great passion for dog grooming. At 19
with both NVQ1 and NVQ2 in animal
care and grooming components under
her belt Nikki continued to train and
now has the microchipping and manual
handling awards as well. Currently
Nikki has two trainees working with her
who are looking to pursue a career in
dog grooming,
ADNPR
This is Nikki's very own grooming parlour
for dogs, big and small, timid and fierce!
Nikki actually worked for Bark Avenue
Grooming for 5 years and as a result of
buying over the business in April 2009
changed the name to Barkingham Palace. Moving from Derriaghy to LaganView
will give Nikki's business more manoeuvre to enable the business to grow with
the help of the centre's new modern facilities and space. Barkingham Palace
will be based in Commercial Unit 1 as of 7th April 2010.
What exactly is Barkingham Palace?
Barkingham Palace will be offering all clients, old and new 20%, off all
dog grooming from 7th April to the end of the month. Nikki would like to
take this opportunity to thank all of her loyal customers over the past years
who have supported her and will continue to support her in her new
adventure @ LaganView.

It all starts before your baby is even born......
Being pregnant is very exciting! Counting downthe weeks to the birth....is it a boy or agirl....what size will my baby be.....and what is itdoing inside me...?Thanks to modern medicine, and the wonderfulscans now available, we are all familiar withpictures of babies in the womb. But there isanother very important area of baby developmentthat we cannot see, that of brain growth. Thereare times during your pregnancy when your baby'sbrain is making a quarter of a million neuronsevery minute and this is why pregnant women getso tired, there is so much work going on inside ofyou! This is one of the reasons why your diet andlifestyle choices are so important when you arepregnant, for example eating well and avoidingalcohol and other non prescribed drugs.
Talk to your Bump!.....
Hearing is one of the first senses to develop andyour baby can hear from around 16 weeks intoyour pregnancy. By the time you are 27 weekspregnant your baby will recognise your voice.Rubbing and massaging your Bump while talking toit will start the bonding process before your babyis even born!Listening to soothing music helps you relax whichwill in turn calm your baby. By listening tosoothing music regularly your baby will recognisethe calming effect and the good feelings that goalong with that. This may also help soothe andcalm your baby in the first few weeks after theyare born.

YOU NEED DEBT ADVICE......
New Debt Action NI Clinic bound for Laganview!LaganView are
pleased to be acting
as an outreach
centre for Advice NI in providing
premises to hold a fortnightly Debt
Advice NI Clinic beginning in
September 2010 which will operate
on a fortnightly basis initially. This
is a free, confidential and impartial
face-to-face advice service and is
available to anyone in the Old
Warren area as well as the
surrounding areas.
The service was established with
support from the Department of
Enterprise, Trade and Investment
and The Ulster Bank to help people
who are having difficulties
managing their money. It has been in
operation since November 2009 and
through it people are being helped to
cope with money worries and
difficulties with paying bills.
All types of people are using the
service - people who have been
made redundant, who have
experienced a bereavement, a
relationship breakdown, had a baby
or another change in their life that
has made it difficult to make ends
meet. People in employment,
students, retired people, and people
on benefits also use the service.
Advice NI, has 19 trained money
and debt advisors delivering the
service across NI and can provide
home-visits when necessary. The
advisors help people to:
identify their debts and if they
are actually liable for the debt,
identify any emergencies that
need dealt with,
identify where additional
money might be available, for
example through benefits and
tax credits
negotiate with the people they
owe money to
identify the best action that can
be taken to help reduce money
worries
The advisors do their best to help
people keep and/or stay in their
homes, help deal with any pending
court action and where appropriate
give representation at the courts.
After receiving debt advice from one
of Advice NI debt advisors, some
people have had their debt written
off or have had the interest frozen on
their debts. Others have been able to
agree affordable repayments or have
gone through bankruptcy.
Everyone’s situation is different and
the advisor will help anyone who
contacts the service to deal with their
debts in the way best suited for them.
To date 745 clients with a total of
£10,365,161.51 have used the
service.
Feedback from service users has
been extremely positive. See the
comments below:
‘If I had sorted things out myself, I
would have a massive loan which I
would not be able to repay.’
‘Before using the service, I was
really worried and embarrassed
about my debt. I am now making
affordable payments every month
and the stress and worry of debt is
gone.’
‘It was a life saver.’

Being a parent is an exciting journey, with lots of magical
times and challenges. There are some things that you could
think about that will make a difference to you and your
child.
• Your baby will love hearing your voice. Talk, read, sing to
them, even when they are really small
• You cant spoil your baby with too much love and attention.
Babies cry because they have wind, or they need to eat,
sleep, be soothed or changed, not because they are
demanding or spoilt.
• Some babies are more unsettled than others and may need
you to experiment with ways that settle them – you could try
taking them for a walk, rocking, soft music, gently patting
their back or singing softly to them.
• Your role as a parent is to love, teach and guide your child
through to adulthood. A big part of this is helping them to
explore their world, experimenting with touching, tasting,
listening and watching.
• This will mean babies will try to climb things, poke their
fingers where they can, taste anything that they come
across, put their hands in their food and generally explore.
This is good!
• You can manage all this exploring by
making sure small things that your baby
can choke on are put away, putting
precious things up high and making
sure hot things can’t be pulled off a
table or stove.
• Rest when you can. This might mean you have to ask
people not to visit for a while if you are getting really tired.
• Your friends and family will want to help. Ask them to take
baby for a walk so you can get a bit of sleep,or they can help
by making meals or hanging out the washing. They’ll all
want to hold the baby – but make sure they don’t interrupt
the routines you’re trying to set.
Being a new parent means you will be learning lots of new
things. Ask for help if you need it. There are people who can
help – for example Health Visitors,Surestart other parents.
Check out www.netmums.com which has parenting advice,
as well as local forums telling you whats happening near to
where you live.

Baby Signing -A Mother’s Story
As a mum of three, the one piece of advice Icould give to any new parent would be toconsider signing with your baby. I startedattending Sing and Sign classes when my eldestdaughter, Niamh, was just 6 months old. Afterhearing about it from a friend we decided to
try it. I was a little sceptical, but the classes turned out to be great fun. Classes aresmall, friendly and a great
social ground for parents and babies. Niamhenjoyed the music, and the songs made it easyto learn the signs.
Baby signing is entirely natural and instinctive,it’s not another language, it’s just a normal partof what parents and babies tend to doanyway….use lots of gestures!!
Through the Sing and Sign programme, Niamh learnt signs for a huge variety of words and phrases. Before she could speak, she was able to ask for things that she wanted, tell me how she was feeling, and even engagein conversation!! Her favourite signs were foranimals. At 10 months old, over breakfast onesummer morning, she told me she could hearthe birds singing!! She also loved to sign everyanimal she saw from the window of the car.
Signing gave me an insight into the real littleperson she was fast becoming, her thoughts, preferences and ideas long before I would havebeen able to share them if I’d waited until shecould talk clearly. She rarely becamefrustrated because she was able to make
herself understood. Now aged 6, Niamh is chatty and
confident with a very maturevocabulary. I believe this is due to this headstart in communication as a baby.
By the time my second daughter, Maegan, wasborn we started to sign without even thinkingabout it. She liked to talk about her feelingsmost of all. It was wonderful that the childrenwere able to understand each other throughgestures. It made my heart melt to see Maegan
ask Niamh or William for a hug, or sign sorry.
Maegan is now almost 4 years old, and has stopped signing in favour of talking non-stop!! Like Niamh, she is chatty and confident with incredible vocabulary, and theSing and Sign DVD’s are still amongst herfavourites.
Having discovered the benefits of baby signingfor myself, I was inspired to become a teacherof Sing and Sign to share this rewardingexperience with other families. I have beenteaching in Antrim, Ballymena andCarrickfergus since January 2010 and will beexpanding into Lisburn, Lurgan and Dungannonin January 2011.
“She’s had a real head start
“My husband says baby signing is
one of the mostrewarding things he’s
ever done”
“Instead of tantrums and guessing games she iscapable of letting me knowexactly what she wants”
“Our baby delights in being able to make
herself understood and it’s areal thrill being ableto understand her”
