The 21st century brings with it new challenges and op
tunities or civil and environmental engineers. It is cur
estimated that the human population will reach seven
by 2011. Thats a growth rate o about 1.3%, which re
sents a doubling time o 54 years. The reality is that w
becoming more crowded, more consuming, more po
more connected, and in many ways less diverse than a
time in history.
As a result, engineers o the uture must be educated
intelligent decisions that will protect and enhance the
o lie in new and innovative ways. They must also ma
communicate decisions in a proessional environmen
people rom both technical and nontechnical discipli
ucating engineers to be leaders in global eforts or su
able development, applying new appropriate techno
and leading socio-economic change represents the g
challenges aced by the engineering proession today
As engineers, we have an obligation to meet the basic

SUSTAINABILTY: A Call To ActionSustainability means diferent things to diferent people. Forome, it is how we live, or others, it is how we do business,
and or still others, it is a call to action. A popular deni-ion given by the World Commission on Environment and
Development describes sustainability as development thatmeets the needs o the present without compromising theability o uture generations to meet their own needs. Tisconcept has been receiving increased attention over the pastdecade, or signicant reasons, however, it is not a new idea.Te rapid rise in population means that there will be greatercompetition or increasingly scarce resources, while at theame time a diminished capacity to handle waste. We are
now at a point in time where more people reside in urbanareas rather than in rural ones, putting increasing pressureon municipal inrastructure around the world. In addition,global climate change poses multiple threats, requiring uso develop new ways to provide energy and to reduce our
carbon ootprint. All o this means that we need to trainengineers in new ways to respond to these new challenges.Te National Academy o Engineering (NAE) publicationTe Engineer of 2020addresses this issue. Although NAEargues that engineers o the uture must still posses strongechnical skills, there are several important new attributesuch as an emphasis on practical integrity, public service
and its place in society, creativity, and the ability to considerssues o a global scale.
Georgia ech and the School o Civil and Environ-mental Engineering (CEE) are committed to educationand research that make a positive impact on how peoplehink about and use the planets raw materials. We are also
working to incorporate sustainable development into educa-ion and business practices. According the 2010 Princeton
Review, Georgia ech is one o the nations leading universi-ies in sustainable development and green technologies, and
CEE contributes to this efort. Georgia ech continues to
emain a leader in sustainability, said President G.P. BudPeterson. We were an early adopter o the LEED standardor buildings, and have implemented numerous water con-ervation eforts resulting in substantial savings. In additiono winning many environmental awards or our eforts on
campus, we are working to make a diference throughouthe world. For example, the Georgia Water Resource
Institute (GWRI) is helping to shape local, state and na-tional policy. Georgia ech is committed to responsibleresource management.
At the oreront o Georgia echs eforts in sustainabilityis the Brook Byers Institute or Sustainable Systems (BBIS).BBIS is under the direction o CEE Hightower Chair andGeorgia Research Alliance Eminent ScholarJohn Crit-tenden. BBIS is premised on the grand challenge or ourspecies: how do we develop the part o the environmentthat is made or modied by humans or use in humanactivities, i.e., the human anthrosphere, to live within themeans o nature? In other words, humans must demand
no more resources than nature can provide and generateno more wastes than nature can assimilate. BISS embodiesGeorgia echs commitment to a sustainable and prosperousuture through a comprehensive and innovative systems-based approach to creating technological, management, andpolicy solutions to societal challenges in the 21st century. Inact, BBIS is really a center o centers that integrates institu-tions, objectives, and disciplines. Georgia echs Dr. GarySchuster stated We continue to take an interdisciplinaryapproach to learning, providing international experiences orour aculty and students and creating a culture o innova-tion and entrepreneurship, all while raming our values andprinciples around concepts o sustainability.
BBIS integrates education, research, and service inthe areas o engineering, science, management, comput-ing, architecture, and liberal arts. It is organized aroundthe intersecting programs o: Sustainable Energy Systems,Climate and Environmental Stewardship, Water, SustainableEnterprise, and Sustainable Urban Systems. Tese programsalign with the Grand Challenges dened by NAE: i) makesolar energy economical, ii) manage the nitrogen cycle, andiii) provide access to clean water.
Currently, Georgia ech has twenty-our centers engaged
in sustainable research that all under the BBIS umbrella,and CEE aculty and students are actively involved. Mostrecently, Georgia ech submitted a $40 million proposal tothe National Science Foundation to secure an EngineeringResearch Center (ERC) entitled, Urban Systems Un-der Stress: Multiscale Decision Support or Resilient andSustainable Inrastructure 2100 (UDS 2100). Proessors John Crittenden and Reginald DesRoches, UDS 2100 will create a deci-sion support tool or managing and understanding urban system and urbanizationprocesses to build more sustainable and resilient cities.
CEE ProessorAris P. Georgakakos serves as director o GWRI, an institutededicated to improving water resources management in Georgia, the U.S., and theworld through innovative research, education, technology transer, and inormationdissemination. Researchers develop inormation and modeling tools or sustainablewater resources planning and management as well as training and technology transerprograms. In Georgia, GWRI is collaborating with the Georgia Environmental Pro-tection Division to develop a sustainable water resources planning and managementramework or the state.
Another example is the Air Resources Engineering Center (AREC). AREC is di-
rected by CEE Georgia Power Distinguished Proessor o Environmental EngineeringArmistead Russell. Te center is an institute-wide catalyst or research in air qualityand its efects, air pollution and its control, as well as climate change and its regionalimpacts. CEE Associate Proessor Mike Bergen also works with AREC and is cur-rently studyinghow particles in the atmosphere directly modiy the surace radiationbalance o the Earth, which is critical to the planets climate.
Te Center or Geograph ic Inormation Sys tems (CGIS) is another a liated cen-ter made up o researchers rom several schools. CGIS serves as a leader and catalystor the advancement o GIS technology or academic institutions, private industry,and the public sector. CEE Associate ProessorJames sai works withCGIS and theGeorgia Department o ransportation (GDO). Dr. sai successully implementeda large-scale GIS-based pavement preservation and management system that helpsGDO efectively preserve and manage its 18,000-centerline miles o highway.
A ourth a liated cente r is the Center or Quality Growth and Regiona l Devel-opment (CQGRD), which helps society achieve a sustainable, equitable, superiorquality o lie through sound planning, policy, and design. CEE Proessor MichaelMyers and CEE Associate ProessorAdjo Amekudzi have worked with CQGRDDirector Catherine Ross and other researchers to develop a strategy or exploringthe potential o the megaregion as a value-added structure that will guide nationaltransportation policy and investment, while explicitly addressing the relationshipsamong demographic change, land resources, inrastructure investment, and econ-omic development.
Proessor Crittendon describes the importance o collaboration in research and
education. echnology that works well, but isnt green, will be no more acceptablethan technology that is green, but doesnt work well. We need products and servicesto be whole to perorm well at their primary intended unction, and to t well intothe larger socioeconomic and ecological contexts in which they belong. BBIS is atthe oreront o cross-disciplinary research and education in sustainability, bringingtogether industry, government, and academia to identiy challenges and research solu-tions or generations to come.

oday, more than 19% o the nations electricity is createding nuclear power. In Georgia alone, over 22% o the elec-city is generated by nuclear power plants. Nuclear powerll play a key role in helping the United States and the
orld not only reduce their dependence on ossil uel ando reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Currently, there areore than 30 new nuclear power plants under consideration
y utilities in the United States.
Since 1983, the School o Civil and Environmentalngineerings Computer-Aided Structural Engineering
CASE) Center directed by Proessors Leroy Emkin andenneth (Mac) Will has been providing the nuclear indus-y with the G SRUDL structural analysis and designtware. In the U.S. alone, more than eighteen utilities,ree government agencies, and twenty consultants use G
RUDL or the analysis and design o existing and utureuclear power plants.

By the year 2030, the popula-tion o the greater Atlantaregion is projected to growto close to seven millionpeople, an increase o 65%over the equivalent popula-tion in 2000. Tis will putsignicant pressures on Atlantas inrastructure includ-ing its transportation systems.It could also lead to large
increases in air pollution,carbon emissions, and waterand uel consumption. Glob-ally, projections point to
increased urbanization. While there was only one megacity (acity with a population greater than 10M) in 1950, today thereare twenty. By 2030, it is expected that two out o every threeindividuals will live in urban areas.
School o Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)PhD students Christy Jeon andJhotin Khistyalong withtheir advisor and Dr.Adjo Amekudzi have been working onseveral projects to incorporate sustainability into planningor transportation systems. In addition, the researchers havedeveloped tools to evaluate and assess progress towards systemsustainability. One o their goals has been to develop visualtools that are easy to use in practice by decision makers ingovernment and industry.
One o the important tools that Jeon and Amekudzihave developed is the sustainability diamond. Te toolallows decision makers to visualize sustainability across ourdimensions: economic sustainability, environmental sustain-ability, social sustainability, and transportation systems efec-tiveness. Decision makers that use this tool can easily iden-tiy dominant plans based on the prevailing priorities and
objectives. In addition, it allows or assessment o tradeofsalong the diferent sustainability dimensions. Finally, the toolis dynamic in that it reects changing sustainability prioritiesover time.
Te researchers have applied their tool to the AtlantaMetropolitan Region, and identied perormance measuresbased on sustainability issues and regional goals. In addition,they were able to evaluate proposed transportation and landuse alternatives.
Khisty and Amekudzi developed a visual tool callSustainability Footprint. Tis tool is used to help anthe impact that transportation and other inrastructusystems have on regional sustainable development. Fexample, transportation systems impact the quality othe population that they serve. It is important to unhow the quality o lie changes with the ecological olet by these systems in the orm o waste generation emissions) and resource usage (such as ossil uel contion. Te researchers have applied this tool to the AtChicago metropolitan areas. One o its real values is

sustainable inrastructure and alternative transportatining, the team has helped to bring these important cinto the classroom, at both the graduate and undergrlevel. At the undergraduate level, CEE 3000 (Civil ing Systems) introduces students to a sustainable engapproach or planning, design, implementation, opeand renewal o civil engineering systems. At the gradlevel, CEE 8813 (Inrastructure, Megacities, and SusDevelopment) is a problem-based learning course thintroduces methods or addressing inrastructure systin urban environments.

Biouel Energy Generationy Dr. Susan E. Burns and Dr. Kimberly E. Kurtis
Applications o biomass as a renewable uel source have recently gained interestas supplements to existing energy supplies. Biomass energy, commonly known as
biouel, derives rom living organisms (e.g., trees, switchgrass), and is an attractive
alternative to traditional uel sources due to the ability o living organisms to xCO2 rom atmospheric sources. Carbon dioxide xation results in carbon cycling,
and a zero net output o CO2 to the atmosphere. Additionally, biouels are renew-able energy sources, in contrast to ossil uels, making them attractive options or
long-term energy supplies.
Recently, Dr. Susan Burns and Dr. Kimberly Kurtis o the School o Civiland Environmental Engineering at Georgia ech, with support rom the Southern
Company, have initiated an investigation o the engineering properties o y ashproduced rom the burning o biomass-derived uel sources. Fly ash is the light
weight residual material resulting rom the combustion o a uel source, with coalcombustion being the most well known and prevalent source o y ash. Te ma-
terials resulting rom the high temperature combustion o uel are highly oxidized
and can be reactive components o a variety o construction materials like concrete.Combustion o biomass uels also produces a biomass-derived y ash, and the
engineering properties o this material are less well-dened when compared to theproperties o coal-derived y ash.
CEE doctoral students Chris Shearer and Nortey Yeboah are working under

Drs. Burns and Kurtis to quantiying the engineering proper-ties o biomass y ash which is produced when the biomass
is burned as the sole uel source, or when the biomass is
co-red with coal as the primary energy input. Biomassy ash is being characterized in terms o type o uel source
(hardwood versus sotwood), size o the biomass input (chipsversus whole tree), and geographical and environmental
characteristics o the biouel such as rainall and growing
temperature. Understanding o these properties will allowthe researchers to identiy trends in the undamental y ash
particle characteristics, including mineralogy, surace area,surace charge, particle size distribution, and carbon char-
acteristics that result rom the combustion o biomass andco-red biomass/coal.
Ultimately, Dr. Burns and Dr. Kurtis will examine appli-
cations or the productive reuse o the biouel-derived waste.Approximately 60% o the y ash (more than orty million
tons) currently produced as a by-product o electricity genera-tion in the U.S. is disposed in landlls, making reuse applica-
tions an especially appealing alternative to land disposal.

Tat year, I stayed in Atlanta ater my sophomore year at
eorgia ech to earn some cash rather t han go back home to south-
ntral Florida. Te intermittent odd jobs that I struggled to string
gether let me with time on my hands, some o which I spent at
y raternity house with the guys attending summer
sion. As I read the bike lane article in the paper, I thought
What a great idea! Cycling, which gave me my rst real sense o
edom and mobility, had always been important to me.
My raternity brother, Ron Currens, also rom south Florida,ggested that we go to the capitol the next Wednesday. As the
vernor made his way greeting everyone, Ron and I stepped up to
troduce ourselves. When the governor shook my hand, I told him
at i hed write a letter to Florida Governor Claude Kirk support-
g this bicycle lane set-aside legislation, that Id deliver it by bicycle.
ll clasping my hand he looked me straight in the eye or a split
cond, and then, with a grin, told both o us to wait in his o ce,
at he wanted to speak to us with his press secretary.
Fast orward a week to July 31, 1970 and Im back in the capitol
tunda, now being interviewed by Atlantas major radio, V and
print media outlets as I prepared to take the governors letter to
allahassee. Te owner o a local bike shop had provided me a
10-speed Schwinn road bike, along with a pump, patch kit, spare
tube, and one olded spare tire. In the rear deck bag, I had an extra
pair o cut-of jeans, two pair o socks and underwear, a couple o
tie-dyed t-shirts, and a blue bandana or a headband. I strapped a
big, clunky FM radio over the handlebar bag that held my canteen,
and the guys at the raternity tossed in $40 they had collected.
Governor Maddox and I rode around part o grounds outside
the capitol or the press, him on his handlebars and me alongside.
We stopped, he shook my hand, I ipped down my Rayban Avia-
tors, and I was of, riding away rom downtown at exactly noon.
I made it to Tomaston the rst night, where I stopped at the
police station to ask where I could nd a sae place to camp. Rec-
ognizing me rom the days news, they invited me in or a shower,
a meal, and a bed in an air-conditioned cell. Tey had a good time
taking mug shots and a picture with me and my bike in ront o
the entire night shit.Governor Maddox had alerted the Georgia State Patrol o my
planned route to allahassee, so occasionally a blue and gray cruiser
would come alongside and the o cer would ask rom beneath his
brim, You that boy carrying a letter rom the governor down to
allahassee? Yes, sir. You need anything? Well, I could use
some more water, I once replied, whereupon the o cer stopped and
produced a gallon jug rom his trunk and relled my canteen. We
chatted a bit as he escorted me a mile or so beore he waived good-
bye and moved on.

times, sufering minor cuts and bruises; hit by one o several beer
cans thrown at me; and regularly scared witless by tractor tr ailers
passing too close and too ast as I hugged perilously close to edge
o the pavement. I even spent one night under a concrete table at
a roadside park. But it wasnt all harsh. Once I asked an elderly
gentleman sitting on his porch somewhere along Georgias old
Highway 3 i I might ll my canteen rom his yard hydrant. As I
did, he recognized me rom the story that had run two days earlier
in his local paper and invited me to come sit on the porch and rest
a bit, out o the August heat. I did, grateully. Several owners o lo-
cal restaurants in small towns gave me lunch or dinner when I told
them what I was doing. I stayed hal-price in a small motel ater
my longest day o riding 140 miles! And one morning I crested a
hill just as the sun was breaking above the trees, gliding several miles
and simply enjoying the ride.
When I reached allahassee a local V station lmed my
approach up the hill in tra c along Appalachee Parkway to Floridas
capitol . I delivered the lett er to Governor Kirks o ce (he wasnt in
at the time); and two days later, I set of again, nally arriving at my
home our days later ater logging another 375 miles by mysel.
Ater I returned to Atlanta or school that all, the Georgia Parks
Department invited me to speak o my adventure at a number o
events in support o the pending legislation. Ultimately it passed in
both states, and soon new bike lanes with their distinctive marking
began to appear along highways, giving cyclists a little more room
and showing them a little more courtesy and recognition.
Te next summer, I worked on a construction crew in Atlanta,
building a hotel at 590 West Peachtree within site o echs
campus, and riding a bike six miles to work each day. Out with
some raternity brothers one weekend in July, a drunk driver ran a
red light at 70 miles per hour, plowing straight into the right side o
the car. I was sitting in the backseat o the car, and the accident let
me with internal injuries, a massive concussion, a broken jaw and
let cheekbone, and a right leg broken so badly that the doctors ac-
tually considered amputating it. Te end o that discussion resulted
in a 1/4 diameter pin drilled laterally across my tibia just below the
patella that supporting eighty pounds o sand attached via a pulley
system as I prayed or the bone to knit su ciently to allow me to
walk again.
Ater six weeks in traction, much o it with my jaw wired shut
rom two major operations to repair the damage, I let the hospital
more than sixty pounds lighter, hobbling on crutches with a big,
ugly boot-to-hip metal brace holding my right leg in alignment as it
continued to heal. I managed to get back in school that all, takinga minimum ull-time load, and scheduling at least an hour between
classes to give me time to poke across campus with a cane. Months
later, when I could walk unaided again, I got a bike to aid in my
rehabilitation. I still remember my rst tentative turns on the
cranks and how good it elt to be ree again.
Ill be 60 this year, 2010, which is the 40th anniversary o my
adventure. Cycling is still very important to me. Even now, I get a
joyous rush o enthusiasm when I rst clip into the pedals and make
the rst ew turns on a ride. Ater shopping around or a couple
o years, I nally bought a custom-built 62-cm rek Madone 5.2
several years ago during the companys our Sale in July

includes several miles o trails, a wetlands
area, and several outdoor classrooms.
In the submission o the project or
SEAOG Award consideration, the rms
stated that the driving orce behind t his
LEED Gold project was environmental edu-
cation and conservation. Tere are several
examples o how the Gwinnett project satis-
ed this mission. For example, a cascading
stream that serves as a water eature unc-
tions as a heat exchanger and is an integral
part o the buildings mechanical system.
Tis eature uses very clean reuse water rom
a nearby water treatment acility rather than
potable water, which saves approximately a
million gallons annually o potable water.
In addition, a 40,000 square oot vegetated
roo was installed to reduce storm water
runof. Te native plants used require no
irrigation. Pervious pavement is used
throughout the site in order to minimize
storm water runof. Any resulting storm

Te Georgia Chapter o Engineers without Borders is livelythis spring semester with multiple projects and events tobenet underdeveloped countries and bring much neededresources to those without. Members are traveling, research-ing, and donating to assist in this progression and the interna-tional community is benetting signicantly rom it.
Te big news right now is the Mungoangoa project inCameroon. Instead o partying in Cancun or hitting thesunny beaches o Miami this spring break, our EwB memberstraveled to the Arican village o Mungoangoa with acultyadvisor, Dr. Gleason, to work with the developing communitythere. Te primary efort or this project was to puriy the wa-ter and create a mechanism to pump it to the upper one-thirdo the hillside village. EwB also helped with trash collection,health education, and study ways to implement electricity,and research technology or cooking stove improvements.
Te main purpose o the spring break trip was to surveythe land so that a plan or the water pump can be designed.Te club also looked into the local skills and materialsavailable to implement the uture pump. EwB took on thisproject just one year ago and is already making signicantstrides towards improvements or the village.
EwB is also travelling to La Lima, Honduras or the endo the semester. Tis project was developed about ve yearsago at the orming o G s chapter o EwB. Te projectinterested EwB students because the current system o puriy-ing and distributing water to the community was developedin the 1940s when the village was a mere one-th o its sizetoday. Te community is now made up o more than 250households and the system currently in place has becomelargely insu cient. Goals o the project include establishing
better community relations, studying the current pumsystem, and contacting local pipe suppliers to preparpump implementation.
A particularly exciting project in terms o sustainis the solar latrine project headed up by Kevin Caravthe Georgia ech Research Institute. Te design collerom an outhouse and heats it to a high enough tempas to kill harmul bacteria so it can be used as ertilizproject was rst implemented in Bolivia several yearsis now being developed urther to reduce cost o maning and implementation, increase the durability o thproduct, and research urther the optimum temperatsanitizing the waste.

sentations on the clubs purpose and promoting intercommunity development as well as sustainability.

hen a toilet is ushed. We are ortunate to live in industrial-ed countries, as our daily lives are not impacted by the lackproper sanitation options. Yet, over one-third o the worldspulation does not have access to adequate sanitation toeet their daily needs.
Insu cient sanita tion can lead to poo r water quali ty,ublic health concerns, and gender disparity. Drinking waterurces contaminated with human excreta jeopardizes the
uality o the source. In 2000, the World Health Organiza-on estimated that 2.2 million people die annually romarrheal diseases that could be prevented by providing cleanater supplies and adequate sanitation. Te United Nationstimates that as o 2002, 2.6 billion people do not have ac-ss to adequate sanitation; they primarily live in developinguntries, mainly in Arica, Asia and Latin America. At thender level, women and girls are most impacted by the lacksanitation. By the time they reach puberty, girls typicallyop out o school as a result o the lack o adequate andivate sanitation options. Oten, women choose to deecatenight to escape harassment and assault concerns as well ashave some privacy.With eforts to halve this underserved population by
15, the United Nations established the Millennium De-lopment Goals. As o 2008, it appears that Latin Ameri-n and Asian countries are on target to increase sanitationverage to at least 50 percent o their regions; unortunately,e majority o countries in Sub-Sahara Arica are not. Tisallenge o providing adequate sanitation presents an oppor-nity or civil and environmental engineers.
Sanitation, as we know it, is a complex system ollection, treatment, and disposal o human waste. Tisonventional approach works in developed nations, as waterappropriately deemed wastewater is used as the primaryode o transportation. Combinations o excreta, industrialaste, and commercial waste are aggregated via wastewater
pipelines and transported to a acility where appropriate (andoten regulated) physical, biological, and c hemical treatmentsoccur. Following treatment, solids let are disposed o prop-erly and treated e uent ows to a rece iving body o wat er.
Several challenges exist when attempting to implementa conventional approach to sanitation in developingcountries. In most areas, water is too precious o a resourceto be used to transport human excreta. Oten times, opendeecation is the main orm o human excretion, making itlikely that cross -contamina tion into drinking e cient excre-tion, making it likely that cross-contamination into drinkingsources will occur. Financing and regulatory mechanismsneeded just dont exist in developing countries. Chemical orenergy needed or treatment may not be available on anadequate consistent basis. For these reasons, implementationso conventional approaches to sanitation in developing coun-tries oten ail. A more sustainable approach to sanitation indeveloping countries is needed.
From a sanitation approach, sustainable systems indeveloping countries are loosely dened. In general, systemsshould allot or exibility in scaling and nancing mecha-nisms. As waste is not treated aggregately, complex collec-tion and distribution systems are not necessary. Fundingmay come rom a variety o sources, including governments,
nonprot organizations, nancial institutions, and se l-pay.Since socio-political conditions and regulatory institutionsmay not be conducive to sanitation systems, determiningappropriate treatment technology can be di cult. Myresearch ocuses on the development o decision-support toolsthat will aide in sustainable sanitation system selection. Myhope is that providing this assistance will increase the imple-mentation success rate o sanitation systems. With only veyears remaining, achieving the Millennium DevelopmentGoal by 2015 is quite a loty goal. Providing mechanismsthat support e cient decision-making is one method to helpachieve this goal.

neering properties o biomass y ash to identiy characteristic trends in the undamental y ash
particle. Materials resulting rom the high temperature combustion o uel are highly oxidized
and can be reactive components o a variety o construction materials, such as concrete.
