Dear Family and Friends of CardinalNewman High School,

It is with great joy and hopeful anticipation that we begin the 50th year of Cardinal Newman’s outstanding tradition of educational excellence in Palm Beach County. So many of our alumni bear witness to the extraordinary worth and importance of a value oriented, academically challenging, and nurturing Catholic education. As we embark upon our 50th year of serving the people of Palm Beach County we celebrate the achievements, successes, and endeavors of all of our alumni. We are grateful to the many families who have chosen to be a part of this special community over the past 50 years. You have shared in our vision of spiritual, academic and athletic excellence and have supported our efforts to bring this vision to all of our students.

The current student body of Cardinal Newman continues to inspire us to dedicate ourselves to the mission and vision of Catholic education. We are blessed with students who excel in so many ways and reach out to the greater community in a spirit of loving service inspired by the dedicated faculty and staff of Cardinal Newman. Our students are the heart of our community and our faculty and staff are the backbone that enable us to realize and bring to fruition our mission.

We are pleased to present you with the 2009-2010 school year Annual Report. In reviewing this report, you will see that your philanthropic support of Cardinal Newman is essential to our success in continuing our mission to educate the whole person - spirit, mind, and body according to the Gospel values of Jesus Christ. The school receives no subsidies from the diocese. As a result, we depend on the generosity of donors to supplement revenues generated from tuition and fees. Cardinal Newman has been able to fulfill our vision of excellence because of your support. We thank you for giving your time, talent, and treasure to ensure our continued response to the Gospel message. We will continue to remember our students, parents, alumni, and benefactors at our school liturgies.

We look forward to your continued support during the 2010-2011 school year. May God continue to bestow His blessings on the Cardinal Newman Family.

Sincerely in Christ,

Rev. David W. CarrPresident

Since 1961, Cardinal Newman has offered a challenging curriculum that fulfills our mission: to educate the whole person – spirit, mind, and body – according to the Gospel values of Jesus Christ. Because of our holistic approach to education, our thousands of graduates have excelled in all aspects of life. We are now embarking on our fiftieth year of providing a quality Catholic education to the greater Palm Beach community. Our strategic plan, formulated in the 2008-2009 school year, is a concrete blueprint for growth and future success. I am pleased to announce that this school year we will be embarking on the path to be a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. This process will challenge us to build upon our current successes as we strive to be the best Catholic high school in the nation!

Our academic program includes courses in the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Our Learning Strategies program assists students who need additional English, math, and study skills. Our students are challenged not only in the classroom, however! Over 26 athletic teams, numerous activities, three National Honor Societies, and required community-service programs offer our students a multitude of opportunities for personal growth. Finally, our Campus Ministry and Religion departments offer a solid Catholic education and provide a moral foundation for an ever-challenging world.

Our future success will not be possible without the extraordinary support, as evidenced in the following pages, from the Cardinal Newman Family. We are grateful for the support of our parents, alumni, and all benefactors of the school. It is through such support that Cardinal Newman High School is a “community of faith, with a commitment to excellence!”

Sincerely yours in Christ,

John F. Clarke, Principal

Advisory BoardDear Cardinal Newman Friends and Family:

This past year has been an amazing year for Cardinal Newman and for me as Board Chair. The approach of our 50th anniversary, the Jubilee Anniversary for a Catholic high school, has brought home the importance of rallying as a cohesive community to address the challenges we face if we are to continue the Crusader Legacy for the next 50 years. No small task. That said, it has been an immensely rewarding year seeing current parents, parents of alumni, alumni and friends demonstrate a renewed sense of commitment giving generously of “time, talent and treasure.” A wealth of support allowed us to address issues such as enrollment and the need to increase financial aid, and urgently needed renovations combined with a ramped up facilities maintenance program.

We look forward to another productive year. I want to emphasize the importance of our Annual Crusader Fund and the need for support from every quarter toward that initiative. The Annual Crusader Fund will be the cornerstone of our future fundraising efforts. The ACF provides vitally needed unrestricted support for the high school. It allows us to close the gap between tuition and the cost of educating each young person at CNHS. It subsidizes operations and helps to balance the budget, which in turns allows us to offer financial aid to the extent we can. It is the mission of the high school to offer private Catholic secondary education to every student who qualifies to attend. Truly, we believe parents in this county cannot make a better investment in their young people than to send them to Cardinal Newman High School recognized for its academic excellence and robust extracurricular opportunities offered in a safe and nurturing environment. And it’s even more than that. We look to our community of supporters who feel passionately that CN is and has been doing something special for the past 50 years to join us, working together to ensure the continued legacy of Cardinal Newman High School.

Thank you for your support.

Yours truly,

Gerard Arsenault Advisory Board Chair

Office of Institutional AdvancementGreetings from the Office of Institutional Advancement!

The FY 2009-2010 was a great year for fundraising at Cardinal Newman High School. CNHS realized many increases in programmatic fundraising. The “Triple Crown” Newman Night Auction Gala had a banner year clearing a quarter-million dollars in revenue for the high school. Likewise, athletics and Varsity Club experienced an abundant year of generous gift giving from supporters, and kept pace handily with the Auction. Giving to scholarships and financial aid was also robust. Perhaps the most surprising was more than $700,000 in pledges and donations that came in to launch renovations, which began with the cafeteria during the summer.

For the coming year, you will see a slight shift in emphasis with new branding of our annual appeal, now called the Annual Crusader Fund. This is very exciting for us in the office and for those volunteers working with us. Schools the size and age of CNHS routinely run very effective annual giving programs. While holding to our course with the auction, varsity contributions and support for financial aid, we do wish to build a more robust annual giving program, which is perceived to be the cornerstone of a successful Catholic high school fundraising program. We are looking forward to the support we can garner through this effort and all that can be accomplished with this new infusion of resources.

Thank you to everyone who supported Cardinal Newman High School over the past year. We can’t thank you enough for sharing with us your commitment to Catholic education. We are deeply appreciative. Thank you.

Go Crusaders!

Major Fundraisers

Annual Giving AppealThe 2009-2010 appeal was chaired by Roberto (’82) and Ellen (’82) Acosta. They were assisted in their efforts by class representatives, Rob and Julie Reveley, Brian and Francine Stenz, John and Grace (’76) Rich, and Raul (’82) and Cathie Romaguera. The Alumni Chairs were Tim (’82) and Ada (’84) Hanlon and Daniel (’76) and Elizabeth (’77) Lewis. Many other parents volunteered to assist as homeroom representatives. In total, $68,769 was raised. The Annual Giving Appeal was a success due to the great leadership of the parent chairs and many class representatives. Newman students also participated in a phone campaign thanking the donors during the month of March. This year marked the last year of the Annual Giving Appeal as it is now branded as the Annual Crusader Fund.

2009 Alumni Classic Golf TournamentA great time was had by all who attended our 2009 Crusader Classic Alumni Golf Tournament which was held in October at Bear Lakes Country Club. Over 80 golfers participated in the event for Alumni, families and friends of Newman. Just over $11,000 was raised for the Sandy Butler-Golson Alumni Scholarship Program.

2010 Newman NightWow! What an event we had at the “Triple Crown” 2010 Newman Night. Through the generosity of our families, alumni, Crusader Community and local businesses, over $267,000 was raised in support of our school. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of our committee. A sincere thank you to our Honorary Chairpersons: Gail and Jay Higgins and our Triple Crown Co-Chairs, Brenda Burnette, Megan Gary and Melissa Tyner (’75), and all of our Triple Crown Auction Committee. This was an “over the top” event thanks to all who participated. We hope to see everyone for Newman Night 2011 on March 5 at the Kravis Center. This year’s auction will mark the beginning of our 50th year celebration. Honorary Co-Chairs will be Rob and Julie Reveley and Gerry (‘74) and Nancy Arsenault. Co-Chairs will be Mary Jo Higgins (‘76) and Pat Kent.

ActivitiesCardinal Newman High School provides students with additional opportunities for learning through participation in more than 25 extracurricular clubs and activities, as well as in a range of musical performance ensembles and one drama production per year. We believe that when students take advantage of these extracurricular opportunities they become more well-rounded leaders. While most of these are funded through tuition and fees, the clubs and fine arts department also depend on philanthropic support to ensure continuation of their activities. As important as it is for our students to participate, we also look each year for parent and family participation through financial gifts and donations of time and talent. With your support, we look forward to another successful year of activities for our students.

In the past year we have had many noteworthy student achievements:

AthleticsCrusader Athletics continued to see tremendous student participation during the school year of 2009-2010. The year was filled with many achievements that added to the Cardinal Newman tradition of athletic excellence.

Among these achievements was a repeat trip to the state finals by members of both our girls’ and boys’ tennis teams. Our boys’ golf team finished third in the state tournament and will return each of its team members for the 2010-2011 season, where they will be favored to win the state title. Our boys’ baseball team made an impact by compiling 20 wins while capturing yet another district championship.

Ryan Burke (’10, football) and J.R. Edwards (’10, baseball), signed athletic letters of intent with Lehigh University. Basketball all-stars Antonella Marino (’10) and Nikki Shaffer (’10) will continue their remarkable playing careers at St. Thomas University and Elmhurst College respectively.

Current and former Crusaders were featured on the sports pages of local and national newspapers not only as interscholastic standouts, but as outstanding collegiate and professional sports news-makers. Florida State University golfer Brooks Koepka (’08) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Golfer of the Year as a sophomore, following his freshman season selection as the ACC Rookie of the Year. Football standout Jacoby Ford (’05) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders. With Clemson’s CJ Spiller, Jacoby set an NCAA record for the most total all-purpose yards in a season by teammates. Cardinal Newman’s High School All-American Kicker, Brendon Gibbons (’09), is now playing in the Big 10 Conference for the Michigan Wolverine football team.

As a founding member of the Palm Beach County Athletic Conference, Cardinal Newman is the only non-public school affiliate. The PBCAC provides opportunities for our student-athletes to shine in competition against the very best high school athletes in Palm Beach County and beyond.

The enthusiasm and momentum which was highlighted in last year’s edition of the annual report has continued to grow. The Varsity Club has been very successful at coordinating volunteer assistance and fund-raising for our sports programs. A number of highly respected coaches have joined our coaching staffs. They have begun work with our teams as skilled, energetic team leaders. The most high profile of these coaches is second year Head Football Coach, and former University of Miami quarterback, Steve Walsh. Coach Walsh led the Hurricanes to a National Championship in 1987 before entering the NFL for eleven seasons. The progress that he and his staff have made in a relatively short time at Cardinal Newman has been tremendous.

God has created me to do Him some definite service;

He has committed some work to me

which He has not committed to another.

I have my mission; I never may know it in this life,

but I shall be told it in the next.

I have a part in a great work; I am a link in a chain,

a bond of connection between persons.

He has not created me for naught.

I shall do good, I shall do His work;

I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of

truth in my own place, while not intending it,

if I do but keep His commandments

and serve Him in my calling.
