The role of the athletic program is to support theoverall University mission. Intercollegiatecompetition has been an integral part of highereducation in America for more than a century. The University endorses the concept of “Athleticsas Education” described in the policy statementadopted by the American Council on Educationin 1984, which cites key contributions of athleticsto the individual, the institution, and society as awhole, as follows:
“Among these contribtuions are the developmentof discipline, teamwork and self-confidence ofindividuals who particpate, the improvment andsubstance of institutional reputations and morale, and the heightening of visibility that aids inrecruitment of students and financialcontributions.” The basic premise underlyingthese very positive contributions is that athleticsis, and must continue to be, an important part ofthe educational process.

During the 2006 fall season, Lynn swept the ITA Southeast RegionChampionships on both sides. The doubles pair of Dennis Riegraf and JulienCarsuzaa also won the ITA ‘Super Bowl' of Small College Tennis, a first forPerez, and won their first round match at the ITA National IndoorChampionships against the defending Division I champions from PepperdineUniversity. Carsuzaa would again win the Division II doubles title two years lateras a senior in 2008, teaming with sophomore Alessandro Sarra to achieve thefeat.
Along with the women's program's six national titles, Perez also boasts the thirdbest all-time record in NCAA Division II postseason tournament play for activeschools with a 56-12 (.823) record. Always clutch on the big stage, his teamshave made 13 consecutive championship appearances and 12 final fours sincebecoming a D-II institution in the 1997 season. Only traditional powerhousesArmstrong Atlantic and BYU-Hawaii have better winning percentages, but bothhave lost National Titles at the hands of Perez's Fighting Knights.
Also impressive was Perez's inclusion as Top Coach on the First 25 Years on theSSC's Women's Tennis Silver Anniversary Team. Lynn represented a league-best five players, including Top Player Monika Mastalirova, despite only beingin the conference for eight years.

2010 LYNN MEN’S TENNIS MEDIA GUIDE
On the men's side, Perez's squads have reached the postseason 11times since beginning NCAA play in 1997. The Knights' 25-10 (.714)overall championship record is tied for sixth best all-time and the Blueand White are 16-3 in the past four seasons, reaching the final matchboth 2006 and 2007.
An accomplished high school and collegiate baseball player inArizona, Perez moved to Florida in 1988 and joined the LU athleticsfamily as an assistant tennis coach. One season later he assumed thereigns of both the men's and women's program, putting into motionwhat has proved to be a tradition of success, excellence anddomination. His first women's national title came in 1993 as theKnights captured the NAIA National Championship. The teamwould win it all again at the NAIA level in 1995 and 1996 before theschool decided to move to the NCAA and eventually the SunshineState Conference.
The move up to the NCAA did little to slow down the success of thewomen's program as the Knights took home the hardware in 1997and 1998, both times at the expense of Armstrong Atlantic. Perezwon four national titles in succession, a feat normally reserved forcoaching legends. Lynn added another national title in 2001 with a 5-3 victory over BYU-Hawaii, the Seasiders' first Division II loss after a103-match winning streak. As a Division II program, the Knights alsohave four of runner-up finishes and 12 semifinals appearances.
For his efforts on the women's side, the 1987 University of Arizonapolitical science graduate was named NAIA National Coach of theYear in 1993, 1995 and 1996. The Sunshine State Conferencebestowed the same honor upon him in 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2006,2007 and most recently the 2008 season. The Palm Beach CountySports Hall of Fame named him their Coach of the Year in 2002,while the NAIA named him Coach of the Decade for the 90's.
Perez's coaching acumen isn't just confined to the women's programas his men's team has been a player on the national scene as well. The1993 NAIA District 25 Coach of the Year, Perez's teams finished inthe national top 10 every season from 1993-1997. Their success didn'tstop once LU decided to make the move to the NCAA ranks, as theKnights have finished in the Top-25 every season.
Michael Steven Perez was born on Sept. 17, 1965 in Newburgh, N.Y.He has been married to the former Melissa Nace since July of 1998.They are the proud parents of Madeline Elizabeth who was born onSept. 13, 2001. The Perez family currently resides in Lake Worth.Away from tennis, Perez is always working to lower his handicaparound the greens and also enjoys maintaining his garden andengaging in lively political discussions.
Assistant Coachyear after finishing one of the most
decorated men’s tennis careers at LynnUniversity, Julien Carsuzaa returns to Boca Ratonfor his first season as an assistant coach with theFighting Knights. Facilitieshe epicenter of the Fighting Knights Athletics Department, the Count & Countess deHoernle Sports and Cultural Center sits in the heart of the Lynn University campus.Completed in 1993, the center is the home court for the Lynn University volleyball and
men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lynn’s 18 National Championship banners hang proudlyfrom its rafters.
Housing four team locker rooms and one officials locker room, two athletic training rooms andlaundry facilities, the de Hoernle Center also contains offices for all of Lynn’s coaches andadministrators. During volleyball and basketball games fans can relax in the retractable chairbackseating on one side or sit close to the teams on the retractable bleachers. The combined seatingcapacity is 1,000.
The front lobby is home to the Michael & Julie Chadwick Wall of National Champions, a spacethat has plaques recognizing the Fighting Knights National Championship teams, and six trophycases which hold the many NAIA and NCAA individual and team honors of Lynn’s 11 programs. The de Hoernle Center is not just used for athletics; the gym floor is converted at the start of eachacademic year for Orientation and at each year's conclusion for Commencement.
A new addition was welcomed into lobby of the de Hoernle Center in 2008, the Athletic Hall ofFame. Eighteen former student-athletes and administrators are honored on the wall for theiraccomplishments while with the Blue and White.
The first basketball game held on the floor came on Dec. 28, 1993, as the LU women downedMichigan-Dearborn 99-72. The Knights men’s team played its first game on the floor two dayslater, besting Findlay 103-93 on Dec. 30, 1993. The first-ever Lynn volleyball game at de Hoernlewas on Sept. 12, 1996.
Home to the Fighting Knights’ outdoor sports, the McCusker Sports Complex is the site of thebaseball, softball, soccer and tennis teams at Lynn University and has been the host of SunshineState Conference and NCAA National and Regional Tournaments.
The only home Lynn soccer has ever known, the McCusker Sports Complex Field has seen itsshare of shining moments in Fighting Knights soccer history. With its plush Bermuda grass playingsurface, the field is nestled on the southwest corner of Lynn’s campus. Six national championshipteams have played on the soccer field formerly known as “the graveyard.”
Team benches and accommodations for the media, game staging personnel and administrators arelocated on one side of the field with two sets of covered bleachers and a concession stand on theother side. From 1996 to 1998, the field was the place to be to witness NCAA Division II NationalFinals.
The Lynn women took part in the 1996 NCAA championship game while the Fighting Knightsmen took on Cal State-Bakersfield in the 1997 title tilt. The Lynn women captured the 1998 finalon the field, downing Sonoma State 3-1 on Dec. 6, 1998. Recently the men’s soccer team defeatedLander 8-0 on Nov. 10, 2005 in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals, the second largest marginof victory in the program’s illustrious post-season history.
Lynn’s baseball field is located on the southeast corner of campus, sharing a border with MilitaryTrail and Potomac Road. Long home runs can be seen crossing mid-day traffic as the Blue andWhite play all of their games during the day. Recent facelifts to the field include a new scoreboardin right field with the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship banner, new Bermuda grassinfield and outfield and a crushed brick warning track. Dimensions are 315-right field, 355-rightcenter, 405-center field, 365-left center and 325-left field.
