Introduction

Thank you for taking the time to learn about James Cook University Motorsport (JCU

Motorsport) and our involvement in Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia

(SAE-A) competition. This sponsorship proposal outlines the sponsorship packages available,

as well as the benefits that your organisation will receive by supporting the JCU motorsport

team. Also included is information about the JCU Motorsport and the Formula SAE-A

competition.

JCU Motorsport JCU Motorsport was formed in late 2005 by mechanical engineering students with a

common interest in cars and motorsport. Over the course of 2006 to 2009 the team

progressed and expanded with the valuable help of fellow James Cook University students

from the electrical engineering, marketing and accounting disciplines. In 2010 we have

expanded our membership and include more students from other disciplines looking to lift

the JCU FSAE vehicle to a competitive stage.

Over the course of its existence, JCU Motorsport has had the benefit of having many

enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and talented students as members of the team. With each

year, more and more groundwork has been laid by the preceding team in development of a

competitive vehicle including both generating processes and databases of information for

the use of future team members, and to cultivate relationships between JCU Motorsport

and the community.

JCU Motorsport in 2010

The main goal for JCU Motorsport in 2010 is to design and build a complete race car by the

end of the year, before beginning a testing and development program to prepare the car for

the 2011 Formula SAE-A competition. Other goals for the project include:

Establish an infrastructure for future James Cook University Engineering students to

build on.

Promote James Cook University and demonstrate its facilities and its students’

capabilities.

Establish on-going support relationships with local and national businesses.

Promote motorsport in Townsville and surrounding regions in North Queensland.

Create exposure for our sponsors and ourselves.

JCU Motorsport is an organization that relies on the support of the local community to

achieve its objectives. Our team is made up of enthusiastic and resourceful students who

are all working hard to produce an outstanding first entry and make James Cook University,

Townsville, and its sponsors respected names amongst the FSAE-A ranks

About the Car: Technical Specifications

What is Formula SAE?

Formula SAE is a competition for university students to design, construct and race a small

open-wheel style race car. It was originally developed in the USA by the Society of

Automotive Engineers (SAE), and has now been adopted by many countries, with the local

Australasian division (FSAE-A) commencing in year 2000.

Today, Formula SAE-A has become popular with engineering students from nearly all-

Australian universities, as well as students from universities from New Zealand, Japan,

Malaysia and India. It is also common to see European teams - especially from Denmark and

Germany - coming to the competition held in Melbourne every December.

Formula SAE-A teams consist entirely of engineering students, from designers through to

management. Financially, the teams rely on the generous support of private businesses and

companies.

The Cars

The main task for the students is to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete with a small

open-wheel style race car. Restrictions on the design of the race car are minimal so as to

challenge students’ knowledge, creativity, and imagination. Therefore, it is common to see

many different concepts and inventions created in response to these restrictions.

Brief Formula SAE-A Technical Specifications

The intended sales market is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Therefore, the car must have very high performance in the areas of acceleration, handling and braking. The car must also be low-cost (under $40,000), easy to maintain, and reliable. It is then judged on technical inspection, cost, presentation and engineering design, solo performance trials, and high performance track endurance.

Sponsorship Benefits

Why Sponsor JCU Motorsport?

Support Local Education

By sponsoring JCU Motorsport, you help undergraduate James Cook University students

develop their knowledge and understanding in their chosen degree. This is done by enabling

the students to gain real world experience in areas of:

Team Management: Running a motorsport team is similar to running a business. This

includes management of time, utilisation of resources, and events planning.

Communication: Develop students’ communication skills to team members,

sponsors, media and other professionalisms.

Design and Construction: Students apply their knowledge in designing a race car

while at the same time, gain knowledge in constructing their designs.

Employment Opportunities

With real world experience, students are better

prepared for the workforce, which in turn

improves their employment opportunities.

Sponsors of JCU Motorsport will have first hand

communication with the students through social

events, team presentations and at track outings.

This gives the opportunity for the students to

show their skills and build relationships with

potential employers.
