Director’s MessageWelcome to the 2010 win-ter recreation programguide. The Recreation Master Planadopted by City Council in2008 has been an excellenttool in guiding the recre-ation division during the last2 years and I can say thatmany of the 67 action steps

identified have been completed. In particular theplan recommended the establishment of northand south side recreation hubs. Willie O'Ree Placeis well established with a twin pad arena, fitnesscentre, four beach volleyball courts and a celebra-tion of sport hall. The Grant • Harvey Centre con-struction is underway and this site will house atwin pad arena, a six court indoor tennis facility, atwo acre dog park and an artificial turf athleticsport field. These two locations will serve alldemographics of the community very well formany years. Recreation staff is working hard at developingnew programs targeting children and youth. Theyare working with partners and with the communi-ty to develop and communicate policies andprocesses that support access to recreation at lowor no-cost to all residents. This is in keeping withour “in motion” health and wellness initiativesand very important to our department.I encourage everyone to take advantage of themany programs and activities offered in this year’sguide. One of our goals is to grow the awarenessof the power and benefits of recreation. To this end I want to wish you a fun filled, safeand healthy winter.Wayne W.
