One of the top assistant coaches in the nation while at the University of Connecticut, Norries Wilson became Columbia’s Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football in December 2005. He is the 18th head coach of Columbia Football.

In 2009, Wilson led Columbia to a fourth-place finish in the Ivy League, the Lions’ best league finish in six years. Columbia also posted its most wins in six years. Eight Columbians were named to the All-Ivy League team, including defensive end Lou Miller, a unanimous first team selection, along with fellow first-teamers Austin Knowlin (wide receiver) and Jeff Adams (offensive lineman).

Wilson’s student-athletes have earned 20 All-Ivy League honors since 2006, including two Rookies of the Year and six first-team selections. Wilson, who served as offensive coordinator at UConn for four seasons, was one of five finalists for the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach in 2004, a season in which the Huskies led the Big East in both total and scoring offense. In 2003, he guided UConn’s offense that posted 477.5 yards per game, which ranked eighth in the nation. His personality is disarming and likable, but commands respect. He is quick-witted and jocular at times, and inspiring as an instructor of football and life. He is unfailingly supportive of each member of his team. “Norries Wilson is a dynamic leader with a full complement of leadership, coaching, management and communication skills who will take this program where we want to go,” says Dr. M. Dianne Murphy, Columbia’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education. “We are proud to have Coach Wilson on board as the head coach of the Lions.” In 2002, Wilson was promoted to the Huskies’ offensive coordinator after joining the UConn staff in 1999 as offensive line coach. He continued to work specifically with the Huskies’ centers and guards. In 2004, UConn defeated Toledo to win the Motor City Bowl. Three members of that team’s offense went on to sign National Football League contracts. Prior to the 2004 season, Wilson was one of 12 coaches selected to participate in the NCAA Expert Coaching Program. The program is designed to teach and reinforce various aspects of securing, managing and excelling in NCAA head coaching positions at the Division I-A level. Before UConn, Wilson spent four seasons at Bucknell. He was the Bison’s offensive line coach in 1995 and 1996 before a promotion to offensive coordinator in 1997 and 1998. He was also defensive coordinator at Livingstone College (1993), offensive line/tight ends coach at North Carolina Central (1991-92) and graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota (1989-90). Wilson was a captain and two-year starter for the Gophers. In 1985, the team defeated Clemson to win the Independence Bowl and competed in the Liberty Bowl vs. Tennessee the following year. He was a three-year letterwinner in football, and earned two letters and qualified for the NCAA Championships as a heavyweight in wrestling. He graduated from Minnesota in 1989 with a degree in psychology. In addition to his college coaching experience, Wilson has served minority coaching fellowships in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs (1992), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and the Indianapolis Colts (2000). A native of Markham Ill., where he attended Thornwood High School, Wilson is married to the former Brenda Marquis, who played forward on UConn’s first women’s basketball national championship team. The couple have three children: a son, Cecil, and two daughters, Trinity and Sahara.

2010 Columbia FootballNEW YORK - After an impressive drive to open the second half, Columbia took a 9-3 lead, but Fordham scored 13 straight points to reclaim the Liberty Cup, 16-9, in a game marked by opportunis-tic defenses.

Columbia’s defense was stout all day, adopting a bend, but no break mentality. That mentality was already evident in Fordham’s opening drive.

“Defense played well every drive, except for one,” said Norries Wilson, Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football. “On offense, we had an opportunity to win the game, but we gave that opportunity away.”

With the game tied at 3-3, Fordham received the open-ing kickoff in the second half and the Columbia defense pounced on an opportunity, causing the first turnover of the game. On a third and three from the Fordham 31, Wayne dropped a snap from the shotgun, Josh Martin leveled Wayne and Neil Schuster came in from his safety position to recov-er the fumble and set up excellent field position for the Lions.

Three plays later, Brackett found Mike Stephens in the corner of the end zone, as Stephens wrestled the ball away from a Fordham defender for the score, putting Columbia ahead 9-3. The ensuing extra point attempt was no good, keeping the Lions ahead by six.

On its next possession, Fordham again marched into Lion ter-ritory and got the ball within the Columbia 10-yard line but the Lions’ defense again stiffened. Patrick Murray was forced into an-other short field goal, booting a 22-yarrder to cut the Columbia lead to 9-6 midway through the third quarter.

Fordham’s next drive went into Columbia territory but Co-lumbia forced another turnover. The Lions’ defensive line forced Wayne to scramble and Josh Smith jarred the ball loose and Seyi Adebayo fell on the fumble to regain possession for Columbia.

Leading 9-6 to start the fourth quarter, Columbia’s offense took possession at its own one-yard line after a Fordham punt pinned the Lions deep in their own territory.

Fordham took advantage of the field position battle, getting the ball back at the Columbia 40. Martin and Wayne combined to rush for 35 yards to put Fordham at first and goal at the Columbia five-yard line.

But the Lions’ defense again came up big, stuffing the run as Fordham had a third and goal chance at the Columbia two. On a designed bootleg, Wayne tried to turn the corner but Matt Moret-to made a big stop, stopping Wayne at the four-yard line, setting up another short field goal for Murray, who tied the game at 9-9.

Fordham’s offense was quickly back on the field after Colum-bia went three and out, taking over at the Columbia 21 with 7:50 left in the game. The Rams converted a pair of third downs on the drive. The key play came at third and three from the Fordham 49.

Dropping back to pass, Wayne only saw covered receivers but was able to escape the pocket and dash to the sideline, picking

Game 1: fordham 16, Columbia 9up six yards to keep the drive alive. Six plays later, Wayne found Jason Caldwell for a 17-yard catch to the Columbia one-yard line. Darryl Whiting punched it in the end zone on the next play to put Fordham ahead, 16-9.

Needing a touchdown with less than five minutes left, Colum-bia started its final drive on its own 18. On third and nine from the 19, Brackett escaped tons of pressure and found Gutierrez streaking down the sideline for another big play of 39 yards into Fordham territory.

At the 42-yard line, Columbia moved to a fourth and one pos-session at the 33-yard line. On another Houdini-like effort, Brack-ett slinged a complete pass to Brian DeVeau, who made a diving grab to move the chains.

Two consecutive passes from Brackett to Mark Muston put the Lions at first and goal from the Fordham four-yard line. With the Lions knocking at the door with a minute left, the ensuring shot-gun snap bounced away from Brackett and Fordham controlled the ball, sealing the win in the ninth Liberty Cup.

2010 Columbia FootballGame 2: Columbia 24, Towson 10

A three-pronged rushing attack featuring senior Leon Ivery and sopho-mores Nick Gerst and Sean Brackett led Columbia to a 24-10 win over Towson on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.

The trio ran for 226 yards and a pair of second-half scores as the Lions controlled the line of scrimmage to the tune of a 224-87 advantage in rushing yardage. Brackett had 89 yards on the ground to lead Columbia, and added 157 yards and a touchdown through the air. Gerst had a career day, rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown, while Ivery averaged 8.0 yards per rush on eight attempts and also crossed the goal line.

Defensively, sophomore Josh Martin had a monster game at defensive end, recording three sacks and hurrying the quarterback on four other occasions. Senior Alex Gross led Columbia with 12 tackles.

“It was a good win. They went out and played hard. They didn’t try hard. They didn’t work hard. They went out and played hard every possession,” said Norries Wilson, Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football. “They did what the coaches asked them to do. They tried to eliminate bad plays. We still had some bad ones, but they reduced the bad plays. We made them play inside their 20 with our defense and special teams and it put us in position to win.”

Towson got on the board first midway through the second quarter when Nick Wallace hit a 28-yard field goal. Towson’s drive went 69 yards on 14 plays as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead.

Columbia answered with three consecutive first downs, including a 26-yard reception from Brackett to Mark Muston, who started for the injured captain Mike Stephens. Brackett hit Andrew Kennedy for a 16-yard gain to make it first and 10 from the Towson 19. On the ensuing play, Brackett rolled left, scrambled and then found Zack Kourouma for the touchdown. In his first collegiate game, Luke Eddy hit the extra point to make it 7-3 Columbia with 2:14 remaining in the second.

Columbia’s defense stifled Towson’s first possession of the second half with the help of an 11-yard sack by Martin, who lived in the Tigers’ backfield all game. Columbia took the momentum and added to the lead when the Lions took over at the Towson 35.

Leon Ivery busted down the right sideline for a gain of 38 yards and after two consecutive gains of 10, one by Brackett and one by Nathan Lenz, the Lions were first and goal from the five. Ivery took the inside handoff up the middle for the touchdown and Eddy’s PAT made it 14-3.

Each team traded dead-end drives when Towson got the ball on its own 38 with 5:59 left. Towson’s athletic quarterback, Chris Hart faked a handoff and hit a wide open Hakeem Moore, who ran 62 yards for the score to cut the Columbia lead to 14-10.

Columbia took nearly six minutes off the clock on the next drive. Ivery opened the drive with consecutive runs for a first down. After Brackett

was sacked for a loss of seven, the Lions battled back from second and 17 for a first down when Brackett kept middle for a gain of 25. Gerst threw a key block for Brackett to gain 14 yards, giving the Lions first and 10 at the Towson 14. Gerst scored his first collegiate touchdown when he started middle, cut right and jumped over a charging Towson player for the score. The Lions led 21-10 with 14:53 left.

Calvin Otis picked off Hart’s pass intended for Erron Banks to start the Lions final scoring drive of the game at its own nine-yard line.

Columbia continued to use the ground game to its advantage, but Brack-ett connected with Nico Gutierrez on a second and nine for a huge gain. Gutierrez dove to catch the 44-yard pass.

Eddy made a 37-yard field goal for the final 24-10 score.

Towson threatened to score, using five minutes of clock and marching down 80 yards. The Lions’ defensive line came up huge, with Martin registering two sacks after the Tigers were first and goal from the nine. Columbia took over on downs with three minutes left to play, sealing the victory.

“Hats off to Coach Wilson and his staff,” said Towson head coach Rob Ambrose. “His team played very hard and earned themselves a win.”

NEW YORK - Columbia scored 21 points in the second quarter as the Lions’ offense exploded for 528 total yards in a 42-14 vic-tory over Princeton to open the Ivy League football season.

Sophomore Sean Brackett completed 18 of 24 pass attempts for 273 yards and five touchdowns in the game, tying a Columbia record set by Paul Governali in 1942 and tied by John Witkows-ki vs. Dartmouth in 1982. Columbia’s 42 points were the most scored against Princeton in school history, and first time ever Co-lumbia has beaten Princeton in consecutive years.

Princeton’s Matt Zimmerman scored on a four-yard run with 10:45 left in the second quarter to make it 7-0. Princeton’s drive went 80 yards on 13 plays, spanning 3:30.

Columbia only trailed for four minutes. On the ensuing Princ-eton kickoff, Craig Hamilton had a 50-yard return to the Princeton 47. Brackett then went 3-3 on the drive, connecting with Andrew Kennedy and Nico Gutierrez before hitting Gutierrez with a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Columbia’s defense stalled Princeton after three first downs on the next Tiger possession and Columbia got the ball at the 20 after Joe Cloud’s touchback.

Columbia started its drive with just over three minutes re-maining in the second quarter and the combination of Brackett and Nick Gerst made quick work of the Tiger defense.

After Brackett hit Gutierrez for a six-yard gain and then kept for nine, Gerst busted through for a 41-yard run, taking the ball all the way down to the Princeton 24. Gerst rushed for another eight on the next play and then caught a 14-yard pass from Brackett down to the Princeton two. Brackett then found Clif Pope from two yards out for the touchdown. Columbia went 80 yards on seven plays over a span of just 2:35 to lead 14-7.

Itching to score, Princeton got called for a holding penalty af-ter the first play of the next drive. Columbia then got called for pass interference to give Princeton a first down on first and 20. On second and seven, Columbia’s Ross Morand forced a fumble and Ben Popeck recovered and ran it 26 yards before being forced out at the Princeton seven-yard line.

It took Brackett two plays to put the Lions up two scores. He hit Kennedy on second and goal for the score and Luke Eddy add-ed his third PAT to make it 21-7.

Princeton opened the second half with a three-and-out series and Columbia took over at the Princeton 48. Brackett found Ken-nedy yet again, this time for a 45-yard gain down to the Princeton three- yard line. Despite a false start penalty, Leon Ivery ran it in for the Lions’ fourth touchdown of the game.

Princeton managed just one first down on its next two drives, and started its third drive of the quarter on its own 40. Brackett connected with Kurt Williams for a 41-yard gain, taking Columbia to the Princeton 16. And two plays later, Brackett found Brian De-Veau for a 13-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 35-7. It was DeVeau’s first career touchdown.

Princeton put together a solid nine-play, 72-yard drive to score on a 31-yard pass from Tommy Wornham to Andrew Kerr as time wound down in the third.

Columbia led 35-14 with the ball on the Columbia 42 as the third quarter expired.

Brackett found Kennedy again for a 40-yard touchdown pass with 13:20 left in the game for the final 42-14 score.

Columbia received career days from Kennedy, who had seven catches and 148 yards, and Gerst, who carried 17 times for 124 yards.

Alex Gross led all players for the third consecutive games with 13 tackles. Ryan Murphy added nine tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss. Adam Merher also added nine tackles with one for a loss.

2010 Columbia FootballGame 4: Columbia 42, Lafayette 28

NEW YORK – Sophomore quarterback Sean Brackett accounted for 284 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as Columbia won its third straight game, 42-28, over Lafayette at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Brack-ett went 15-for-20 for 179 yards and three touchdowns through the air, and rushed for 105 yards and a score on the ground as the Lions move to 3-1 on the season.

Senior Alex Gross had 11 tackles to once again lead the Colum-bia defense, and had a big interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. With the Leopards leading 10-7 and driving in Lion territory, Gross stepped in front of a pass by Lafayette’s Ryan O’Neil and rumbled 69 yards to swing momentum into Columbia’s favor.

After Lafayette got on the board first on a 32-yard field goal by Davis Rodriguez, Columbia reponded with a touchdown after gaining positive field position at its own 42-yard line. Brackett capped the drive by passing to a wide open Kurt Williams down the near sideline for a 28-yard strike to put Columbia ahead 7-3.

Lafayette answered quickly, when Ryan O’Neil found Kyle Hayes on a play-action pass to put the Leopards ahead, 10-7 near the end of the first quarter.

Lafayette appeared poised to score again on its next drive but Gross stepped in front of Lafayette tight end Kevin Doty and streaked down the far sideline for a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown to put Columbia ahead 14-10.

Despite the turnover, O’Neil continued to attack through the air, capping an eight-play drive by finding running back Jerome Rudolph for a 24-yard touchdown as the score seesawed back to Lafayette’s favor, 17-14.

Field position swung the game again, as Craig Hamilton re-turned the kickoff 54 yards into Lafayette territory, to the Leop-ards’ 36-yard line.

Columbia gradually moved the ball toward the goal line, ul-timately scoring when a scrambling Brackett threaded a pass through a pair of defenders to Zack Kourouma to give the Lions a 21-17 halftime advantage.

It took Columbia just three minutes into the third to tack an-other score on the board as Hamilton returned the opening drive 38 yards to the Columbia 43. After five consecutive rushes, Brack-ett found Kennedy for a 29-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-17 after Luke Eddy’s PAT.

Lafayette added a field goal after Columbia stalled a 57-yard drive at the Columbia nine, cutting the lead to eight with just un-der eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Columbia answered with yet another score, when Columbia’s combination of Brakett, Ivery, Nathan Lenz and Kourouma com-bined for 65 yards rushing before Brackett kept an option left for a four-yard touchdown. Columbia held Lafayette to a three-and-out and led 35-20 when Lafayette started its drive with 41 sec-onds remaining in the third.

Lafayette picked up a quick first down when Alan Elder rushed up the middle for 12. On third and four at the Lafayette 32, Gross laid a big hit on Mitchell Bennett after a short pass, and Josh Mar-tin recovered Bennett’s fumble and returned the ball deep into Lafayette territory, but a holding penalty on the play put Columbia back on the 41-yard line with 13:55 left to play.

After two first downs, a holding penalty pushed Columbia back to the 39 but Ivery gained eight on first and 20, and Brackett found Kourouma on a screen for a gain of 24. Ivery scored on a one-yard run, capping Columbia’s six-play 41-yard drive, to make it 42-20 with just under 11 minutes to play.

Lafayette added a touchdown with 3:56 remaining, when Jerome Ruldolph took the snap, flipped to Ryan O’Neil and hit Mitchell Bennett deep for a 69-yard gain on the flea flicker. The Leopards went 74 yards on three plays in 38 seconds and then made the two-point conversion to make it 42-28.

Columbia had 239 yards rushing to Lafayette’s 150. Hamilton totaled 135 yards in kick-off return yardage. Neil Schuster added 10 tackles on defense for Columbia.

2010 Columbia FootballGame 5: Penn 27, Columbia 13

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Penn’s multi-faceted rushing attack com-

piled 281 yards on the ground as the Quakers defeated Columbia,

27-13 at Franklin Field. Penn held Columbia to just 44 yards rush-

ing, but Lions’ quarterback Sean Brackett went 18-33-0 in the air

for 240 yards and a touchdown.

Penn scored five minutes into the game on a seven-yard run

by Billy Ragone. Columbia answered with a drive of its own, but

the 12-play, 59-yard drive was stalled at the Penn 17 and first-

year Luke Eddy put the Lions up on the board with a 34-yard field

goal.

Penn’s next drive was a three and out. Nick Mistretta, who led

all players with 10 tackles on the afternoon, coupled with Matt

Stotler for a big stop on second down and eight. Matt Moretto

was charging Ragone on the next play, but Ragone tripped. Penn

was forced to punt.

Columbia started its second drive with 2:05 left to play in the

first. The Lions picked up a first down on third and one from their

own 35. On first and 10 from the 37, Brackett was sacked for a loss

of 12 by Brian Wing, which forced a fumble. Penn’s Drew Gold-

smith recovered and ran the ball in 25 yards for the score. Penn

led 14-3 after Andrew Samson’s extra point was good.

The teams traded three and out series, including a fake punt

attempt by Penn on fourth and six from the Penn 36. On Penn’s

second drive of the quarter, Adam Mehrer forced Brandon Co-

lavita to fumble and Neil Schuster recovered. Columbia took over

at the Penn 33, but was unable to capitalize on the prime field

position.

Penn scored on its next drive, an 11-play, 71-yard possession

that lasted just over five minutes. The Quakers threw the ball just

one time during the drive - a 28-yard pass, but rushed 11 times for

43 yards. There was a fumbled snap on the PAT, which kept the

score 20-10 Penn at the break.

Columbia cut the lead to 20-10 in the third quarter when Sean

Brackett found Andrew Kennedy on a 57-yard pass play, but Penn

answered with a touchdown on the very next drive to thwart the

rally.

Trailing 27-10, Eddy hit a 48-yard field goal, the longest Co-

lumbia field goal in nearly three years, to make it 27-13.

Andrew Kennedy had 107 yards receiving, marking just his

second career 100-yard game. Nico Gutierrez had 57 yards in the

loss. Mehrer and Alex Gross had nine tackles each.

Columbia had 44 yards rushing to Penn’s 281, conversely Co-

lumbia had 240 yards passing to Penn’s 45.

Penn moves to 4-1 and 2-0 in the Ivy League with the win and

Columbia’s record now stands at 3-2 and 1-1 in the Ivy League

after its first loss in the last four games.

2010 Columbia FootballGame 6: Dartmouth 24, Columbia 21

Columbia led 21-17 midway through the fourth quarter but Dartmouth embarked on a 14-play, game-ending drive when the Big Green converted a pair of third downs and one fourth down to keep the chains moving. Nick Schwieger’s second touchdown of the day, a one-yard plunge with 2:28 left in the game, put Dart-mouth ahead for good.

After Columbia led 7-3 at halftime, Dartmouth’s two third quarter touchdowns gave the Big Green a 17-7 advantage head-ing into the fourth quarter.

The Big Green put together a pair of eight-yard plays after ben-eficial field position. A short field midway through the third gave Dartmouth the ball at its own 49-yard line. Dartmouth drove in-side the Columbia 10-yard line, where the Lions defense stiffened, causing a fourth-and-goal situation at the one-yard line.

Schwieger scored his first of the day on a one-yard dive that gave the Big Green their first lead of the game, 10-7.

After Dartmouth caused Columbia to go three and out, the Big Green regained possession at their own 41. Dartmouth quarter-back Connor Kempe completed passes to four different receivers on the drive, capping it with an eight-yard toss to Mitch Apraha-mian that ultimately gave Dartmouth a 17-7 lead going into the final quarter.

Dartmouth was primed to put the game away early in the fourth quarter, but Columbia’s Josh Smith forced a fumble that swung the momentum of the game. On a third and six from the Columbia 15-yard line, Kempe rolled left, lost the ball and Josh Martin pounced on the fumble to give Columbia possession again.

Columbia scored on a seven-play, 70-yard drive after the turn-over to get the Lions within three, at 17-14, and quickly recov-ered another Dartmouth fumble in the Columbia end. Dartmouth forced a fumble on the next Columbia drive, but the game swung again when the Lions recovered a Dartmouth fumble.

Kalasi Huggins laid a big hit on Schwieger that caused him to lose the ball and Martin recovered his second fumble of the day on the Dartmouth 29-yard line with less than eight minutes re-maining.

After the third Dartmouth turnover of the quarter, Columbia started the drive as Sean Brackett hit Nick Gerst with a swing pass for seven yards. After an incomplete pass, Brackett scrambled for a first down. On the next play, a key pass interference call on Dartmouth placed the ball at the two-yard line. On the next play, Nathan Lenz sprung free into the left flat and caught Brackett’s pass in the end zone to give the Lions a 21-17 advantage.

On its final drive, Dartmouth a pair of third downs and a fourth down play to get the ball deep in Columbia territory. Dartmouth eventually took the ball to the Columbia two and after Schwieger was stopped for a one-yard gain on first down, his second-down carry reached the end zone as the Big Green went ahead, 24-21 after the extra point.

Columbia had a chance with two and a half minutes remain-ing and the Lions converted a pair of first downs that moved the ball to the Columbia 35. However, the Lions’ drive stalled on its own 43 as Dartmouth notched its first Ivy League win of the season.

Alex Gross finished with a game-high 16 tackles, including 10 solo stops, along with a pass breakup. For his efforts, he was named the John Toner Columbia Football Homecoming Player of the Game.

Brackett threw for 188 yards and a score while his counter-part Kempe passed for 235 yards and a touchdown. Schwieger finished with 124 yards on 32 carries and a pair of touchdowns.
