WHY A GENDER EQUALITY POLICY IN HEALTH AND ITS PLAN OF ACTION?

• The Americas has the greatest inequalities.

• Gender and Ethnic inequities are exacerbated by their interaction, and with poverty and exclusion to impact health.

• Gender and Ethnic inequities are those inequalities between men and women of our different populations in the health status, health care and health work that are unjust, unnecessary and avoidable.

The Gender Equality Policy

• Approved by Directing Council in 2005

• Applies to PAHO Secretariat and Member States

• Calls for Director to develop a Plan of Action for its implementation

• Consultation PAHO technical Offices and country Offices, Member States and Civil Society Organizations

Integration of Gender in the BWP 2010/11

Situation Analysis • 3 countries mentioned international commitments. None mentioned the

Gender Equality Policy• 4 countries and 2 areas dissagregated data by sex, only for specific

situations (HIV, TB, accidents, HR)• 5 countries and 2 areas included women’s and men’s health situation of

diverse populations, also in specific situations. Only JAM and GUT mentioned violence against women

Conclusions

• Most PASB staff know the Gender Equality Policy, few apply it throughout work/plan

• Most entities did not understand the gender marking system

• Most P&S of diseases and maternal health were marked with gender, however, it was not reflected on their composition or tasks
