2010-11 Season PreviewWith the 2010 season fast approaching, the Bridgewater Eagles football team has its eyes set on the ultimate

prize that has eluded it for the past five seasons – the ODAC Championship. It’s been since 2005 that the Eagles have hoisted the conference crown, which is a bit too long for Bridgewa-

ter head football coach Michael Clark.“We don’t want a generation of kids to come through Bridgewater without having experienced playoff

football. The rush that is gives to our team and the excitement it generates on campus is incredible and they need to experience it again,” commented Clark, who is entering his 16th year at the helm of the Eagles football program.

The 2009 season saw drastic improvements over the 2008 campaign as the Eagles turned in a three-win im-provement and Clark notched his 100th victory as the Eagles coach.

On the offensive side of the ball, Bridgewater cracked the 30-point plateau on seven occasions while scoring 40 or more points against Averett and Guilford.

Bridgewater returns two-year starting quarterback Hagan Driskell and a plethora of weapons at the skill po-sitions. Driskell’s main target in 2009, Tyler Beiler, returns to the mix after hauling in 46 passes for 843 yards and nine touchdowns a season ago. Beiler enters the season needing 354 yards to move into the top spot in the career yardage list for a receiver and would become only the second BC receiver in school history to record 2,000 career yards.

Speedster Rudy Jackson also returns for the Eagles off of his season-ending knee injury in 2009. On the ground, Thomas Tate returns after a breakout rookie campaign with the Eagles in ’09. Tate sprinted

for 1,139 yards a season ago to become just the seventh tailback in Bridgewater history to rush for 1,000 yards. The Robert E. Lee grad accomplished the task on 68 fewer carries than any other back in Eagles history.

“Anytime you have a position player that can make us coaches look smarter by doing simple things, its something for you to build on. At the tailback position, Telly takes pressure off of us and creates a cat and mouse game for the opponent,” said Clark on his standout tailback.

In the backfield, Bridgewater also returns Ryan Richmond at the fullback position. Richmond has provided a receiving threat for the Eagles out of the backfield to the tune of three receiving touchdowns in 2009.

At the tight end position, Bridgewater lost both starting ends from a season ago and will look to newly hired tight ends coach Ray Decker to help mold a pair of starters in 2010.

Despite all of the skill position threats the Eagles possess, the BC offensive line will look completely differ-ent in 2010 in a number of ways.

Bridgewater replaces the majority of its offensive line due to graduation and will look to a new group to lead the offense in the trenches.

In the offseason, Robert Hunt replaced Adam Martiny as the line coach after a few stints in the professional ranks.

“I’ve never had a coach on staff with experience coaching in the Canadian Football League. Robert brings great professional experience to our program and we’re excited to see how our players further de-velop with him teaching the offensive linemen,” said Clark on Hunt.

Overall, the Eagles return 75% of their scoring from a season ago.

On the other side of the ball, things are very similar as the Eagles look to rebuild in the trenches.

A season ago, late season injuries plagued the Bridgewater defense, which allowed 181 yards per

During the offseason, Clark did some retooling among the BC staff, reassigning Stephon Healey to the linebackers and hiring JMU All-American Scott Lemn to coach the Eagles D-line.

“Scott brings experience, and his having spent a year working at a league rival (Randolph-Macon) will be a great addition to our staff,” said Clark on the former JMU standout.

Bridgewater returns half of its defensive linemen from the final game against Catholic as Stephen How-ard and Joel Francis return to the mix.

The Eagles linebacking core returns a pair of vet-erans in T.J. Montague and Scottie Littles. Littles and Montague are the leading returners from last season with 48 tackles apiece in ’09, including 2.5 for a loss each.

In the defensive secondary of defensive coordinator Jack Johnson’s 4-2-5 scheme, the Eagles replace the ’09 leading tackler in Aubry Dicks, the 2008 ODAC 100 Meter Dash champion, Tony Konate and longtime staple Seth Little. BC returns a pair of seasoned corners in Brandon Mitchell and Darius Burrus as the Eagles defense looks to return to its old form in 2010.

Standing in the way of the Eagles as always will be Emory &Henry, Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon. Emory & Henry returns 2009 All-American rusher Caleb Jennings, while Randolph-Macon also returns start-

ing tailbacks Thaddeus Scruggs and Drake Saunders. The electrifying Jennings scampered for 192 yards and three touchdowns in BC’s 38-34 victory in 2009 in Emory, Va. Saunders gashed the Eagles on the ground last season at Jopson Field for 155 yards as the Yellow Jackets knocked BC out of the ODAC title hunt.

Hampden-Sydney will be retooling its offense in 2009, but returns the core of its defense that pitched a shut-out last season against the Eagles.

“The ODAC is balanced. There’s not a great team, but there also isn’t a bad one. There are some teams that we haven’t beaten in a few years, and they get our focus, but every team in the conference is a threat,” said Clark.

It’s been five long years for the Eagles since they’ve tasted postseason football. It’s a taste that Clark would love to get back into the mouth of his players.

“We need broad based maturity if we want to return to the top of the conference this year. This is one the youngest teams I’ve ever coached. While we have some threats at the skills positions that can cause some problems, we ultimately need depth around those players and development along the lines to turn into a great team,” commented Clark on the Eagles.

Bridgewater begins its quest for ODAC title num-ber seven on September 4 when the Eagles travel to Latrobe, Pa. to do battle with St. Vincent. BC opens the 2010 ODAC slate on October 9 against the Ti-gers of Hampden-Sydney at Jopson Field.

Coaching Staff

Michael Clark begins his 16th season as head coach of the Bridgewater football program and his 31st year as a collegiate coach.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Clark is from a football family.His father Joe Clark, whom he played high school football for at Cincinnati

Indian Hill, is in the Ohio High School Hall of Fame in the state where he picked up 237 high school victories.

Clark and the Eagles have won a higher percentage of football games than any other college team in the state of Virginia in the 21st century at an 83-22 tally.

Under Clark’s direction, BC has participated in 16 postseason games and has won two NCAA South Region Championships and five Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles. BC’s postseason experience peaked in 2001 when it finished its best season in school history with a 12-1 record, losing in the

“Stagg Bowl,” the Division III national championship game, to perennial power Mount Union, 30-27.

Clark started his coaching career as the defensive line and linebackers coach at Murray State University in 1980 and helped Frank Beamer’s Racers to 44 wins in five seasons and a stay in the Division I-AA (FCS) national poll for 25 straight weeks. After a stint as wide receivers coach at his alma mater, Cincinnati, from 1986-87, Clark rejoined Beamer at Virginia Tech in 1988 serving as the Hokies’ defensive coordinator for five seasons. In 1993, Clark moved to Virginia Military Institute serving as as the Keydets’ defensive coordinator in 1993 and quarterbacks coach in 1994 before being named the 14th Bridgewater head coach on January 16, 1995.

Clark earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati in English Literature and was a four-year letter winner in football as a defensive back. He helped the Bearcats to a 9-2 record and a top 20 national ranking during the 1976 season. At graduation, he was given the school’s “Mr. Bearcat Award” as the outstand-ing graduating male senior at the University of Cincinnati in 1980.

EAGLES FAST FACTIn only his second year as a head coach, Michael Clark led the Eagles to a runner-up finish in the ODAC in 1996.

One of BC’s two losses that year was to the eventual conference champion, Emory & Henry. In that game, the Eagles had the ball down only six points with 3:01 remaining in the fourth quarter. The drive started on the Wasps’ 48-yard line, but BC went four-and-out. E&H then ran the clock out to win 20-14.

COACH CLARK ERA (1995-present)

Currently, Clark acts as the AFCA conference-coaching representative. He is a voting member of the AFCA-USA Today coaches poll, and recently completed a term as Chairman on the NCAA College Football Rules Committee.

Clark lives in Bridgewater with his wife Sharon. The couple has two daughters, Megan and Erin. Megan is a 2004 graduate of Bridgewater who received her Masters Degree in Public Health from George Washington University and works for the Food and Drug Administration. Megan resides in Alexandria, Va. with her husband J.D. Velez. Erin is a Mathematics graduate from Christopher Newport University who works for the US Army.


Offensive CoordinatorJoe Soltis

Joe Soltis took over the reins of Bridgewater’s high-scor-ing offense as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2006. He took over from long-time BC coordinator, Bob Colbert, who left the Eagles to take the head coaching job at Saint Vincent College.

Soltis rejoined the Bridgewater coaching staff in 1998 as the wide receivers coach after previously serving as run-ning backs coach during Michael Clark’s inaugural season in 1995. In between, he worked as a student assistant coach at James Madison University and earned his undergraduate degree in social science in 1998.

Soltis also played a year at running back for Emory & Henry and spent four years as an assistant coach at Glenvar High School in Salem, Va. from 1990-94.

Soltis is also the head strength and conditioning coach at Bridgewater. He resides in Bridgewater and is married to the former April Fifer, a 2004 Bridgewater graduate and a teacher in the Rockingham County Public Schools.

Defensive CoordinatorJack Johnson

Jack Johnson begins his fifth year on the Bridgewater College football staff. He was previously on the staff at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Johnson will coach the safety position for the Eagles and serves as the team’s Defensive Coordinator.

After his playing career at Mary Hardin-Baylor, Johnson joined the UMHB staff first as a student assistant and then as a graduate assistant.

During his four years on staff the team posted a 41-6 record, won three conference titles and was runner-up at the 2004 Stagg Bowl. Johnson coached the defensive ends at UMHB.

He graduated from Mary-Hardin-Baylor with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Sports Science with a minor in Psychology. In December 2005, he received his Master of Education degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor.


Defensive BacksPeter Raeford

Peter Raeford begins his eighth year at Bridgewater Col-lege. Prior to joining the BC staff, Raeford was an assistant coach at Greensboro College for five seasons. He coached the defensive backs for his first two seasons at Greensboro and for three seasons, he coached the outside linebackers.

Raeford played professional football in three different leagues. He was a defensive back for the USFL’s San Anto-nio Gunslingers in 1984-85 before joining the NFL’s Chicago Bears in 1987. In 1988, he played with the New York Knights in the Arena Football League.

Raeford also had brief coaching stints on the pro level. In 1991, he worked as strength coach and assistant defensive backs coach for the San Antonio Riders in the World Football League. The following year, he served as defensive backs coach and strength coach for the San Antonio Force in the

Arena Football League. Raeford also worked as a strength coach for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs from 1992-93. Peter’s daughter Chloe was a 2008 graduate of Baylor University in Texas.

Pete lives in Harrisonburg with his wife Tatyana, whom he in May 2010, and their daughters Angela and Diana.

Asst. Head Coach/Linebackers

Stephon HealeyStephon Healey will begin his seventh year with the

Bridgewater Eagles and continues his work with the defen-sive line. In the winter of 2007, he was promoted to Assis-tant Head Coach, a role formally held by Bob Colbert and is Coach Clark’s second in command in the day-to-day opera-tion of the football program.

Healey came to the States from the University of Ab-erystwyth (Wales), where he was a head coach. Prior to Aberystwyth, he coached the defensive line for a year at Averett University.

A native of London, England Healey played collegiate football at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A graduate from the University of Greenwich (London), Healey has his

undergraduate degree in Education and Human Movement Studies.Healey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified USA Weightlifting club coach. He

is also an assistant track coach (jumps) and a strength and conditioning coordinator.


Offensive LineRobert Hunt

Robert Hunt joins the Bridgewater staff after coaching a number of years in the pros and in the collegiate ranks.

Hunt was named a coaching intern, Tight Ends and Special Teams, with the Amsterdam Admirals (2005) for his first pro job and won the World Bowl as a member of Bart Andrus’ staff. As the Argos’ new Tight Ends & Offensive Quality Control coach, Hunt is the first person in team his-tory to hold either title. He most recently worked at Howard University (2007-2008) as the Offensive Line & Run Game Coordinator.

Hunt played five years as a guard/tackle at Virginia where he was named the ACC’s top offensive tackle as a senior and played in the Peach Bowl while blocking for Aaron Brooks. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 7th round of the 1999 NFL Draft. From there, he spent time with

the New Orleans Saints (1999-2000), Frankfurt Galaxy of NFLE (2000), Kansas City Chiefs (2001), Buffalo Bills (2002) San Francisco Demons & New York/New Jersey Hitmen of XFL (2001), and the New York Drag-ons of AFL (2003).

Wide ReceiversTroy Shaffer

Troy Shaffer enters his third season on the Eagles staff as the wide recievers coach.

Shaffer came to the BC program after spending 2007 working in the private sector. In 2006, he was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for the post-graduate program at Hargrave Military Academy. In 2005, Shaffer was the defensive backs coach and special teams assistant at Maryville College. From 2003-04 he was a graduate assis-tant at Lenoir-Rhyne College where he moved from coach-ing wide receivers to coaching the secondary. Shaffer began his coaching career at Methodist College as the Monarchs secondary coach.

Shaffer is a 1997 graduate of Bridgewater College where he played three years of football and one year of baseball. He graduated with a degree in history and political science.

Shaffer, a native of Clifton Forge, Va., attended Alleghany High School in Covington, Va. where he played football and baseball and was named to the Blue Ridge All-District team in both sports. Following his gradua-tion from Bridgewater, Shaffer got his start in coaching at Alleghany H.S.


Tight Ends Ray Decker

Ray Decker joins the BC staff in a full-time capacity in 2010.

In 2009, Decker served as an intern on the Bridgewa-ter staff, taking care of multiple game week duties for the Eagles. During the Spring sports season, Decker assisted the Eagles Track and Field team.

Prior to his time at BC, Decker worked for seven-plus years with the Prince William County Park Authority.

Ray graduated in May 2010 from James Madison Univer-sity with a Masters degree in Sports Management.

Defensive LineScott Lemn

Scott Lemn joins the BC staff after a stint coaching with ODAC rival Randolph-Macon.

Prior to his job with the Yellow Jackets, Lemn was a first team All-American at James Madison in 2008 (AP, The Sports Network, Walter Camp Foundation, College Sporting News) and was the Rimington Award winner as the nation’s top center while aiding the Dukes to a FCS Semifinal ap-pearance and a No.1 ranking for much of the ‘08 season.

The two-time, first-team All-CAA selection graduated in December 2008 with a degree in kinesiology and a concen-tration in sports management.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - After 78 points and over 750 total yards of offense be-tween the two teams, the Bridgewater Eagles (1-0) football squad won a shootout over the Averett Cougars (0-1) by a 44-34 margin in today's season opener at Jopson Field.

Bridgewater opened the scoring early by marching downfield in two minutes and 20 seconds after receiving the opening kickoff. BC's five play, 45 yard drive was capped off by an 18-yard strike from junior quarterback Hagan Driskell to junior wide receiver Tyler Beiler as the Eagles got on board early at a 7-0 tally.

Three minutes and 28 seconds later, after a 60-yard drive stalled out at the 14 yard line, sophomore Will Davis booted a 31 yard kick through the uprights to put BC ahead by a 10-0 score.

After the ensuing Averett and BC drives stalled out, senior Tim Newman's punt gave Averett good field position at their own 44.

Three plays later, backup quarterback Cody Ladutko made the first major mistake of the game for either team as he tossed a ball into the waiting arms of sophomore defensive lineman Mike Clements. Clements took the ball 44 yards to the house to put Bridgewater up by a 17-0 margin with three and change to play in the first frame.

After jumping out to 17 points in the first as the offense, defense and kicking team each got BC on the scoreboard, the return unit got a score of their own as junior Rudy Jackson took a punt 83 yards to pay dirt to give Bridgewater a commanding 24-0 lead with 9:05 to play in the opening half.

With the game being all BC early, Averett would respond with a score of their own as Brian Daniels capped off a six play, 45 yard drive with a one-yard touchdown burst to cut the Eagles lead to 24-7.

Bridgewater would then answer Averett's score with a four yard scamper from junior Thomas Tate to put BC back up 24 at a 31-7 score.

Averett would tally one more score before the teams headed to the locker room when with 60 ticks left on the clock, Dontavious Watson scampered for a dozen yards and an Averett score. The ensuing PAT would be missed by the Cougars with the score remaining 31-13 at the break.

Out of the halftime intermission, Averett's Antwan Hughes would burst for a nine-yard touchdown to get the Cougars within 11 as Bridgewater held on to a 31-20 lead.

BC got the final stanza started when Driskell connected with Dallas Cole for his second touchdown pass of the day, putting BC back ahead at a 38-20 margin.

Averett would answer five and a half minutes later when a breakdown in BC's coverage led to a 60 yard strike to Anthony Squillini, cutting Bridgewater's lead to 10 after Phillip Kwiatkowski's two-point conversion attempt connected with Steve Oristian, bringing the lead down to a 38-28 BC advantage.

Bridgewater would effectively put the game away when Driskell hit Jackson for a 19 yard strike with 2:17 to go, to give Bridgewater a 44-28 after Davis' PAT failed.

Averett would close out the scoring as the clock expired when Ladutko scampered 11 yards to the endzone, to end the ball game at a 44-34 score.

Despite outscoring the Cougars by 10, Bridgewater was outgained by a 444-to-320 margin.

On the ground, Bridgewater was led by Tate's 52 yards, with the junior also picking up a touchdown as BC tallied up 169 yards on the ground.

Averett pounded out 189 yards on the ground and was led by Watson's 63 yards on nine runs.

Through the air, Driskell wrapped the game up with a 15-of-27 performance for 151 yards. Driskell tossed three touchdowns and was picked off once.

For Averett, Kwiatkowski mainly nickel and dimed the Eagles as he was 18-of-40 for 205 yards and a touchdown to go along with two interceptions.

Beiler led the Eagles in receiving with four catches for 57 yards and a touchdown, while Squillini led the Cougars with five catches for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Darius Burrus led all tacklers with eight stops, while Averett's Zane Cooper picked up a team-high seven tackles.

The difference in the game came down to Bridgewater's defense forcing turnovers as the squad picked the Cougars off three times on the day.

WINCHESTER, Va. - A pair of 70-plus yard plays and a fake field goal proved to be the difference as the Bridgewater Eagles football squad (2-0) was victorious in its road opener by a 21-13 score over the Shenandoah Hornets (1-1) in out of conference action at Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium. The win was head coach Michael Clark’s 50th career road victory.

Bridgewater used a stout defense to keep the Hornets offense in check all evening, while the Eagles offense racked up 423 total yards.

After each squad saw their opening drive stall out, Shenandoah punter Nic Hoover pinned the Eagles deep in their own end.

With a first and ten at the two-yard line, junior quarterback Hagan Driskell launched a 98 yard pass play into the waiting arms of junior Tyler Beiler who made a few men miss before scampering to the house to put BC ahead 7-0 following the PAT.

“That play is designed to extend the field for us. I saw what I wanted out of it and put it out there for Tyler (Beiler). It felt like it took the ball 20 minutes to come down, but I’m just glad Tyler made the catch and scored on the play,” said Driskell of the 98-yard strike.

Driskell’s pass was the second longest in BC history, coming up a yard shy of the record set by Jeff Highfill’s 99-yard strike to Brandon Copeland on December 3, 2005 against Wesley.

Following the BC score, Shenandoah marched right back down fieid on an eight play, 72 yard drive which ended with a 38 yard touchdown burst from Anthony Cor-dero. Shenandoah would attempt a two point conversion, but would be stuffed on the play to keep BC ahead by a 7-6 tally. All eight Shenandoah plays were runs.

After senior Tim Newman’s punt pinned the Hornets deep in their own end, a three-and-out and subsequent short punt set the Eagles up with excellent field position at the Shenandoah 27.

BC’s drive would stall out at the 24 just three plays later, bringing on a Will Davis field goal attempt. On the snap, holder Patrick Smoot dashed to the endzone untouched to put Bridgewater up 14-6 with 14:54 to play in the second quarter.

Bridgewater would receive the second half kick and see their first play from scrim-mage be negated by a holding call before junior Thomas Tate barreled 70 yards to paydirt to put the Eagles up 21-6.

For the remainder of the game, neither team would establish much offense until the Hornets added a late score off a 10-yard touchdown strike with 1:49 left in the game to cut the BC lead to 21-13.

Shenandoah would try to an onside kick following the touchdown but Beiler’s recovery sealed a BC victory by a 21-13 tally.

A balanced offense led the BC team as the Eagles pounded out over 235 yards on the ground and 188 yards through the air.

Tate led all rushers with 192 yards on 22 carries in just his second game in a Crim-son and Gold uniform.

With his 192 yards on the ground, Tate becomes the first BC running back to eclipse 190 yards since Winston Young’s 198-yard performance in 2005 vs. Randolph-Macon.

Through the air, Driskell was 9-of-18 for 188 yards while Beiler was BC’s leading receiver with two catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Driskell’s performance was good enough to put the junior in sole possession of tenth place on the all-time passing list with 1,703 yards.

On the defensive side, senior Travis Gantt led all Bridgewater tacklers with six stops. All of Gantt’s tackles were solos stops.

Shenandoah was led through the air by a 9-of-25 performance from Vern Lunsford. Lunsford threw for 108 yards and a touchdown that got the Hornets within a score late in the final stanza.

On the ground, Keone Kyle just missed the 100-yard plateau with 96 yards on 22 runs.

The win improved BC to 41-12 on the road since 2000 and 9-1 and in road open-ers since the turn of the century. BC’s victory also marked the 20th victory for head coach Michael Clark over a USA South opponent and BC’s first victory on this date in school history.

FERRUM, Va. - In a tale of two halves, the Bridgewater Eagles (2-1) football squad tied the game twice late after falling behind 24-7 at the intermission, before eventually falling 37-34 in overtime to the Ferrum Panthers (1-1) at WB Adams Sta-dium on the Ferrum campus.

The loss for the Eagles was the squad’s first of the season. After both teams saw their opening possessions stopped by an interception, Ferrum

would start its second drive of the game at the BC 26. With a third and seven for the Panthers just outside of the redzone, a Matt Dobson

screen pass turned into six, before the PAT put Ferrum ahead by a 7-0 score. Bridgewater would cross midfield on its second drive of the game, before things

would stall out at the Ferrum 40 yard line giving Ferrum the ball back inside their own 20 following a Tim Newman punt.

Ferrum would make things look easy with a quick score to put the Panthers up by a 14-0 score.

Senior Seth Little would set BC up with great field position following a kick return to near midfield as the game entered the second stanza.

All things would continue to go Ferrum’s way in the second as BC’s drive stalled out just over the 50 yard line giving the Panthers the ball back.

Ferrum would drive the ball downfield with relative ease again until a Panther miscue gave the Eagles the football back.

BC’s woes would continue after the Ferrum defense forced a Driskell fumble to set the Panthers offense up with great field position.

Three plays later, Ferrum would hit paydirt again to go ahead 21-0 following the PAT, putting BC in a deep hole midway through the second quarter.

Following a BC conversion on fourth down, the Eagles would find the endzone a few plays later off a Nathaniel Jackson touchdown blast to bring the score to a 21-7 tally with under a minute left in the first half.

BC’s bad luck would continue when the first half expired, after a personal foul would give Ferrum another field goal attempt, this time much closer, from the 31. Fer-rum would connect as time expired to take a 24-7 halftime lead.

Bridgewater would receive the ball to open the second half as the BC offense got clicking with a 40-plus yard gain on a Rudy Jackson pass in the flat. Jackson would barrel through the Ferrum defense two plays later, across the middle again, as the Eagles found the endzone to bring BC within ten at a 24-14 margin.

BC would force Ferrum’s first three and out of the game to get the ball back in a hurry before a Driskell pass across the middle to Patrick Smoot nearly went the distance, setting up a one yard run from Thomas Tate to give the Eagles new life at a 24-20 score following a missed PAT from kicker Will Davis.

Bridgewater’s defense would go on to force back-to-back three and outs, before a Driskell interception gave Ferrum excellent field position at the BC 16. Ferrum would then boot a 19 yard field goal to extend its lead to 27-20 with 12 and change remain-ing.

BC would waste little time as the Eagles utilized a no-huddle offense to punch in the equalizer with a short touchdown strike to Tyler Beiler with 9:05 left in the game to tie things up at 27. After things were all Eagles for the first quarter of the second half, Ferrum would answer in a hurry with a 1:40 drive to take the lead back at a 34-27 tally with 7:25 left.

Bridgewater’s offense would remain relatively unstoppable when Driskell would connect with Richmond for a one-yard strike to knot the game up at 34-34 with 1:31 left.

The Eagles would take a knee after getting the ball back to let time expire, pushing things to overtime. Ferrum declined after winning the toss, giving BC the choice, where the Eagles chose to receive.

BC would pick up the first down, but a costly fumble by receiver Leigh Bradley would be recovered by the Panthers, giving Ferrum a chance to end the game.

Ferrum would have a touchdown averted before a run up the middle set up a 28 yard field goal attempt. Following a Bridgewater timeout, the field goal would split the uprights to give Ferrum the 37-34 overtime victory.

On the afternoon, the Eagles outgained Ferrum at a 429-399 clip, lead by a 287 yard effort through the air. Driskell ended the game at 19-of-29 for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Driskell also threw two costly interceptions.

On the ground, Nathaniel Jackson led the Eagles with 43 yards on 10 carries. Smoot ended the day with 109 yards on four catches. Joel Francis and TJ Montague led the Eagles defense with six tackles a piece. Ferrum’s Steven Harris ended the day with 103 yards and a touchdown on nine

runs. Dobson ended the day with 94 yards and two touchdowns on a 9-15 afternoon. Dobson also tossed one pick.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Despite five turnovers and a pesky Lycoming squad, the Bridgewater Eagles (3-1) football team rolled up 32 points in its non-conference finale, defeating Lycoming (1-2) by a 32-29 tally on a water logged Jopson Field.

BC’s offense racked up over 300 yards on a rain-drenched Jopson Field, keep-ing the Warriors off balance all day, while the defense held Lycoming in check all afternoon.

Bridgewater got things started at the 10:02 mark, when Charvis Claytor took a 52 yard Lycoming punt to the endzone to give the Eagles a 7-0 advantage. The return was BC’s second of the season that went the distance.

Lycoming wouldn’t be down for long as the Warriors immediately returned the ensuing kickoff, but miss the PAT to keep the Eagles ahead by a 7-6 score.

At the 8:44 mark, BC got back on the scoreboard when a Thomas Tate burst went 44 yards to the endzone, to put Bridgewater up 14-6 following the Davis PAT.

Both teams saw their offenses sputter out for the remainder of the first quarter, but Lycoming closed the gap at the 9:13 mark of the second stanza when the Warriors jarred the ball loose from Tate, and returned the ball to the endzone, to bring the game to a 14-12 margin. The Warriors would miss the ensuing two-point conversion at-tempt, keeping the score at 14-12.

BC added one more score to the board before heading to the locker room when Hagan Driskell connected with Patrick Smoot on a 20-yard strike to put the Eagles up 21-12 at the break.

Bridgewater’s defense held Lycoming to a meager 50 yards in the first half. The Eagles received the ball in the second half and see its first drive stall out, giv-

ing the ball back to Lycoming. After an anemic first half, Lycoming’s offense came alive on the next drive, with

things being capped off by a six-yard touchdown pass from Colin Dwyer to Sean Saylor, putting the score at 21-19.

Bridgewater’s offense would remain off the scoreboard for the duration of the third quarter, while Lycoming booted a field goal with 2:39 left in the third frame to a take a 22-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

BC immediately responded with a 10 play, 69 yard drive which was capped off by a Nathaniel Jackson one-yard burst on fourth down to take a 27-22 lead. Driskell con-nected with Smoot on a short fade pass for the two-point conversion to put the Eagles up 29-22.

Both teams would again remain silent until a Will Davis 35-yard field goal gave the Eagles extra insurance at a 32-22 margin.

Lycoming answered on the next drive after getting good field position following a BC penalty on the return.

The Warriors worked quickly on a three play, 60 yard drive, capped off by a Dwyer pass to Adam Paulhamaus to cut the Eagles lead to three at a 32-29 clip.

Lycoming would attempt the onside kick with 1:43 left in the game, but Patrick Smoot recovered the ball effectively locking the game for the Eagles.

The Warriors forced a BC punt with nine seconds left, but the Tim Newman boot would find no one on the receiving end as time expired, giving Bridgewater a 32-29 victory.

Driskell finished the day 12-of-25 for 165 yards and a touchdown. With his touchdown pass, Driskell moves into a tie for fifth place on the BC career passing touchdowns list with 1973 graduate Mike Arnette.

Dwyer rounded out the day 15-of-29 for 178 yards. Dwyer tossed two touchdowns and one interception.

On the ground, Tate led the way with a game-high 137 yards, with all but two of those yards coming in the first half, after Tate got banged up early in the third quarter. The 137 yard day marked Tate’s second 100-plus yard game of the season.

Josh Kleinfelter led the way for Lycoming with 25 runs for 99 yards. Junior Tyler Beiler led the way on the receiving end with a game-high eight catches

for 120 yards. Beiler’s 41 yard catch late in the fourth helped set up Davis’ eventual game-winning field goal. With his 120 yards on the afternoon, Beiler moved into sole possession of ninth place on the all-time receiving yards list.

Ryan Wagaman led the way for the Warriors with four catches for 68 yards. TJ Montague led the way for the Eagles on the defensive end with nine stops,

including one for a loss. Senior Jeremy Lewis also pitched in a stellar afternoon with eight tackles. Lewis piled up six solo stops, two sacks and two-and-a-half tackles for a loss.

Lycoming was led by a game-high 12 tackles from Kevin Hoben. The win gives Bridgewater a slight edge in the all-time series at a 2-1 mark.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Three BC interceptions turned into 13 Hampden-Sydney (5-0, 2-0 ODAC) points as the Bridgewater Eagles (3-2, 0-1 ODAC) football squad opened up ODAC play with a 19-0 loss to the Tigers on the road at Everett Stadium.

Hampden-Sydney marched downfield in a hurry on its opening drive of the game to take a 6-0 lead off of a six-yard strike to Anthony Mancini from fifth-year quarterback Corey Sedlar. HSC’s PAT attempt was wide, keeping the score at 6-0.

Following a pair of Bridgewater drives, the Hampden-Sydney offense began with excellent field position at its 45, but the Bridgewater defense held strong, giving the offense the ball back at the BC 46.

After Hampden-Sydney took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter, the Eagles would answer with a methodical drive, before a Driskell interception in the endzone gave the Tigers the ball back at their own 12.

Hampden-Sydney then capitalized on the BC miscue with a 17 play, 88 yard drive, capped off by a Sedlar keeper, to take a 13-0 lead which is where the game remained until halftime.

Both teams saw little offense established on their opening drives of the second half, before the Eagles offense came alive on its second drive of the third quarter.

Bridgewater moved to the HSC 11 yard line before Driskell tossed his second interception of the game, to give the Tigers the ball back.

Hampden-Sydney made the Eagles pay on the turnover, when Sedlar connected on his second touchdown pass of the day to give the Tigers a 19-0 lead with four minutes and change to play in the third quarter. The Tigers two-point conversion attempt failed, keeping the score at 19-0.

Bridgewater moved inside the red-zone again, but a Driskell pass was picked off, stalling out the Eagles drive, keeping the score at 19-0, which is where things would stay for the remainder of the game as the Eagles fell in their ODAC opener.

On the day, Bridgewater’s defense held the fast-break Hampden-Sydney in check, by holding the Tigers over 200 yards under their season average.

BC’s offense was anemic in the first half before putting together a 200 plus yard second half, but was unable to find the endzone, despite a number of red-zone chances.

Hampden-Sydney outgained the Eagles by a 323-280 clip after outgaining BC by a 199-50 margin in the first half.

On the ground, Thomas Tate went over 100 yards yet again with a game-high 103 yards on 20 carries.

Through the air, Driskell was 13-of-32 for 118 yards and three costly interceptions. On the receiving end, Tyler Beiler led the Eagles with six catches for 51 yards.

With his six catches, Beiler now has 70 career receptions, placing him in 14th place all-time.

TJ Montague led the Eagles defense with a game-high 10 tackles. For Hampden-Sydney, Kirk Rohle led the way on the ground with 84 yards on 18

runs. Through the air, Sedlar finished the day at 26-of-36 for 210 yards and two touch-

downs. Sedlar set the Hampden-Sydney career passing record on the day with 210 yards.

On the receiving end, Mancini led the way with six grabs for 78 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Trevor Ikwild led the Tigers defense with nine tackles including two for a loss. The shutout against the Eagles was the first for the team since a 66-0 loss in the

playoffs to Mount Union on Dec. 13, 2003. The last time the Eagles were shut out by Hampden-Sydney was in 1980 by a similar 20-0 tally.

Scoring Summary Tate Runs for 157 Yards in 40-9 Victory Over Guilford

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Junior running back Thomas Tate crossed the century mark for the third straight game as the Bridgewater Eagles (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) found their rhythm on offense en route to a 40-9 route over the visiting Guilford Quakers (1-5, 0-2 ODAC) on Homecoming day at Jopson Field.

Tate’s 157 yard afternoon marked the fourth 100-plus yard game for the Staunton, Va. native in just six career games.

BC got things started early with a Tate 15 yard run which was set up by a 53 yard kick return by senior David Argaud, putting the Eagles up 6-0 following a missed PAT with 14:32 left in the opening frame.

Bridgewater forced a three and out on the first Guilford possession of the game, giving BC the ball back at its own 23 following a D.J. Wilson punt.

Tate then scampered 77 yards to the endzone to give the Eagles a 12-0 advantage. Sophomore Tyler Kelly missed his second PAT in a row to keep the game at a 12-0 margin.

At a 12-0 deficit after just three Bridgewater offensive plays, the Guilford offense was able to manufacture a nine play drive of its own, which culminated with a 27 yard field goal splitting the uprights as the BC lead was cut to a 12-3 gap.

The game would remain 12-3 through the remainder of the first quarter before the Eagles opened the second quarter scoring with an 11 yard strike from Hagan Driskell to Argaud, putting Bridgewater ahead 18-3. BC would convert on a fade pass to Rudy Jackson on the two-point conversion attempt to give the Eagles a 20-3 advantage with 8:12 left in the first half.

Guilford answered two minutes later when a sneak by quarterback Billy Watkins bridged the gap to bring the Quakers to within 11, after the Guilford PAT was missed, keeping the score at 20-9.

Arguad put BC back on the scoreboard immediately with a 93 yard kickoff return, giving the Eagles a 26-9 advantage after another Kelly PAT failed to split the uprights. Argaud’s kick return was the longest kick return for the Eagles this year.

Bridgewater’s defense then forced another Guilford three-and-out, putting the ball back in the Eagles hands with less than five minutes remaining in the opening half.

Seven plays later, Tate found the back of the endzone again, with an eight yard burst, giving the Eagles a 32-9 lead. Sophomore kicker Will Davis would convert BC’s first PAT of the day, giving BC a 33-9 lead, which is where things remained as the game headed to the intermission.

With the game in hand, the Eagles tacked on one more score late in the third quarter on a 32 yard strike from Driskell to Tyler Beiler to give BC a 40-9 lead, which is where the scoring would end, giving Bridgewater its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory of the year by a 40-9 margin.

Tate led all runners on the day with his 157 yards. Tate’s three touchdowns and his 77 yard run are both team high’s for the Eagles in 2009.

Through the air, Driskell led the way with 173 yards on 11-of-18 passing, to go along with two touchdown passes. BC got three quarterbacks into the game, with senior Vince Reese completing 2-of-5 passes and freshman Jacob Hutchinson completing his first career pass in the middle of the fourth quarter, as part of a 1-for-2 afternoon.

On the receiving end, Patrick Smoot led all receivers with seven catches for 91 yards.

Guilford was led on the ground by Earl Womble’s nine carries for 38 yards. Through the air, Billy Watkins threw for a game-high 184 yards on 17-of-30 pass-

ing. BC outgained Guilford by a 422-280 clip and edged the Quakers by a 18-17 margin

in first downs. Bridgewater’s 422 yards of total offense was 100 yards above what the Guilford defense, ranked No. 3 in the ODAC coming into the game, was allowing on the year.

Defensively, the Eagles were led by eight tackle performances from Seth Little and Scottie Littles. Guilford linebacker Richie Paul recorded a game-high 11 tackles to led all defenders.

At halftime, the Eagles honored four newcomers to the BC Athletics Hall of Fame, with Nicoll Kenney, Dee Morris, Donald Mitchell and Chris Sizemore joining the 91 previous Hall of Fame inductees.

EMORY, Va. - He only needed one chance. It took over 500 yards of total offense, numerous fourth down stands by the defense, and a muffed punt in the final minutes but the Bridgewater Eagles (5-2, 2-1 ODAC) finally emerged victorious in a see saw affair with a 38-34 victory over Emory & Henry (4-3, 0-3 ODAC) to earn head coach Michael Clark’s 100th career victory.

After returning the opening kickoff past midfield, the running back that Clark was worried most about, junior Caleb Jennings, went untouched 36 yards from scrimmage to give the Wasps a 7-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.

BC answered four minutes later, when junior Thomas Tate went untoched to the house on a 17 yard blast to knot the game up at seven a piece.

Emory & Henry kept the offensive barrage going, when Jennings notched his second score of the day, this time from five yards out, to give E&H a 14-7 lead with six and change remaining.

The running back show would continue on Bridgewater’s second possession, until the Eagles got in the redzone and Tate couldn’t get his hands on a Hagan Driskell pitch, coughing the ball up, giving Emory & Henry the ball back inside its own 10.

Bridgewater’s defense was up to the task on the ensuing Emory & Henry drive, forcing a Wasps punt, giving the Eagles the ball in good field position at the 36 yard line as the clock expired on the first quarter.

Both teams combined for 226 yards of total offense in the opening quarter. BC would put three more points on the board with a 25 yard Will Davis field goal

with 11:45 left in the opening half, cutting Emory & Henry’s lead to 14-10.Emory & Henry would use a double reverse pass from Josh Castle to Frederick

George two drives later to give the Wasps a 63-yard touchdown strike and a 20-10 halftime lead.

Bridgewater answered on its first drive of the second half on an 18 yard strike from Driskell to Leigh Bradley to bridge the gap to a 20-17 Wasps lead. Bradley’s touch-down reception was the second of his career.

Emory & Henry would answer with a drive of its own, but the Eagles defense would yet again be up to the task, forcing the Wasps drive to stall out on downs at the BC 29.

Bridgewater notched its second score of the quarter when a long Tate run set the Eagles up inside the redzone, before a Brad Jones one yard burst gave BC its first lead of the day at a 24-20 tally with under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Junior Rudy Jackson made it a 21 point third quarter for the Eagles on an 80 yard end around to give Bridgewater a 31-20 advantage. Jackson’s touchdown burst was the longest run from scrimmage for the Eagles this year, eclipsing Tate’s 77 yard run against Guilford.

Emory & Henry capitalized on excellent starting field position on its ensuing pos-session with a 42 yard Jennings touchdown run to bring the BC lead to 31-26. E&H attempted the two-point conversion to make it a field goal game, but came up short on a Drew Piscopo keeper to keep the Bridgewater lead at five.

Two drives later, Emory & Henry answered with a four yard PIscopo touchdown pass, set up by a long Jennings run, taking the lead at 34-31 following a Cain Ring-staff two point conversion.

Bridgewater kept the see saw game going with a quick score of its own off of a 54-yard Tate touchdown blast to give the Eagles the lead back at 38-34 with a 7:45 to play.

Emory & Henry had its back to the wall with a third and 19 following an Austin Icaza sack, but was able to pick up 20 on a Piscopo pass to keep their chances alive with under six minutes left, but the Eagles eventually forced a Wasps punt to give the Eagles the ball with 3:57 left.

Bridgewater was able to play keep away for three minutes, but were forced to punt the ball with a minute and a half left. Emory & Henry muffed the punt, giving the Eagles the ball back.

The Eagles would then go into victory formation, ensuring a hard-fought 38-34 victory over the Wasps.

Tate led the Eagles offense with 177 yards on the ground as the Staunton, Va. na-tive tallied his fourth straight 100 yard rushing game and his fifth in seven games.

Driskell was solid for the second week in a row finishing the day at 15-of-25 for 196 yards and a touchdown.

On the receiving end, junior Tyler Beiler led all receivers with seven grabs for a 104 yards. His seven catches puts him in 13th all-time and puts the Ronks, Pa. native over 1,400 career yards.

Defensively, Scottie Littles finished with a game-high eight tackles.Emory & Henry was led by Jennings on the ground. The junior netted 192 yards on

the ground and a trio of touchdowns.Through the air, Piscopo finished the day at 10-of-17 for 100 yards and a touch-

down.On the receiving end, Ringstaff led the Wasps with four catches, while Fred George

led the way with 63 yards.Defensively, Daniel Woods racked up a game-high 11 stops.Between the two teams, 910 yards off total offense was rolled up, with the Eagles

putting up a season-best 517 yards.

Game #8 - Bridgewater 35 - Washington and Lee 34 - Lexington, Va. (Wilson Field) - October 31, 2009

Scoring Summary Eagles Win a Wild One, 35-34, Over Washington and LeeLEXINGTON, Va. - It may be the oldest adage in the book, but it could be the

most exclusive reference to the old saying that word’s simply can’t describe it. In Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Saturday, the Bridgewater Eagles (6-2, 3-1 ODAC) escaped Wilson Field on the Washington and Lee (3-6, 2-3 ODAC) campus with a gut-wrenching 35-34 overtime victory over the Washington and Lee Generals.

In a back and forth game, Washington and Lee looked like it was going to win when Johnathan Clemo jaunted toward the end zone with no one around him. Then in the slide heard around the Old Dominion State, he decided to slide and give the Generals a shot at the game-winning field goal.

Four plays later, the Eagles were out of timeouts and the Generals were a 24 yard field goal away from victory. Martin Pritchard’s 24 yard field goal went wide left, giv-ing BC new life and continuing one of the more bizarre endings to a game in ODAC history, fitting the Halloween setting in Lexington.

At the beginning of the contest, Bridgewater took the opening drive 50 yards on 14 plays using a balanced offense to march to the Washington and Lee 20 before things stalled out. BC capped the drive off with a 37 yard Will Davis field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 7:54 to play in the first. Davis’ 37 yarder was a season-best, while the Eagles 14 play drive was the longest drive of the year according to plays.

Following a three and out by both teams, Washington and Lee got its aerial attack going, using the arm of Charlie Westfal to convert a pair of key third downs before capping off its second drive of the game in the end-zone on a 15 yard pitch and catch to take a 7-3 lead with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza.

Washington and Lee then intercepted Driskell on the ensuing BC drive to give the Generals good field position just shy of midfield. The interception for Driskell was his first in 58 passes and set the Generals up to find paydirt six plays later on a Brett Mur-ray run to take a 14-3 lead with 10 and change remaining in the second quarter.

Driskell then redeemed himself on the following BC possession, guiding the Eagles on a 10 play, 62 yard drive which was capped off by a Driskell touchdown pass to ju-nior Tyler Beiler to bring the Eagles to within four at a 14-10 tally following the Davis PAT with 5:49 to play in the first half.

Bridgewater would take the lead three plays later when a tipped Westfal pass was picked off and returned 58 yards by senior corner Tony Konate to put the Eagles up 17-14 as the game headed to the intermission.

Washington and Lee took the lead back on its first drive of the second half off a 43 yard screen pass in the flat to Ryan Welsh to give the Generals a 21-17 lead.

BC kept the back and forth battle going when a 51 yard Thomas Tate run got the Eagles inside the 5, but it was backwards from there before Davis punched a 25 yard field goal through the uprights to get the Eagles within one at 21-20 with 9:50 to go in the third.

After BC’s score, Washington and Lee would sponge up some clock on a 14 play, 59 yard drive which culminated in a one-yard Westfal run to put the Generals up eight at a 28-20 margin.

The Eagles would drive down to Washington and Lee’s side of the field, before the drive stalled out forcing a 47 yard Davis field goal attempt. Davis’ field goal with a strong wind came up short, keeping the game at 28-20 with just over eight minutes left in the game.

Bridgewater then forced a W&L punt before Driskell connected downfield on a fake reverse pass to Beiler which wound up in the end zone 73 yards later to get the Eagles within two at 28-26. BC converted on the two-point conversion attempt with a pass to Leigh Bradley to knot the game at 28 a piece.

Washington and Lee moved the ball into BC territory, before Darius Burrus stripped the ball away from the Generals receiver to give the Eagles new life near midfield.

Tate then fumbled the ball on the next BC play to give the Generals the football back at the Eagles 48 with three and half minutes to play.

Washington and Lee looked like it was heading to the end zone, but the tailback, Johnathan Clemo, slid in open space at the 6yard line with no defenders in sight with just over a minute left.

The Generals set up a 24 yard field goal with four seconds left, but the kick went wide right, to put the game into overtime.

Bridgewater won the toss in overtime, and elected to take the ball going with the wind.

On third and five from inside the 20, Driskell connected with Beiler to put the Eagles ahead 34-28. Following an offsides call on the Generals, Davis converted the PAT to put the Eagles up 35-28.

Washington and Lee answered quickly on a short two play drive to bring the score to 35-34. After missing the potential game-winning field goal earlier, the Generals decided to go for two. Westfal eluded three BC blitzers but somehow got the pass off but it fell incomplete, giving the Eagles a hard-fought 35-34 victory.

On the ground, Tate led all rushers with 18 runs for 100 yards giving the junior his fifth straight 100 yard performance.

Through the air, Driskell finished the day at 15-of-24 for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Driskell threw one interception, his first since the Hampden-Sydney loss. Driskell’s 200 yards puts him in 11th place on the single-season yardage list with 1,478. His three touchdown throws also places him in the top 10 with 14 on the year.

On the receiving end, Beiler ended the day with and game-high 108 yards on five catches and a career-high three touchdown grabs. Beiler’s three touchdown grabs moves him into the top ten all-time, while his five catches also places him in the top 10 with 84 career receptions. His five 100-yard receiving games matches the all-time high of five set by All-American C. Jay DeWitt in 1975.

Defensively, Aubry Dicks led the Eagles with 10 stops, while Brandon Mitchell chipped in nine tackles and Scottie Littles added six tackles including one for a loss.

For Washington and Lee, Westfal finished at 10-of-16 for 127 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, Clemo finished with a team-high 93 yards on 23 carries. On the receiving end, Welsh led the Generals with three catches for 55 yards and a

score. Defensively, Donavon Sawyer led the Generals with seven tackles. W&L outgained the Eagles by a 396 to 323 total while the turnover margin was

even with two turnovers for each team.

Football Falls 33-23 to Randolph-Macon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Trailing by 14 at the end of the first quarter, the Bridge-water Eagles (6-3, 3-2 ODAC) rattled off 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a seven point lead into the locker room. But, BC would get outscored by 19-2 margin in the second half en route to a 33-23 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) loss at the hands of Randolph-Macon (6-3, 4-1 ODAC) at Jopson Field.

The loss for the Eagles was the first at home this season and the first in 372 days. Randolph-Macon used a Bridgewater fumble to earn excellent field position after

pinning the Eagles at the one on a Ben Keyser punt. RM-C would score two plays after the Ryan Richmond fumble to take a 7-0 lead with 7:37 to play in the opening frame.

Following a Hagan Driskell interception which was returned to the Eagles seven following a facemask penalty on BC, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 14-0 advan-tage on a Thaddeus Scruggs seven yard blast.

Bridgewater responded with a 14 play, 80 yard drive to even the score at 14-7. BC scored on the team’s second fake field goal for a touchdown of the season, this time a three-yard run off of the right side on a keeper from Patrick Smoot.

Randolph-Macon looked like it was going to answer quickly following a dose of Eagles trickery when Scruggs broke free into the secondary. Scruggs reached the BC 11 before senior corner Tony Konate chased Scruggs down from behind and lodged the ball loose, to give the Eagles the ball back at their own one.

Driskell connected on his first touchdown pass of the game five plays later when he caught junior Tyler Beiler on a post pattern to go 77 yards to the endzone, knotting the game up at 14.

Bridgewater would round out its explosive second quarter with a 53 yard pitch and catch from Driskell to Leigh Bradley to take a 21-14 lead into the intermission.

On its first drive of the second half, Randolph-Macon was held to a 23-yard Josh Storm field goal as the Yellow Jackets cut BC’s advantage to 21-17.

Randolph-Macon then netted the go-ahead score with 6:36 to play in the third quarter on a 13-yard dump pass from quarterback Austin Faulker to Steve Matthews to take a 24-21 lead.

Eighty-six seconds later, the Yellow Jackets struck again, this time on a one-yard QB keeper from Faulkner to take a 30-21 lead. Faulkner’s keeper was set up by Driskell’s second pick of the game.

Randolph-Macon added to its advantage with 14:50 to play in the game on a 35-yard field goal from Storm to extend the RM-C lead to 33-21.

Bridgewater would finally get back on the scoreboard when backup quarterback Jacob Hutchinson blocked a Keyser punt with the ball then rolling out of the back of the endzone to give the Eagles a safety. The punt block was the first of the season for the Eagles.

Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving Randolph-Macon a 33-23 conference victory over the Eagles.

Bridgewater was led on the ground by junior Thomas Tate’s 60 yards on 12 carries. All of Tate’s yards came in the first half as the Staunton, Va. native was unavailable for action in the second half. Tate’s 60 yards put him at 1,015 yards on the season as the junior became only the eighth rusher in BC history to crack the 1,000 yard plateau in a season. His 60 yards broke a streak of five-straight games with 100-yards or more dating back to the Lycoming game on September 26.

Through the air, Driskell turned in a season-best 260 yard performance. Driskell finished the day 17-of-28 with two touchdowns and a pair of costly interceptions.

Driskell’s 260 yard game is the second-highest single game performance of the Caroline, Va. native’s career behind a 321 yard game last season against Ferrum. His 260 yards moves the junior into fifth-place all-time on the career yardage list with 3,243 yards. His 17 completions moved him into fifth-place on the career completions chart.

Beiler recorded four catches for a game-high 123 yards and a touchdown to lead the Eagles on the receiving end. Beiler’s 123 yard game gives him five 100-plus yard games on the year, including three in a row.

Beiler’s 123 yards moves the Ronks, Pa. native into fourth place on the career receiving charts with 1,631 yards. His 77 yard touchdown catch moved him into a tie for sixth on the career receiving touchdowns list with 13.

On a banged up BC defense, Chris Wholey led the Eagles with eight tackles. For Randolph-Macon it was Drake Sanders’ 24 carries for 155 yards leading the

way. Sanders received the bulk of the carries in the second half. Through the air, Faulkner finished the day 9-of-14 for 159 yards and a score to go

along with a pair of interceptions. Bridgewater held the ODAC’s leading receiver, Earl Peoples, to three catches on

the day and a team-best 75 yards. Christian Stahl recorded a game-high 12 tackles to lead the Yellow Jackets defense.

Scoring Summary Football Defeats Catholic 30-13 on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Behind two 100-yard rushers and 468 yards of total of-fense, the Bridgewater Eagles (7-3, 4-2 ODAC) sent the team’s 21 seniors out with a convincing 30-13 victory in the season finale against Catholic (1-9, 0-6 ODAC) at Jopson Field.

Senior Brad Jones crossed the 100 yard plateau for the first time in his career with 112 yards on a career-high 25 carries. Jones’ 27 yard run in the fourth quarter was the longest run of the season for the Rocky Mount, N.C. native.

Junior Thomas Tate rounded out the season with his seventh 100 yard game, this time gashing the Cardinals for 152 yards on 13 runs. Tate’s 81 yard burst with 10:42 left in the game was BC’s longest run of the season and the longest of Tate’s career.

Bridgewater got on the board first when sophomore Will Davis’ 43 yard field goal split the uprights to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead with 5:40 to play in the opening frame. Davis’ 43 yard field goal was a career long, surpassing a 37 yard boot from earlier in the season at Washington and Lee.

Catholic answered the Eagles two drives later when the Cardinals marched 70 yards on six plays to take a 7-3 lead after a Rich Barry one-yard blast reached the endzone with 14:31 to play in the second quarter.

The Eagles would then immediately answer when a seven play, 62 yard drive was capped off by a Hagan Driskell four-yard pitch and catch to senior Ryan Richmond to give the Eagles a 9-3 lead. Davis’ PAT attempt hit the post to keep the score at 9-7 with 11 and change to play in the opening half.

Both teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the first half as the Eagles took a 9-7 lead into the locker room.

Bridgewater missed a field goal on its opening drive of the second half, but a Joel Francis interception off of a tipped pass by senior Austin Icaza on the Cardinals’ first play of the ensuing drive gave the Eagles new life on the Catholic 17.

BC capitalized on its exceptional field position four plays later when Driskell connected with Beiler on a 20 yard strike to give the Eagles a 16-7 lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter.

With 10:42 to play, Tate took a handoff and broke through the Catholic defense and found paydirt 81 yards later to give the Eagles a 23-7 advantage.

Bridgewater’s defense held the Cardinals to another three and out to give the of-fense the ball back with 9:37 to play.

Catholic then came up with a huge defensive score when Avatus Stone picked off a Hagan Driskell pass at the two and returned the ball the entire way to the endzone to get the Cardinals to within 10 at a 23-13 margin after the Thomas Breslin PAT at-tempted missed wide right.

Bridgewater then put the game effectively out of reach when senior quarterback Vince Reese capped off a 10 play, 53 yard drive with a two yard bootleg run to put the Eagles ahead 30-13 which is where the game would end, pushing the Eagles to 7-3 on the season and earning the team its fourth ODAC win of the year.

On the ground, Tate’s 152 led the way as the Eagles outrushed Catholic by a 310-45 margin. For the Eagles, it was the first time since September 2006 that BC had two running backs rush for 100 yards in a game.

Tate’s 152 yards gave the junior 1,167 yards on the season. The Staunton, Va. na-tive’s season total is the tenth-highest single season total in BC history. His 152 yards also gave the junior his seventh 100 yard game of the season, which ties Tate with Davon Cruz for the most 100-yard rushing games in a regular season (Cruz had nine 100 yard games in 2000, two came in the playoffs, he had eight in 2001 with three coming in the playoffs)

Through the air, Driskell finished the day 12-of-22 for 158 yards and two touch-downs to go along with three interceptions. Driskell finishes the year with 1,896 yards and 18 touchdowns. The Caroline, Va. native’s season yard total was the fifth highest in a season in BC history while his 18 touchdown passes were also good enough for fifth in a season.

Driskell, a junior, his thrown for 3,401 yards in his career, good enough for fourth place on the career yardage list. His 28 career touchdowns place him in fifth.

On the receiving end, junior Leigh Bradley led BC with three catches for 51 yards. Fellow junior Tyler Beiler hauled in three balls for 49 yards and a touchdown to turn in the third-highest total in BC history for single season receiving yards with 843 and the second-highest single season receiving touchdowns total with nine. His 14 career touchdown catches places the Ronks, Pa. native in sixth place all-time, while his 1,680 career yards puts the junior in fourth place. His 46 catches on the year is tied for the fourth highest single season total in school history while his 91 career receptions places him in eighth.

Defensively, the Eagles were led by a pair of seniors in Tony Konate and Aubry Dicks with the tandem turning in seven stops a piece.

Catholic was led on the ground by Rich Barry’s 55 yard effort, while freshman Greg Cordivari was 18-of-35 for 222 yards and an interception.

On the receiving end, Shayne Dickinson hauled in a game-high five balls while teammate Spencer Robinson picked up a game-high 69 yards on three grabs.

Defensively, Avatus Stone led all tacklers with nine stops. BC’s defense held Catholic to 267 yards of total offense, which was the lowest total

for a team this season. Catholic’s 45 yards on the ground was also a season-low for BC opponents.

Bridgewater rounds out the regular season with a 4-1 mark at home and a perfect 6-0 record when scoring first on opponents.

The Eagles finish the year at 7-3, a marked improvement over last season’s 4-6 mark.

The College


College athletics has evolved to the point where total physical preparation is necessary to be successful. Bridgewater employs a five-member athletic training staff. Under the tutilege of Director Barbara Long, the group of Sarah Cook, Chase Hale, Ellen Hicks and Scott Powers serve as Assistant Athletic Trainers for the entire Bridgewater College Athletics Department.

Long is a graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in Biology; United States Sports Academy with master’s degrees in Sports Medicine and Fitness Management and is currently enrolled in the Doc-tor of Education program in Organzational Leadership at Shenandoah University. She was certified by

the Board of Certification in 1989 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an athletic trainer. Her career has had her working with professional and high level amateur athletes at places like the World University Games, US Olympic Training Center, and several professional football camps. She has also served as Head Athletic Trainer at Broadway High School and as clinical ATC for RMH Rehab Services, and Body Ease Physical Therapy, PC. Barbara spent 10 years as a clinical athletic trainer and through this work developed community education presentations and publications dealing with Exercise and Aging, Fall Prevention, Increasing the Functional Limits of Aging, and Children and Sports. Barbara and

her husband, Stuart, reside in the Lacey Springs area with their two children, Tyler and Cassie.Cook hails from Lewiston, Maine. She has a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Colby-Sawyer

College and a Master of Arts degree in Sport Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Sarah spent a summer as the head athletic trainer at J Robinson Intensive Basketball Camps and has experi-ence working with Division I Men’s Ice Hockey and Men’s Gymnastics. She resides in Harrisonburg with her menagerie of small animals. Her primary responsibilities are men’s and women’s soccer and softball.

Hale joined the Bridgewater staff in the spring of 2000 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. He has a Bach-elor’s degree in Health Science/Athletic Training and a Master’s degree in Health Science Education from James Madison University. Chase is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Education degree from Shenan-doah University in organizational leadership. For two years he was contracted from RMH Rehab Ser-vices, where he also worked within the occupational and physical therapy departments, to provide athletic training services at Bridgewater College. In 2002, Hale moved to a full-time faculty position in the Health and Exercise Science Department where he teaches kinesiology and athletic training courses. In addition to teaching, Professor Hale also serves as the clinical education coordinator for the athletic training education program. His career has had him working with collegiate baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball. Cur-rently, he works with the College’s field hockey, lacrosse, and tennis teams. Hale lives in Grottoes with his wife Ada and their three children Charlie, Stella, and Eliza.

Hicks has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bridgewater College, and a Master of Educa-tion degree from Northwestern State University in Health Promotion. She was certified by the Board of Certification in 1996 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an Athletic Trainer, Pharmacy Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician. Ellen has 11 years clinical athletic training experience; the last ten of those years were with RMH Rehab Services. She has also spent the last nine years working for Rockingham County Public Schools at Broadway High School as the Head Athletic

Trainer. Ellen resides in Port Republic and primar-ily works with Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, and Track & Field.

Powers comes to Bridgewater College with a va-riety of athletic training experience. As a graduate of North Dakota State University and James Mad-ision University, he has spent 27 years working in the clinical and secondary school environments. Athletic training has allowed him to work with several international sports teams in many different countries including the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta. Scott resides in Dayton with his wife Pam and their sons, Justin, Jake, Joshua and Jason.

The mission of the Bridgewater College’s Strength and Conditioning Program is to assist BC athletes in enhancing their athletic performance.

Our goal is to undertake this mission by reducing the risk of athletic injury, developing the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhancing the specific movement patterns related to their activity and addressing the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately we intend to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.

Joe Soltis is entering his eighth year as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Bridgewater College. Soltis comes to Bridgewater college as a USA Weightlifting Club Coach. He actively competes in Olympic Weightlifting and won his weight class at the Arnold Classic in 2009.

Soltis played running back for Emory & Henry and spent four years as an assistant coach at Glenvar High School in Salem, Va. from 1990-94.

Soltis is also the Offensive Coordinator for the Bridgewater College Football team. He re-sides in Bridgewater and is married to the former April Fifer, a 2004 Bridgewater graduate and a teacher in the Rockingham County Public Schools.

Stephon Healey will begin his seventh year as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Co-ordinator. Healey came to the States from London, England. Healey studied as an intern under both Keith Morgan at the National Sports Center in Crystal Palace, London and with Edgar Curtis at the Leeds Rhinos (professional rugby team). Healey has experience in competing and coaching at both Powerlifting and Olympic lifting meets.

Healey played collegiate football at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A graduate from the University of Greenwich (London), Healey has his undergraduate degree in Education and Human Movement Studies. Healey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified USA Weightlifting club coach.

Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14- member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country.

The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to Sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The confer-ence expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999.

Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, base-ball, women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
