Fellow Members,

At the January general meeting, we discussed the release by the Australian Government of a consultation Regulation Impact Statement (RIS) to examine the case for adopting an international standard on pedestrian safety (Global Technical Regulation 9 Pedestrian Safety), as a new Australian Design Rule (ADR). It was stated that compliance with the ADR would likely be compromised by the fitting of a bull bar (also known as a Vehicle Front Protection Systems or VFPS), as this would invariably stiffen the front of the vehicle.

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The RIS goes on to specifically state that, for vehicles specifically designed for off-road use, such as 4WD passenger cars (eg Subaru Forester), 4WD light commercial vehicles (eg Toyota Hilux) and 4WD Sports Utility Vehicles or “SUVs” (eg Toyota Landcruiser, Landrover, Nissan Patrol), a standard already established in Australia (Australian Standard 4876.1 2002) would apply (and not the international standard). This Australian standard would be more design flexible and has already been partly adopted by NSW and Victorian transport authorities. I have not yet reviewed this standard.

A full summary of the proposed requirements can be downloaded at http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/motor/design/files/Pedestrian_Safety_Requirement_Summary.pdf

Another industry issue previously discussed is the proposal to create another 40 UHF channels by interleaving the 40 new 12.5 kHz (narrowband) channels between the existing 40 25kHz (wideband) channels.

While you will still be able to use wideband radios after the introduction of the changes, you will only be able to do so until (it seems) 1 July 2017. After that date, we will all need to have new narrowband radios. If these changes go ahead, which looks likely, I expect that it will only be a short period of time before you can only buy narrowband radios.

A copy of the Discussion Paper for these changes issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority in January this year

I am pleased to report that new Club stickers have been printed and collected. If you want a new sticker, please see me. They are now $2.00 each. And, as reported at the February meeting, Club members can now purchase Zazzle merchandise through me, as Merchandise Officer. The Zazzle website is at http://www.zazzle.com.au. I hope to have full details on all available merchandise, and the process to purchase through Zazzle, on the website shortly.

Coming up on the March LWE is John Cahill’s trip “Wedge and Beyond”. John has pre-tripped it, so I am sure it will be very enjoyable. I am looking forward to it.

At the March meeting, we will be having a “slide” night on the 3 Bights trip. Keith Wilcox will show his photos and/or movie. I have been lucky enough to get a preview and they are well worth seeing! See you there.

Regards, Tony Richards

TRIP CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT March 2011

Hi All,

We are starting to move into the season of trips with a number of long weekends and public holidays in the first half of the year.

We are lucky to have some new (to many of us) places to visit such as the Captain Fawcett Track, the Indian Ocean Drive on the way to camp up at Ellendale Pool and Warriedar station and surrounds.

Thanks to everyone who has come up with ideas & keep them coming.

Tony Richards has proposed a 4 week trip o the Kimberley Region in June- people interested should get in touch with him.

We are also trying to get an idea how many would be interested in a long weekend trip to Walga Rock (just out from Cue) in June as a possible send off for those carrying on to the proposed Kimberley trip, If we get enough interest we will go ahead with it otherwise it will be cancelled.

See below and on next page for a list of upcoming trips and socials.

Cheers David

SCARP SCAMPER SUNDAY 27TH MARCH

Take a look at some of the sights and delights of the Darling scarp as we take a day trip to Waroona and then north along gravel roads near the brow of the scarp to Jarrahdale before returning home.

Details:

Some of the things to check out on this trip include forest recovery after the major fire at Dwellingup in 2007, the Marrinup POW Camp , Oakley Dam perched right on the edge of the escarpment, the old Whittakers Mill site, North Dandalup and Serpentine Dams and the Karnet Prison farm. A discussion theme for the day will the sad plight of our water sup-ply dams and prospects for the future in a drying climate, but there will be time for others! There should also be time for a pleasant cafe stop at either Dwellin-gup or Jarrahdale. Most of the driving on this trip will be bitumen or good quality gravel with the possibility of only very short sections of slightly more adven-turous stuff. Bring a sun hat and cream, a picnic lunch and your camera. If you have any any queries please give Keith a call on 9459 3358 or 0407 477 446. Notes:

Ten Pin Bowling Plus Saturday 9TH APRIL

This Social Event gives you the opportunity to possibly revisit past triumphs by propelling large moderately heavy round objects in the approximate di-rection of a bunch of tenpins.

Whether or not you have ever gone tenpin bowling before, here is the opportunity for some fun. Costs are $14.90 for 1 game or $21.90 for two games including shoe hire. Those in the know suggest planning on 2 games. I have booked 4 lanes for us.

The + part is the opportunity to grab a bite to eat afterwards in company with any others in the group who wish to do so. The venue has a range of food options within 100 metres. These include 1 pizzeria, 1 Italian café including pizza, 1 fish and chips, 1 Chinese restaurant and a “Sizzlers”.

WALGA ROCK 4TH-6TH JUNE LWE

A long weekend trip to Walga Rock (just out from Cue) is proposed.

Walga Rock is the second largest monolith in Australia. Located at 27°

24′S 117°27′E about 50 kilometres south-west of Cue, Western Austra-

lia, it contains a cave with an extensive gallery of Indigenous art.

A painting of what appears at first glance to be a sailing ship also ap-

pears superimposed over some of the earlier works and underneath

there are lines of writing that while resembling a Cyrillic or Arabic script

have not been identified. While the Indigenous gallery is in itself remark-

able, there has been a great deal of speculation about the painting, es-

pecially considering it is located 325 kilometres from the coast. It has

been argued that it was drawn by survivors of the three-masted Dutch

East India ships Batavia or Zuytdorp; or that it represents a 'contact

painting' by indigenous Australians who saw a ship on the coast and

then moved inland.

September 23, 24 and 25, 2011

– optional extra day Sept 22

Here is your chance to visit the Fitzgerald River National Park, with over 1,800 known plant species - 250 of these being rare and 62 only occurring within the park. There are a greater number of flora species in Fitzgerald River NP alone than exist in the whole of the

There will be several guided walks, including a wildflower walk, a bush sun-downer, and an easy climb up West Mt Bar-ren. There is also excellent kayaking in the Gairdiner River - access just 2k from camp - as well as whale watching from Pt Ann.

3 Bights - Day 3 – Tuesday 28 December 2010 Keith Low

I slept very well overnight and got up relatively late this morning, about 6:15 am. After a fairly stock-standard breakfast and pack-up, we got away from camp about 7:45 am. Only a couple of hundred metres down the track we came to another spot that may have made a good camp-site, and which included a couple of old, rusting water tanks that Simon could recall from the 2002 trip.

Not surprisingly, the track was pretty rough, with plenty of limestone out-cropping, and we made quite slow going. We were second car, behind Tony and Jeanette, so we missed having Simon point out the location of “Slightly Damp Camp” as they went past it. Shortly, afterwards, we met

Grant and his travelling companion heading back out. As suspected, he had simply underestimated the time it would take him to get down to the cliffs and back on the rough track, and they had camped for the night near Baxter Memorial. After a brief discussion, we left them to go on and continued our way south to the Baxter Memorial.

We actually had a bit of trouble finding the memorial as it was not where it was marked on the map and we weren’t sure what we were looking for. In the end, however, it was quite a significant structure which had been erected by the WA Historical Society in 1930, and we couldn’t really miss it. It was rough terrain with thick scrub and it wasn’t hard to imagine how difficult the Eyre expedition members would have been finding it when they came through here. Of course, it was a lot worse once poor Baxter was killed and two aboriginal members of the party decamped!

Before we left the memorial we honoured Jim Wilcox’s request to find the geocache located nearby, and replace it with one he had given us before the trip. It was an interesting process, although much of the inter-est was in how people get so involved in the practice! After doing that duty, we headed off again and arrived at the Baxter Cliffs in time for

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

Page 20: 2011-03

morning tea. The wind was considerably less than we expected and it was quite warm, so we spent some time enjoying the splendid views and having a look around.

Once morning tea was completed we hit the track again, slowly retracing our steps to the Caiguna turn off, before heading west along the Tele-graph Track. On the way, we in the front cars again missed identifying “Slightly Damp Camp” but did come to the conclusion that a track we had seen on the way south was the one that went east back to the Tele-graph Track. Again, it wasn’t quite where it was shown on the map.

Within a couple of minutes of leaving the Caiguna turn-off, I noticed a depression beside the track which turned out to be a doline. Tony and Jeanette, who had missed it, came back and we all spent a little time checking it out. By this stage, it was feeling very hot and we thought we may have been getting the pre-trough weather we had experienced in Perth a few days earlier. However, strangely, all of the Foresters’ out-side temperature gauges were saying it was only in the very low 20’s which we simply couldn’t believe.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

Page 21: 2011-03

Page 21

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

A little later, when we stopped for lunch, the sun was blazing and we pulled the awning out to give a few people some respite in the shade whilst hey had lunch. Our only theory for the consistent low readings on the outside temperature readings was that the thermocouples were all covered in dust because, between the limestone sections, the track was extremely dusty. In fact, I was really feeling for Karl and Jakob, who did not have their driver’s door window to keep the dust out!

After lunch, as we kept moving west towards Toolinna Cove, Keith W saw a snake on the track, another sign that it was pretty warm. During the afternoon, Josan hit a protruding rock a bit hard and did some dam-age to her exhaust. Thereafter it sounded as if we had a WRX amongst our group. As it became time to find a camping spot in late afternoon, so the potential spots seemed to dry up. Eventually, we found a spot that was very cosy, to say the least, and busily set about trying to work out how we would all fit in. Keith and Fiona, however, had gone on to see it there was anything better and soon reported a better spot a couple of kilometres down the track. We quickly followed and were very pleased to see a much bigger and more suitable camp site, probably only a few kilometres short of Toolinna Cove.

After “fivesers”, Jo and I did spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, although I cooked a lot more than neces-sary, on Tony’s rec-ommendation about what was required! Again, we enjoyed another good camp-fire and more people stayed a little longer than last night.

NORNALUP ECO PARK Day one – The trip Down. 26th Jan 2010

Rob & Wendy Griffiths

Fourteen intrepid explorers

in six cars set off at dawn

(or perhaps a couple of

hours earlier, given

Perth’s lack of daylight

saving) to explore the area

of the south coast known to

those in the know as the

valley of the giants. Would

all return, would they find

these mythical giants, and more importantly, would they remember to

pack their tents.

Meeting up at the Carradine / Albany highway park, much used on these

occasions we were quickly off on our latest adventure.

Morning tea was soon upon us, stopping at Kojonup for some sustaining

nibbles. The drive itself was uneventful we noted how little traffic was on

the roads other than one car trying as Dave put it ‘to climb into my boot’,

and several others as Ray put it: ‘up his clacker’ , we can only assume

the majority of the populous isn't as brave or adventurous as us.

Mount Barker was our lunchtime stop, the public holiday keeping most

shops closed, we retired to a traditional petrol station stop. Feasting well,

we were soon once again on the road.

An emergency ensued later in the afternoon, as it was discovered some-

one had forgot to pack their cosmetics bag. This near disaster was nar-

rowly averted thanks to IGA in Denmark, where further provisions of lol-

lys and ices were obtained.

TRIP & SOCIAL REPORTS

We arrived at the camp ground just after three, as per plan. Meeting up

with our three final adventurers who had arrived just minutes earlier from

Albany. The site was excellently located.

We all retired tired, to bed, saying goodnight to the many mosquitoes.

Whilst that concluded day one, I can’t signoff without saying what an en-

joyable trip this was. Wendy and I haven’t really explored this area, and

will definitely be back. Well planned, and well executed – thanks Keith.

NORNALUP DAY 2-27TH JAN 2010

A slow start to the day with everyone getting up at a leisurely pace and it was decided to head off into Nornalup at 9:30. Dawn stayed in camp to have a relaxing day and the rest of us loaded canoes and fishing gear and found a grassy spot in town on the Frankland River. David & Wendy headed off upstream in their kayaks and Jason & Jack proceeded to give people rides in the Canadian canoe, others tried their hand at fish-ing (without much luck) and some went for a swim. Gary spotted a few white tailed Black cockatoos which he was happy with.

David & Wendy paddled for an hour through the forest and ended up at a small land-ing that had a lady resting on it and she told us it was Monastery landing which was 6 km from Nornalup. This was a good place to turn

around and on the way back we encountered a couple of people fly fish-ing from their boat. When we got back it was decided to go into Walpole to have lunch and we stopped in a park in town and people had a look around and visited the tourist centre. After lunch we went to coal mine beach but it was very windy and only Sean & Liam went for a swim.

On again down the Knoll scenic drive and on the way stopped at the ‘channels’ where the bush goes right down to the water and here Wendy went for a swim and spotted a stingray.

Back inland next stop was at a lookout for panoramic views over the inlet and then a short drive and a walk through the forest to admire the 300 year old giant Tingle tree that has had its centre burnt out over the years and at 24 metres, is the largest, liv-ing, girthed eucalypt known in the world.

Last stop for the day was ‘Circular pool’ which is fed by the Frankland River over a rocky section with small water falls feeding into the circular shaped pool at the bottom.

Back to camp in time for a hot shower and 5 o’clock nibbles and when dinner time came most people ended up cooking sau-sages.

The day had been fine though windy by the coast with the temperature about 26°.

NORNALUP DAY 3 -28TH JAN 2010 (Ray Rabbit)

Woke early this morning to the sound of light rain on the tent, “Oh B---er “ hate rain.

The rain soon stopped and everyone emerged to have breakfast and prepare for the day’s activity, a run to the river mouth at Broke Inlet.

Didn’t take long to head back through Walpole, and eventually turn into Mandalay Beach Road and then on to Fisherman Track, now the fun be-gins.

The track is just that, a track through the scrub made by fishermen years ago, probably by following a local lost goat. I was logging our progress with my GPS onto my laptop which showed that we were following the mapped track very infrequently.

We stopped at one of the old huts for morning tea and checked out the relics and also a couple of large spiders. Continuing on we had to do a bit of road repair, squeeze past outgoing traffic, and recover from a cou-ple of sand boggings (no Names) to reach the sandbar at the mouth. We sheltered from the sun and wind for lunch. The older boys climbed to the top of the hill to view from the cliff top while the two younger boys went fishing in the inlet. After lunch the soft sand almost claimed the Outback but we extracted it with a heavy push.

The way back seemed easier as we knew the track now. We stopped at another shack on the edge of the inlet for afternoon tea. The GPS’s in various cars showed us to be driving some on land and some in the wa-ter as we skirted the inlet back to the main road. Back at Walpole we went to Coalmine Beach overlooking the Nornalup Inlet, very cold and windy today.

We had decided earlier to have tea at the Walpole Hotel tonight. All en-joyed a good meal and drinks. It was here that we heard about the Cy-clone Bianca predicted to come down the coast to Bunbury. After delib-erations it was decided to check reports in the morning to see if we leave early.

It had still been a good time away which we all enjoyed.

SUBARU 4WD CLUB of W.A. INC

Membership:

Total memberships – 46 Ordinary memberships + 7 life members = 53

4 members from last year advised that that they will not be renewing their membership.

Merchandise:

Due to perceived difficulties of getting approval for use of Subaru name on merchandise items that could be sold to the general public (non-Club members) – decided not to have an actual Club Zazzle shop. The rec-ommendation was made that members should approach Tony Richards if they want a Zazzle merchandise item who will then order the item for them.

It was agreed to put a list of standard available merchandise items up on the site.

A stock of replacement Club membership stickers is required. A quote of $2.00 each has been received from Expo. Because the total order value is more than allowed under the constitution and is not a normal expense, approval from the General Meeting is required.

Motion: An order for 100 stickers at a price of $220 incl GST be placed with Expo. Moved by Tony Richards and seconded by Keith Low. Carried.

Travis Maskey brought excess accessories for 03-05 Subarus from his employer and offered them for sale at special clearance prices. Thank you Travis – please also thank your employer.

4WD Association:

No January 4WD meeting – no report.

Editor:

email advising that the new magazine has been uploaded.

An email was received from Jenny Kessell confirming that Dawn Chivers (her mother) wanted to receive a hard copy.

The trip reports submission date is the last Thursday of the month, 24th February, 2011.

There was some discussion about advert charges in the General Meet-ing. It was agreed to keep the same charges.

There was some discussion whether it was now still necessary to publish the minutes of the GM in the magazine since they are only relevant to club members. A suggestion was made to publish them in the member’s only section of the web site. Further discussion deferred to the Commit-tee meeting.

Trips/Socials:

Nornalup trip very good – left camp early due to impending cyclone. Good camp ground with plenty of activities. Well done Keith Wilcox

Tony indicated that he was thinking about a Kimberley Trip in June and asked whether there was any interest among members. Some interest was indicated. Web Site Update:

Rob Griffiths reported on enhancements to the site:

Version 12A –

Password reset – customisable password with user instigated reset.

Suggested from the meeting that there should be a limit on the number of retry attempts.

Though a template trip the questions for a trip can now be fully custom-ised.

There are a range of regular reports that can be generated. Rob re-quested that the committee send him a description of any such reports that they may need. Eg. Magazine mailing list and number.

General Business:

DEC has called for comment on the Leeuwin Naturaliste parks manage-ment plan. Keith Low is examining and will get a copy and comment be-fore the due date. (Keith Low has a new “Fire” job in DEC Kensington starting next week – Congratulations)

DEC are rolling out an online booking system for their campgrounds

It is intended to show a slide show of the 3 Bights trip at the March GM

On the 3 Bights trip, Tony Richards blew a self levelling rear strut. Sus-pension experts recommended simply replacing with a new strut to match, rather than installing heavier springs since they would make the around town ride harsher.

Peter Andruszkiw brought in a fabled “subagrate” for cooking over an open fire, donated by Martin Greenwood to the Club. An auction ensued and the grate was bought for $20 by John Cahill

Meeting Closed: at 8:40 pm
