COLOUR AWARDS YEARBOOK 2011-12

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL & VICE-CHANCELLOR

Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches and team support staff on a successful 2011-12 athletic season. There have been many highlights this year as we celebrate the outstanding performances of our Gaels teams. Back to back women's soccer National Championships and women's ultimate national champions. Provincial championships in cycling, men's fencing, women's soccer, men's volleyball and the first ever in women's volleyball.

We can also celebrate the first indoor national championship ever hosted by our school which was a great success on all fronts. Record breaking crowds enjoyed some of the best volleyball the nation has to offer. The Gaels won their first every quarter-final match and ended the tournament with their best showing ever in fourth place.

I would like to recognize the student-athletes who have earned academic All-Star status this past year. I also commend our Gaels for their work in the community contributing to local charities through projects that grow community, health & wellness and sport.

I would like to extend my appreciation to our dedicated coaches, support staff, alumni and team supporters who combine to create a positive environment that supports our student-athletes in pursuing excellence in athletics and academia.

To our graduating student-athletes who will be departing for other endeavours after this year, I wish you the best of luck. Your Queen's experience will certainly serve you well as you depart for the next chapter in your lives. As our newest alumni, I implore you to remain engaged with your respective programs and support future generations as they continue the athletic legacy you have helped to forge.

I thank you all for being an important part of the Queen's community and for continuing the rich and vibrant tradition of athletics at our University. I look forward to following and celebrating your future success.

Cha Gheill!!!

2012 CIS MEN'S VOLLE YBALL CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTS

Queen's Athletics and Recreation hosted their first ever indoor national championship March 2-4 as they welcomed the top CIS players to Kingston. The event was a huge success, with attendance records being set Friday and broken the following night. Queen's finished fourth which is their best result at nationals.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING The women's volleyball team re-wrote their record books this season. After winning their first ever OUA championship, they made their first appearance on the national stage. Natalie Gray became the first player to take home a major award at the national level winning the CIS Thérèse Quigley award.

ALL-TIME GAELBrittany Moore, a year after becoming the Queen's Gaels all-time leading scorer, moves into second on the OUA all-time scoring list and finishes her career as the Gaels basketball – men's and women's – all-time leading scorer. She finishes her career with 1,652 points.

GOLD RUSHBoth the men's and women's volleyball teams took home provincial championships on the same weekend. In both final games the two squads defeated the OUA Final Four host teams to win their championships.

BACK-TO-BACK! The women's soccer team won OUA and CIS championships with both games being decided by penalty kicks. They are the first women's team in school history to win back-to-back national championships.

MOST VALUABLE GAELSThe Gaels were well represented at the OUA level this year with Joren Zeeman (Men's Volleyball), Natalie Gray (Women's Volleyball), Morgan McHaffie (Women's Hockey) and Riley Filion (Women's Soccer) all their leagues MVP's. Riley Whitlock (Men's Hockey) and Osie Ukwuoma (Football) took home honours for their positions as well.

BANNER SEASONS It was a banner season once again for the Gaels winning national titles in women's soccer and women's ultimate. The cycling and men's fencing teams both repeated as provincial champions while men's volleyball, women's volleyball and women's soccer all brought home OUA championship banners.

COACHING MILESTONESThree well decorated coaches hit milestone marks in their Gaels coaching careers this year as Women's Basketball coach Dave Wilson and Rowing coach John Armitage finished up their 30th seasons while Men's Volleyball coach Brenda Willis celebrated her 25th year at the helm.

STREAKING INTO THE PLAYOFFSAfter an 0-2 start to the season, the football team went on a win streak heading into the playoffs taking their next six straight games along with their opening round playoff match against Laurier. The men's volleyball team caught fire at the end of their season winning their final six regular season games and all three playoff games winning the OUA championship. The women's volleyball team followed a similar path taking their final five regular season games and all three OUA playoff matches for their first OUA championship title.

ROCK THE K-ROCKThe Carr-Harris Cup 2012 edition was set on the largest stage in the game's 26 year history in front of a record 2,576 crowd at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont. Queen's won the game 4-1.

SEASON REC APThe 2011-12 season marked the beginning of a new era for the Gaels basketball program as it goes down as the first under head coach Stephan Barrie.

A very young squad had difficulty for much of the season but improved consistently as the season went along and held tough in very closely contested games. The Gaels played their way back into playoff contention with a solid weekend against the Royal Military College, defeating the Paladins twice by margins of 41 and 31 points respectively. However, two nailbiting losses to York caught up with the team as they finished just behind the Lions for the final playoff spot.

Mackenzie Simpson who transferred into the program this year averaged a team high 12.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

The Gaels will lose their most tenured player as Bernard Burgesson wraps up his Queen's career as the active leader in points and rebounds with 387 points and 321 rebounds. Burgesson was also named the Marco William Alessio scholarship recipient.

SEASON REC APReturning the core of a young squad in 2010-11, the Gaels looked to build on the successes of a roster that was comprised of primarily first and second year players.

The team started off the year hot, going 4-1 through five games. Tough weekends caught up with them over the course of the season though as their record hovered around the .500 mark for the remainder of the season. Despite the ups and downs the Gaels used big performances at home to earn home court advantage in the playoffs. In the playoffs, a difficult third quarter prevented the Gaels from moving on to the OUA Final Four as they fell to Ryerson by a 71-66 score.

First year player Jenny Wright was named to the OUA all-rookie team for her efforts during the year. She racked up 151 points and 106 rebounds while averaging over 20 minutes a game.

The Gaels were led all season by fifth year standout Brittany Moore, who was an OUA East first team All-Star for the fourth time. She graduates from the program as the number two all-time scorer in OUA history with 1,652 points and the top scorer in the history of Queen’s basketball.

SEASON REC APAfter a disappointing 3-5 finish in 2010, the Queen's Gaels entered the 2011 season boasting a young, talented core of players looking to establish themselves as a top OUA squad.

The month of September got off to a rough start for the Gaels and as a result the team came out on the wrong end of 26-2 and 19-6 scorelines to McMaster and Ottawa respectively. The Gaels returned home and got the ball rolling on a six game regular season winning streak which carried into the playoffs.

Queen's rattled off three straight road victories over York, Toronto and Windsor, outscoring their opposition by a 103-23 margin. The Gaels continued to roll when they returned home with a 53-0 win over Waterloo and a 37-0 win over No. 1 nationally ranked Western. The Gaels earned a 6-2 record which was good for third place in the OUA and a home playoff game.

In their first playoff match the Gaels defeated Laurier for a second time, 14-10 at Richardson Stadium, bringing their win streak to seven games. One week later the Gaels saw their season come to a close as they fell by a 40-13 margin against the eventual national champion, McMaster Marauders.

It was a record setting year for several Gaels. Dan Village became the Gaels all-time leading field goal kicker. Ryan Granberg became the second running back in Gaels history to rush for over 1,000 yards. The Gaels also had their first defence in team history to go the length of the season without allowing a rushing touchdown.

It was also a banner year for Gaels taking home personal accolades as they had 13 players named OUA All-Stars including Granberg, Mike Sullivan, John Miniaci, Osie Ukwuoma, Sam Sabourin, Andrew Lue, and Frank Pankewich who were each named to the OUA first team. Granberg, Sabourin, and Lue also earned recognition as CIS All-Canadians.

Ukwuoma won the OUA's J.P. Metras lineman of the year award for the second time in his career.

SEASON REC APThe 2011-12 season saw many new faces in big roles for the Gaels as several young additions were put in place around a veteran core.

The Gaels started the season on the right foot, winning five of their first seven games before a November slump put them in a dogfight for the playoffs. A 6-3 record after the Christmas break put them back on track and a 4-1 win over the RMC Paladins in the Carr-Harris Cup in front of 2,576 fans at the K-Rock Centre gave them the points they needed to advance to the playoffs. In the first round they ran into the top ranked McGill Redmen, eventually going down in two games.

The Gaels were led by their All-Canadian goaltender Riley Whitlock who only allowed 70 goals against and took home OUA East Top Goaltender honours. Corey Bureau was named OUA East rookie of the year after scoring a team high 11 goals and earning a spot on the OUA East All-Rookie team.

Jonathon Lawrance caps his five year career and fourth season as team captain with his second consecutive Randy Gregg Award for combining hockey, academics and community involvement. The Gaels' captain had 15 points, scoring seven goals and adding eight assists in 28 games.

SEASON REC APDespite a heavy turnover in the roster from the 2011 OUA champion and CIS bronze medalist team, the Gaels maintained a national ranking in 13 of 14 weeks during the season and were bolstered by several impressive individual performances as they made a return to the playoffs in 2011-12.

The team picked up their regular season where they left off in the previous playoffs as they began their year with a 10-5 record in the first half of the season, including a lopsided 10-2 victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa in just the third game of the season. The Gaels stumbled after the new year, and were forced to win their last three games of the season to clinch home ice in the playoffs.

The Gaels couldn’t regain their early season form come playoff time. In the first round they drew the York Lions, falling in three games to end their year.

It was a banner year for the Gaels in the awards column as Morgan McHaffie became the first Gael since 2003-04 to win the OUA Player of the Year award after leading the OUA scoring race from the start of the year. McHaffie was also an OUA first team All-Star. She was joined as an All-Star by Katie Duncan who was an OUA second team All-Star, as well as Taryn Pilon who was a member of the OUA all-rookie team.

SEASON REC APThe Queen's Gaels entered the 2011 season after a bronze medal finish in 2010. The Gaels looked to return to the OUA Championship one year removed from capturing their last title.

Bolstered by the return of OUA All-Stars Andrew Kirk, Liam Underwood, Dan Moor and Mike Wong, the Gaels had the talent in place to be one of the top teams in the OUA once again. Queen's put together a 7-1 regular season record, boasting league bests in points scored and points conceded. The Gaels displayed an expansive and creative attacking style complemented with a suffocating defence that specialized in forcing turnovers. The Gaels' defensive effort was one of the best the OUA has seen in two decades.

The Gaels earned a quarter-final bye and home semifinal game where they took on the McMaster Marauders. The Gaels put in their second dominant performance of the year against the Marauders, winning 32-10 to earn their berth in the OUA Championship. In a well played and entertaining final, Western hung on late to defeat the Gaels 21-15.

SEASON REC APThe 2011 Gaels were one of the best in the country after finishing in the CIS top ten every week of the season. The Gaels regular season ended with an impressive 4-1 record, which placed them second in the OUA Russell division.

In the OUA quarter-final the Gaels drew the Trent Excalibur in a match that required overtime to determine a winner. After Trent took a 10-7 lead Kayla Roote scored a try with one minute remaining in overtime for the victory. The Gaels then advanced to the OUA semifinal where they were defeated by the eventual CIS Champions - Guelph Gryphons. Despite the loss the Gaels battled on with the Brock Badgers in the OUA bronze medal game where the team came out victorious with a 17-13 decision.

The Gaels were honoured with four OUA All-Star selections. Scrumhalf and co-captain Susan Heald, centre Andrea Wadsworth, flanker/prop Taylor White and prop Claragh Pegg were all named to the team. Rachelle Kranenburg earned the community service award for her contributions off the field.

Four Gaels were named to the OUA All-Star team, including Joe Zupo who was named a first team All-Star. David Tom, Jordan Brooks and Christidis took spots on the second-team. It was the second time being honoured for both Zupo and Brooks while Christidis was honoured in his rookie season.

SEASON REC APThe focus of Athletic Therapy is to look after the well-being of the varsity student-athletes, both during events and in the clinic.

Our professional staff includes four Certified Athletic Therapists: Vicky Wiltshire (Coordinator, Athletic Therapy), James Sawchuk (ARC clinic/Memorial Centre), Dawn Robertson (ARC clinic) and Dave Ross (Stadium). Dr. Davide Bardana continues to provide orthopaedic consultations to those athletes in need. Additions to our growing team include Dawn Robertson (Certified Athletic Therapist and Registered Massage Therapist), Tonya Holden (administrative assistance), Dr. Michael O’Connor (sports medicine physician), and Dr. John Drover (physician, men’s hockey).

Athletic Therapy had 48 student trainers in 2011-12, most deriving from the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. The student trainers continue to be the heart of our program and have once again done an outstanding job helping to keep the varsity athletes healthy. Queen's says goodbye to 15 of our student staff this year. A huge thank you for your years of dedication and service.

2011-12 COLOUR AWARDS YEARBOOK

THE GRADUATING ‘Q’ AWARDSuccessful, Strong, Bold, Proud, Inspiring, Perseverant… these are the attributes of Queen’s student-athletes. The Graduating “Q” Award embodies these qualities and signifies the development a student-athlete experiences while at Queen’s.

This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating student-athletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours.

The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete. The commitment, perseverance, joy, pain, and ultimately the successes you have achieved are all represented by this award. Presented to graduating athletes who have contributed to Queen’s for a minimum of three seasons, this award is a reminder that recipients are ‘Forever a Gael.’

Athletes receiving this award are denoted throughout this book with a “Q” beside their name.

That’s why we’re dedicated to helping WWF conserve and protect freshwater resources in Canada. And, we’re trying hard not to waste a drop in the production of our beverages. Since 2005, we’ve improved our water use ratio by 24%. Now that’s refreshing news.
