President’s Message

Dear Members, Sparky Anderson was the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, and later the Detroit Tigers baseball teams. He was arguably the most successful Major League manager of the 1980s and 1990s, and highly sought—after for his sage advice. Even after he retired. One day, long after he was no longer managing baseball, he was volunteering at a community event when a reporter stopped him and asked, “What’s the most important lesson you learned during your long career in baseball?” Without hesitating Sparky responded, “Be nice.” Taken aback, the reported asked, “What?” Sparky continued—“Be nice. It doesn’t cost a nickel, and it’s worth a million dollars to those on the receiving end.” So what does that have to do with Boston terriers? It’s how it applies to us as exhibitors and fellow members of the Boston Terrier Club of America. Sparky was a fierce competitor, like many of us. But he always took time for others, and treated everyone with respect. Take the time to welcome new people. Take the time to congratulate others. If you can, gather around the group ring and give encouragement to our breed representative. Support one another. If you are at a show with obedience and/or agility trials, try to make it over to cheer on those amazing Boston terrier athletes. And give all those junior showmen the support they deserve. We are an organization of over 500 members, from every conceivable background, from all over the U.S. and several countries around the world. But we have one important thing in common —the betterment and promotion of Boston terriers. That’s more than I have in common with the neighbor next door, and more than I have in common with the majority of my co-workers. We speak the same language (dog, bitch, A.I., frozen semen,

commercial or home-made dog food(?), firm stools, bad front, nice rear, look at that top line, etc). Celebrate our commonalities, without concentrating on our differences. Together, we are in a position to make some positive changes. It’s going to be a great year, if we all work in unison. At a time when entry fees are going up and gas prices are raising, here’s a real bargain—be nice—it’s FREE.

From the Editor I’ve had the unique opportunity to show dogs almost every weekend in 2011. With this opportunity came sacrifices, the Coast to Coast one of them. I regret to inform you that this will be my last issue, for now, as editor of the Coast to Coast. Jennifer Kurts will be taking over as editor and I’ll help her as much as I can. She’s going to try to keep it a similar format, but there are still a lot of details to iron out. I wish everyone good luck in 2012, in the whelping box, in the show ring or simply cuddled on the couch with your Boston.

COLOpHOnThe Coast to Coast is produced with the Adobe

Creative Suite on Macintosh computers.

Body text is set in Adobe Caslon pro and Myriad pro. Adobe

Caslon is based on the type designs of William Caslon, circa

1725. These in turn had been influenced by the Dutch types of

the late seventeenth century. Although old style in nature they

have less stress than some of the earlier faces of the genre. The

Adobe Caslon font family was based on specimen pages printed

by Caslon between 1734 and 1770. Myriad was designed by

Carol Twombly and Robert Slimbach in 1992.

The display faces are Fling and Kursivschrift. Fling is a fanciful

typeface was designed by resident Letraset designer Michael

Gills and is based on the famous French Ronde script. Created

entirely on screen, Fling has a precise, clinical appearance. The

capitals are for initialling purposes only and support a lowercase

that is rich in alternative and ligatured letterforms. Also included

is a host of attractive embellishment devices. Kursivschrift is

by designer German Cartographic Design and published by

Linotype.

The Coast to Coast is printed at Badger press in Fort Atkin-

son, WI on a Heidelberg MOZp-2 Color perfector Offset.

President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 4:11 p.m. (PST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix via conference call, Dane LaJoye, Mar-by Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Ja-mie Allen, Sharon Stoll, and Fred Comstock. Absent were Brook Berth and Linda Jett.Roll Call – BradleyBoard ReportsPresident - No report.Vice President - No report.Treasurer – Nix joined the meeting via confer-ence call. He stated he submitted his report and has not received payment for several Futurity entries and COAST to COAST advertisements. It was a Board approved policy at the October 19, 2010 meeting; checks were to be mailed to Nix on a bi-monthly basis. Nix also reminded the Board to submit any ex-penses on the club approved expense report. Due to the Board not being able to hear Nix, the Board requested he forward his report to Allen and Comstock. Nix left the meeting 4:24 p.m. (PST) Concern was voiced on the COAST to COAST distribution not meeting timelines as it is a quarterly newsletter. It was felt membership has come to expect this mailing and it is a large part of why many pay dues. Allen suggested re-viewing other options such as increased assis-tance (possibly an assistant editor) to maintain the timelines. Berth might be overburdened and not able to distribute the COAST to COAST timely and thus not meeting commitments agreed upon. It is a common belief that Berth’s efforts and creative talents in producing the COAST to COAST are outstanding and being a volunteer, the dilemma is maintaining quality while upholding the responsibility of produc-ing the COAST to COAST and delivering it to the membership quarterly. Membership dues were raised to produce this publication and cur-rently, this obligation is not being met. Fletch-er stressed how every committee is under the Board’s discretion, and the COAST to COAST is

one such committee. Therefore, assistance needs to be found or the project relinquished to an-other member. Further discussion tabled until another meeting when Berth can be present. Comstock suggested meeting before the Annu-al meeting, with LaJoye offering having a single topic meeting take place in his suite the evening of April 12, 2011. From Nix’s comments, Comstock made a motion that no services should be provided without payment/funds received (ads in the COAST to COAST and donations for example) by the BTCA. Seconded by Fletcher, motion approved unanimously. Discussion on providing reimbursement to Ken Roux for Futurity receipts on his expenses. Nix claimed Roux’s request was not submit-ted properly; however it was felt Roux should be paid. Allen made a motion to reimburse Ken Roux for his expenses of $249.88 from 2010 Futurity. Seconded by Bradley, motion approved unanimously.

Recording Secretary - Comstock made a mo-tion to approve the March 15, 2011 special meet-ing minutes, Blackwood seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Bradley will read the sealed results of the election ballot at the Annual meeting Thurs-day, April 14, 2011, and will ask for approval of the Annual minutes from 2010.

Corresponding Secretary - No report. Sugges-tion to have a brief meeting after the Annual meeting to vote on new member applications. The Board agreed to this meeting.

Delegate Report – Kelly has a Meet the Breed application which needs to be deliv-ered to Carl Gomes. Kelly also showed Board members, a photo AKC was slated to use as an example of the Boston breed, yet it was thought not to be a very good representation. She would like to offer a better example to be used than the one provided.

Proposal for a new BTCA Performance Newsletter – LaJoye suggested instead of an entire newsletter, the BTCA des-ignate a couple of pages for Junior and Performance in the COAST to COAST each month. Information printed would be provided to the Editor by club mem-bers. LaJoye made a motion to allocate two pages (one for Junior Showman-ship and one for Performance Bostons) in every issue of the COAST to COAST. Comstock seconded, motion approved unanimously. Fletcher to contact Maria Urso to let her know the outcome of the Board Decision.

Grand Champion Recognition Award – LaJoye explained the recent inter-est in offering members a medallion for earning Grand Champion status, much like the existing award for earn-ing a regular championship. Blackwood suggested the awards bestowed upon the winners of this title be retroactive. The Board supported this idea. Motion from Blackwood to have a Recognition Award/medallion to those dogs AKC has determined to have achieved Grand Champion status, and to include win-ners retroactively. Allen seconded, mo-tion approved unanimously. Constant Contact E-mail System – this system of contacting membership via e-mail for updates in a quick and ef-ficient manner has worked well. LaJoye suggested this service should remain a responsibility of the Corresponding Secretary. The system can be transferred and has a monthly $15 charge. Com-stock made a motion for the BTCA to

continue using the Constant Contact E-mail system. Fletcher seconded, motion passed unanimously.

New Business

Report from Policy & Procedure Committee – Fletcher and Comstock distributed an informational packet to the Board, and reported they have re-searched past Meeting Minutes and provided the Board with a breakdown from 2008 of the policies which have been adopted. They will hopefully re-trieve additional policy and procedures by contacting Deane Jones to view archived information dating back to 1985. They have not yet been placed on the BTCA website, but this is the eventual goal much like how AKC has a similar page. Also provided in the packet was a list of National show sites since 1985 and a U.S. map of the five regions in the annual rotation.

Role of Liaisons – the role was de-signed so there are boundaries to the communication between committees and the Board. Yet due to the fact a li-aison has to be a Board member, Kelly stated how a common perception is the Board controls too many aspects within the BTCA. She felt liaisons shouldn’t have to necessarily be members of the Board. General discussion of the pros and cons of this idea and it was felt a policy needs to be put in place. It was mentioned how critical it is to encourage and reinforce members to be active and involved with club activi-ties. Comstock made a motion moving

forward, liaisons to committees do not have to be members of the Board but would still report to the Board on com-mittee activities. Seconded by Black-wood, motion passed unanimously.

E-mail Notification – Meetings & Approval of Minutes – Comstock pre-sented AKC documents stating e-mail communications can not be conducted without signing a release/agreement form for e-mail notifications. This should be added as a new policy for the club. Fletcher motioned e-mail notifica-tion releases be signed by Board mem-bers in accordance to AKC policy, for the approval of minutes and notifica-tions, seconded by Stoll. Motion passed unanimously. Fletcher will retain copies of the Board signed releases.

Future Show Chairs – Fletcher made a proposal the Show Chair for the Na-tional be a local member of the club, ideally living where the show is locat-ed. This would save on travel expenses, eliminate the need for an assistant chair, and be easier to facilitate when working with local hotels/vendors. Marcia Terry for example, should be the next National Show Chair since it will be located in Houston. She will mentor with LaJoye. Carol Upthegrove was previously thought to handle this role, but it was believed Terry would be a preferred choice with this new focus. Fletcher made a motion to have Marcia Terry act at the National Show Chair for 2012, seconded by Allen. Motion approved unanimously. LaJoye to contact each person regarding this Board decision.

4-11 Board minutes.indd 2 1/2/12 7:18:51 PM

Future Show Sites - LaJoye reported the rotation for 2013 would be in the Mid-West. Chicago would like to bid to host the National and is currently looking for appropriate hotels. At the Affiliate club meeting, it should be communicated the Chicago club is interested and another club could also assist and mentor if nec-essary. Allen suggested considering hav-ing a smaller club host one of the shows before the National, to learn the tools and skills needed in eventually hosting a National. LaJoye thought a “How To” guide with instructions and timelines for putting on a National could be created, and offered to work on this type of proj-ect. A letter will be sent to the six clubs eligible to host a National (Minnesota, Hawkeye, Wisconsin, Detroit, Kentucky, and Cincinnati) in the selected Region.

Judges - 2012-2013 – Dr. Harry Smith will be judging the National in 2012 and Ken Roux will be judging in 2013. Allen thought it would be a good ges-ture to offer the membership a choice in Sweepstakes judges for 2013. Fletch-er thought mentioning to members in the COAST to COAST would be a vi-able option.

Report Communications Committee – Comstock has been working with Georgeann Mathis in looking at other club’s handling of password protected pages on websites and investigating the possible liability of hosting a “chat list”. LaJoye asked about communication via other social networks such as Twitter, and it was thought this would be acceptable. Also the possible vulnerability of the Board being sued without special

insurance protection needs to be investigated. Comstock will report his findings at the next Board Meeting.

Photo Contest in conjunction with Meet the Breed – Short discussion from a previous meeting on having a photo contest with the Meet the Breed booth at the next Eukanuba show in Florida. This project had been success-fully done under Lisa LaMere in the past, and would have co-chairs Carol Upthegrove and Linda Taylor to assist in 2011. Motion made by Fletcher to have the photo contest in conjunction with the Meet the Breed this year in Florida, seconded by Bradley. Motion passed unanimously.

Letter from Sherry Patton – Fletcher to speak with Berth regarding a replace-ment copy of the COAST to COAST for Sherry Patton and to also address her suggestion for a feature on Juniors. Fletcher to let her know the Board’s decision to include a page in future edi-tions of the COAST to COAST.

Website Information Members Only - Melany Anaya is the Website com-mittee chair and works with a contract-ed vendor. A proposal is to eventually have the membership roster, meeting minutes, and club business password protected on the website. The Roster would be especially helpful as there were errors in the printed copy sent to the membership, but if on the website, members could request changes imme-diately. Additionally, website links and kennel names could be included as well. Comstock thought individual pass-

words would be the best course of ac-tion to ensure due diligence of privacy to club business. In time, offering the paying of membership dues via PayPal would also be a positive addition to the website. Allen to discuss with Anaya if the vendor can make these various ad-ditions/changes.

Open Discussion - Allen inquired re-garding the rules of a three time Per-petual Trophy winner, required to have the same ownership names on all the dogs. Her thoughts were the honor should be bestowed upon the right-ful winner without having the owner-ship restriction, feels the current rule is excessive, and precludes people who honestly deserve the trophy. Comstock provided the reasoning that people could fund being a co-owner on many dogs without stepping into a ring or working with any Boston. Kelly also of-fered how the current Perpetual Trophy awards were established with outlined rules many years ago and the eligibil-ity to win the trophy is not negotiable. In the future, challenge trophies may be offered instead. Further discussion on awarding trophies to those winning three times regardless of similar owners listed on the dog, can be continued at that time. A motion was made by Comstock to recess until Tuesday, April 12, 2011, for a short meeting regarding the COAST to COAST. Seconded by Bradley. Meet-ing concluded at 6:52 p.m. (PST).

Respectfully submitted,Lynda Bradley

(PST).

PAge noThe Board meeting convened on Tuesday April 12, 2011 for the second part of the April 10, 2011 meeting. Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Dane LaJoye, Maureen Blackwood, Jamie Allen, Brook Berth, Sharon Stoll, and Fred Comstock . Absent were Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Richard Nix, and Linda Jett.

Discussion regarding COAST to COAST – Discussion began by Comstock regarding solu-tions for the COAST to COAST to be distributed timely, completely, and to meet club obligations. One suggestion by Berth was splitting newslet-ters between two smaller and two larger versions. The smaller issues would be the responsibility of another individual and would contain meet-ing minutes and general club information. Berth would continue distributing the larger newslet-ters. Berth stated the COAST to COAST will be ready for distribution soon after the National and will be a larger issue, along with the July is-sue being sent at the start of the fiscal year. That issue will include information and photos from the National. Berth suggested Carolyn Garmon who has been assisting with advertisements; help with the small-er issues since she can use the same software. Berth to ask Garmon if she would be willing to take over the smaller issues of the COAST to COAST. It was reminded by Fletcher, of the recent Board decision all advertisements and trophy do-

nation payments need to be received before pub-lishing in the COAST to COAST. With Jennifer Duffy helping intake and post checks, this will be a workable policy moving forward. Suggestion by Comstock that information/club business be located in the front of the mag-azine, with all else in the rear. All present agreed to the format. Allen to send copy of Nix’s e-mail with his statements regarding members who did not pay for advertisements to Berth. Comstock made a motion to have four edi-tions a year of the COAST to COAST: two larger issues (one in July and the edition with the show packet) and two smaller issues (fall and spring) with all publishing and distribution deadlines met. Roll call vote: Ola Jeanne McCollough - yes, Joyce Fletcher - yes, Lynda Bradley - yes, Dane LaJoye - yes, Maureen Blackwood - yes, Jamie Allen - no, Brook Berth - yes, Sharon Stoll - yes, and Fred Comstock - yes. Motion passed by majority vote. The meeting was called to recess by Fletcher, seconded by Bradley until the next scheduled meeting to take place Thursday, April 14, 2011 after the BTCA Annual Meeting. Meeting re-cessed at 7:52 p.m. (PST).

back to 1985, along with past winners of Nationals. Also to be posted will be a list of all past National locations since 1985 and a map of the U.S. regions eli-gible to hold BTCA Nationals.

Report on the 2012 National – With a competitive bid, the 2012 National was awarded to Houston, Texas to be held at the Crown Plaza, May 7 – 11th. Perfor-mance will be held off-site with an obe-dience trial and two agility runs again. Every attempt will be made to find an enclosed building or area with a cover. Dr. Harry Smith accepted his judging assignment and the contract is expected to be returned within 3 weeks. A question from Chad Howard on the procedure if a replacement judge is needed in the event Dr. Smith is un-available to complete his assignment. The judge slated for 2013 is Ken Roux and his being the 2012 replacement will be offered, but not automatic or bind-ing. The judges’ selection committee will be meeting later this year to select judges for 2014, 2015, and 2016. After general discussion, it was decided if the 2012 judge cannot accept or fails to make his commitment; the selection committee will become involved to re-solve the situation.

Recognition – Fletcher wanted to rec-ognize Susan Krouse for her tremen-dous hard work as host club chairman, Dane LaJoye for his tireless efforts as Show Chairman for the BTCA, Ola Jeanne McCollough for her past 4 years work as President, Marby Kelly for her great job announcing at the National , and Lynda Bradley for her role as Re-cording Secretary for the club.

2011 National Show Recognition & Report – As his last year as Show Chairman, LaJoye wanted to take the opportunity to give thanks to: Susan

Krouse - host club chairman, Carol Upthegrove - Assistant Show Chair, all the committee chairs: Joyce Fletcher, Connie McCord, Cindy Adams – Ven-dor Chair, Kim Rutherford, Brook Berth – graphics, Clarice Dean – Si-lent Auction, Deanna Jones and Don VanAvery – Perpetual Trophies, Pat McCann – Chief Ring Steward, Cindy Pagurski – Ways N-Means/Rescue, and Jason Shukhart – videos, music, and support. LaJoye said he appreciated everyone’s efforts and without the in-credible members in the club, generous donations of items for raffle and time, this show would not have been as tre-mendously successful.

Open Forum – Joyce Davis – inquired if the BTCA would be offering awards for Grand Championships. Fletcher announced the motion was passed by the Board to offer Grand Champion awards accord-ing to AKC, retroactive to when the awards were first given.Kelly Estes – wanted the membership to realize the Futurity committee is busy working to rectify separating ac-counts between Futurity and the Futu-rity Challenge.Sandy Crook – introduced herself and complimented the great show this year. She especially liked having Boston competitions under one roof, showing people their true diversity and what they can do with soundness being her main concern. With regards to issues of backs and hips, X-rays she felt are es-sential to know health challenges the breed might be passing onto the next generation. She also wanted to encour-age the Health certificate program and Health Committee to emphasize soundness and structure for the overall lasting health of the dog.Sherry Patton – she is returning to show-ing and is thrilled by the Board decision

to have a Juniors page in the COAST to COAST. She thinks this is a great idea to support and showcase junior showman-ship and performance Bostons. She also urged people to contact her as their ef-forts are to link Juniors throughout the county for education and support.Lisa LaMere – reported on the com-mittee and experience with the Meet the Breed booth these past four years. She wanted to recognize the special people who assisted and made the proj-ect happen: Janet Christman, Char-lie and Garlus Gerson, Cindy Adams, Blair Barrett, Dan Siberson, and Joyce Fletcher. Last year had a fantastic and popular campaign of the Boston Coun-ty Fair Kissing Booth - giving stickers to the public saying “I was Kissed by a Boston Terrier and I liked it”. This ex-hibit garnered 2nd place in the Non-Sporting category at the 2010 Eukanu-ba Dog show in Long Beach. Next year it is to be located in Florida.Sonya Baird – member of the health committee and in charge of the 2010 Health Survey. She reminded the group of the importance in complet-ing the on-line Health Survey on the incidences of hip, patella, cataracts, etc, which tells the committee which is-sues owners are experiencing with their dogs, leads the committee where to fo-cus, and is an accurate way of identify-ing emerging health issues in the breed. This information gathered can shape the direction of future research, and is completely confidential. Printed forms can be requested and/or Baird will as-sist with the completion of the survey if needed. McCollough asked for motion to adjourn, made by Joyce Davis, and seconded by John Kelly. President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:06 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Mar-by Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Jamie Allen, Brook Berth, Sharon Stoll, and Fred Comstock. Absent was Linda Jett. Roll Call – Bradley

Corresponding Secretary Position to fill re-maining 1 year term – Comstock began the dis-cussion by explaining he thought an appropriate candidate would be Janet Harner. He has worked with her previously and felt she has a good grasp of BTCA Bylaws and working with AKC. Allen suggested also discussing other candidates who might be interested in the position. Blackwood offered that Jennifer Duffy forwarded her re-sume to the Board requesting consideration. Comstock presented Harner was a commit-tee chair assisting the Bylaws steering project in 1990, is an AKC delegate, attorney, federal judge, and served as the show chair for the West-ern Washington Specialty. He felt she has more experience than other possible candidates and could start working as Corresponding Secretary immediately upon starting the term.It was also felt however, that Duffy had run for the office of Treasurer previously, has been assist-ing Berth with record keeping of the COAST to COAST, and has repeatedly expressed interest in volunteering her time to the BTCA. Comstock made a motion Harner take the Corresponding Secretary position for the re-maining term of one year. Seconded by Fletcher. Roll Call vote called: Joyce Fletcher - yes, Lynda Bradley - no, Richard Nix - yes, Dane LaJoye - yes, Maureen Blackwood - no, Jamie Allen - no, Brook Berth - no, Sharon Stoll – yes, and Fred Comstock - yes. Motion carried.

Request for reimbursement from Carol Up-thegrove for expenses incurred in Reno, NV for the National Specialty – LaJoye reported he received a letter and receipts from Upthegrove. Fletcher requested LaJoye read the letter, in which Upthgrove expressed her disappointment from not being utilized as her understanding was she was to be mentored as Assistant Show Chairman, and is requesting a reimbursement of $1228.82 for airfare, lost wages, and food.

Background discussion: LaJoye e-mailed Upthegrove a month prior to the show and asked if she was planning on attending due to the need to reserve a hotel room. Five complimentary suites were provided to the BTCA (most used for judges) and one was given to Upthegrove for six nights. It was also stated by the Board, how help-ing as Assistant Show Chair was not a guarantee the person would graduate to Show Chairman. LaJoye explained as he did in a previous Board meeting - he did not delegate as much as he could have, yet Upthegrove also did not contact LaJoye to inquire on helping with the event and he felt no initiative was taken. LaJoye doubted Upthe-grove had the necessary skills to completely run a National Specialty of this size. Blackwood offered that according to previous meeting minutes from August 2008, the Assistant Show Chair is to be provided with four nights of accommodations, which Upthegrove was. Nothing further is mentioned regarding compensation. Allen made a motion to pay for all of Upthe-grove’s submitted expenses totaling $1228.82. No second was voiced, so the motion failed. Al-len then made a motion for the BTCA to pay only for Upthegrove’s airfare expense to the Na-tional Specialty totaling $470. Bradley seconded. Further discussion took place. Comstock stated how this compensation could lead to a pattern of volunteers requesting reimbursement for work performed, which otherwise would have been volunteered. Fletcher commented how other par-ticipants at the Specialty (Carl Gomes, for exam-ple) are not reimbursed for any expenses, and she felt the club had given Upthegrove the required number of room nights as set forth in the min-utes. A Roll Call vote was taken: Joyce Fletcher - no, Lynda Bradley - no, Richard Nix - no, Dane LaJoye - no, Maureen Blackwood - no, Jamie Al-len - no, Brook Berth - no, Sharon Stoll – no, and Fred Comstock - no. Motion defeated. LaJoye to write a letter to Upthegrove stat-ing the Board has agreed to compensate what is required as stated in the Approved minutes from August 2008: 4 night’s hotel lodging A motion was made by LaJoye to adjourn, seconded by Nix. Meeting adjourned at 8:46 p.m. (EST).

Meeting ad-journed at 8:45 p.m. (PST).

(EST).

Pres-ent were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Mau-reen Blackwood, Jamie Allen, Brooke Berth, Sha-ron Stoll, and Fred Comstock . Absent were Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate) and Linda Jett. Replacement of Coast to Coast Editor – Ex-tensive discussion concerning recent issues sur-rounding the C2C namely: number of issues distributed per year, ads not paid for before pub-lication, and the late mailing of the May issue with time sensitive information needing to be sent to the membership within 30 days of the Annual Meeting. Dialog as to whether or not to continue with the C2C current format - moving back to a newsletter publication. Fletcher felt the C2C has become too time consuming for a vol-unteer position, and impossible to maintain and/or transfer to another person in the future. Conversation on the replacement of the cur-rent Editor of the C2C took place. Input from Berth was provided to the Board - if she wants to continue her role and the plan she has for im-provements. With additional assistance, Berth feels she can continue with a new format for the C2C. Fletcher felt publishing the C2C elec-tronically could be a viable option. Allen stated without alternatives to whom would take over the C2C project, Berth should remain Editor. Blackwood clarified no one on the Board had further suggestions of anyone else taking over in this role, and without someone available and willing to step in, Blackwood also felt Berth should continue. Motion by Allen to keep Berth as Editor of the C2C, seconded by Berth. Roll call vote: Joyce Fletcher - no, Lynda Bradley - yes, Richard Nix – no, Dane LaJoye - no, Maureen Blackwood - yes, Jamie Allen - yes, Brook Berth - yes, Sha-ron Stoll - yes, and Fred Comstock - no. Motion passed by majority vote, yet McCollough exer-cised her option to vote – no. This made the vote a tie and therefore failed. Fletcher made a motion to table the discus-sion on replacement of C2C Editor until the first board meeting of the year in July, seconded by LaJoye. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m. (EST).

President – LaJoye stated that he was show chair when Dr. Harry Smith was contacted to judge the 2012 National Specialty and he has remained as the contact person for Smith. Smith has signed a contract but notified LaJoye that he has a self-imposed restriction of judging only 120 dogs per day. LaJoye let Smith know that the entry will almost certainly be more than 120 dogs per day, especially on Thursday with Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. LaJoye asked Smith which class-es he would like to judge if there is a need to hire a second judge to fulfill the remainder of the as-signment. Smith prefers to judge Winners Bitch, Junior Showmanship, and Best of Breed with a second judge, if required by the entry numbers, judging Winners Dog on Thursday and non-regular classes on Friday. After discussion of the best way to proceed, a motion was made by Allen to ask the Judges’ Selection Committee to make a recommendation as to how to proceed in regard to Smith’s limitations and to suggest three other judges to fill the remainder of his assignment if we go ahead with Smith as the judge. Howard seconded and the motion passed on unanimous voice vote.

Vice-President – Fletcher needs Howard’s signed consent to do BTCA Board business via e-mail. Howard had thought the form received was for notification purposes only and will send

the signed consent form immediately.

Recording Secretary – No report.

Corresponding Secretary – No report.

Treasurer – LaJoye said that closing out the books, especially deciphering the bill from the hotel in Reno, is a yeoman’s task. LaJoye thanked and commended Nix for his diligent work. Nix reported fund balances as of June 30, 2011 as follows: Boston Terrier of the Year $1,458.19, Futurity Activity $5,236.76, Futurity Challenge Award $3,673.63, General Funds $61,546.30, Health Committee $23,451.91, Perpetual Tro-phy $5,547.23, and Rescue $5,597.25 for a total of $106,511.27 in the BTCA account. As of this meeting 95 members have not paid their dues. The board needs to decide whether to extend the deadline, as allowed by the Constitu-tion and By-laws, to September 30. LaJoye read from the Constitution and By-laws that dues are payable on July 1 of each year and that mem-bership will be dropped if dues are not received within 90 days. If the board decided to offer an extension it would be a 90 day extension after September 30. LaJoye will send an e-mail asking members to be sure to pay their dues. Nix said that many of the non-renewals are from couples or families that had multiple paid memberships in the past and are only paying a single member-ship this year and most of the foreign members have not renewed. Fletcher asked about the return deposit items on the bank summary statement and whether the party whose check was returned then pays the return fees. Nix said that yes the people are re-quired to pay, by money order, the fees in addition to the original amount due. Nix asked that Terry, as show chair, be sure to send all checks to him every two weeks or at the least every month so that people know their checks have been received and they do not stop payment on the checks. All checks need to be made to BTCA and not to individual members as the banks will not accept

the checks for deposit to the BTCA ac-count if they are made out to individual members. Nix also noted that the Boston Terrier Club of Miami is no longer in existence. Nix received an individ-ual’s membership with a note that as of about three weeks ago the Miami club has disbanded. Howard said that an offer of help had been extended to the Miami club but they had declined. LaJoye asked Harner to send a letter to the Corresponding Secretary of the Miami club to inquire about their sta-tus.

Special Report on 2012 National Specialty

Terry listed the committee chairs as follows: Assistant Show Chair – Ce-clia Crouchet, Assistant Show Chair for Obedience, Rally, and Agility – Kelly Misegadis, On-site Show Secre-tary – Marby Kelly, Chief Ring Stew-ard – Pat McCann, Vendor – Cindy Adams, Trophies – Jason Shuckhart, Hospitality and Banquet – Jamie Al-len, Catalog Advertisements – Carolyn Garman assisted by Peggy Jackson, Si-lent Auction – Barbara Naas, Ways and Means – Cindy Pagurski, Catalog Sales – Ruth Lieberg, 50/50 Raffle – Mar-garet Noble, Grounds – Linda Martin, Room Sharing – Bennie Byrd. The RV Parking Chair is not confirmed yet but Sue LeCalsey has been contacted. The videographer will be Dog Show Video Pros (Irv Krukencamp) and the photographer will be Jennifer Kurts. Allen inquired as to whether The Win-

ning Image had been contacted as pho-tographer. Terry said that they have a contractual requirement that photos be done after every class which would take too long. Allen suggested asking them to delete that requirement; Terry and LaJoye said that they have asked for that in the past and it has been denied. LaJoye stated that the decision rests with the show chair and that decision has been made. Kelly inquired as to whether Moss Bow (MB-F) would be there again as on-site show secretary; Terry replied that they would not as this year’s super-intendent will be Onofrio. Kelly asked for the cost of having MB-F on-site; LaJoye said it was a bit over $2,000.00, which in hindsight was not worth the money as the only advantage is that they posted results instantaneously. Harner asked whether Onofrio will post results on their website; Terry said that she will have to check with Onof-rio on that. Kelly asked if there was a reason that Onofrio was selected rather than MB-F. Terry said that in the past they have been cheaper and they are the main superintendent in the Hous-ton area. Kelly asked if price quotes had been requested from both Onofrio and MB-F; Terry said that she had not but can do that as we are not yet committed to Onofrio. Allen asked if there is a way to get multiple rosettes for dogs with multiple owners and are entered in the Parade of Champions if the owners are willing to pay an additional fee in order to re-ceive a rosette for each owner. Terry will check into doing this.Terry left the meeting at 9:00 p.m. EDT.

New Business

New Year, New Rules – LaJoye asked that all board members be familiar with Robert’s Rules of Order so that meetings go smoothly. A discussion of whether board members may partici-pate in online chat groups was tabled until the existing written board policy can be found. BTCA Goals for the New Fiscal Year – LaJoye asked that goals be set in order to measure progress. Goals suggested were: (1) LaJoye – improve communication between the Board and club members through use of the Constant Contact, prompt response when contacted by club members with questions or concerns, posting of Board minutes as soon as approved and incor-poration of more information on the website; (2) LaJoye – offer assistance to affiliate clubs by supporting the new affiliate club chairs in their efforts to improve communication and assistance to the club; Kelly suggested encourag-ing regional cooperation among the clubs; (3) LaJoye – put performance events and competitors more on the same footing as conformation events and be more inclusive in general, in-cluding to people who are pet own-ers who do not compete but wish to support the breed; (4) Fletcher – give more attention and encouragement to our Junior Showmanship competitors, including emphasizing the importance of observing juniors competitions at shows; (5) Fletcher – include more in-formation on the BTCA website and encourage members to use the website more; (6) Blackwood – find ways to include new members in club opera-tions, the national specialty, and other roles as many want to help but do not

8-9 Board Minutes.indd 2 1/1/12 7:58:12 PM

know where the help is needed; LaJoye suggested revising the membership ap-plication to facilitate this. LaJoye asked board members to consider whether other goals should be added at the next meeting.

Information on the BTCA Website – Allen commended Melany Anaya on the good job she has done with the web-site. Suggested additions to the website include much of the information that is now in the Coast to Coast, an updated affiliate club list with information about their specialty shows and other events, Award of Merit information, Boston of the Year information including all rules for the event and a listing of the participants (not just those eligible) for each year including the judges and win-ner for each year. Comstock suggested ways to include all or part of the Coast to Coast in the members only section, not as a substitute for the printed ver-sion but in addition to it. Other addi-tions to the members only area can be made as well.

BTCA Committee Chairs for 2011-12 – LaJoye announced committee chairs and board liaisons as follows: Af-filiate Clubs – Venita Prater and Cece-lia Crouchet (Board), Awards – Janet Harner (Harner), Breeder Referral – Billie Bunch (Stoll), Boston Terrier of the Year – Ken Roux (Howard), Con-stitution and By-laws – Joyce Fletcher (Board), Continuing Education – Mau-reen Blackwood (Blackwood), Futurity – Ken Roux (Howard), Gazette Colum-nist – Patricia Johnson (Board), Health – Mary Miller (Blackwood), Judges Education – Carl Gomes (Kelly), Meet the Breeds – Linda Taylor (Fletcher), Membership – Charlotte Comstock

(Fletcher), National Specialty – Mar-cia Terry (Board), Newsletter/Coast to Coast – Brook Berth (Allen), Rescue – Cindy Pagurski (Berth), Ways and Means – Cindy Pagurski (Board), Web-site – Melany Anaya (Allen). Appoint-ment of Junior Showmanship chair was tabled until the October board meeting so that candidates may be contacted.

Nominating Committee – The nomi-nating committee must be formed no later than November 1, 2011. The board nominates a chair who then se-lects two members and two alternates. LaJoye nominated Fletcher as chair. Allen nominated Blackwood. Howard made a motion, seconded by Stoll, that Joyce Fletcher be appointed chair of the nominating committee with consider-ation to Blackwood as a member of the committee. Allen questioned whether any action other than appointment of the chair by the board is allowed by the club constitution. The vote was called and carried with Allen in dissent.

Lifetime Membership Nomination – Fletcher made a motion that the board nominate Richard and Betty Nix as lifetime members pending approval at the next general meeting. The motion was seconded by Comstock and carried on unanimous voice vote.

Selection of Sweepstakes Judge for 2012 National – Tabled until October to allow board members to come up with nominees.

Nix left the meeting at 9:50 p.m. EDT.

New Member Applications – Harner sent copies of the applications and a bal-lot for election of five applicants. There

are five applicants all of whom have at least two references and have signed the Code of Ethics. The applicants are: Pa-tricia Canipe, Wendy Gardino, Savanna Hartwig, Vicki Helgenberg, and Grace Quinlan. Board members are asked to mail the ballots in immediately.

Fletcher left the meeting at 9:47 p.m. EDT.

2013 National Specialty Show Site – Allen asked when the board would de-cide the location of the 2013 national. LaJoye said that this is an agenda item for the October board meeting. Allen asked if eligible affiliate clubs have been contacted about hosting for both 2013 and 2014. LaJoye said the request has been included in the last three Con-stant Contact e-mails with a listing of the eligible clubs. Allen suggested that each eligible club be contacted person-ally. LaJoye asked Allen to do this. Allen stated that she feels it would be a good idea to contact clubs well in advance so that they have time to raise funds with an eye toward hosting the national. The next regular board meeting will be on Monday, 17 October 2011. Agenda items should be sent to Harner by mid-September. There being no further business Comstock made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. The motion car-ried on a unanimous voice vote and the meeting was adjourned by LaJoye at 10:05 p.m. EDT.

EDT.

Respectfully submitted,Sonya M. Baird

Our centerfold star this issue needs no introduction. CH Zodiac’s Special Beau was pretty special from the time he first appeared on the show scene. He was a fine individual and an animated showman who possessed the charisma to win the hearts of judges and ringside simulta-neously! Bred by Juanita Camp and sold to Bob Breum at a very young age, Tony wasted no time in becom-ing America’s dar-ling in the world of Boston Terri-ers. While he was not heavily cam-paigned compared to some of today’s winners, and was only shown at shows where his owner could pilot him to his wins, he managed to garner 10 Bests of Show (all breeds), 9 Bests of Breed (specialties), 106 Best of Breed, 25 Group I’s, 18 Group II’s, 17 Group III’s and 8 Group IV’s. What an amazing record for an owner-handled Boston Terrier! If his accomplishments in the show ring were not enough to be proud

of, his ability to sire top-notch quality in-dividuals, stamped with his own personal class, certainly set him apart from others of his generation. It is the opinion of this writer and that of other Boston enthusiasts that Tony was poised to shatter all Boston Terrier records

as a sire of champi-ons when his life was cut short at such a very young age. While he sired 42 champions of record, many of us in the fancy are still stunned by his death and left with that empty feeling of what might have been! While Tony has been gone for some time now, his presence is still be-

ing felt in America’s show rings today. What finer tribute could be paid to that little won-der dog, CH Zodiac’s Special Beau? If you have ever wondered why Tony sired the quality that he did, try tracing his pedigree back seven generations as I have done. There you will find that his “roots” are deeply imbedded in the blood of CH Hagerty Again, through Royal Kid, CH

CH Zodiac’s Special Beau - 1984 The Boston terrier was cre-ated to be a companion to man. There are Bostons who are mousers; some are watchdogs of a sort; and a few act as though they were herding dogs, but first and foremost they are compan-ions. Bostons owned by joggers are happy to jog with their mas-ters, and those owned by inva-lids happily spend their days on the bed. Whatever is neces-sary to be with his people, that is what a Boston wants to do. Tony is no exception; he is first and foremost a companion—and there never was a brighter, funnier, more intelligent or more loyal companion. It is true that Tony had a successful show career. Owner-handles, he won ten all-breed Bests-in show, twenty-six Group firsts (numerous other Group placements) and nine Boston terrier specialty show bests of breed. He always showed with verve, making friends for the breed. It is also true that he has had a successful stud career. To date he has sired thirty champions, including one best in show dog and several who have won specialty shows and group placements. Many of his puppies have the distinctive Boston temperament, which makes us love this breed above all others. Through his puppies, Tony has made more friends. But it is not his show career or stud dog capabilities that make this dog so loved. It’s the scintil-lating intelligence emanating like sparks from this muscular, tight-knit little dog. He’s only fourteen pounds, but the glint in his eye leaves no doubt that he owns the world!

Royal Kid’s Specialty, CH Royal Kid Regards, CH Regardless, CH Grant’s Royal Command and down to our present day Bostons. But to give credit to only the fine sires showing in his pedigree would be a grave injustice for, as one might suspect, there is an array of fine champion bitches and others of good quality who were good producers also. How does one produce a dog of Tony’s quality and potency? By plan-ning very carefully and selecting the best! In truth, in the case of Tony, it was a joint effort by some of Amer-ica’s most astute breeders … namely, Irv and Eva Kruger, the Richardsons (Detroit), Florence Dancer, Louise Grant, Mrs. Anders (Royal Kennels), Kathryn Schuett, Andy Turner, Susan (Pearl) Ruble and of course, Juanita Camp, his breeder.

Down and back with juniorsby Sherry Patton

Introducing the newest edition to the Coast to Coast… a page dedicated to the Juniors. Thank you BTCA board and C2C for allowing the kids a page to call their own. Here you, the readers, can find news, brags and info specifi-cally about and for Junior Handlers of Boston Terriers. Junior handlers are the future of our hobby and our beloved breed. They need all the support, edu-cation and encouragement we can give them. So at your next dog show, stop by the Juniors ring and offer them a hand clap of praise, a word of encouragement and/or maybe a tip or two. If you are a junior handler, the parent of a junior, or know of a Boston Junior, please for-ward their name, contact info and any news or brags to me, Sherry Patton, at [email protected], so we can be sure to include them and their accom-plishments here. Being the mom of two Junior Han-dlers I understand the kids’ needs and also how much differ-ence even a little bit of encouragement makes to our kids. We have personally been blessed to have some great people encourage my own kids, and I would like to see that for all the juniors. I would also like to see wonderful opportunities for all the Boston Juniors within the BTCA, that supports the kids even more. So if you have ideas or suggestions let me know. I have created a Facebook Group called “Boston Terrier Junior Handlers” for the kids to communicate and network with one another. There they can safely talk about shows and judges, brags and tips, maybe even offer show clothes to

swap or sell. Friend me on FB and let me know you’re a Jr. and I will gladly add Juniors and their parents to the group. Jennifer Kurts, a fellow Boston Jrs. mom, is creating a Juniors ad page in each edition of the E Boston Terrier magazine, free of charge thanks to the magazine. So please forward Jrs. info, news & brags to her at [email protected] and she will be glad to include your child in the juniors ad. Now onto the Juniors news:

The at Clemson continues with the following update from Dr. Alison Starr-Moss: We have run a preliminary subset of Bostons and Bulldogs with and without clefts on the Snp arrays and found some interesting data. There was one place in the genome that looked as though there was an association, and we are pursuing that now. We need additional samples

to confirm the region of interest and for subsequent follow-up studies. They continue to need samples. Contact Dr. Alison Starr-Moss at [email protected] or 864-656-0191. More information on partici-pating in this study can be found here: http://bostonterrierclubofamerica.org/boston-terrier-health/boston-terrier-health-club-news.html
