The University of Utah

Founded in 1850, the University of Utah encompasses 1,500 acres in the foothills of the towering Wasatch Mountains. Located just minutes from downtown Salt Lake City and world-class ski resorts, its campus combines an eclectic mix of teaching and research facilities in a park-like setting of trees, fountains, flowering malls and pedestrian walkways with incomparable views of the Salt Lake valley.

Home to a student population of over 30,000, the U. offers some 100 undergraduate and 90 graduate majors. Many of the U.’s programs are nationally ranked, including law, pharmacy, architecture, business, engineering and dance. Students come from all 50 states and many foreign countries.

Utah ranks among the top public research universities in the nation, with particular distinction in medicine, genetics and engineering. The U. was honored at the 2012 Utah Genius Awards for most U.S. patents of any company (49), and faculty member Stephen Jacobsen of the Department of Mechanical Engineering won the lifetime achievement award.

In 2010, University of Utah Health Care was ranked No. 1 in quality in the nation among academic medical centers. The Eccles Institute of Human Genetics is one of several innovative medical programs at the U. Others include the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Moran Eye Center and the Brain Institute. The U.’s David Eccles School of Business has joined the U.S. News & World Report list of the top 10 most-popular business schools in the nation.

The U. is also noted for its work in technology and computer sciences. The University’s School of Computing was founded in 1965, and began a pioneering legacy in computer graphics and visualization that continues today.

A lively residential living experience is provided in the beautiful Heritage Commons, which served as the Athletes Village for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Employment opportunities, culture, quality of life and recreation are some of the reasons why Salt Lake City is consistently named one of the nation’s best cities. In the June 2010 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, Salt Lake City was No. 5 on its list of the “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” Forbes Magazine ranked Salt Lake City the third-best big city for jobs and fourth-best city for tech jobs in May 2012. Nestled between the Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake, the city is located in one of the most picturesque places on earth. As an academic institution, the University of Utah enjoys a richly deserved reputation for excellence in education. The Utah athletics department works to ensure that each of its student-athletes takes advantage of the academic opportunities offered. With three full-time athletic academic advisors, the U. provides specialized academic counseling for its student-athletes.

The U. employs four full-time academic advisers for its student-athletes. The department is under the direction of Director of Academic Services Erik Weierholt. Albert Brennan oversees the academic counseling for the ski team.

The Ute academic team monitors the studies of each student-athlete to ensure he or she is making progress toward a degree. The academic advisors also dispense their knowledge of departmental and University requirements, and assist with course registration and the exploration and selection of majors.

BestGPAThe women’s ski team posted a combined 3.683 GPA during the 2011-12 academic year, which was the highest mark within the entire athletic department.

Twelve members of the Ute ski team were selected to the University of Utah Dean’s List for the 2012 spring semester, while a total of 19 student-athletes were named the Utah Athletics Honor Roll.

The Utah ski team has a variety of resources available to them, from state-of-the-art training facilities to a top-notch staff. The athletes weight train in the 7,500 square foot Dee Glen Smith Center. The elite training facility has 16 full racks with Olympic platforms, a large dumbbell training area complete with 12 0-90 degree incline walk-up benches, and a large cardiovascular area complete with treadmills, cross trainers, stair steppers and spin bikes. The strength and conditioning program concentrates on strength training, speed development, flexibility, mental toughness, conditioning, injury prevention and motivation. The Utah Alpine team works with Jon Webster, the head strength coach for Olympic Sports, while the Ute Nordic skiers train with strength and conditioning coach Charles Stephenson.

To care for the athletes’ injuries, the Utah athletics program maintains a partnership with a veteran sports medicine team supervised by Dr. Bob Burks, director of the University of Utah Sports Medicine Center at Red Butte Clinic. The sports medicine staff is headed by head trainer Trevor Jameson and associate trainer Deb Willardson, while the ski team works with Mark Moffitt and Tii-Maria Romar on a daily basis.

Other resources available to Utah skiers to care for their physical well being include a sports psychologist and nutritionist.

MilesHavlickenters his final season of eligibility with 19 career podium finishes and six career victories. The Boulder, Colo., native is the two-time, reigning Ski Racing Magazine’s Men’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year and a five-time All-American.

Four newcomers will join Havlick on the course, including Noé Bellet (last year’s French champion in Skiathlon and Vice France champion in Sprint), Tucker McCrerey (ranked in the top 30 in the US for sprinting and posted impressive results at Junior Championships), Einar Ulsund (who took ninth place in the 50-km mass start skate at the Norwegian national championships in 2009 and was 14th in 2010) and Niklas Persson (who won the Swedish Junior Championships 10-km race and took third at the NJC Double Pursuit 20km).

“This group is where one of the largest turnovers on the team can be found so we have a lot of newcomers,” Sweeney said. “There certainly are some unknowns, but Miles is incredibly hungry to finish up his senior year and if he stays on track, he’ll definitely be the leader of this group. What I like about this squad is that we’re bringing in some very extremely experienced skiers with high-level national and international experience. At the same time, we’re bringing in some excellent talent at the younger level, like Einar, Tucker, Niklas and Noé.”

“After graduating a trio of successful, veteran RMISA skiers last year, we knew we had some work to do in rebuilding our men’s team for this season,” Head Nordic Coach Abi Holt said. “I knew that we had tracked down some great athletes, but you just never know how the team chemistry will shake out until they have a chance to get out and train together. This fall has gone well, and I’m happy with how this team is shaping up. I think this men’s team is strong, and I have a hunch that they will just continue to build momentum throughout the upcoming racing season.”

The senior trio of RoseKemp, Parker Tyler and MartaLarsen will anchor Utah’s women’s Nordic crew. Each has competed on a silver medal NCAA Championships team and would love to improve upon that result.

The duo of Sloan Storey and AnnaSvendsen will join the roster with impressive credentials. Storey qualified for the Junior Olympics each of the last four years, while Svendsen made her World Cup debut last March and also took 16th in the sprint classic at the Norway National Championships last year.

“We’re returning several athletes in this group,” Sweeney said. “Each of the returning skiers have NCAA experience. Certainly, Rose, Parker and Marta are some of the top skiers in the RMISA and I like what we’ve done with the recruiting. Anna and Sloan should add a real punch to this squad.”

“Our seniors have really stepped up to their leadership roles this year,” Holt said. “Rose, Parker, and Marta have a lot of RMISA racing experience among them, and a lot of skiing wisdom to share with the incoming team members. From day one, it has been a pleasure to see the senior women pull the freshmen women into the fold, and I think this makes a tremendous difference in easing the transition into college racing. I can’t wait to see the results this group will generate this season.”

After not hosting a meet during the 2012 season, the Utes look forward to having the Utah Invitational on their schedule with Alpine events on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 in Park City and the Nordic races on Feb. 8-9 in Soldier Hollow.

“Last season was tough without a home invitational,” Sweeney said. “It’s going to be really nice for us to be home and not be on the road so much. Everyone is looking forward to that both the student-athletes as well as our alumnae. Since we are going to host the 2014 NCAA Championships, that’s certainly going to play in because people are really excited to come here and race on what will be the championships venues. It should be some great racing.”

The Ute men’s Alpine competitors welcome back two athletes who have competed in the national meet, including senior RyanWilson, who finished second in the men’s giant slalom race for his best finish ever at the NCAA Championships in 2012. Jeremy Elliot was an All-RMISA selection in 2011 and went on to place 11th in the slalom and 34th in the GS that season at nationals.

TimHribarcomes back for his sophomore season after finishing in the top 10 three times and serving as the alternate for the NCAA Championships during his freshman season. Redshirt freshman Eian Sandvik and incoming freshman AndyTrow, who is a member of the Canadian National team, will also join the Utes for the 2013 campaign.

“This is a group that we have the most returning student-athletes with experience in collegiate competition,” Sweeney said. “They’re a tight-knit squad. This is a dynamic group of student-athletes. What’s going to go on with this group is some spirited inter-squad competition to determine who’s going to end up making the NCAA three. I’m really looking forward to it. Each one of these student-athletes has the potential to be on the NCAA podium. I like the mix that this group has. They are balanced in technique, slalom and GS, and there’s good NCAA experience with Ryan and Jeremy.”

Junior JaimeDuPratt emerged last season as one of the RMISA’s top performers after earning All-RMISA Second Team honors and posting her first career victory in the slalom at the Alaska Anchorage Invitational. A pair of accomplished competitors will join DuPratt, including AnaKobal(a member of the Slovenian National Team for the last six years who also won the 2012 Slovenian giant slalom national championship) and KristiinaRove(member of the Finnish National Team in the European Cup from 2010 through 2012).

“The highlight of this group is the level of experience that they have,” Sweeney said. “Jaime, who will now be competing in her third year after having a breakout season last year, and was winning runs and has developed into an excellent collegiate racer. Now you bring in Ana and Kristiina, who have not raced in college, however they have skied at an extremely high level on the international scene so they bring experience, intensity, confidence and credibility.”

Utes feature blend of experienced upperclassmen and enthusiastic newcomers.

After finishing second overall at the NCAA Championships each of the last two seasons, the University of Utah ski team is looking to continue its track record of recent success in 2013, while keeping an eye out for the 12th national title in school history at the national meet in Middlebury, Vt., Mar. 6-9, 2013.

“If certain things fall in our favor, we could be ready to vie for the title,” Utah Director of Skiing KevinSweeney said. “The reason why I say that is we do have a nice combination of returning athletes who have demonstrated they can score well in the RMISA as well as the NCAAs. At the same time, we’ve brought in excellent recruits who have already competed at a very high level. When I look at this squad from an overall perspective, I do think we’re balanced and able to score well in each of the disciplines, both Alpine and Nordic. If we’re able to carry that through the season and go into the championships healthy, we can give the title a run. That’s certainly what we’re gunning for.”

A combination of veteran wisdom and an energetic corps of newcomers rejuvenated Utah’s team chemistry during offseason as the Utes will feature nine returners, seven of whom have prior experience at the NCAA Championships, as well as nine new team members joining the squad for their first season, but have competed in top-notch national and international competitions throughout their respective careers.

“We have a group of newcomers that knows how to compete at the NCAA level and we have this new group that’s full of energy,” Sweeney said. “They’re pushing the juniors and seniors in workouts. They’re excited to be here and have really engaged in what this program has to offer. They’re happy, motivated and doing well academically so this makes the chemistry extremely positive. I really view that as strength of this team. The cohesion of such a new group has exceeded far beyond my expectations.”

Despite the tight bond between teammates, a series of tough decisions will have to be made in March when determining who will represent the Utes in the NCAA Championships.

“I can honestly say that for nearly every discipline that the competition to see who’s going to end up securing a championships spot will be exciting to watch unfold,” Sweeney said. “In the big picture, I’m happy with the depth, experience and leadership we have. This is a nice position to be in and it will be important for the staff to manage this well.”

Kevin Sweeney is entering the third season of his second stint as Director of Skiing at the University of Utah. He returned to lead the Utah program in September of 2010 and has led the Utes to back-to-back runner-up finishes at the NCAA Championships in 2011 and 2012.

In addition to its pair of second-place finishes at the national meet in 2011 and 2012, Utah won the NCAA West Regional/ Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association championship last season after finishing second in 2011. The Utes have been awarded the RMISA regular-season title each of the last two seasons as well.

Not only was Sweeney’s squad successful on the course during the 2012 season, but it also performed at a high level in academics, personal development and community service as evidenced by winning the Utah athletic department’s 2011-12 Utes Cup, the annual team-by-team competition that awards points for the following: academic and athletic performance, personal development (i.e. attending Life Skills events), community service, attendance at Crimson Games and SAAC/SAM participation.

Individually, Miles Havlick has been named Ski Racing Magazine’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year each of the last two seasons. Havlick claimed his first career national title in the men’s 20k classical race by 1.5 seconds over Montana State’s David Norris.

Maria Graefnings won her second career national title at the 2012 NCAA Championships by taking first place in the women’s 5k freestyle. She followed that with a seventh-place effort in the women’s 15k classical event. Graefnings earned Ski Racing Magazine’s Nordic Collegiate Skiers of the Year in 2011 and was was also recognized as Utah’s nomination for the Pac-12 Conference Woman of the Year. She was honored as the FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year and the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP.

Sweeney continues to build a solid reputation in the ranks of collegiate ski racing and now plans to carry on the Ute ski team’s tradition of excellence. As the leader of a program that is so rich in tradition and vying for the NCAA title each year, Sweeney emphasizes excellence in the classroom and on the racecourse. In eight seasons under Sweeney’s direction, the Utes experienced a great deal of national success. In addition to the school’s 11th NCAA title in 2003, the Utes have captured three NCAA runner-up finishes and three bronze medals while earning 18 NCAA individual championships, 41 All-American honors and four Olympians.

Sweeney is a two-time recipient of Utah’s prestigious Don Reddish Award (2003 and 2011), which is presented annually to the coach of a sport other than football, men’s and women’s basketball and gymnastics, who is deemed to have had the most successful season the previous year. Sweeney also chaired the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee and was also a member of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association’s Cross Country Skiing Committee He was also an assistant on the U.S. Ski Team coaching staff at the World Championships in Ramsau, Austria.

Abi Holt begins her fourth season as head Nordic coach for the University of Utah ski team.

Holt guided Utah’s Nordic squads to dominating seasons in 2011 and 2012 and helped the Utes to back-to-back second-place NCAA finishes, led by the top qualifiers for nordic on both the men’s and women’s side. For her efforts, Holt was named the 2011 RMISA Nordic Coach of the Year.

Two of Holt’s athletes earned several honors last season. Maria Graefnings won the NCAA 5k freestyle title and claimed second place in the 15k classical. Graefnings was also named Ski Racing Magazine’s Women’s Nordic Collegiate Skiers of the Year, FasterSkier.com 2011 Women’s Collegiate Skier of the Year as well as the RMISA’s Female Skier of the Year and the Women’s Nordic MVP. Miles Havlick was named Ski Racing Magazine’s Men’s Nordic Collegiate Skier of the Year and was an honorable mention selection for FasterSkier.com’s Men’s Collegiate Skier of the Year honor.

Holt comes to Utah from Hollyburn Ski Club in Vancouver, B.C., where she spent a year as the first-ever head coach for the club. She coached Hollyburn’s first four athletes that qualified for the National Championships and the first three athletes to be named to the B.C. Provincial Development Squad.

Prior to Hollyburn, Holt spent five years as the Assistant Nordic Program Director and Ski Coach at the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

Holt has been coaching for 13 years and has coached six U.S. National Junior Champions and three national champions. She coached four winters in Europe with the U.S. Ski Team at the J1 Scandinavian Championships, Scando Cup, Europa Cup and World Junior Championships. Holt has also spent time training athletes in Sweden, Norway and New Zealand.

“We have added new athletes to both the men’s and the women’s rosters this year, and these athletes have brought some great new energy to the team,” Holt said. “I’ve seen some fantastic interaction between the senior members of the team and the new group. They have all pushed one another to improve throughout the fall training season. I look forward to seeing what the upcoming racing season will bring for us.”

Holt, who hails from Sun Valley, Idaho, was a three-time national junior champion and a 17-time Junior All-American for the Sun Valley Nordic ski team. She was on the U.S. National Junior Development ski team for five years and spent four years racing at Dartmouth College, earning All-American honors for the Big Green in addition to being a two-time team captain.

Jaka Korencan begins his 13th season with the University of Utah ski team where he has served as Head Alpine Coach for the past eight years.

During his tenure, Korencan has driven the Ute alpine contingent to consistently be among the best in the country, delivering 21 All-American athletes, nine NCAA Championship Medals, and two NCAA champions.

Korencan has also guided numerous individual successes during his years as Head Alpine Coach. Eva Huckova was a six-time All-American and 2010 NCAA giant slalom champion. Tague Thorson, who finished the 2008 regular season as the top overall men’s alpine qualifier, became one of just a handful of alpine skiers (men or women) to reach the U.S. Ski Team as a collegiate skier. Utah alpine national champions during his 12-year tenure as a coach include Scott Veenis, Ben Thornhill, Jemej Bukovec, Petra Svet and Lina Johansson.

Korencan was named the RMISA’s Alpine Coach of the Year in 2012 after leading a consistently excellent Utah performance throughout the season that resulted in a first-place finish in the RMISA Regular-Season Alpine Team standings. The Utes accumulated 1,785 points in the combined Alpine events, which was 143 points ahead of runner-up Denver. The Ute women’s alpine skiers also took first place with 977 points, finishing 137 points ahead of Colorado. Utah’s men’s Alpine team finished in second among the RMISA Men’s Alpine leaders with 808 points.

Additionally, under Korencan’s guidance, the Ute alpine team has consistently delivered stellar academic results, achieving the highest average team GPA levels. Most recently, five alpine athletes were named ot the University of Utah’s Dean’s List for the 2012 spring semester (minimum 3.50 GPA with at least 12 graded credits), while 10 Utes were named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll (minimum 3.00 GPA).

“Student-athletes at the University of Utah are getting extraordinary support from the athletic department and the University itself,” he said. “The University provides student athletes an outstanding environment to develop their athleticism as well as gain a world class education. This team has a rich tradition of excellence, and I am extremely excited, motivated, and honored to lead this team to continued success.”

A native of Slovenia, Korencan earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sport Science from the University of Utah in 2004, and in 2007 he completed a master’s degree in Sport Psychology.

Will McDonald is beginning his third season on the Ute coaching staff. This is his first full-time coaching appointment after coaching ski racing during the summer for the last five years.

McDonald has an accomplished past in ski racing as he was the first American, along with Lindsey Vonn, to win a race at Topolin. They both took slalom titles. He also won two gold medals at the Whistler Cup in the slalom and the giant slalom. At age 18, McDonald was ranked in the top 15 in slalom for the U.S., before starting his collegiate racing career at the University of Utah in 2003. He qualified for the NCAA Championships three times before graduating in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science and Health.

He won his first FIS race at the age of 15, competing against college athletes, and was ranked No. 1 in the world for his age in slalom from age 14 to 16. The Aspen, Colo., native started skiing at the age of 3.

McDonald is now working toward a master’s degree in Environmental Science within the PMST program at the U. of U.

Utah Records At A Glance• Utah has 10 NCAA Championships, which ranks third all-time. The Utes also won an AIAW title in 1978, bringing their total to 11.

• Utah’s 66 individual national championships ranks third all-time.

• Marvin Melville won three individual titles in 1959 – downhill, slalom and Alpine. The three titles in one year ties for the most in NCAA history.

• Four Utes combined to win five individual titles in 1995, the NCAA record for most individual championships by one school in a season. Harvard Solbakken (10-km freestyle), Heidi Selnes (5-km freestyle and 15-km classical) Thomas Weman (20-km classical), and Christl Hager (giant slalom) all won titles for Utah that season.

• Christl Hager is the only three-time repeat champion in Utah history, which also ties the national record. She won the giant slalom in 1994, 1995 and 1997.
