OVERVIEW

Introduction How does the Athletic Department support the USC Aiken mission?

• Participation in athletics promotes active learning experiences for the student-athletes through practice and game experiences;

• Athletics challenges the student-athletes to acquire and develop the skills, knowledge, and values

necessary for success by teaching teamwork, honesty, dedication, and goal-setting; • Student-athletes are given the framework of how to build and maintain a healthy body through

exercise, stretching, weight lifting, and cardiovascular routines; • Practice and game opportunities provide the student-athletes with opportunities to maximize

individual and team achievement; • Practice and game opportunities challenge the student-athletes to think critically and creatively, to

communicate with others, and learn when challenged competitively;

• NCAA, Peach Belt Conference, and athletic department rules and regulations stress honesty, integrity, and responsible citizenship;

• Athletic department recruitment practices enhance the international and non-South Carolina student

base on campus. This provides opportunities for greater diversity and multicultural experiences; • Athletics has strong community ties which leads to increased publicity for the University through

the various media outlets; • Athletics by nature creates an “esprit de corps” with the community and provides a sense of pride

when programs are successful. An example of this would be the increased fan base seen in many of our programs including basketball and baseball;

• Staff members and student-athletes give back to the community by participating in community

service projects such as Adopt-A-Parkway programs, reading to the Boys and Girls Club members, speaking to various elementary and middle school groups, and speaking when requested at civic groups and other functions;

• Athletics also interacts with the community through promotions and fund raising initiatives.

Examples include the Pacer Club, Polo Tournament, golf tournaments, sports auctions, endowed scholarships, baseball rodeos and bull riding, etc.

Athletic Program Overview 2011-12 USCA Department of Athletics Mission Statement - The USC Aiken Department of Athletics is a member of the Student Life and Services Division. As an integral part of the total educational process and the development of students, athletics fosters pride in the University among the students, faculty/staff, alumni, and friends. It also builds support for the institution throughout the community, region, state, and nation. Athletics attempts to support the total University community by recruiting and retaining quality full-time student-athletes; by enhancing the visibility and positive image of the University through the various media sources; by creating an “esprit de corps” among our supporters; and by providing another fund raising entity. Department of Athletics Objectives and Long Range Goals • To recruit student-athletes who possess the ability to achieve academic success with the ultimate

objective to graduate each and every student-athlete. • To build and sustain quality and competitive programs in all sports offered. • To fundraise and help support all athletic programs at USCA. • To adhere to the letter and spirit of the rules and regulations set forth by the National Collegiate

Athletic Association (NCAA), the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) and USC Aiken. • To create an environment that encourages gender equity and diversity. • To assist in maintaining the physical, emotional, and social welfare of all USCA student-athletes. • To maintain a quality staff that support and uphold the principles of sportsmanship, ethical conduct,

and amateurism and at the same time are able to motivate the student-athletes in their charge. • To establish and enforce standards of conduct for all student-athletes and staff which create a

positive image for the Department, University, and State. • To provide entertainment and recreation for the public. SWOT Strengths • Athletic facilities for volleyball, basketball and baseball are great and good for softball • Athletics has an experienced and dedicated staff • Student-athlete GPA’s and graduation rates are high nearly every year • Our sports are competitive in most sports • Athletics raises a good amount of money each year • Staff, coaches and student-athletes work to support one another • Athletics generates an enormous amount of publicity for the University each year Weaknesses • No paid assistant coach in men or women’s soccer, volleyball, or men’s and women’s tennis • There is a lack of a practice field in soccer; golf has to depend on community facilities to practice

and play; and tennis only has seven courts and no dressing rooms or running water • Spending money from athletics for the upkeep of facilities and proper field care cuts into operating

costs • Operating and scholarship budgets for most sports are not competitive in the PBC • Most athletic salaries are at the low end in the PBC Opportunities • There are many opportunities for athletics to engage even more with the community • Summer camp programs have room to grow • Cultivating the media will produce more opportunities for university exposure • Increased enrollment will generate more student fees • Room to expand partnerships with Global Spectrum • Ability to give students unique learning experiences Threats • Continued conference expansion increases travel costs and missed class times by student-athletes • Economic climate of uncertainty makes discretionary dollars harder to spend which impacts fund

raising, promotions and game attendance • Transfer admission policies are difficult to understand • Limited number of majors and class offerings (and times) makes it difficult to get all team players

together for practice unless practices are scheduled early in the morning or late in the afternoon or evening

• Global Spectrum’s scheduling of the Convocation Center for outside events • Uncertainty of new administration!

Program Visibility

1. USC Aiken Sports Information (SID) continued to work to place the athletic department in the “best

light plausible.” 2. USC Aiken SID office worked effectively with The Aiken Standard, The Augusta Chronicle, The State

and the Associated Press along with the regional television stations and radio stations to continue to expand the exposure of Pacer athletics.

3. SID office continued utilizing “The Stretch” an e-mail publication that goes out to all those with a vested interest in Pacer athletics. “The Stretch” details all that is going on with USC Aiken athletics over the course of the week.

4. In addition to “The Stretch”, the SID office continued to utilize the “Pacer Fan Email” list where USC Aiken alumni, fans and others can follow the day-to-day efforts of USC Aiken athletics.

5. SID office updated and enhanced the quarterly Winner’s Circle newsletter which goes out to members of the USC Aiken Pacer Club.

6. Athletics coordinated and produced the Eighth Annual “Pacers and Polo” program, which is the third leg of the Aiken Triple Crown. The event raises money for athletic scholarships at USC Aiken.

7. SID office produced media guides for volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball, cross country, men’s and women’s tennis and golf. The media guides are done to try and boost publicity for each respective program.

8. SID office continued to utilize “Live Stats” for all home men’s and women’s basketball games as well as all home baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and softball contests.

9. SID office continued to provide live video web casts of home men’s and women’s basketball games as well as home baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and volleyball games. The office also coordinated all webcasts for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

10. SID office continued to implement a new emerging media plan for Pacer athletics, which features new angles to promote the Pacers through new media platforms such as Facebook, You Tube, ustream and Twitter.

11. SID office successfully continued the USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week Award, which is designed to go to the top Pacer performer from the preceding week every week of the athletic year.

12. SID office successfully started a USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month, which is designed to go to the top Pacer performer from the preceding month every month of the athletic year.

13. SID office continued use of highly successful You Tube show titled “Inside Pacer Athletics.” The show features a member of the USC Aiken SID office sitting down with coaches, student-athletes and administrators at USC Aiken. The show gives fans an inside look into the day-to-day operations of the USC Aiken athletic department.

14. SID office successfully sold advertisements for USC Aiken’s official athletic website, www.PacerSports.com.

Department of Intercollegiate Athletics 2011-12 Grade Report

During the 2011-12 academic year USC Aiken’s student-athletes earned an average GPA of 2.885. Also, 102 (50%) of our student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.00 or higher for the academic year. USC Aiken had six student-athletes, Kevin Gifford (Baseball), Cassey Lloyd (Women’s Cross Country), Samantha Lukralle (Volleyball), Drew McElveen (Golf), Thomas McLeod (Baseball), and Patrick Stiebinger (Men’s Tennis), earn a perfect 4.000 GPA for the 2011-12 academic year. For the year, six teams earned an average GPA of over 3.000. The spring 2012 semester student-athlete average GPA of 2.863, while 98 (50%) of our student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.00 or higher for the spring 2012 semester. For the semester, five of our eleven varsity teams earned an average GPA of over 3.000 USC Aiken had 11 student-athletes, Brandy Bossle (Softball), Victoria Burkett (Softball), Nicole DeVries (Volleyball), Samantha DeVries (Volleyball), Kevin Gifford (Baseball), Cassey Lloyd (Women’s Cross Country), Samantha Lukralle (Volleyball), Julie Maline (Women’s Tennis), Drew McElveen (Golf), Thomas McLeod (Baseball), and Patrick Stiebinger (Men’s Tennis), earn a 4.000 GPA for the spring 2012 semester. During USC Aiken’s May 2012 commencement exercises 27 current or former student-athletes were degree candidates and a total of 47 current or former student-athletes were degree candidates during the 2011-12 academic year.

The Year In Sports

Men’s Soccer The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer team concluded its 2011 season with a record of 3-10-4 under 16th-year head mentor Ike Ofoje. The Pacers owned a record of 1-5-2 in Peach Belt Conference action. The Pacers began the 2011 year by winning two of their first four games, besting Pfeiffer and Brevard in the process. The strong start would then lead to three straight losses, but the Pacers began their best stretch of the 2011 season on Sept. 24 with a 1-1 double overtime tie with Lenoir-Rhyne. The tie with Lenoir-Rhyne was part of a stretch that saw USC Aiken acquire a positive result in four of its next five games. The impressive stretch included a 1-0 home Peach Belt Conference win over Georgia Southwestern at the “Pacer Pit” on Oct. 8. USC Aiken would then close out the year with one positive result in its last five outings. The Pacers finished the regular season eighth in the Peach Belt Conference. USC Aiken lost to eventual Peach Belt Conference Tournament champion and NCAA Elite Eight participant Flagler in the first round of the conference championship. USC Aiken’s Troy Watson was named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Tournament Team. Numerous Pacers received acclaim for their efforts on the pitch in the 2011 season with Chinedu Arinze claiming the majority of the accolades. Arinze was chosen to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference First-Team, the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team and the Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-Southeast Region Team. Arinze was one of five Pacers named to the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Academic Team, joining Scott Berry, Michael Poole, Jack Reynolds and Kofi Trim. Schevon Joseph was named Honorable Mention. Berry was also selected to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer District Three First-Team for his efforts in the classroom and on the playing field. Women’s Soccer The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s soccer team ended its 2011 campaign with a record of 4-12 under seventh-year head coach Sue Vodicka. USC Aiken was 1-9 in Peach Belt Conference play. USC Aiken started the year off to its best start since the 2005 season with a perfect 3-0 record. The Pacers opened the year with a thrilling 1-0 overtime win over Coker in Hartsville, S.C. on Sept. 1. USC Aiken then proceeded to best Newberry and Brevard in consecutive games.

Pacer goalkeeper Alli Edens was named the Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 7. The honor marked the first time that a Pacer women’s soccer goalkeeper had acquired the prestigious honor. The win over Brevard on Sept. 7 gave way to a stretch that would see USC Aiken lose its next six games. The Pacers snapped their six-game slide by beating Georgia Southwestern, 1-0, at the “Pacer Pit” on Oct. 8. The victory over Georgia Southwestern would prove to be the final one of the year for USC Aiken as they finished the 2011 season with six straight defeats. USC Aiken junior defender Emily Dodd was tabbed to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Soccer All-Academic Team at the conclusion of the year. Dodd was one of five Pacers noted as Paige Busby, Edens, Kyle Maguire and Jordan Ziegler were Honorable Mention selections. Cross Country The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s cross country team put together a strong season under first-year head coach Kara Kreutzer. The Pacers competed in seven meets in total in the 2011 season. They also played host to the Second Annual Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational and the Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championships for the first time. USC Aiken’s best team finish on the year came in the Gamecock Invitational. The Pacers finished second among all of the Division II teams in the Gamecock Invitational. The Pacers finished eighth as a team at the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship on Oct. 22. Keely Gillespie continued her assault on the Pacer cross country record books in the 2011 season. Gillespie finished the year at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional by claiming the top 6K time in school history with a time of 23:42.8. Gillespie will begin her junior season in 2012 owning two of the top three 6K times in school history. She also owns the top 5K time in school history with a time of 19:34. Gillespie concluded the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship in 14th place to obtain All-Conference accolades for the second straight year. Cassey Lloyd was named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country All-Academic Team. Volleyball The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team under the direction of fourth-year head coach Glenn Cox finished its 2011 season with a record of 15-16. The Pacers finished tied for third in the Peach Belt Conference during the regular season with a record of 7-7.

USC Aiken commenced the 2011 season by going 4-4 in its first eight matches. The start included USC Aiken finishing the 2011 USC Aiken Volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 record. USC Aiken’s Endea Ellison and Claire Patten were named to the 2011 USC Aiken Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Pacers bested West Georgia in their next match to move above .500 at 5-4, but the win over the Wolves gave way to a season-long five-match losing streak. USC Aiken then proceeded to rattle off 10 victories in their next 14 matches to improve to 15-13 and return to the national discussion. The strong run would catapult the Pacers into the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Rankings at No. 10. USC Aiken would hold down the 10th spot in the region poll for the rest of the regular season. USC Aiken concluded its year by losing its final three matches to just miss out on a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The fourth seed in the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Championship, USC Aiken lost a heartbreaker, 3-2, to rival Augusta State in the tournament quarterfinals. Shannon Byers and Samantha Lukralle both received All-Peach Belt Conference accolades at the conclusion of the season. The award was one of three for Lukralle. She was also chosen to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball District Three First-Team and the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team. Lukralle was one of four Pacers placed on the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team with Ashley Farwell, Chelsey Kight and Patten also earning spots on the team. Ellison and Emily Maassen were named Honorable Mention. Men’s Basketball The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s basketball team under the direction of seventh-year head coach Vince Alexander concluded the 2011-12 season with a 21-8 overall record. The Pacers have now claimed a 20-win season in four of the last five years. The USC Aiken men’s basketball program has won 110 games over the course of the last five years. The 110 wins ties them with College of Charleston and Benedict for the most wins in the Palmetto State over the course of the last five years. The Pacers had one of the best seasons in school history in their 2011-12 campaign. The Peach Belt Conference regular-season champions with a league mark of 14-4, USC Aiken made its fourth trip to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament in the last five years in the 2011-12 season. USC Aiken was ranked nationally for much of the 2011-12 season. The Pacers were never ranked lower than third in the Southeast Region rankings. In fact, USC Aiken closed the regular

season as No. 1 in the region rankings. USC Aiken would eventually earn the No. 2 seed in the Southeast Regional contested at Montevallo. The Pacers commenced the 2011-12 regular season by winning eight of their first nine games. USC Aiken would eventually close the first half of its 2011-12 season with an 8-2 record. USC Aiken would start 2012 strong by entering the national rankings at No. 19 early in January. The Pacers would go on to claim sole possession of the Peach Belt Conference regular-season championship. Pacer guards Sterling Council and Re’mon Nelson were both named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference Team. Council was a First-Team choice, while Nelson was selected to the Third-Team. Nelson, a junior, was also named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team. Alexander was chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year. Council, a senior, was chosen to the NCAA Division II Southeast Region All-District First-Team. He was also named to the 2012 Daktronics Division II Men’s Basketball All-Southeast Region Second-Team. USC Aiken sophomore guard Jesse Seilern was selected to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball District Three First-Team. He was also named to the 2011-12 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team. Women’s Basketball The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team under the direction of 10th-year head coach Mike Brandt has put together the best two-year run in school history over the last two seasons. The USC Aiken women’s basketball program has won 54 games over the last two seasons. The 54 victories leaves them one game above Lander (53) for the most wins in the state of South Carolina over the last two seasons. The 2011-12 USC Aiken women’s basketball team concluded its year ranked 12th in the final national poll. It marked the highest-ever final national ranking for the Pacers.

The USC Aiken women’s basketball team was ranked all of the 2011-12 season. It marked the first time in program history that the Pacers went an entire season in the top-25. In the last poll of the regular season on Mar. 6, USC Aiken tied a program high with a national ranking of seventh.

The 2011-12 season saw USC Aiken end the year with a record of 27-4. The four losses were the fewest in school history, while the 27 wins ties the 2010-11 team for most wins in a season. The Pacers’ winning percentage of .871 was also the best in school history.

USC Aiken’s tremendous 2011-12 season was punctuated by the Pacers winning the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Tournament crown. The tournament crown was the first in program history.

The Pacers, who won a school-record 12 straight games at one point during the regular season, would end their phenomenal year by playing host to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional for the first time in school history. The Pacers have now played in three of the last four NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournaments.

USC Aiken opened its year by winning nine of its first 10 games.

The Pacers would eventually close the regular season with a 16-2 mark in Peach Belt Conference play to acquire the Peach Belt Conference East Division crown for the second consecutive year.

Two Pacers would earn All-Peach Belt Conference accolades with sophomore forward Kayla Harris and senior forward Hannah DeGraffinreed both earning First-Team All-PBC plaudits. Both would be named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team with DeGraffinreed chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.

DeGraffinreed was also named a Daktronics Division II Women’s Basketball All-Southeast Region First-Team member. Harris was named a 2012 Honorable Mention All-America selection by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and the Women’s Division II Bulletin. She was also chosen to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive season. Four USC Aiken women’s basketball players were selected to the 2011-12 Peach Belt Conference Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. The four Pacers selected to the PBC All-Academic Team were Mia Antoine, Brittany Bowen, Porsha Martin and Daniela Tarailo. USC Aiken owned four of the 10 spots on the 2011-12 PBC Women’s Basketball All-Academic Team. Men’s Tennis

The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis team under the direction of 11th-year head coach Steven Dahm closed out the 2012 season with a 9-8 overall record.

The Pacers owned a 2-7 record in the Peach Belt Conference.

Nationally-ranked for the entire 2011-12 athletic year, USC Aiken commenced its year with a 3-0 record.

The Pacers would enter the middle of March clinging to a 5-2 record. The Pacers would drop the next three to fall to 5-5 on the year as the month of April began.

USC Aiken would close out the final month of the 2012 season by going 4-3.

The Pacers fell to national No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Guilherme Destefani ended the year ranked 20th regionally in singles.

Josh Rees ended his sophomore campaign by being tabbed to the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team.

Women’s Tennis

The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s tennis team under the tutelage of 11th-year head mentor Steven Dahm moved into the national rankings for the first time since 2008 in the 2012 season.

The Pacer women would finish the season with a 13-8 record while going 7-5 against Peach Belt Conference opponents. The league mark was good for the best conference record ever for USC Aiken.

USC Aiken was able to put together two four-game winning streaks during the season, which led to the Pacers winning eight of nine matches. The second streak was against Peach Belt opponents and included wins against nationally-ranked Augusta State and Clayton State.

The Pacers were knocked out of the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Tournament by the three-seed Francis Marion in the quarterfinals.

Margot Simon was ranked 16th regionally in singles and earned Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors on April 2, 2012. She was the first Pacer to ever claim league Women’s Tennis Player of the Week laurels.

Andrea Cediel garnered 2012 Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis All-Academic Team plaudits for her sophomore season.

Baseball

The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team had another successful year in the 2012 season under the direction of 13th-year head coach Kenny Thomas by going 37-18 overall and 18-12 in Peach Belt Conference competition. USC Aiken earned at least 30 wins for the 11th time in the past 13 seasons.

The Pacers were ranked almost all season, reaching as high as No. 3 nationally.

USC Aiken had a strong run in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as they came within a victory of the championship game before being knocked out by Lander.

Six players were selected to the Peach Belt All-Conference Team. Josh Miller and Nick Aranas were honored as First-Team members, and Stephen Carmon, Tyler Bourdo, Ryan Milewski and Will Tankersley were Second-Team honorees.

Tankersley was also tabbed as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, while Wyatt Brown and Miller were included on the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team.

Aranas and Miller earned 2012 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team selections.

Carmon, Aranas and Miller were included on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Team. Carmon was also tabbed as a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist. The award is given each year to the top player in Division II baseball.

Three Pacers garnered Peach Belt Conference All-Academic accolades with Thomas McLeod, Milewski and Tyler Stephan all earning the prestigious academic honor. McLeod was also named to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Baseball District Three First-Team.

Softball

The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team under the guidance of head coach Jerry Snyder in his 25th season compiled a 26-17 record in the 2012 season.

The 26 wins marks the 18th time in the last 19 seasons that the Pacers have earned at least 20 victories.

Snyder earned a milestone 600th career victory on April 6, 2012 with a victory against Pfeiffer in the first game of a doubleheader sweep.

USC Aiken went 10-10 in Peach Belt Conference play and went to the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament by defeating rival Augusta State 3-0 in the quarterfinals.

Kaitlyn White and India Kornegay were honored to the Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Tournament team for their performances. Kornegay, who broke numerous school single-season and career records during the 2012 season, also earned a Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Conference Second-Team selection.

Kayla Denham was honored for her work in the classroom by being selected to the Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Academic Team.

Golf

The University of South Carolina Aiken golf team had another strong year with Michael Carlisle at the helm for his 22nd year in the 2011-12 season.

USC Aiken reached as high as No. 1 nationally during the 2011-12 season. In total, the Pacers finished second or better in five of their 13 tournaments. The Pacers claimed the team title at Lander’s Bearcat Golf Classic.

Two Pacers claimed individual victories during the 2011-12 season with Taylor Welborn starting the year for the Pacers by winning the Kiawah Island Invitational. Matt Atkins claimed individual medalist honors at the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional.

USC Aiken’s strong campaign led to berths in both the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional and the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship.

USC Aiken got through the stroke play portion of the NCAA Division II National Championship by finishing seventh, which paired them against eventual National Champion Nova Southeastern in the quarterfinals of the match play portion of the national championship. The Pacers fell 4-1.

Both JP Solis and Matt Atkins were selected to the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf All-Conference Team. Atkins also earned a spot on the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golf All-Academic Team.

Atkins garnered other awards as well by being named to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s At-Large All-America Second-Team. He was a Division II PING First-Team All-America selection.

Cheerleaders and Dance Team In addition to USC Aiken’s 11 intercollegiate sports, the cheerleaders and dance programs are an integral part of the athletic department. For the 2011-12 academic year, these programs represented USC Aiken in parades, performed at the local high schools, were judges in other cheerleading tryouts and assisted the athletic department in countless hours of fundraising, not to mention all their performances at the basketball games.

The Cheerleaders did not compete in the PBC Championships once again due to the change in their philosophy from being a competitive program to a more “spirit” oriented group. The Dance Team finished second at the PBC Championship, but they finished first nationally in both the hip-hop and jazz portion of the Cheer Ltd. National competition.

Whitney Arnold was named the Dance Team most valuable player, while Gabrielle Davis was selected as the Cheerleaders’ most valuable player.

Drug Testing USCA supports the NCAA Division II Statement regarding substance abuse. We are committed and dedicated to promoting and preserving the integrity of athletics for the benefit and welfare of our student-athletes. USCA uses Augusta Laboratories to screen/evaluate all drug tests. Urine samples are tested for: • Amphetamines • Barbiturates • Benodiazepines (Valium and similar tranquilizers) • Barbiturates • Cannaboio (marijuana) • Cocaine • Methaqualone (Qualudes) • Opiates (Heroin and other opium derivatives) • Phencyclidine (PCP or “Angel Dust”) During the 2011-12 fiscal year, USCA conducted a total of 131 drug tests. Of those 131, there were six confirmed positives.

Marketing, Promotions, Fund Raising, and NCAA 2011- 2012

The 2011- 2012 academic year marked another successful year in the area of marketing and athletic fundraising/donations. Through the departments various marketing, promotions, fund raising projects, Global Spectrum agreement and NCAA/PBC enhancements and reimbursements, more than $382,000 was generated.

• The year kicked off with USCA student-athletes and coaches going out into the community to do community service. Each team was assigned a different organization or business to go and perform some sort of community service.

• The Positively Pacers event was held Friday, August 19, 2011. This “Pep Rally” kicked off the sports year to faculty, staff, students and the community members.

• Based on the CISIONPOINT Reports, for the period of July 1, 2011 – June 30, 2012, there were a total of 2,393 placements in the media – about 800 more than the previous year. The publicity value for the past fiscal year totaled $984,457……..from July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 Pacer Athletics Coverage had 1,565 placements. During FY 2008-2009 Pacer Athletics Coverage had 1,564 placements.

• USC Aiken’s official athletic website, www.PacerSports.com, from July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012 had 17,820,068 hits and a total of 921,700 unique visitors. An average of almost 77,000 unique visitors came to USC Aiken’s official athletic website each month. The biggest month of the year for PacerSports.com came in March of 2012 with the website collecting 2,400,424 hits and 110,224 unique visitors over the course of the month.

• For the fourth year in a row, Pacer basketball games were broadcast live via the internet. In addition, several volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer games/matches were also webcast.

• USCA had some success with Strategic Marketing Affiliates, INC. (SMA) and Veracity Payment Solutions and the Presto Sports Photo Store in generating several thousand dollars of additional income for athletics.

• Athletic department exposure also increased with the continuation of the Student Athlete of the Week and Month programs, which were administered by the SID Office.

• Pacer Club memberships and “reserved seats” at basketball games remained strong during the 2011- 2012 year. Almost $24,000 was generated through Pacer Club memberships and reserved seat sales.

50 Years of Pacer Athletics (1961-62 Through 2011-12)

The University of South Carolina Aiken celebrated its 50th year as an institution in the 2011-12 athletic year.

The USC Aiken Athletic Department helped to celebrate the momentous occasion in a variety of ways.

One of the things done by the USC Aiken Athletic Department to celebrate the 50 years of USC Aiken athletics was by coming up with a special document that captures special moments from each of the 50 years.

The 50 Years of Pacer Athletics document was researched by the Athletic Department and it breaks down some of the most important moments in the history of USC Aiken athletics.

Along with the 50 Years of Pacer Athletics document, the USC Aiken Athletic Department honored its past, present and future by having its student-athletes wear special commemorative patches with USC Aiken’s 50th Anniversary logo.

Early in September of 2011, a special Wall of Fame in the Convocation Center lobby was also unveiled. The Wall of Fame honors every student-athlete who has ever won an award while at USC Aiken. The Wall of Fame also honors all of the teams and coaches at USC Aiken who have received recognition from conference, region or national levels.

Positively Pacers – Giving Back and Promoting the Pacer Cause

The University of South Carolina Aiken is a proud member of NCAA Division II.

Two of the things that make NCAA Division II the place to be for USC Aiken is its stance on a positive game environment and its affinity for community engagement.

To this end, USC Aiken always makes sure to do various things to promote a positive game environment such as having student-athletes read positive game environment statements via taped segments and doing unique things like having a mascot summit between Ace the Pacer and Augusta State’s Al. E. Cat prior to the USC Aiken-Augusta State rivalry basketball meetings. The Pacers are involved with the community year round, but last year a unique tradition was started and it will be continued this year with a few more things added.

“To me, this is all about tying in our positive environment and our community involvement,” noted USC Aiken athletic director Randy Warrick. “We want our student-athletes to go out and be involved in the community. The Aiken community does so much for us and this is a way for us to give back once again.”

The city of Aiken celebrated “Positively Pacers” week Aug. 15-21, 2011. The “Positively Pacers” week was a lead-in to the Pacer athletic campaign as the 2011-12 USC Aiken athletic year began in the month of August with fall 2011 Pacer student-athletes reporting for preseason camp on Friday, Aug. 12.

To celebrate the start of the special week once again, Aiken Mayor Fred Cavanaugh, USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Thomas Hallman, USC Aiken Athletic Director Randy Warrick and many others gathered together on Aug. 3 for a picture commemorating the momentous event.

USC Aiken student-athletes helped promote USC Aiken athletics by doing community service projects throughout Aiken with Pacer student-athletes, coaches and even Ace showing up throughout Aiken to help out worthy causes during the “Positively Pacers” week.

The culmination of the “Positively Pacers” week was held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 at the Convocation Center. The “Positively Pacers” event was a unique pep rally designed to get everyone excited about the 2011-12 Pacer athletic year.

The event was co-sponsored by the USC Aiken athletic department and the USC Aiken office of student involvement.

There was free food and giveaways throughout the evening. All of the Pacer athletic teams were in attendance and each gave a short presentation about their upcoming years.

As a way to promote the Pacer cause, all of those that brought another schools t-shirt (high school or college) were able to turn that shirt in for a free Pacers t-shirt.

The “Positively Pacers” event was free and open to the public.

City of Aiken Declares Jan. 16, 2012 USC Aiken Flag Day

Aiken Mayor Fred B. Cavanaugh and the City of Aiken declared Monday, Jan. 16 as USC Aiken Flag Day.

The special day was a lead-in and part of USC Aiken’s men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader against rival Augusta State on Monday, Jan. 16 at the Convocation Center.

“To me, USC Aiken Flag Day is all about tying in our positive environment and our community involvement once again,” noted USC Aiken Athletic Director Randy Warrick. “USC Aiken strives to have a positive game environment at all of our contests for the faculty, staff, supporters, visiting fans, players, coaches and officials. USC Aiken Flag Day is the perfect way for everyone to show their Pacer pride in the Aiken community.”

To celebrate USC Aiken flag day, the USC Aiken Athletic Department gave away 300 special commemorative Pacer flags to Pacer stakeholders to show their pride around Aiken on Monday, Jan. 16 and beyond.

Prior to the start of the doubleheader against Augusta State on Monday, Jan. 16, USC Aiken, thanks to the efforts of Aiken Staffing Associates and Papa John’s, gave away special towel flags for all fans in attendance to wave around and support the Pacers. The towel flags were given out to those in attendance upon their arrival to the Convocation Center.

To kick off USC Aiken Flag Day, Mayor Cavanaugh, USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Thomas Hallman, USC Aiken Athletic Director Randy Warrick, USC Aiken Convocation Center General Manager Matthew A. Herpich, Aiken Staffing Associates Vice President for Operations Laura Smith and Papa John’s Pizza Operating Partner Eddie Jordan gathered together for a picture commemorating the momentous event.

USC Aiken Flag Day was part of USC Aiken’s continued community engagement efforts in the 2011-12 athletic year.

USC Aiken Inducts Eight Into Athletic Hall of Fame

The University of South Carolina Aiken athletic department inducted eight new members into the USC Aiken Athletic Hall of Fame during a formal ceremony on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012 at the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken’s third induction class comprised two separate foursomes. The USC Aiken Hall of Fame committee votes on new membership each year, but an induction ceremony is held every two years.

The first foursome featured student-athletes from three different varsity sports at USC Aiken. New members of the USC Aiken Athletic Hall of Fame included Richard Abney (baseball), Ashley Farr (baseball), Mike Green (men’s soccer) and Kendrick Smith (men’s basketball).

The USC Aiken Hall of Fame committee selected the foursome on Monday, June 28, 2010.

The second foursome featured student-athletes from four different varsity sports at USC Aiken. New members of the USC Aiken Athletic Hall of Fame included Sean Gunn (men’s basketball), Meredith Legg (women’s basketball), Ed Reevey (golf) and Adam Riggs (baseball).

The USC Aiken Hall of Fame committee selected the foursome on Tuesday, Apr. 12, 2011.

“This is really an outstanding group of student-athletes,” noted USC Aiken Athletic Director Randy Warrick. “These eight deserving individuals are truly a tremendous addition to our top-notch Athletic Hall of Fame.”

The eight new members join the 17 current inducted members of the USC Aiken Athletic Hall of Fame.

The initial class included (Nov. 30, 2007): Lew Perkins (former Athletic Director and men's basketball coach), Johanna Gibbs (former volleyball and women's basketball coach), Roberto Hernandez (baseball), Bill Weeks (men's basketball), Faye Ryans Norris (women's basketball), Charlie Colclough (baseball), Greg Gibson (men's basketball), Tisha England (women's basketball), Kim Merrill Brooks (volleyball), Roxanna Rivera Tirado (volleyball), Brian Kassel (golf), Brooks Blackburn (golf) and Jamie Stanley (golf).

Inducted into the second USC Aiken Athletic Hall of Fame class (Feb. 19, 2010) were Dr. James Barham (former team doctor), Jami Cornwell (softball and women's basketball), Derek Moore (men's basketball) and Dru McPherson Nix (women's basketball and volleyball).
