Deirdre Moore enters her third season as head coach for the C.W. Post women’s basketball team. Last season, the Pioneers collectively put forth their best season in recent memory when they posted a 20-9 overall record – its highest win total since the 1987-88 season. C.W. Post was 9-3 when playing away from the Pratt. In addition, junior guard Janea Aiken was voted both the ECC and ECAC Player of the Year. The Pioneers also boasted three 1,000 career point scorers in Aiken, Gina Catherall and Jasmine Moore. In her first season at the helm in 2008-09, Moore coached the Pioneers to a 13-14 overall record with a 10-8 clip in conference play. C.W. Post advanced to the semifinal round of the East Coast Conference Championships after an 83-67 win over Bridgeport in the quarterfinals. At the conclusion of the season, the Pioneers boasted three all-conference selections, including senior Whitney Murrer, who was also named Second Team All-Met and went on to play for the Gigantes de Carolina of the Puerto Rican basketball league. Prior to her appointment as head coach, Moore served

11 years as an assistant coach for the Pioneers. She worked primarily with the back court and helped the Pioneers post a record of 166-152. This included an appearance at the NCAA tournament in the 2000-01 season, and appearances in the East Coast Conference Championships in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Moore recruited 1,000 point scorers Basimah Thompson and Thalia Jackson to the program. Moore also worked as a mathematics special education teacher for 11 years in Queens, and is currently working to-wards earning another master’s degrees in electrical engineer-ing. In addition to her involvement with numerous camps, clinics, and community outreach programs, she has been involved with the Empire State games since 2000, coaching three different teams in the summer competition. She helped the New York City region team achieve a gold medal finish for the first time in 19 years. Moore has also lent her expertise to the C.W. Post Mathematics and Physics departments, serving as a tutor. Moore serves on the Employer Advisory Board (EAB), which works closely with employers from all backgrounds at different locations on Long Island. The EAB puts together programs to help all students connect with employers and educate students as to appropriate ways to act when em-ployed as well as help them learn how to network. Monthly programs are held to benefit all students at C.W. Post and the program sponsors a Women’s Achievement dinner each year. Moore was also a member of A-SAAC (Academic Stu-dent Affairs Advisory committee). This committee planned different programs to enhance the academic success and achievement of our current students. Some projects included choosing books for incoming freshmen to read in College 101 as well as putting together information for professors on how to deal with difficult behaviors in the classroom. Moore serves as a liaison between athletics and academic counsel and helps organize student athlete registrations online by enlisting the help of academic counseling. She also sets up academic tutoring for student athletes when requested. The Elmont, N.Y., native played her collegiate career as point guard for the Pioneers from 1992-96. She tallied 276 assists, placing tenth on the team’s all-time list. Moore gradu-ated from C.W. Post in 1996 with a degree in pre-engineering/math and physics. She earned her master’s degree from C.W. Post in Math Education.

C.W. Post head women’s basketball coach Deir-dre Moore is excited about the upcoming 2010-11 season and brings in a team that is deep in tal-ent, though she stresses there is a lot of work to be done between now and the start of the season. Picked to finish first in the East Coast Confer-ence preseason poll with five first-place votes, the Pioneers return a strong core of three starters, in-cluding last season’s top scorers Janea aiken (St. Albans, N.Y.) and Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) as well as top rebounder Alyssa Lombardi (New Fairfield, Conn.). Aiken, Joyner and Lombardi were starters in last season’s lineup whom Moore describes as “the big three”. Aiken was named the ECC Preseason Player of the Year and is arguably the best all-around player in the league. She led the league in scoring (16.6
pts/gm) and is looking to build on last year’s suc-cess. She returns with more confidence and will set the tempo on the court. Joyner is described by Moore as the leader of the team both vocally and by example. Joyner averaged 12.1 points a game and scored 20 or more points on four occasions and is working to score 14-15 points a game for the Pioneers.
GUarDs Junior Noelle Pawlicki (Staten Island, N.Y.) is looking to bounce back from last season where she averaged just over 17 minutes and 6.1 points a game. She is slated to run at the guard spot and is a great shooter and can create offense off the dribble with mismatches. Sophomore Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) is expected to step up at the point guard position and will work to increase her minutes on the floor. Moore describes her as a “dead-red shooter” that can run the offense well. Caggiano saw action in 27 games last season and averaged 1.7 points a game.
forWarDs Sophomore forward Nicole Marciniak (Brook-lyn, N.Y.) was a strong presence under the basket last season and led the team with 17 blocks while averaging 5.3 points a game. She worked hard over the offseason and returns in great shape. With her ability to score inside and out, she is a key player with the potential to be all-conference. The Pioneers will receive a boost with the return of senior forward Anthia Smith (Elmira, N.Y.), who is finally healthy to play solid minutes this season. With her ability to stand firm under-neath and shoot the ball, Moore predicts Smith to be a “double-double machine” on the court. Senior forward Shatima Greer (Central Islip, N.Y.) struggled in her first season after transferring from Suffolk but has become more acclimated to the Pioneers’ style of play and is extremely athletic and should perform well this season. Greer played in 28 games last season and made one start, averag-ing eight minutes a game.

neWComers Moore brings in four incoming freshmen and a transfer that will all push for playing time this season. Quianna Tiggle (Bowie, Md.) transfers in from Washington Adven-tist. Tiggle has great size, can shoot the three and is a “pitbull point guard”, says Moore. She played in 24 games last season for the Shock, making 12 starts, and averaged 4.5 points a game. Freshman guard ke-nyatta Sears (Hampton, Va.) displays great ath-leticism and raw ability. Moore describes her as a gym rat and a hard worker. Freshman guard Shayna Gatling (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) brings size to the position with her 5-foot-10 frame and has a quick step and can penetrate to the basket. She has been a pleasant surprise for the coaching staff during preseason and has the potential to do well. Freshman center/forward Nijah LaCourt (Bronx, N.Y.) has a giant presence on the boards with her 6-foot-1 size and is described by Moore as a “true blue shot blocker”. She can rebound well and is a good defender. Freshman guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) has great size and is athletic. She can shoot from three-point range well and adds depth and the guard position.

2010-11 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Founded as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1989 and rechristened the East Coast Conference in July 2006, the ECC was formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic competition among member institutions and to assist them in integrat-ing athletics into their academic program in a fiscally sound way. The ECC is committed to the highest standards of scholarship, sportsmanship, teamwork, and citizenship. Its mission is to promote the total person concept in its student-athletes, which stresses the abilities to excel in academic achievement, ath-letic competition, and positive character traits. East Coast Conference (www.eccsports.org) mem-bers for 2010-11 include: University of Bridgeport (Conn); C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University (Brookville, N.Y.); Dowling College (Oakdale, N.Y.); Mercy College (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.); Molloy College (Rockville Centre, N.Y.); New York Institute of Tech-nology (Old Westbury, N.Y); Queens College (Flush-ing, N.Y.); and St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, N.Y.). The ECC sponsors the following championship sports: baseball; men’s and women’s basketball; men’s and women’s cross country; men’s and women’s la-crosse; softball; men’s and women’s tennis; men’s and women’s soccer; and women’s volleyball. The East Coast Conference is a proud member of the NCAA and Division II. Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008. A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduates and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program develop-ment, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.
His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research op-portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philos-ophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including “Humpbacks of Hawai’i: The Long Journey Back.”

Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard University, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia Uni-versity on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis Uni-versity as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.
The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edi-tion, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005. Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom-plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.

Bryan Collins is in his fifth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins’ lead-ership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels. During Collins’ tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 22 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women’s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams. This past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, women’s swimming, baseball, men’s lacrosse, softball and women’s lacrosse teams all participated in NCAA tournaments.
C.W. Post boasts many of the most top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup
standings for 2009-10, the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. Among the efforts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the 2008-09 academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service.
Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. The department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all the outdoor athletic fields have undergone improvements to their playing surface. The Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff. A former student-athlete at St. John’s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987. Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (15) and daughter, Megan (10).
