The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) s tudent chapter was established in the fall of 2010. AMCP is a professional a s s o c i a t i o n c o m p r i s e d o f pharmac i s t s and pharmacy students who use the tools and techniques of managed care in the profession of pharmacy. The s t u d e n t c h ap t e r p rov i d e s members with resources and information about managed care careers and events.

The AMCP student chapter was co-founded by President Kevin Tse and Vice-President Gary Takher, under the guidance of diplomat Dr. Rodney Gedey and advisor Dr. Paul Nguyen. The following are AMCP’s student officers: President-Elect: Kristen Do; Vice-President Elect: Lisa Binsin; Secretary: Sheena Gurai; Treasurer: Thuy Bui; Historian: Andrea Richards; Publicist: Sonia Gill. The AMCP chapter has

organized several events over the past school year. The

chapter participated in the student organization club day, numerous fundraising efforts and

presented a professional non-tradit ional career night on campus. The non-traditional c a r e e r n i g h t s h o w c a s e d Pharmacist guest speakers who practice in less well known areas of pharmacy. In addition, AMCP student members participated in the AMCP 23rd Annual Meeting and Showcase conference held in Minneapolis, MN, April 27-30th 2011. Of particular interest was

AMCP’s annual Student P&T Competition. The chapter is currently working on producing its first annual school-wide P&T competition, which will be held during the fall semester of 2011.

California Northstate’s APhA chapter strongly believes in bringing the class of 2012, 2013, and the new 2014 t o ge t he r by s e t t i n g up opportunities for students to get involved. Club Day, which w a s h e l d o n T h u r s d ay, September 9th, gave the P1s a chance to be introduced to APhA. In addit ion, APhA continued to kick off the semester by hosting the Softball Tournament, which was a success last fall between the P1s and P2s. The event was a g r e a t t u r n o u t w i t h enthusiastic and energetic students eager to play!

APhA had a great turn out in October, the American Pharmacist Month! In addition to the successful softball t o u r n a m e n t , w e h a d a competition between each class to see who can raise the most money for the Heart Walk. The first year (P1) students made $2450.00 and the second year (P2) students came in second place of raising $1400.00.

Adding on to the walks, the Diabetes Walk was taken place on October 9th, 2010. APhA coordinated the event with SNPhA. The walk began at the State Capitol, Sacramento. Our booth was set up to spread diabetes awareness and

the importance to prevent it before it can occur.

The Mid-Year Regional Meeting (MRM) was in held in Ar i zona th i s yea r f rom October 29th to October 31st

of 2010. At the MRM,the students met, discussed, and voted on new policies that had b e e n a dd re s s e d a t t h e meeting. The National Annual Meeting was held in Seattle in March 2011 where the winner of the Patient Counseling Competition won a free trip, the officers, members and non-members attended.

In November, APhA had the Holiday Food and Clothing Drive that took place on campus throughout the entire month . The i t ems were donated to the Sacramento Food and Bank. The Starbucks Coffee Sale was held once a month for four months. APhA hosted a fundraising event, “Movie Night” that was held on campus for the victims in the Japan Earthquake that occurred on March 21st, 2011.

The Lexi-Comp Raffle was a hit on March 9th, 2011 w i th approx imate ly 100 students and a few faculty members at the event. Prizes such as a free membership with Lexi-Comp, an iTouch, and two tickets to a basketball game were given.

APhA continues to seek new ideas where the students can have opportunities to

demonstrate their talent while also setting up events where everyone can get involved as well.

The American and California Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP and CSHP, respectively) student chapters at California Northstate College of Pharmacy (CNCP) collaborated to host two successful events, a residency panel and a roundtable session. The residency panel took place on October 6th, 2010. Current California Pharmacy Residents provided informative tips and advice for students interested in applying for a residency on what to expect from a residency program and how to prepare for the application progress. On April 13th, 2011, the student chapters collaborated again and hosted a Health-System Pharmacist Roundtable session on campus to provide students with information on the different roles and clinical settings for pharmacists. We we re g r a t e f u l t o h ave pharmacists from local hospitals in Sacramento join us and share their career paths and answer any student questions.

CSHP and ASHP have also been working c lose ly with Pac ific Housing, Inc., a non-profit public health corporation, to provide health care services for their residents. On March 25, 2011, students conducted blood pressure screenings and medication reviews to the residents of the Renwick Square community in Elk Grove. The event was such a great success, A S H P a n d C S H P w i l l b e collaborating future events for Pacific Housing residents at different locations around the Sacramento area.

The CSHP 35th Annual meeting was held in San Francisco October 20 through 24th, 2010. The seminar was jam-packed with presentations, receptions, clinical competitions, and education courses. Ravinder Kaur and Crystal Truong, represented CNCP in the clinical competition. As third year students, Ravinder and Crystal took upon a case study about HIV, which was a topic not yet covered in their courses. Crystal described the experience as “…very challenging, but definitely humbling!” Of note, Rebekah Seale was selected as the winner of the Joseph C. Beckerman Award from many students applicants from all the California schools of pharmacy. The student leadership award was recognized along with other student runner up participants during the CSHP awards ceremony. In addition Josephine Quach and Marcus Wong represented CNCP as CSHP students delegates.

One of the very last events of the 2010 CSHP seminar was the quiz bowl. CNCP 3rd year and 2nd year students teamed up to test their knowledge against other California pharmacy school students. It was an exciting and fun filled event and although CNCP did not win the competition, next year students will be back to compete for another chance at the win!

In December 2010, 10 students attended the ASHP meeting in Anaheim, California along with 4 faculty members and the Dean. Teal H a r v e y a n d R e b e k a h S e a l represented CNCP as participants in the ASHP’s clinical competition and held their own against tough

competition of 4th year students from other schools.

On April 12th, 2011, CNCP CSHP student members were also given the opportunity to host the health fair at the front steps of the Capitol on CSHP Legislative Day. The health fair offered health information and free screening for cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose monitoring, poison prevention education and also offered Influenza Vaccinations.

All of the above events were huge successes due to all the hard work, dedication and collaborative efforts from the officers , members , volunteers, pharmacists and faculty preceptors.

About Us

Affiliated Through Pharmacy (ATP) is a multi-cultural club to promote a culturally aware student body at California North State College of Pharmacy. Our mission statement is to create a culturally competent community at CNCP through the exchange, interaction, and appreciation of the different cultures in our diverse setting. Our goal is to implement advocacy for the field of pharmacy while embracing all cultures in our society. Although ATP is a fairly new organization, the members have shown deep involvement in the community through Breast Cancer Walk, HPV informational session, Ice cream sale as well as Diabetes Walk. Since our mission is to create a culturally competent community at CNCP, ATP organized an event where our advisor, Dr. Tibebe Woldermariam gave a talk about Ethiopian culture. This semester we also held our first International World Street Fair event during lunch. Members/students of CNCP prepared various dishes from their cultures and each dish was sold for $1 or $2. This event was a great success due to the support provided by faculty, staff and student body of CNCP. ATP will continue to hold such events to raise cultural awareness and also to serve the community. All students of CNCP are highly encouraged to join ATP because it offers networking, leadership opportunity, building school spirit, community service as well as fun and memorable experiences.

New Cancer Organization at CNCP

Christine Guirgius, P3California Northstate College of Pharmacy students have gathered together and started yet another organization advocating cancer education. Our mission is to create awareness of debilitating cancers to the public through education and to implement projects that will increase the understanding that cancer is a sensit ive issue for cancer patients and their families. Future activities include smoking cessation to reduce the risk of lung cancer, tours of oncology wards, fundraising for and developing cancer research projects. We also hope to be able to provide compassion and support to cancer victims and their families.

Chris Fuller (CPhA President)

After being established and recognized as a chapter of CPhA a t C N C P l a s t y e a r, t h e organization continues to build its foundation and reevaluate its immediate and long term goals. CPhA is on the right track as the chapter has had the most involvement from students yet and has established its presence among the California schools of pharmacy. The main goal this year w a s t o b o o s t s t u d e n t participation at Outlook and Legislative Day. In order to accomplish this, CPhA held fundraisers to help defer some of the cost of attending conferences for students such as the recycling bins, license plate frame sales and a spaghetti feed. Recycling was a successful venture yielding much needed funding while helping the environment. The spaghetti feed offered the student body the opportunity to socialize outside of class and help raise money for students attending Outlook. These events would eventually help supplement the cost of participating in conferences such as Outlook and Legislative Day.

At Outlook 2011, CNCP had more than 70 students attending in Palm Springs. Not only was CNCP well represented, it also made a significant impact in all the student act iv i t ies and competitions. The CNCP chapter placed first in the 65 To Stay Alive

competition where schools competed in unusual tasks using household items in a timed race.

CNCP also took first place in the PFC Film Festival in which videos created by s tudents f rom different schools promoted medication safety. The student delegate panel and Quiz Bowl were other events that CNCP actively participated in during the conference. Outlook also provided the opportunity for students to learn about current issues affecting pharmacists and saw how policies take shape within the organization.

During Legislative Day, CNCP had 100% of the student body in attendance at the state capitol in Sacramento. Students had the oppor tunity to meet with legislators to have a direct impact on influencing decision makers on policies affecting the profession of pharmacy. Outside the Capitol, a

multi-school health fair was coordinated to showcase the services that pharmacists can offer including cholesterol, d i a b e t e s , b l o o d p re s s u re screening and medication safety review. CNCP students made up more than half of the total attendance Legislative Day which helped ra ise awareness as hundreds of white coats walked through downtown Sacramento.

Lastly, the CPhA-ASP chapter created and launched our official website. CPhA is progressing well and as the infrastructure of the organization grows, it is striving for more lofty goals in the future. We are half way towards our goal of raising enough money for iPads set up to do medication evaluations during health fairs which will help in our goal of raising awareness of Pharmacist capabilities and improving the health of the community.

Rush-Fall 2010

Monica Oh (ΚΨ Historian)

With school in session, Epsilon Iota chapter held various rush events that had been vigilantly planned throughout the past summer. First of all, Epsilon Iota effectively conducted its first annual stethoscope fundraiser before fall courses started. As anticipation of meeting new students reached its peak, the brothers of Epsilon Iota seized all the possible opportunities to meet the newest edition to CNCP. Beginning with an ice cream social that attracted almost the entire class of the first year students, Epsilon Iota successfully launched the first rush event of the year with the greatest turnout amongst a l l other o r g an i z a t i on s on c ampus . Following the ice cream social was the 2nd annual “Iron-chef compe t i t i on ” , whe re new students were given the chance to interact with the Epsilon Iota brothers as well as various P2s and P3s while making their own innovative and delicious pasta dishes. The third rush event, an info session BBQ with Grand Counselor Dr. Eric Gupta, was a grand success as well, and had a substantial turnout for those who were interested in seeking brotherhood with Kappa Psi.

Community Service

October and November turned out to be the busiest months of Epsilon Iota’s fall semester. The

chapter began the fall semester’s c o m m u n i t y s e r v i c e b y participating in the Jimmy Fund Cancer walk in

Boston as virtual walkers for our co-GCD Dr. Aaron Prince, who was there in person; for this event, all 48 brothers made donations to support and raise awareness in the fight against cancer. Epsilon Iota also participated in the annual Korean Health Fair organized by the International Sierra Lions Club on October 30th, 2010.

This was a substantial professional event which provided variety of healthcare services to the low-income and non-insured Korean population in the county of S a c r amen to. Some o f t he healthcare services that were provided included flu shots, blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening, cholesterol screening, chiropractry, EKG readings, and acupuncture. Epsilon Iota

brothers primarily served the community under the supervision of the pharmacist Dr. Aeyon Lee. The event was a big success with large number of participants. Upon conclusion of the event, E p s i l o n I o t a h a d b e e n congratulated with showing such professionalism and diligence which contributed to earning great reputation for CNCP.

Golf Tournament

On April 9th, 2011, Epsilon Iota successfully put together their first annual golf tournament at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The venue brought together pharmacists, consumers, and sponsors to help raise money for the Kappa Psi chapter. The chapter grossed over $10,000 from the event. A portion of profits were donated to the American Lung Association.

It was a big year for Phi Delta Chi, Gamma Iota chapter, as it carried out its first ever rush at the beginning of the school year. Rush inc luded events and activities to display what the professional pharmacy fraternity was about. Events included Dodge Ball-BQ, a study session with the brothers, Play-With-Your-Food-A-Thon, and a formal rush dinner. The highlight of rush would point to rush dinner which consisted of guest speakers Dean David Hawkins, Pharm.D, Dr. Soña Frausto, Pharm.D, MA, and Dr. Jennifer West, Pharm.D. Over 80 people including students and faculty from UOP and CNCP were in attendance to learn about or promote Phi Delta Chi. After rush came a 4 week pledging process in which the fraternity tested the commitment of individuals interested in b e com in g a b ro t he r t h a t semester. At the end of the fall semester, PDC initiated its first pledge class of 21 newly instated brothers. Spring semester was a productive one as well for PDC as projects and events came one after another. The first ever Top 200 Challenge kicked off the semester as PDC organized a s c h o o l w i d e t o u r n a m e n t e n c o u r a g i n g s t u d e n t s t o participate and compete against each other based on top 200 prescription medications for a prize of $150. The competition was extremely close, but in the end P2 students were placed as the champions beating out 15 other formidable teams. Phi Delta

Ch i a l so teamed up w i th Sacramento Food Bank to monitor blood pressure and administer free flu vaccinations at various health fa irs . These opportunities allowed students to practice vaccinations and for some it was their first time. The 2nd annual Multicultural Potluck was a huge success as the fraternity raised more than $350 for the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Effort. Over 40 different cultural dishes were offered for donors ranging from Vietnamese rice noodles to Egyptian grape l e a v e s . A l t h o u g h b e i n g professional is standard, brothers also know how to have fun. Social events such as potluck gatherings and paintball were organized to maintain the brotherhood spirit.

Fundraisers were a must in order to be able to keep up with all of the events planned. PDC was determined to keep their budget more than sufficient as launched an array of fundraisers including the sales of candy grams, custom blankets and portfolios, leis and bouquets at the white coat ceremony, and a b i l l i a rd s tournament. To maintain a close relationship with the neighboring chapter, PDC brothers at CNCP visited Stockton to assist UOP Alpha Psi with their initiation of

their pledges. Phi Delta Chi had an extremely busy and productive year and next year seems to be no different as they continue to remain a strong entity at CNCP.

The purpose of SNPhA (Student N a t i o n a l P h a r m a c e u t i c a l Association) is to plan, organize, coordinate and execute programs geared toward the improvement of the health, education, and social environment of the community.

Over the past year, our members have been very dedicated in serving the community in various ou t reach pro jec t s . SNPhA par t i c ipated in communi ty outreach projects such as the “Power to End Stroke” initiative on April 25th and October 21st, 2 0 0 9 . I n t h i s e v e n t , w e collaborated with the American Hear t Associat ion and the American Stroke Association and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) to provide blood pressure screening and stroke awareness education to hundreds of attendees with a diverse background within the greater Sacramento area.

On January of 2010, SNPhA members hosted a high school presentation to the 11th graders at the Sacramento Valley High School with the purpose of p ro m o t i n g t h e p h a r m a c y p r o f e s s i o n , t h e r o l e o f pharmacists, and our school.

On March of 2010, SNPhA members hosted our first annual blood and bone marrow donor dr i ve where many o f our students , sta f f , and faculty members par t ic ipated with donations. With the support we received from our school, the event was very successful and we

collected 18 pints of blood through 27 donors and registered 8 students into the bone marrow registry.

On March 27th and April 17th, 2010, we collaborated with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for our second annual blood pressure screening and stroke awareness education projects at the George Sim Community Center in the greater Sacramento area.

Our chapter is one of the 67 chapters nationwide. Our articles were published in the newsletter twice over the past few months F u r t h e r m o re , o u r f o r m e r president, Salina Tran won the SNPhA Leadership Scholarship Award.

During the fall 2010 semester, UAEM collaborated with San Jose State University (SJSU) students and medical professionals to prepare for a Global Medical Brigade (GMB) in Honduras. GMB is a nonprofit, student led organizat ion who str ive in improving the quality of life by way of providing sufficient healthcare to impoverished individuals in developing countries, all while preserving their culture.

Although preparing for Honduras was an arduous task, all of our efforts paid off in January 2011, as we provided doctor visits, dental procedures, pap smears, and supplied vital medicines in the pharmacy to over 300 Honduran patients.

Multiple fundraising events were held to fund this costly trip, yet this trip would not have been possible without the support of our family and friends, Cyndi Porter, Dr. Ofstad, Dr. Brazill, and most importantly, Dr. Kolli, as he has of fered his unwavering support throughout this whole process.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. Around 66% of the population live in poverty, and the standard of living index is ranked 116th out of 170

countries with an annual per capita income of $734.00 and an unemployment rate of 30%. Disease and malnutrition are the leading causes of death in children under 5 years old. Education, health care, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of Hondurans.

We spent roughly one week in H o n d u r a s ; o n e d ay i n a n orphanage, three days traveling to an underserved, rural area around the city of Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras), and one day touring a local city. At the orphanage, we realized that kids in Honduras were like kids anywhere, full of energy and life.

For three days, we set up a temporary clinic at a church where some patients endured a two hour walk just to receive proper medical care. Vitamins, analgesics, and antibiotics were among the most popular; however we had a variety of medicines ranging from antacids to anti-

parasitic medications. Each day we packed them in suitcases, drove r o u g h l y a n h o u r t o t h e community, and organized a make-shift pharmacy according to disease state, using benches as shelves. While the set up was entirely different from pharmacies in the US, with few to no restrictions (dogs walking around in the pharmacy), the work flow was surprisingly similar to any retail pharmacy.

Overall this experience was e x t r e m e l y r e w a r d i n g a n d humbling. We were definitely touched by all of the people we met, especially Javier, our security guard, who had terminal skin cancer. Taking 300mg (30 pills of prednisone 10mg in one sitting, without food), every other month because he couldn’t afford it otherwise, we realized how lucky we were to be Americans. With breathtaking views from the clinic, good food, and knowing that we were improving the lives of hundreds of Hondurans, we could not have asked for a better stay.

About Us

VNCARES (V ietnamese Cancer Awareness Research Education Society) was originally founded at University California-Davis to address the cancer disparities in the Vietnamese community 10 years ago. Here at CNCP, the mission is to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate health care services that focus on preventive care education, cancer awareness by referral for screenings and social support for the underserved communities.

CNCP VNCARES chapter became official in March 2011. VNCARES structure is comprised of four teams: publicity, fundraising, research and education, and recruitment. The publicity leader, Khoa Truong, is responsible for promoting the club within the school and the community. Doris Manford, the fundraising leader, helps the club to be sustainable in the short and long term. Anu Thinda and Cynthia Tran, the co-recruitment leaders, recruit participants, maintain relationship with community leaders, and locate sites for the education workshops. Finally, Kieu Nguyen and Pamela Wong, the co-education leaders, are responsible for the development and translation of education material in multiple languages, and facilitate education workshops.
