sChOOl nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChOOl COlOrs

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. On the COver

head COaCh

GUy hardakerIn his sixth year as Central Oklahoma’s

head coach is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender.

A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a long stint as a high school boys basketball coach and is 110-45 in five years with the Bronchos.

He’s led UCO to four straight Division II national tournament appearances and a school-record four consecutive 20-win seasons. Hardaker’s Bronchos were first (twice) or second (three times) in the Lone Star Conference North Division the previous five years while also finishing runner-up in the LSC Tournament three times.

UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runner-up in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and then really took off the next season.

The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth.

UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history.

The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year.

UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finishing a best-ever 27-6.

Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 2009-10, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round.

Guy’s best coaching performance came last year when a team featur-ing just one senior and missing six players who suffered season-ending injuries used a stirring late-season run to make the second Sweet 16 appearance in school history.

The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up, pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals

before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO’s inspired run ended there to finish a 22-10 campaign.

Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993.

Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS.

Guy was a three-year baseball star at UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving follow-ing his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phillies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level.

He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is married (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

Born: June 27, 1963.High School Education: Jones (Okla.) High SchoolCollege Education: University of Central Oklahoma, B.S. in

ashley BeCkley

Serving as a student assistant coach this year is former Central Oklahoma standout Ashley Beckley, who ended her career last season as one of the school’s all-time best players.

Beckley was a three-year starter for the Bronchos, earning second-team All-Lone Star Conference North Division honors as a sopho-

more before claiming first-team accolades her last two years. She was the LSC North Division Player of the Year and a third-team

All-American last season after averaging a league-high 19.5 points and 8.6 rebounds a game in leading UCO to a 22-10 record and the Sweet 16.

Beckley set school records for points (623), free throws made (199) and free throws attempted (261) last year. She holds UCO career records for free throws made (479) and attempted (698) while ranking in the top four in four other categories -- points (2nd, 1,627), field goals made (2nd, 573), field goals attempted (2nd, 1,175) and rebounds (4th, 676).

Bill shaw

In his fourth year as Central Oklahoma’s assistant coach is Bill Shaw who has helped lead the Bronchos to three consecutive national tournament appearances.

Shaw has played a big role the past three years as UCO has gone 71-24, following up a school-record 27-6 cam-paign in 2008-09 with a 22-8 and 22-10 seasons the last two years. The Bronchos have made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II national tournament twice in that span, in 2009 and ‘11.

Bill was an assistant boys basketball coach at Santa Fe High School from 1999-07, serving all but one of those seasons as Guy Hardaker’s top aide. He helped lead the Wolves to four straight regional championships and three Class 6A state tournament appearances, with the 2004-05 team winning the state title.

Shaw also coached the boys tennis team from 2002-07, taking SFHS to the state tournament every season and placing as high as third.

A 1982 graduate of Oklahoma State, Shaw was co-owner of a restaurant in Enid until going to Santa Fe as a teacher/coach in 1997 and was in private business for one year before coming to UCO.

Bill is married (Patricia) and has two children (Andy and Hayden).

Helping the Central Oklahoma program as a student assistant for the fifth consecutive year is Krista Rice.

Rice has helped lead the Bronchos to an 88-35 record the past four years, with UCO having won two Lone Star Conference North Division titles and made four consecutive NCAA Divi-

sion II national tournament appearances.Rice was a member of the Edmond Santa Fe basketball team that

finished as state runner-up in 2006 and she joined head coach Guy Hardaker’s staff at UCO the following year.

2011-12 UCO BasketBall

lenty of experienced players are on the roster and Central Oklahoma has high hopes for 2011-12, with the Bronchos looking to make a fifth straight NCAA Division II national tournament appearance.

UCO has back six players from last year’s 22-10 team that used a late-season surge to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time in three years and also returns four previous let-terwinners who sat out last year with injury.

Add in two other redshirts from last year along with a pair of talented freshmen and it’s easy to see the reason for opti-mism, though the loss of two senior veterans to injury will obviously be felt.

Mixing everything together and finding the right combination won’t be easy, but there’s no doubt that sixth-year head coach Guy Hardaker will once again have the Bronchos ready to go.

“We have a lot of questions to answer, but we’re looking for-ward to the season and think we can do some good things,” said Harda-ker, who has a 110-45 career record at UCO. “Even though we have several returning players, most didn’t practice last season due to injury and in a lot of ways it feels like a new team.”

“We need to learn to share playing time and we also need to adjust to a more up-tempo style of play. And we’ll need to develop team chemistry like we finished with last season.”

Players back from last year are senior Heather Davis, junior Alex Richard-son and sophomores Britney Morgan, Tarrington Oakes, Paige Locke and Autumn Huffman.

Richardson became a dominating force down the stretch last year when the 6-foot-2 center took over with her inside scoring and rebounding abilities. She averaged 12.9 points and 6.9 rebounds a game for the season -- including 22.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in six post-season games -- and much more is expected this winter.

Morgan stepped in as a true freshman and started all season in running the offensive attack. The aggressive youngster averaged 9.6 points, 3.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds a contest while making 57 3-pointers and will be even better this year.

Davis averaged 4.5 points and 2.7 rebounds while playing in all 32 games and Oakes added 5.2 points, 3.4 assists and 2.7 rebounds before going out with injury after 18 games.

PseasOn OUtlOOk

Locke and Huffman saw limited playing time last year and will be looking to contribute more this winter.

The Bronchos will probably be without senior standouts Courtney Allen and Alyssa Fuxa, who were injured dur-ing pre-season drills. Fuxa averaged 11.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a contest last season and Allen added 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds with a team-high 64 treys. Both have redshirt years available.

Set to return to action after sitting out last year is senior Kasey Tweed, junior Savannah Hamilton and sophomores Jill Bryan and Rachel New.

The hard-nosed Tweed has been a part-time starter through-out her 82-game career at UCO and gives the Bronchos

plenty of experience at guard, while Hamilton is ready to earn a starting role this season and should be a

prime scoring threat.Bryan played in every game as a fresh-

man two years ago and has great versatility, with New set to provide

quality depth at point guard.Redshirt freshman Paiten

Taylor is a talented inside player who will vie for a start-ing berth after missing last year to injury and experienced junior Courtney Harper will also contribute following a redshirt year after transferring.

Freshmen Chelsi Dennis and Chelsea Robinson are the

lone newcomers on the roster, with both capable of helping im-

mediately.A rugged schedule that has UCO

playing just eight home games will be a tough challenge to overcome, as will having no conference to compete in. The Bronchos will play as a Division II independent this season before moving into the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012-13.

“We’ll be playing in six different states with a lot of road games,” Hardaker said. “We’ll have to be great and can’t afford to drop more than a handful of games if we expect to get in the post-season.”

But making it to the national tournament is obviously the goal for the Bronchos, who have won 95 games the past four years in advancing to the playoffs each time.

“We want to get better every day and develop some tough-ness,” Hardaker said. “Our goal is obviously to get back to the NCAA tournament and we’re going to work hard to put ourselves in the position to do just that.”

A second-half surge led to a fourth straight national tournament ap-pearance for Central Oklahoma, with the Bronchos making it all the way to the South Central Regional finals for their second Sweet 16 showing in three years.

The Bronchos were 6-5 at one point in the season before a seven-game winning streak ignited the late surge that led to a 22-10 finish. UCO ended its association with the Lone Star Conference by finishing second in the LSC North Division and followed with a runner-up showing in the LSC Tournament, losing a 74-73 finals decision to Texas Woman’s.

Central went to the national tournament as the fifth seed in the eight-team South Central Regional, but knocked off No. 4 seed Washburn and top-seeded Northeastern State to make the finals before falling to Northwest Missouri.

Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II.

The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II.

UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80.

The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament.

UCO captured the Region IV Tournament crown with wins over Texas Christian (86-71), Ouchita Baptist (79-73) and Centenary (79-72) and then defeated Hofstra, 73-66, to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Francis-Marion, 91-87.

UCO didn’t return to national tournament play again until 2007-08,

when the Bronchos earned their first NCAA Division II playoff bid with an at-large berth into the South Central Regional.

Coach Guy Hardaker’s crew knocked off St. Mary’s 75-73 in over-time in the first round before being eliminated by Washburn, 73-66.

UCO went back to the Division II national tournament in 2008-09, advancing to the Sweet 16 in making the South Central Regional finals.

The Bronchos opened with a 68-66 overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma and then got past Washburn 72-63 in the semifinals before falling to host West Texas A&M 65-52 in the regional championship.

UCO made it back to the playoffs again in 2009-10, but fell to Northeastern State in the first round, 54-52.

The Bronchos qualified for the fourth straight time last year and advanced to the Sweet 16 with back-to-back upsets, knocking off Washburn 65-64 and host Northeastern State 68-60 before falling in the regional finals to Northwest Missouri, 82-70.

Central Oklahoma plays all its home basketball games inside Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors on Jan. 8, 1965 when the UCO men’s team downed intrastate rival Northeastern State 64-52.

UCO’s women started playing in the 3,000-seat facility in 1980 and are 224-154 (.593) in 30 years, including a 46-13 mark over the past five seasons.

Hamilton Field was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time UCO coach and ath-letic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The facility underwent extensive renovation before the 2001-02 season, with new chairback seats installed around the floor level.

Hamilton Field House is also the home facility for the volleyball and wrestling teams and numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

Central Oklahoma will compete as an NCAA Division II indepen-dent in all sports during the 2011-12 school year before joining the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assocition in 2012-13.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institu-tions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first orga-nized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 99 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts cham-pionships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, base-ball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soccer, bas-ketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pitts-burg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA re-organized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

the miD-AmeriCA interColleGiAte AthletiCs AssoCiAtionState), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Mis-souri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in

1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerig-

ter took over.Southwest Baptist brought mem-

bership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expansion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA following the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in

the 1991-92 season.Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996,

Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006,

NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invita-tions to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kear-ney and Lindenwood.

With the departure of Nebraska-Omaha in 2011, the current mem-bership of the MIAA is at 15 schools. UCO, Lindenwood, Nebraska Kearney and Northeastern State will begin league play in 2012-13.
