Jaime Steward of Blackwood, a former pitcher in the Anaheim Angels organization, begins his third sea-son as an assistant coach at Rider.

“Jaime was an excellent addition to our staff,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “He has been successful at everylevel and has pitched for championship teams at the high school and college level.”

“I am very excited to be a part of the Rider Baseball Program,” said Steward. “Coach Davis is a proven winner andI am constantly learning from him.”

Steward is a 1997 graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School and a 2001 graduate of Le Moyne College. At LeMoyne Steward graduated as the career leader in strikeouts and innings pitched, and was drafted in the 39th roundby the Angels.

“As a former player in the MAAC, this is familiar territory for me,” Steward said.

The 2001 Le Moyne Athlete of the Year, Steward was the MAAC Pitcher of the Year in 1999, after earning MAACRookie of the Year honors in 1998. At Gloucester Catholic Steward earned All-State and honorable mention All-America honors as a senior, leading his team to a national ranking of fifth.

“I have high expectations for our pitching staff as we work toward regaining the MAAC Championship,” Steward said.

After two years in the Angels’ organization Steward pitched for the Camden River Sharks and the Atlantic City Surf, and was selected as thestarting pitcher in the 2005 Atlantic League South Division All-Star game. “That experience brings instant credibility to our pitching pro-gram,” Davis said. “I am looking forward to working with him this year.”

Tim Reilly begins his first season as an assistant coach at Rider. A recent graduateof Rutgers University, Reilly served as an assistant coach under Fred Hill.

“We are excited to have Tim on board with us,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, who led the Broncs to their second NCAA Tournament in the last three years in2010. “He brings energy to our program. His desire and work ethic are evident.”

Reilly has worked at the Second To None Baseball Academy in Margate as askills/conditioning coach under Johnny Monell.

A summer ball head coach for Holy Spirit High School, Reilly played four years onthe Rutgers varsity baseball team and was named to the Big East All-Academicteam.

“Tim will work with the catchers and will be our third base coach,” said Davis, whowon a Rider-record 36 games last season.

Scipione comes to Rider from Delsea Regional High School, where he served as head coach the last three seasons and won the Tri-County Cham-pionship in 2007. He also coached at St. Joseph High School, where his squad won the C.A.L. Division 2 Championship in 2003, 2005 and2006.

“Ray will bring seven years of high school head coaching experience to our program,” Davis said. In those seven years Scipione compiled a 93-57 record, was the Atlantic City Press Coach of the Year in 2005 and also serves as head coach of the Tri-Cape Carpenter Cup team.

“It’s been a goal of mine to coach at the Division 1 level and I can’t wait to get started,” Scipione said. “Coach Davis is one of the best in thecountry, and I know Rider has the type of program that can compete for a MAAC title and a Regional berth year-in and year-out. It’s my jobto help make sure that happens.”

Scipione was a three-time All-Conference outfielder at Hammonton High School and helped the Bergen Beach Future Prospects team (Brooklyn,NY) win the National Championship. At Camden County College Scipione led the Mid-East Region with a .480 batting average in 1992 andwent on to Elon University, where he batted .340. “Ray will work directly with our hitters and coach the outfielders,” Davis said. “His success asa player and coach should translate into a solid foundation for our hitters.”

With more playing experience than any team in programhistory, the 2011 Rider Broncs are picked to win a thirdMetro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in a

four year span.“It is not the number of seniors but the amount of games they’ve

played that makes this team such a veteran squad,” said Rider headcoach Barry Davis. “These players have played in a lot of big games.”

Over the last three seasons Rider is 6-3 in three MAAC cham-pionship tournaments and appeared in two NCAA Regionals.

“Our experience has got to come through at some point,” Davissaid. “The key for us is to be able to push each other and take chargeof the situation. You want senior leadership. I’d rather be picked firstthan fourth or fifth. High expectations are good. It shows that we’vegrown and others have noticed it.”

The Broncs’ offense will be led by senior first baseman MasonHeyne, senior second baseman AJ Albee, senior shortstop John Ral-ston and senior designated hitter Steve Galella. “All four of themcould graduate with 200 hits,” Davis said. “That is not easy to do.”At Rider it has only been done six times.

Along with sophomore third baseman Adam Wayman, the re-turning infield has a combined 486 starts under its collective belt.“You don’t fix what ain’t broke and we don’t have to fix much in theinfield,” Davis said.

Heyne enters his senior year 10th in career hits, 11th in careerhome runs and fourth in career RBI at Rider. “Mason is athletic andis expecting a big year,” Davis said. “He‘s about as good as there is inthe league at first base. He’ll bat fourth for us.”

A member of both the 2008 and the 2010 MAAC All-Tourna-ment teams, Heyne was a Second Team All-NJCBA selection last year. His 21 doubles last season was one shy of the Rider single-seasonrecord and his 52 career doubles is 11 shy of the Rider record.

Albee was the MVP of the MAAC Championship Tournament lastyear while setting Rider single-season records for runs scored, RBIand assists. “He gets on base and scores runs and he plays solid de-fense,” Davis said. “It would be hard to improve on the numbers heput up last year but it would be nice to see. He’s capable. He willagain bat third in our line-up.”

Ralston has started 161 games at shortstop and has 150 hits. “Ral-ston is a grinder,” Davis said. “We expect him to play well and hardevery day in a very important position.”

Wayman was a member of the NJCBA All-Rookie team and bat-ted .330 against MAAC pitchers with 31 hits and 24 RBI in 24 con-ference games. “Adam has more confidence this year,” Davis said.“He’s a solid player who should hit fifth or sixth and we’re expectinga better year from him this year.”

Galella earned First Team All-NJCBA last year and was named tothe MAAC All-Academic Team for the second time. He batted .423against MAAC pitchers (30 hits), the seventh best average in the con-ference.

“Galella is our DH again this year and will play a lot,” Davis said.“He will back up second or first as well.”

The pitching corps features the top starter in the MAAC, seniorMike Thomas, and the top closer, sophomore Tyler Smith.

Thomas was a First Team All-East selection last year and his name

appeared on the 2010 All-America ballot. The MAAC and New Jer-sey Pitcher of the Year in 2010, Thomas set Rider single-seasonrecords for strikeouts (98) and innings pitched (104.1) and led theMAAC in strikeouts and victories (nine) last season.

“Thomas had a great junior year after coming on late as a sopho-more,” Davis said. “We’re expecting him to pitch like a number one, like one of the best pitchers in the MAAC. He expects a lot out ofhimself and we’re counting on him to go out and pitch the first gameof each series we play.”

Smith was the New Jersey College Baseball Association RookiePitcher of the Year and led the MAAC with nine saves, including onein the MAAC Title Game. Smith was also third on the 2010 team inwins and owned the second best earned run average on the team.

“Tyler Smith is again our closer,” Davis said. “We feel pretty goodthere. He is more than capable of pitching more than just the ninthinning and depending on how much he pitches on Saturday wouldallow us to use him more on Sunday.”

Other key pitchers include junior Patrick Devlin, senior Nate Ep-pley, sophomores Joe Calogero and Chris LeRoy and freshman KyleKennett.

Devlin was second on the 2010 team in wins (7-3) after winninghis last four decisions and already has 25 career starts with two sea-sons of eligibility remaining. “Devlin has pitched some big games forus, and he’s won some big games for us,” Davis said. “We have a lotof confidence in him. He’s a big game pitcher. He’ll pitch game threeof the conference series.”

Eppley was the team’s Pitcher of the Year in 2009 as the ‘bridge’between starter and closer, and will move to the starting rotation thisyear. “Nate will begin the season as our seven-inning game starter,”Davis said. “He looks good. He gets a lot of ground balls and doesn’twalk a lot of batters. He has pitched well in the bullpen and we thinkhe can be a weekend starter for us.”

Calogero started nine games as a rookie and Rider was 7-2 in thosegames. “Calogero begins the season as our fourth starter, pitching inthe middle of the week to start the season,” Davis said. “He couldpitch his way into the weekend rotation.”

LeRoy served as the “bridge” between starters and the closer lastseason and was fourth on the team in earned run average and third inappearances. “LeRoy will again serve as one of our middle relievers,”Davis said. “That’s an important role on this team.”

Kennett compiled an 18-8 scholastic record. “Kyle could be astarter,” Davis said. “He’s been impressive in the preseason workouts. He understands the game and he’s a battler. He will be used in everysituation.”

Other key pitchers will be sophomore Chris Taylor, senior Jeff Gior-dano, sophomore Tim Hogan and sophomore Sean Kuberiet. “Some-one from that group will step up will serve an important role for us,one as a starter and others in middle relief,” Davis said. “This group, that includes LeRoy and freshmen right-handers Mike Campbell andJulian Anapolsky, will have a big impact on our team’s success.”

The outfield returns junior Brandon Cotten in centerfield and sen-ior Karl Johnston in right field.

Cotten is a preseason All-MAAC selection after being named tothe MAAC All-Tournament team last year and earning First Team

Page 8:  · 2011-04-06 · pionship in 2007. He also coached at St. Joseph High School, where his squad won the C.A.L. Division 2 Championship in 2003, 2005 and 2006. “Ray will bring seven

All-NJCBA honors. Regarded as one of the top defensive outfieldersin the MAAC, Cotten compiled 133 put outs last year and just twoerrors and his .351 batting average was third best on the 2010 team.

“Cotten will lead off again and play center,” Davis said. “I thinkhe’s the best defensive centerfielder in the league. He can really goget it. At the plate, with his speed he doesn’t have to hit the ball farto get on base. He’s been a clutch player and he’s very athletic.”

Johnston was named the Most Improved Player on the 2010 team, scoring a team-high 24 runs in 24 MAAC games. One of only twoBroncs to play in every game last year, Johnston led the team in stolenbases.

“Karl will be in right field again and will bat second,” Davis said.“He had a great year last year. He’s hard to get out of the line-up.He’s a hard worker and he understands counts and gives you good atbats. He’s our most aggressive base runner. Karl is important.”

The fourth outfielder last year, sophomore Ian Lindsay will beginthe season in left field this year. “Lindsey is a good hitter and runspretty well,” Davis said. “He’ll be in left and hit fifth or sixth. Hewas a great hitter in high school. This is his opportunity this year.”

Behind the plate will be sophomore Mike O’Reilly and freshmanKen Kremer. O’Reilly played in 32 games as a rookie, starting 20.“O’Reilly caught in some big games last year,” Davis said. “He’spretty solid defensively. He’s improving his throwing and he gets onbase a lot.”

Kremer is an athletic freshman who can catch and play middle in-field. “Kremer is still learning the catcher position,” Davis said. “He’svery athletic with a good arm and can play second or third for us if weneeded him to. He’s pretty athletic. He’s an infielder by trade, butthis year he needs to be ready to catch.” Kremer is the son of two-timeAll-American Ken Kremer, who played for Rider in the mid-1980sbefore turning pro and is a member of the Rider Athletics Hall ofFame.

Junior Chris Pierfy, who owns a .500 career batting average, willbe the third catcher again this year. “Pierfy will again be our thirdcatcher,” Davis said. “He has worked hard.”

Other key returnees include junior Ryan Murphy, who is a veteranof 47 games, including seven starts, and has been used primarily as apinch hitter. “Murphy will pinch hit, DH and will back up Heyne atfirst,” Davis said.

The key newcomers, in addition to Kremer and Kennett, shouldbe freshmen Nick Crescenzo, Steve Stopper and Jerry Mulderig.

Crescenzo was an All-Conference outfielder and football quarter-back in high school. “Crescenzo will see action this year in the out-field,” Davis said. “He is the fastest guy on the team and he’s goingto push for playing time. He’s very athletic. He played infield in highschool but he’ll be in the outfield here.”

“Stopper can play all three outfield positions,” Davis said. “He iscoming off an injury in the fall but will add quality depth to our out-field.”

Mulderig was a second baseman/pitcher in high school. “Mul-derig will see action in both infield and outfield,” Davis said. “Hegives us some left-handed power. He’s athletic and versatile.”

The season starts in Johnson City, Tennessee February 25 and ends

in Cleveland, Ohio May 21 before the MAAC tournament May 25-29 at Waterfront Park in Trenton.

“We have a tough MAAC road schedule, having to travel to Siena,to Marist and to Manhattan,” Davis said. “That’s not easy. That putseven more importance on the MAAC home games.”

MAAC play begins March 26 at Niagara. Rider is picked to winthe MAAC after finishing third in the regular season last year. “Thereare probably four or five teams that could have been picked first,’Davis said. “The first year we hosted the MAACs (2008) we had agoal to make the tournament. Now expectations are certainly higherfor good reason and we expect to contend for the championship.”

ABOUT RIDER • ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT

Page 11

Rider’s enrollment of almost 6,000 consists of over 4,400 full- andpart-time undergraduate and more than 1,400 graduate students

studying on campuses in Lawrenceville and Princeton, New Jersey. The University is comprised of four academic units - the College ofBusiness Administration; the College of Liberal Arts, Education, andSciences; the College of Continuing Studies; and Westminster Collegeof the Arts- and offers undergraduate programs in 60 areas and grad-uate programs in 17 specialties.

Ninety-six percent of Rider’s 244 full-time faculty hold doctoral de-grees or the highest credential in their field. Rider’s faculty are award-winning teachers and researchers dedicated to excellence in teaching, learning and scholarship and 13 have been named Fulbright Scholars.Rider’s classes are small and interactive with a student-faculty ratio of13:1. Rider’s curricula balance theory and practice, and emphasize learn-ing by doing through more than 1,000 student internships or field ex-periences, community service learning placements, and undergraduateresearch fellowships. Westminster’s internationally acclaimed choirs per-form with world-famous orchestras and conductors in the United Statesand abroad, further demonstrating Rider’s commitment to experientiallearning.

Rider is currently ranked in the top tier of northern regional uni-versities under the designation of “Best Universities - Master’s” byU.S. News and World Report and has been included in the last eight edi-tions of The Princeton Review’s Best 373 Colleges, its list of the nation’stop 10 percent of colleges and universities.

The University’s many specialized accreditations attest to the qual-ity of its academic programs. Rider is among the select businessschools to have attained AACSB (Association to Advance CollegiateSchools of Business) accreditation and one of only two schools in NewJersey to hold the specialized AACSB accreditation in accounting.Elementary and secondary education programs and their applicable

graduate programs on both campuses are accredited by the NationalCouncil for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Theundergraduate and graduate music programs of Westminster ChoirCollege are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music(NASM). In addition, Rider’s graduate counseling services programin the School of Education holds the Council for Accreditation ofCounseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) nationalaccreditation. Rider University is regionally accredited by the MiddleStates Association of Colleges and Schools.

Rider University is a member of the National Collegiate AthleticAssociation (NCAA) Division I for both men’s and women’s athletics. The University offers 20 varsity sports - 10 men’s and 10 women’s teams- 18 in the competitive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)with field hockey in the Northeast Conference (NEC) and wrestling in theColonial Athletic Association (CAA).

Arete’

With the start of the 1990-91 academic school year, Rider Universityimplemented its innovative Arete' Program for all student-athletes.Arete' refers to the ancient Greek ideal of a balanced striving for excellencein all areas of life. The purpose of the program, which has been detailedin The New York Times and The Times of Trenton, is to help student-athletesdevelop in all areas of their lives, not just on the playing fields or in theclassroom. Subjects of the seminars include time management, stressmanagement, sports nutrition, substance abuse, communication skills, study skills, training techniques, HIV, etiquette/good manners, inter-view techniques, resume writing, and life after Rider.

Student Transitional Education Program (STEP)

During the 1993-94 academic year, the Rider Department of Athleticsdeveloped STEP for varsity athletics. Under the direction of the associ-ate director of athletics, STEP provides individual and group tutoring,as well as study tables that are mandatory for certain student-athletes.STEP also coordinates progress reports, monitors the student-athletesacademic progress, and provides workshops on topics such as libraryskills, test taking and note taking. In 2003 Rider added its first full-time academic support coordinator, Sonya Hurt.

TeamMentor

Through the mentor program, established in the fall of 1994, Rider fac-ulty members or administration are paired with varsity athletic teams.Mentors are present for support, advice, cheerleading, as well as othernon-coaching duties. The mentor program opens communication linesbetween faculty/staff members and student-athletes, and gives the stu-dent-athlete another person in the Rider community to turn to for sup-port and guidance.

Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC)

Comprised of one student-athlete from each of Rider’s varsity teams, theStudent-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) meets monthly to discussvarious student-welfare issues and to organize ways for student-athletesto become involved in the community. Through SAAC, Rider student-athletes have organized toy drives and served meals to the needy atThanksgiving.
