A preserved and easily accessible natural environment awaits you in a land oflakes and hills. You will find the diversity of places to visit enchanting: lakes, waterfalls, rivers, caves, viewpoints…

Some sites like the Plateau of 7 lakes and Hérisson waterfalls are classified asa « great natural site ».In low moutains, the wealth of its ecosystems has led to proposing this land as one of the largest Natura 2000 sites in France.

our nature :

WaterfallsThe Hérisson

waterfallsGreat natural site (B8)The Hérisson (805 m altitude) isinstalled in a valley surroundedby cliffs. The course of itswaters (15 km) rushes down thebackwater in a series of 31 fallsbefore crossing Lakes Val andChambly. The Hérisson thusdescends 280 m over a distanceof 3 km. This is the opportunityfor a walk on the path along theriver (7.5 km one way and return/ 2 hours and fifty minutes to see

all the falls). There you canadmire the multitude of water-falls, basins and caves meetingyour eyes. At every step of the journey, takethe time to listen to the soothingsound of running water (at Sautof Moulin Jeunet, Saut of Forge,Saut of Château Garnier or GourBleu)... Or to gaze at the impres-sive Cascade of Éventail (65m),Grand Saut (60m) and SautGirard (35m) waterfalls. Bravest people can pass underthe Grand Saut, whose form islike a tail of horse!Pay attention to the ruins ofcereal mills, old ironwork andnail factories (From the 15thCentury, the valley had a strong

historical background, usingwater energy). On the path, you will find theLacuzon cave, which was theheadquarters of the famouscaptain Lacuzon while fightingfor independence of theFranche – Comtéregion in the

17th Century. For more detailed information, you can visit the house ofwaterfalls located next tocascade of Éventail (infor-mation screens, museogra-phic space).

Waterfall ofQuinquenouille (G3)A marked path (8.5 km)leaving Chatonnay(direction Dramelay)will make you disco-ver this nice fall (35m.) as well as thesmall medieval brid-ge going over theDard.

Giants passing and fall ofSaisse (C5)In Pont de Poitte, at the level ofthe bridge crossing the village, stop for a moment and look atthe “Giants’ Cauldron”. In reali-ty, these whirlpools were for-med over time thanks to thecombined forces of the Ainrapids and stones that byrepeated friction dug out therock. In the harbour of Saisse, you will discover the spectacu-lar way that the Ain falls intoLake Vouglans: this is the

Saisse fall, well known tofishermen. Itis mostimpressive inwinter.

Pratical information about Hérisson walk (open all year):• Time and distance of the whole path: 2h50 / 7.8 km / 255 metres of difference in height. You can

download the path of Hérisson waterfalls in our website www.juralacs.com • The path is not a circuit, you must go to one way and return (you must go back to your departure

to reach your car).• It’s a walking path, it is advisable to wear walking shoes.• Do not go out of the marked paths (be careful with children).• For babies, take a baby sling (path is not possible with push chair).• Respect fauna and flora.

Access to waterfalls:3 ways to access the waterfalls:• Parking of Eventail (access to the house of waterfalls): from Doucier, take road D326 and enterValley of Hérisson.• Parking of Saut de la Forge: access from the center of Bonlieu.• Parking of Saut Girard: go to Ilay and Hameau de La Fromagerie by road D39 or D75.

LakeVouglans (C5 to G5)Third largest dam reservoir inFrance with its length of 35 km. Itwas flooded in 1968, coveringthe Ain valley. Its turquoise bluewater will make you forget thedestiny of the villages and theVaucluse charterhouse sunk atthe bottom of the former valley.Today, the lake is a paradise forswimmers, fishers, walkers andlovers of water activities.

Lake Chalain(A7)A glacial lake, this is the largestnatural lake in the Jura.Neolithic vestiges were excep-tionally preserved under thelevel of the lake (villages withhouses built on piles 3000 yearsBC). You can not visit thearchaeological site. For more information:www.chalain.culture.gouv.fr.Today, lake Chalain has largefacilities to host tourists andsportsmen (www.lac-cha-

lain.com). Nice point of viewfrom belvedere of Fontenu.

Lakes of ClairvauxLes Lacs (C6 and D6)The small, private lake bears itsname well since it has a surfaceof 17.1 ha, while the large onehas 56.5 ha. Under the water ofthe latter, the remains of a laketown have been discovered(exhibition in summer in « salledes fêtes »). Next to the village, the grand lake has a lot of facili-ties for lovers of water activities(handicap access to water).

Lake Chambly (B7)Very pretty, small, wild-lookinglake (35 ha) with its shores bor-dered with reeds and its marshyapproaches (private property).

Lake Val (B7)Situated at the bottom ofHérisson falls, the lake Val is the

first step of an already tortuousroute travelled by the torrentcalled “le Hérisson”. Be careful, whirlpools make it dangerous.Nice point of view from belvede-re of Dame Blanche.
