Governor’s Merit Award inthe Humanities.
In a phone interview withthe Press and Dakotan, Leesaid he finds the Great PlainsWriters’ Tour one of the besttours he has seen.
“The opportunity to visitwith the community, visitwith the students at MountMarty and then to do a read-ing at the federal prison isjust very unique,” Lee said.
Following the events inYankton, Lee and Harrisonwill also visit other area col-leges.
“I just find the interactionwith the students inspiring,”Lee said.
Lee, who for many yearsvisited more than 50 schoolsa year while touring said thathe has cut down on his tour-ing schedule, but he is ap-pearing at the Mount Martyevent for the second time.
“I just really enjoy the set-up,” he said. “It helps thatJim (Reese) is such an ac-complished writer in his ownright. I don’t think people ofthe community there knowhow well respected he is in
the writer’s community.”Harrison is no less accom-
plished.Harrison’s poems have
been collected in “Story”(Logan House, 1995 & 1996),“In a River of Wind” (BridgeBurner’s, 2000), “Into theRiver Canyon at Dusk” (LoneWillow, 2005) and “Back inthe Animal Kingdom” (PinyonPublishing, 2011). In 2004, hewon the Western Reading Se-ries Editor’s Choice Awardfor poetry. His stories havebeen published in journalssuch as Nebraska Territory,Platte Valley Review and Pad-dlefish. He teaches Englishand Creative Writing atNortheast Community Col-lege in Norfolk, Neb., wherehe runs the Visiting WritersSeries.
Reese said his studentsare excited about the oppor-tunity to hear both authorsread and have an opportunityto work with them in theclassroom setting.
“They get very excited tosee them,” he said. “Having achance to see writers and getto meet them, that is whatmade me want to become awriter. They get very excitedto meet with them and talkwith them. Every year, thestudent’s work definitely im-proves after the writer’stour.”

not the validity of using pub-lic funds for campaign financ-ing. But that didn’t stopBruning from seeking to haveall of Nebraska’s campaign fi-nance law thrown out, argu-ing that the law’s publicfunding trigger “is not sever-able” from the rest of the law. Therefore, he argued, “the en-tire act must be found uncon-stitutional.”
Defenders of the Nebraskalaw responded that the law isa legitimate way to combatpolitical corruption. Lincolnattorney Jeffry Patterson, ar-gued to preserve the law, stat-ing in a brief before the stateSupreme Court that the lawprovides for more, not less, political speech by encourag-ing a candidate’s communica-tion with the electorate andfreeing the candidate from thepressures of fundraising.
The state attorney gen-eral “has not made a suffi-cient case that no set ofcircumstances exists underwhich the (state law) wouldbe valid,” Patterson said inhis brief. “To the contrary, itis clearly constitutionallypermissible to encouragevoluntary participation in ascheme to limit campaign ex-penditures, even if thescheme includes an induce-ment of access to publicfunding to make voluntaryparticipation the rationalchoice.”
Government watchdoggroup Common Cause Ne-braska and the League ofWomen Voters jointly filed abrief in support of the state’scampaign finance law.
