The University of Utah

The University of Utah athletics program will begin its membership in the prestigious Pac-12 Conference beginning in 2011-12. Founded in 1850, the University of Utah now encompasses 1,500 acres in the foothills of the towering Wasatch Mountain range. The campus is located just minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and world-class ski resorts, and includes an eclectic mix of teaching and research facilities in a park-like setting of trees, fountains, flowering malls and pedestrian walkways.

Home to a student population of over 29,000, the U. offers some 100 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors. Many of the U’s programs are nationally ranked, including law, pharmacy, architecture, business, engineering and dance.

Utah ranks among the top public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. In 2009-2010, the University received a record-setting $450.6 million in external funding for research. University of Utah geneticist Mario R. Capecchi, one of many acclaimed faculty members, received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his work on gene targeting.

The Eccles Institute of Human Genetics is one of several innovative medical programs at the University of Utah. Others include the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Moran Eye Center and the Brain Institute.

The U. is also noted for its work in technology and computer sciences; and its Center for High Performance Computing serves as a link to major aerospace industries, high-tech manufacturers and research companies. The University is tied for first in the nation with MIT in successfully commercializing the discoveries that occur on campus.

Consistently cited as one of the nation’s most livable cities, Salt Lake City ranks high for its employment and cultural opportunities, quality of life and recreation. In the May 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine selected Salt Lake City as “The Best City for Jobs” in both 2007 and 2008.

Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. As an academic institution, the University of Utah enjoys a richly deserved reputation for excellence in education. The Utah athletics department works to ensure that each of its student-athletes takes advantage of the academic opportunities offered. With three full-time athletic academic advisors, the U. provides specialized academic counseling for its student-athletes.

The U. employs four full-time academic advisers for its student-athletes. The department is under the direction of Director of Athletic-Academic Services Lucas Moosman. Rob Rainey oversees the academic counseling for the ski team. Also on the staff are Matt Leituala and Beth Brennan.

The Ute academic team monitors the studies of each student-athlete to ensure he or she is making progress toward a degree. The academic advisors also dispense their knowledge of departmental and University requirements, and assist with course registration and the exploration and selection of majors.

Best GPAThe women’s ski team had the highest overall grade point average of any athletics team at Utah during the 2010 fall semester. The Ute skiers are often among the teams with the best GPA.

The Utah ski team has a variety of resources available to them, from state-of-the-art training facilities to a top-notch staff. The athletes weight train in the 7,500 square foot Dee Glen Smith Center. The elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes. The strength and conditioning program concentrates on strength training, speed development, flexibility, mental toughness, conditioning, injury prevention and motivation. Under the direction of Doug Elisaia, the director of strength and conditioning, the skiing teams work with strength and conditioning graduate assistant Kenny Ruffino.

To care for the athlete’s injuries, the Utah athletics program maintains a partnership with a veteran sports medicine team supervised by Dr. Bob Burks, director of the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center at Red Butte Clinic. The sports medicine staff is headed by head trainer Trevor Jameson and associate trainer Deb Willardson, while the ski team works with Mark Moffitt and Connie Tidwell on a daily basis.

Other resources available to Utah skiers to care for their physical well being include a sports psychologist and nutritionist.

“We are all really excited about our 2012 team,” head Alpine coach Jaka Korencan said. “The depth of our talent, work ethic, and dedication our student-athletes are showing is just amazing and I feel strongly that this team can be one of the strongest teams Utah has ever had. The senior class on both the men’s and women’s side is definitely our strength. They all have rich NCAA experience, and unparalleled leadership skills.”

The Ute men’s Alpine competitors were second at the national meet and Utah has all three of last year’s NCAA Championships participants returning. Torjus Krogdahl is a four-time All-American over his career after finishing in the top seven of both the slalom and giant slalom at last year’s national meet. Ryan Wilson earned the first All-American recognition of his career after claiming third place in the country in the giant slalom last season. Jeremy Elliot also represented Utah at last season’s NCAA Championships and is looking for improved results after an impressive summer and fall of training. Nick Cohee, Eian Sandvik and newcomer Tim Hribar will also vie for the right to represent Utah in the national meet.

The Ute women’s Alpine group has two returners from last year’s squad that took third place in their respective event at the 2011 NCAA’s. Tii-Maria Romar posted a pair of All-American performances in her first-ever experience at the NCAA Championships, while Anna Kocken earned All-American honors in her second career race at the NCAA Championships, the slalom. Jaime DuPratt returns to the fold as well after posting a season-best eighth-place finish in the first slalom run at the New Mexico Invitational. Newcomer Julie Bordeau is expected to be in the mix as well. Bordeau comes to Utah with a lot of international experience after representing the French National Ski Team.

Confidence. Continuity. Balance. After a runner-up finish at last season’s NCAA Championships, these are the three characteristics that the University of Utah ski team hopes will help it jump one spot at the NCAA Championships on Mar. 7-10 in Bozeman, Mont., for its 12th national title in program history.

“We have the potential to improve that one spot,” Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. “As a team, we’re coming in with a tremendous amount of maturity with what could be the largest group of seniors I’ve ever had. We have the potential to be the best team in the country, but it certainly will not be easy. I know firsthand that other programs have done an excellent job recruiting so the competition will be really exciting.”

Confidence comes from a roster that has eight seniors and 10 student-athletes who competed for the Utes at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

“Once the national competition starts, realistically we have to have 10 of those 12 skiers post All-American finishes,” Sweeney said. “We have to have somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of the team at the championships scoring in the top 10 in each discipline. That’s not easy to do. Some of the factors you can’t control, whether it’s injury or illness, but obviously we’ll try our best. What we have going for us goes back to the maturity aspect of our team and the confidence that comes with it.”

Continuity in the team is an element that Sweeney enjoyed last season and is hopeful that it will even improve as he enters the second year of his second stint as Utah’s Director of Skiing.

“Like every sport, there are some extremely stressful times,” Sweeney said. “Snow conditions were difficult at last year’s NCAA Championships and as a group, the student-athletes and coaching staff worked amazingly well together. It is so valuable to have that for another year, not only from my perspective, but from the athletes’. We have a really good relationship. We can find comfort and support and we can laugh when it’s hard. That’s very important, especially when the season gets really intense and it will be.”

Balance with top performers across the board in each race has Sweeney enthusiastic about the upcoming season.

“Our strength as a team lies in how balanced we are,” Sweeney said. “We have several podium candidates in each discipline. It’s very special when you’re this well-balanced. We’re a small team [in terms of numbers]. The positive is that it’s a very manageable group size to have really good training sessions, for example. The downfall is that we need to be really careful with injury and illness.”

Miles Havlick turned in a pair of top-10 finishes at last season’s national meet en route to being named Ski Racing Magazine’s Men’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year.

Tii-Maria Romar earned a pair of All-American honors during the 2011 NCAA Championship.

“As a coach, it is rare and exciting to have an opportunity to work with such a talented and experienced group of athletes,” Head Nordic coach Abi Holt said. “Every member of this year’s Nordic team is a returning member from last year, so this is an established team and a very mature group of student athletes. The shift from summer training to fall training was smooth and I am expecting a similarly smooth move into the winter racing season. I am truly excited to see what we will accomplish this coming race season.”

The Utah men’s Nordic team will have all three of its 2011 NCAA Championships representatives back this season. The group finished second at last season’s national meet and was paced by Ski Racing Magazine’s Men’s Nordic Skier of the Year Miles Havlick, who turned in a podium finish at last season’s national meet with a third-place effort in the 10k classical and finished sixth in the 10k freestyle. Didrik Smith returns to the Ute roster after taking home a pair of All-American awards after taking fifth in the 20k freestyle and sixth in the 10k freestyle. Tom Smith posted 10 top-25 finishes last season and returns with Rolf Figi, who took fifth in the 10k freestyle at last year’s RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships.

Utah took second in the women’s Nordic competition, led by Maria Graefnings, who was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association Female Skier of the Year, FasterSkier.com Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year and Ski Racing Magazine’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year for 2011. Graefnings returns to Utah after winning the NCAA 5k freestyle title for the first time in her career and taking second in the women’s 15k classical race. Marta Larsen also competed well at nationals as she was 12th in the 15k classical and 17th in the 5k freestyle race at nationals. Rose Kemp, Parker Tyler and Mali Noyes round out a very experienced and close-knit women’s squad.

Kevin Sweeney is entering the second season of his second stint as Director of Skiing at the University of Utah. He returned to lead the Utah program in September of 2010 and led the Utes to a runner-up finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

In addition to its second-place finish at the national meet in 2011, Utah finished second at the NCAA West Regional/ Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association Championships and was awarded the RMISA regular-season title.

Individually, Maria Graefnings and Miles Havlick were named Ski Racing Magazine’s 2011 Nordic Collegiate Skiers of the Year. Graefnings was also recognized as the FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year and the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP.

Sweeney continues to build a solid reputation in the ranks of collegiate ski racing and now plans to carry on the Ute ski team’s tradition of excellence. As the leader of a program that is so rich in tradition and vying for the NCAA title each year, Sweeney emphasizes excellence in the classroom and on the racecourse.

In seven seasons under Sweeney’s direction, the Utes experienced a great deal of national success. In addition to the school’s 11th NCAA title in 2003, the Utes captured two NCAA runner-up finishes and two bronze medals while earning 16 NCAA individual championships, 36 All-American honors and four Olympians.

Sweeney is a two-time recipient of Utah’s prestigious Don Reddish Award (2003 and 2011), which is presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics, who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year. Sweeney also chaired the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and was also a member of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s Cross Country Skiing Committee He was also an assistant on the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff at the World Championships in Ramsau, Austria.

Sweeney became an assistant coach with the Utah ski program in 1991, he was given the opportunity to work with one of the most prominent ski programs in the nation. His first stretch as the Director of Skiing ran from 2000-05.

Sweeney remained active in the ski community during his hiatus as the National Director of Competition for Swix Sport USA.As a competitive skier, Sweeney represented the University of New Hampshire in NCAA competition and represented the U.S. Ski Team in World Cup competition at Mountain Dell, Utah, and Biwabik, Minn. He graduated from UNH cum laude in 1985. An avid outdoorsman, Sweeney immensely enjoys the mountains and desert of Utah.

Abi Holt begins her third season as head Nordic coach for the University of Utah ski team.

Holt guided Utah’s Nordic squads to a dominating season in 2011 and helped the Utes to a second-place NCAA finish, led by the top qualifiers for nordic on both the men’s and women’s side. For her efforts, Holt was named the 2011 RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year.

Two of Holt’s pupils earned several honors last season. Maria Graefnings won the NCAA 5k freestyle title and claimed second place in the 15k classical. Graefnings was also named Ski Racing Magazine’s Women’s Nordic Collegiate Skiers of the Year, FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year as well as the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP. Miles Havlick was named Ski Racing Magazine’s Men’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year and was an honorable mention selection for FasterSkier.com’s Men’s Collegiate Skier of the Year honor.

Holt comes to Utah from Hollyburn Ski Club in Vancouver, B.C., where she spent a year as the first-ever head coach for the club. She coached Hollyburn’s first four athletes that qualified for the National Championships and the first three athletes to be named to the B.C. Provincial Development Squad.

Prior to Hollyburn, Holt spent five years as the Assistant Nordic Program Director and Ski Coach at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

Holt has been coaching for 12 years and has coached six U.S. National Junior Champions and two national champions. She coached four winters in Europe with the U.S. Ski Team at the J1 Scandinavian Championships, Scando Cup, Europa Cup and World Junior Championships. Holt has also spent time training athletes in Sweden, Norway and New Zealand.

Holt, who hails from Sun Valley, Idaho, was a three-time national junior champion and a 17-time Junior All-American for the Sun Valley Nordic ski team. She was on the U.S. National Junior Development ski team for five years and spent four years racing at Dartmouth College, earning All-American honors for the Big Green in addition to being a two-time team captain.

“With two of our top racers returning, a couple great recruits and great leadership in the program, I am really looking forward to continuing the growth and momentum we built last year,” Holt said. “I believe we are poised for a great season.”

Jaka Korencan begins his 12th season with the University of Utah ski team where he has served as Head Alpine Coach for the past seven years.

During his tenure, Korencan has driven the Ute alpine contingent to consistently be among the best in the country, delivering 20 All-American athletes, seven NCAA Championship Medals, and two NCAA champions.

Korencan has also guided numerous individual successes during his years as Head Alpine Coach. Eva Huckova was a six-time All-American and 2010 NCAA Giant Slalom Champion. Tague Thorson, who finished the 2008 regular season as the top overall men’s alpine qualifier, became one of just a handful of alpine skiers (men or women) to reach the U.S. Ski Team as a collegiate skier. Utah alpine national champions during his 12-year tenure as a coach include Scott Veenis, Ben Thornhill, Jemej Bukovec, Petra Svet and Lina Johansson.

Additionally, under Korencan’s guidance, the Ute alpine team has consistently delivered stellar academic results, achieving the highest average team GPA levels. Most recently, five alpine athletes were named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year, with Eva Huckova and Torjus Krogdahl leading the MWC in GPA performance. Huckova and Krogdahl were also named an Academic All Americans.

A native of Slovenia, Korencan earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Utah in 2004, and in 2007 he completed a master’s degree in Sport Psychology.

“Student-athletes at the University of Utah are getting extraordinary support from the athletic department and the University itself,” he said. “The University provides student athletes an outstanding environment to develop their athleticism as well as gain a world class education. This team has a rich tradition of excellence, and I am extremely excited, motivated, and honored to lead this team to continued success.”

Will McDonald is beginning his second season on the Ute coaching staff. This is his first full-time coaching appointment after coaching ski racing during the summer for the last five years.

McDonald has an accomplished past in ski racing as he was the first American, along with Lindsey Vonn, to win a race at Topolin. They both took slalom titles. He also won two gold medals at the Whistler Cup in the slalom and the giant slalom. At age 18, McDonald was ranked in the top 15 in slalom for the U.S., before starting his collegiate racing career at the University of Utah in 2003. He qualified for the NCAA Championships three times before graduating in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science and Health.

He won his first FIS race at the age of 15, competing against college athletes, and was ranked No. 1 in the world for his age in slalom from age 14 to 16. The Aspen, Colo., native started skiing at the age of 3.

McDonald is now working toward a master’s degree in Environmental Science within the PMST program at the U. of U.

Utah Records At A Glance• Utah has 10 NCAA Championships, which ranks third all-time. The Utes also won an AIAW title in 1978, bringing their total to 11.

• Utah’s 64 individual national championships ranks third all-time.

• Marvin Melville won three individual titles in 1959 – downhill, slalom and Alpine. The three titles in one year ties for the most in NCAA history.

• Four Utes combined to win five individual titles in 1995, the NCAA record for most individual championships by one school in a season. Harvard Solbakken (10-km freestyle), Heidi Selnes (5-km freestyle and 15-km classical) Thomas Weman (20-km classical), and Christl Hager (giant slalom) all won titles for Utah that season.

• Christl Hager is the only three-time repeat champion in Utah history, which also ties the national record. She won the giant slalom in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

Men’s All-Americans

Eva Huckova was a six-time All-American from 2008-11 and also posted four podium finishes at the NCAA Championships. She won the 2010 NCAA giant slalom title, took second-place honors in two races and recorded a third-place finish at the national meet during her career.
