremadeintheeventfor2011-12.Tominimizethewaittimeforadjunctsattherecruitmentfair,aminimumoffourfull-timefacultyfromeachdepartmentwereaskedtoscreenandmeetwiththeparticipantsduringthebreakoutsession.Theinvolvementoffaculty,inadditiontothedepartmentheads/programdirectors,providesformoreinterestinthedepartmentforhiringqualityadjuncts.Tofacilitatethisrecruitment,aHumanResourcesrepresentativevisitedourdepartmenthead/programdirectorleadershipmeetingstodiscusstheimportanceofmorefacultybeinginvolvedatthefair.Avideoalsowascreatedtotrainfacultyonhowtosuccessfully

› TodeepenAcademicFoundationProgramandGEDfacultyunderstandingofReadingApprenticeshipandtobuildtheirskillinusingit,athree-daytrainingwasofferedattheendofSeptemberfor35inviteddevelopmentalandGEDfaculty.ThistraininggavefacultypracticeinusingandteachingotherstouseAchievingtheDreamstrategies.Asaresult,attendingfacultycoulduseReadingApprenticeshiptechniqueswithmoreskillintheirclassrooms,andthetrainingservedasthequalifyingtrainingrequiredforLindaSpoelmanandJanChapmantogetadvancedtrainingfromWestEdinJune.Afollow-upmorningoftrainingwasheldinNovember2011thatfocusedonquestioningtechniquessothatattendingfacultycouldusequestioningtobetteradvantageintheclassroom.ThiseffortwasledbyLinda Spoelman,Professor/Englishand Vikki Cooper,AssociateProfessor/English,bothEnglishfaculty,withsupportfromWestEd,thetrainingorganizationforReadingApprenticeship.

› Sophia Brewer,Adjunct/Library&LearningCommons,wasProjectLeadfortheLLCMicroficheWeedingproject.Itrequired18monthstocompleteandresultedinmorethan74,000microfichebeingwithdrawnfromthecollection.Thisprojectrepresentsareductionofmorethan60%intheLLC’smicroficheholdings.

› Alldeaccessioneditemsandtitlespanswereinventoried,searched,andverifiedasavailableinacurrentGRCConlinedatabasesubscription.Onlineaccesstoinformationwasthebasisofthisinitiativebecauseitisessentialforstudentresearchinourenvironment.WeedingthiscollectionremovedunnecessarilyredundantmaterialandshouldprovideacostsavingsfortheCollege.

› TheRaiderCardsystemwasexpandedtoprovideaccessforstudentswhousetheoff-campusparkingprogram,DASH.Over450studentsusethissystemonaregularbasis.Thisintegrationofourcardsystemwithacityparkingprogramhasgreatlystreamlinedthemanagementofthisprocess,andimprovedthecustomerservicelevel.ThiseffortwasledbyEric Mullen,Director/StudentLife,andPaulo Teles,AssociateDirector/StudentLife.

Process Improvements•Early Alert Flags in PeopleSoft Software Improvement

› Whenfacultyfeltthatstudentswereinjeopardyofbeingsuccessful,aflagwasraisedintheEarlyAlertsystem.Forcounselor/advisors,thatmeantonaregularbasiswehadtobeloggedintoAdvisorTrac,EarlyAlertandPeopleSoft.Ascounselors/advisors,mostofwhatweneedtodoisinAdvisorTrac&PeopleSoft,sooftenwewouldnothavetimetogointoEarlyAlerttoseeifourwalk-instudenthadaflagraised.WeworkedcollaborativelywithITtodevelopaprocessthatcanberunweeklythatwillloadanynewlyraisedflagsintheEarlyAlertsystemasa“negativeindicator”sothatwhenadvisorsareinthePeopleSoftsystem,theycanseeifaflaghasbeenraised(asthisisascreenweroutinelygotoforeachstudent)andthenhavetheappropriateconversationswiththem.Thiswillsavecounselor/advisorstimeandallowthemtobeawareofthiscriticalinformationandbetterabletointervene.ThiswasacollaborativeeffortwithCounseling and Career CenterandInformation Technology.

•Counselor/Advisor Drop-In Appointments Expanded

› Afterreceivingfeedbackfromstudentsthattheywantedtheopportunitytomeetwithcounselorsonadrop-inbasesmorethanjustafewspecificdaysorweeksayearandatvarioustimes,anewprocesswasimplemented.Typically60+studentscouldcheckinduringdrop-indaysandsitandwaithours(sometimesasmuchas4hours)tobeseenbyacounselor.Theprogrambeganwithofferingdrop-invisitavailabilityMonday-Friday.Eachcounselorwouldcoverthreehalfdaysasthedrop-incounselor.Studentscouldpicktocheckinduringthemorningorafternoonbasedontheirconvenience.Studentswouldcheckinatthefrontdesk,filloutthedrop-inform,andiftheymetthecriteria,theywouldbecheckedintoseethenextavailablecounselor.Ifstudentswantedtobeseenasadrop-inforotherthandrop-invisitreasons,theyweregivenanappointmenttime.Drop-invisitswerespecificallyforshort,quickinteractions/questions.ExpansionwasledbyCounseling and Career Center.
