PO Box 596 Mandeville, LA 70470 985-809-5450 www.stsalt.org April 15, 2010 Thank you for taking time to consider sponsorship for the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day event produced by Seniors And Law enforcement Together (the St. Tammany SALT Council, Inc.). The SALT Council is a 501C3 non-profit corporation dedicated to assisting St. Tammany Senior Citizens to be safer and more secure in their everyday lives. This is accomplished through educational efforts that address crucial issues: Elder Abuse, ID Theft, Residential & Personal Security, Fire Safety, Driving Safety, Scams & Frauds, Emergency Preparedness, and other topics that may become timely and important. Elder Abuse is the most pressing of the issues facing safety of our elderly citizens today. Best estimates are that less than 5% of all Elder Abuse incidents are reported, and nationally that amounts to approximately three million reports annually. A recent 15-year study produced dramatic evidence of the lethality of Elder Abuse: the 1-year mortality rate of Elder Abuse victims is 181% higher than non-victims, and for those victims with pre-existing cardiac health issues, the 1-year mortality rate increased 400%. Simply put, Elder Abuse kills. June 15 th of each year is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and the SALT Council produces the only recognition of this important occurrence in Louisiana. As in the last three years, the Council will conduct a 1-day seminar for professionals in the legal, medical, home care, and social services professions. There will also be two public forums to help all citizens to be proactive in combating this enormous problem. The annual seminar has attracted professionals from all of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. The seminar, to be held at the Harbor Center in Slidell, is a costly proposition. If there is insufficient sponsorship, the attendees must pay a higher fee to attend, especially to qualify for Continuing Education credits. The higher individual costs adversely impact attendance reduce the spread of information. National estimates indicate that over ½ of all Elder Abuse includes financial exploitation, so this will be a featured topic of the seminar and the public forums. I hope to see significant attendance by employees from the financial services industry, including bank tellers, loan specialists, financial planners, bank security personnel, etc. I have attached a draft of the seminar schedule and a list of sponsorship levels for this event. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you or any other representative of your organization to discuss this in greater detail. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Ralph A.
