Recieving Yards 2384 Bill Reggio (’81-83) 2207 Don Lewis (’81-83) 1920 Austin Knowlin (2006-08) 1588 Travis Chmelka (2000-03) 1529 Dan Upperco (’82-84) 1518 David Ramierz (’93-96)

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILSOffensively, the Blue Devils are led by senior running back James Mallory. The 5-foot-10 ball carrier rushed for 1,520 yards in 2008 and has three rushing touchdowns through two contests this season. The majority of the snaps at quarterback have been taken this year by senior Hunter Wanket, who has compiled 294 yards and two touchdowns through the air. On the other side of the ball, junior linebacker Jeff Marino has totaled a team-high 16 tackles this season, including 14 against nationally-ranked William & Mary. Junior defensive back Alondre Rush, who was a first team All-Northeast Conference selection last season, has 12 tackles and a pair of pass breakups, while fellow first-teamer Ray Saunders is another player to watch on the defensive front for CCSU.

WITH PURPOSEColumbia senior wide receiver Austin Knowlin needs just 393 all-purpose yards to crack the top 14 career total in Ivy League history. He has amassed 3,379 all-purpose yards, including 137 yards in the Lions’ win over Fordham. Knowlin also needs just 17 receptions to become Columbia’s All-Time Leader in pass receptions, surpassing Don Lewis ’84, and a record that has stood since the 1983 season.

AK ATTACKAustin Knowlin and Andrew Kennedy combined for 220 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. Kennedy had 83 yards receiving, while Knowlin totaled 137 yards rushing, receiving, and on all returns.

SENSATIONAL SIX LEAD THE WAYIt is only fitting that on Columbia’s largest team in recent years, they have the most captains in school history - a cool half dozen. Seniors M.A. Olawale, Austin Knowlin, Taylor Joseph, John Seiler, Lou Miller and junior Alex Gross were all chosen as captains for the 2009 season.

fAMILIAR fOEOn opening days, Columbia has played only three teams more frequently than Fordham (this is the tenth opening-game meeting). Columbia has played Harvard 27 times and Brown and Rutgers tied with 11 meetings each for season-openers. Columbia has also faced Lafayette eight times in an opening game.

fIRST Of ALLColumbia is 63-50-6 all-time in season openers. The Lions are 2-2 in openers under Coach Wilson.

PRESEASON HONORSAustin Knowlin and Lou Miller were named to preseason All-America teams by different publications. Knowlin was named to the The Sports Network (TSN) Preseason FCS All-America team (first team), College Sporting News Preseason All-America Team (second team) and the Consensus Draft Services All-America Team (second team). Miller earned a spot on the Consensus Draft Services second team.

AcKnowledging THE RECORD BOOKSAustin Knowlin needs just 17 receptions to become Columbia’s all-time leader in pass receptions and just 465 yards to be Columbia’s all-time leading receiver.Knowlin currently stands third all-time, needing 288 yards to move to second, surpassing Don Lewis and a record that has stood since 1983.

If you were to ask him, Norries Wilson’s fam-ily extends far past his wife, son and daughter. His family includes the 100-plus members of the

Columbia Football team and to his student-athletes, Wilson can be summed up in a simple phrase. “He’s the man,” one returning player noted. And “the man” plans to win. One of the top assistant coaches in the nation while at the University of Connecticut, Wilson became Columbia’s Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football in December 2005. He is the 18th head coach of Columbia Football.

In his first season, he led Columbia to its best record in a decade and boasted the 15th ranked defense in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Wil-son student-athletes have earned 11 All-Ivy League honors since 2006, including two Rookie of the Years and three first-team players. Wilson, who served as offensive coordinator at UCo-nn for four seasons, was one of five finalists for the Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach in 2004, a season in which the Huskies led the Big East in both total and scoring offense. In 2003, he guided UConn’s offense that posted 477.5 yards per game, which ranked eighth in the na-tion. His personality is disarming and likable, but commands respect. He is quick-witted and jocular at times, and inspiring as an instructor of football and life. He is unfailingly supportive of each member of his team.

In 2002, Wilson was promoted to the Huskies’ offensive coordinator after joining the UConn staff in 1999 as offensive line coach. He continued to work specifically with the Huskies’ centers and guards. In 2004, UConn de-

feated Toledo to win the Motor City Bowl. Three members of that team’s offense went on to sign National Football League contracts.

Prior to the 2004 season, Wilson was one of 12 coaches selected to participate in the NCAA Expert Coaching Pro-gram. The program is designed to teach and reinforce various aspects of securing, managing and excelling in NCAA head coaching positions at the Division I-A level. Before UConn, Wilson spent four seasons at Bucknell. He was the Bison’s offensive line coach in 1995 and 1996 before a promotion to offensive coordinator in 1997 and 1998. He was also defensive coordinator at Livingstone College (1993), offensive line/tight ends coach at North Carolina Central (1991-92) and graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota (1989-90). Wilson was a captain and two-year starter for the Go-phers. In 1985, the team defeated Clemson to win the Independence Bowl and competed in the Liberty Bowl vs. Tennessee the following year. He was a three-year letter-winner in football, and earned two letters and qualified for the NCAA Championships as a heavyweight in wrestling. He graduated from Minnesota in 1989 with a degree in psychology. In addition to his college coaching experience, Wilson has

served minority coaching fellowships in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs (1992), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1995) and the Indianapolis Colts (2000). A native of Markham Ill., where he attended Thornwood High School, Wilson is married to the former Brenda Marquis, who played forward on UConn’s first women’s basketball national championship team. The couple have two children: a son, Cecil, born February 17, 2005, and a daughter, Trinity, born October 9, 2006.

GAME 1: Columbia 40, fordham 28BRONX, N.Y. - With Columbia leading 34-28 late in the fourth quarter, Columbia senior cornerback Jared Morine returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory for the Lions, 40-28, as Columbia captured its first win of the season at Fordham, regaining the Liberty Cup.

In a true team effort, Columbia’s offense put up solid numbers and controlled the time of possession, while the Lions’ defense stepped up throughout and sealed the game in the final quarter.

With time winding down in the fourth quarter, Fordham got the ball on its own 18 with 5:19 left on the clock. Rams quarterback John Skelton, rated the seventh best quarterback in the 2010 NFL draft class, completed an 11-yard pass to Asa Lucas. Xavier Martin rushed for five yards to make it second and five from the 34-yard line, when Morine intercepted a pass on the ensuing play and ran it back 36 yards for the touchdown.

After a 12-yard return by Fordham on Columbia’s kickoff, Skelton connected with Patrick Miller for 11 yards to the Fordham 42 and then connected with Lucas again for a 30-yard gain down to the Columbia 28. Skelton kept for 15 yards, taking the Rams to the Columbia 13. On third and six from the Co-lumbia nine, senior Andy Shalbrack intercepted Skelton’s pass in the endzone to all but seal the win.

The game was an offensive battle from the opening kickoff. Columbia efficiently marched down the field on the first possession of the game, using almost six minutes of clock, going 38 yards on 11 plays before a missed field goal attempt ended the drive. Fordham needed just three plays to take a 7-0 lead when Skelton connected with Lucas for a 70-yard touchdown pass.

After each team had a possession, Columbia went to work, on its third drive of the game, by making use of a short punt and nine-yard return by Austin Knowlin, starting the drive on the Fordham 41. Columbia quarterback M.A. Olawale hit Andrew Kennedy for a 38-yard pass reception, putting the Lions on the Fordham three. Olawale then kept for the touchdown, while first-year kicker Gregory Guttas’s PAT was good to knot the game at 7-7.

Fordham went four plays on the next possession, but Marc Holloway and Alex Gross stopped Darryl Whiting on fourth and one, and the Lions took over on the Columbia 49 on downs.

Ray Rangel and Olawale rushed for 18 yards to the Fordham 32 before the quarter ran out, and the Lions opened the second period with a third and two play. Olawale flicked the option to Knowlin for 10 yards for the first down and then connected with Rangel for a 17-yard gain on the next play to put the Lions on the Ram five-yard line. Olawale gained four yards to the one on a keep, but failed to score on the next two plays from the one. On fourth and goal, from what looked liked inches, Rangel powered in for the score. Guttas missed the extra point and Columbia led 13-7.

Skelton led his team 74 yards on seven plays on the next drive, including two 20-plus-yard passes and a touchdown completion of eight yards to his brother Stephen, giving Fordham a one-point lead, 14-13.

Olawale answered with an impressive drive of his own. After a facemask penalty was assessed to Fordham on the kickoff, the Lions got 15 additional yards to Craig Hamilton’s 24-yard return, making it first and 10 from the Fordham 42. Columbia got hit with a false start, making it first and 15 from the 47, but Rangel rushed for 14 yards to the 33-yard line, and Olawale kept for 28 yards to the five-yard line on the next two plays. Olawale rushed for the five yards to score his second touchdown of the game, giving the Lions a 20-14 lead and Columbia did not trail again.

Columbia’s defense came up big as the half wound down, first with Gross intercepting a pass and returning it 15 yards to the Fordham six. Olawale found Kennedy for a nine-yard touchdown pass to put the Lions up 27-14.

Trailing 27-21, Fordham got the ball on its own 39-yard line with 32 seconds left in the half. Skelton got the ball down to the Columbia 43 and found Brad Pierre for 19 yards and a Columbia roughing the passer penalty got Fordham down to the Columbia 12. With just three seconds left, Fordham had a field goal blocked to end the half.

The Lions scored 40 points for the first time since 2000 and Rangel ran for a career-best 118 yards on 26 carries and a touchdown.

Olawale completed 13 of 23 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for two scores, earning game Most Valuable Player honors for Columbia. The MVP tro-phies were sponsored by the NYPD Finest and FDNY Bravest football teams who had members in attendance. Skelton earned Fordham’s MVP honor, throwing for 383 yards, going 25-of-47 with three interceptions.

Defensively, Adam Mehrer led the Lions with 16 tackles, while Gross had six, a sack and an interception. Corey Cameron and Shalbrack also totaled six tackles each. Isiejah Al-len led Fordham with 11 tackles and two TFLs.

The Lions controlled the ball for the majority of the game, holding possession for 36:47 as opposed to Fordham’s 23:13.

“I’m proud of this team. No one thought we could win this game,” said Patricia and Shepard Alexander Head Coach of Football, Norries Wilson. “This is big. No one thought we could win this game except the 62 players on that sideline. No one panicked. We missed a field goal, no one panicked. We missed a PAT, no one panicked.
