A record 10,151 students passed through the halls of the University of South Dakota in 2010, including more than 7,200 undergraduates and 2,900 graduates. More than 80 percent of the school’s 419 faculty members have the highest degree in their fi eld, but a 17:1 student-faculty ratio gives a great education a personal touch. The renowned and driven students make South Dakota the best higher education institution in the state.

We aren’t the only ones to feel that way. South Dakota is one of the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review and its 2011 “Best Colleges” issue. The University of South Dakota is the only institution from the state named to this year’s prestigious list.

The University’s 274-acre tree-lined campus, manicured green lawns, sculptures and displays of seasonal fl owers create a lush park-like educational setting. All across campus, visitors will notice signifi cant campus improvement projects as South Dakota is investing more than $100 million in projects that have recently been completed or are currently under construction.

Residents and visitors to Vermillion have enjoyed the city’s warm and welcoming charm for 150 years. Today, more than 10,000 adventurers, farmers, manufacturers, professionals and scholars call Vermillion home. Downtown restaurants, movie theaters, cafes and specialty shops are all within walking distance of the campus. But if you’re up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls or Sioux City in less than an hour, Omaha in about two and Minneapolis in fi ve.

Leisure time has a place here, too. Choose your adventure...Kayak on the Missouri River or sail on Lewis & Clark Lake. Bike along the river or hike at Spirit Mound. Golf at The Bluff s or disc golf at Prentis Park. There are lots of things to do in Vermillion.

Success for South Dakota student-athletes is measured on the fi eld and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled, not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. Below are some outstanding accomplishments:

One of the fi nest competition and training facilities in the region, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves South Dakota’s 350 student-athletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Student-athletes at South Dakota are given support in all areas of their college experience. Coyote staff members trained in academic support, strength training, sports medicine and more work on a one-on-one basis with each student-athlete.

Coyote student-athletes enjoy giving back to the community, whether it is working on projects in the region through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), or volunteering to assist those in need, such as fl ood preparations (bottom, center).

South Dakota passion makes gameday on campus one of the best days in Vermillion. Everyone gets involved from the color guard to the dance squad and cheerleaders to the school band. Even the baton twirler catches the USD spirit.

Now entering its fourth year of its transition to NCAA Division I, South Dakota continues to achieve success. In the fi rst three years of the transition, the Coyotes have won eight conference titles, including sweeping the 2011 Great West Indoor Track and Field Championships (top and bottom). 2010-11 saw 88 South Dakota athletes earn all-conference honors, with two earning player of the year honors. This also included two coach of the year honors.

The 2011-12 season will mark South Dakota’s fi rst in the Summit League in all sports except football. Coyote swimming and diving paved the way into the league as an associate member from 2009-11.

The South Dakota women’s basketball program strives for excellence on and off the court to help Coyote student-athletes be their best.

1. Coaching Staff : A veteran, knowledgeable coaching staff with more than three decades of collegiate experience leads the way.

2. Strength/Conditioning/Facilities: South Dakota has a full-time strength and conditioning coach along with weight room and practice facilities to help student-athletes reach their full potential.

3. Academics: The U provides the tools for student-athletes to not only prosper on the fi eld of competition but also in the classroom.

4. Tradition: A program with fi ve conference titles that is closing in on the 600-win milestone continues to grow.

Fourth-year South Dakota women’s basketball coach Ryun Williams is in the midst of a highly successful coaching career:

--His 53 wins at USD are the second-most in school history for a coach in his/her fi rst three seasons.--Career record of 288-170 in 16 seasons as collegiate head coach, an average of 18 wins per season. --USD is 35-9 (.795) the DakotaDome under Williams.--USD teams each earned WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll awards in Williams’ fi rst three seasons.

The Coyotes made history in 2010-11, as they earned their fi rst-ever postseason berth as a Division I program when they qualifi ed for the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament. The Coyotes not only made their fi rst postseason appearance as a Division I team -- they also earned their fi rst-ever Division I postseason win with a 62-47 victory over Idaho at the DakotaDome on March 17, 2011, to advance to the second round of the WBI, where they faced Cal State-Bakersfi eld.

Student-athletes, and specifi cally basketball, have facilities designed for them. The Coyotes have a private practice facility and hours of the weight room just to themselves. Several improvements have recently been made to the DakotaDome, including a new videoboard.

South Dakota’s Athletic Academic Service’s mission is to provide student-athletes with the support necessary to reach their full academic potential. The university provides each student-athlete with a full-time Athletic Academic Advisor who coordinates the following and more for each of their assignees:

The South Dakota women’s basketball program places an emphasis on academics, and the eff orts of the student-athletes are evident:--South Dakota was named to Women’s Basketball

Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25 Team Honor

Roll in both 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.--The Coyote women fi nished with a team GPA of 3.311 in 2008-09, a GPA of 3.381 in 2009-10 and a GPA of 3.390 in 2010-11.--Had 18 student-athletes earn Great West Academic

The South Dakota basketball teams are supported loyally by their fans (pictured below) throughout the season, including the student section known as the “Coyote Crazies,” pictured above, where students clad in red cheer on their Yotes. The fans create a great homecourt advantage for USD, which is 308-139 (.689) all-time at the DakotaDome.

The Summit League is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2011-12, and the 10-team league is as strong as ever. League members include South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts, Southern Utah, Oral Roberts, Missouri-Kansas City, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne and Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis.

The Ultimate Goal - Graduation

Student-athletes at South Dakota are students fi rst -- and their ultimate goal is to obtain their degree when they complete their time at the university. It’s an emphasis starting from the university’s administration that carries down to the Coyote coaching staff .
