On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California Univer-sity of Pennsylvania. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova Uni-versity, an MA and Ph.D. de-grees from Temple University in special and general rela-tivity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of Cali-fornia University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the depart-ment of physics, Dean of Uni-versity College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly pub-
lications in international journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Phys-ics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applica-tions have increased by 90%; average SAT scores have increased by 95 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 30%; and four-year gradu-ation rates have increased by 80%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Com-puter Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; three National champion-ship teams (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a new five-year capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibil-ity; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the cre-ation of the University Forum, a new governance structure; the adop-tion of a new general education curriculum; the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building and six modern new residence halls; the renovation/expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of major off-campus sites at Southpointe and at the Regional Enterprise Tower in down-town Pittsburgh. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Col-leges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown chil-dren and nine grandchildren. His hob-bies include piano, photography and sailing. President & Mrs. Armenti
Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan women’s basket-ball. I am confident that Coach Mark Swasey, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradi-tion and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus con-tinues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams have won statewide and regional titles and won our first Pennsylvania State Athletic Confer-ence’s (PSAC) Dixon Trophy for 2008-09. The Dixon Trophy is emblematic of athletic supremacy in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference—the PSAC, the premier Division II athletic conference in America today. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals be-hind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, a total of 167 California University of Pennsylvania student athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2009 edi-tion of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners re-gardless of the score. The same can be said of the coach-ing staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories, and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as Hamer Hall. Women’s Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the class-room. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeav-ors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates, and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2009-10 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

Entering his eighth season with the ath-letic program, Frank Bauer was promoted to Associate Vice President for Athletic Development prior to the start of the 2007-08 academic year. Through his fundraising efforts, the Vul-cans have enjoyed an unprecedented amount of athletic success that was high-lighted by the school’s first-ever Dixon Tro-phy last year. In addition to fundraising, he manages a staff of several full-time fundraisers and sports information profes-sionals. Bauer has a long-standing relation-ship with Cal U head football coach John Luckhardt, as he was a coach on Luck-hardt’s staff at nearby Washington & Jef-ferson College. Bauer served as a second-ary coach for the Presidents during their Stagg Bowl appearance in 1994.
A 1993 graduate of W&J, Bauer has also spent time as defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach at Geneva College when the school featured a scholarship football program and was member of the NAIA. He, along with current Cal U defensive coordinator and as-sociate head coach Mike Conway, coached the Golden Tornadoes’ No. 1-ranked defense in 2001. In addition to his work with Geneva, Bauer coached and handled football operations for the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe in 1998 and 1999 un-der current Penn State offensive coordinator Galen Hall. The Rhein Fire won the franchise’s first-ever World Bowl Championship in 1998 during Bauer’s stay. Bauer and his wife Karen reside in Chippewa, Pa., with their son, Josh, a freshman at Cal U this year.
Over the last 18 years as Athletic Director, Dr. Tom Pucci has guided California Uni-versity of Pennsylvania to unprecedented athletic success. Last season, the Cal U athletic depart-ment claimed the school’s first-ever Dixon Trophy, which is awarded annually to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) member with the most successful all-around athletic program. The Vulcans were also successful on a national scale, as they finished in the top 10 of the Direc-tor’s Cup for a second-straight year. Since taking the helm in 1991, the Vulcans have become a powerhouse in the PSAC and on a national level. Dur-ing Pucci’s tenure, Cal U has won NCAA Division II National Championships with back-to-back softball titles in 1997 and 1998 and women’s basketball in 2003-04.
Within the PSAC over the last 18 years, the Vulcans have won 53 PSAC West crowns, 28 PSAC titles and made 57 appearances in NCAA Tour-naments under Pucci. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Cal State University-Sacramento in 1969. He later earned his master’s de-gree in education from Pacific University before completing his doc-torate in secondary education and education administration from the University of New Mexico. Pucci moved to a career in athletic administration after a suc-cessful eight years as the head men’s tennis coach at the University of Arkansas. He guided the Razorbacks to three appearances in both the
ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATIONNCAA Round of 16 and NCAA Quarterfinals from 1979-84 with all of the teams finishing the season ranked in the top 10 nationally. Pucci also coached Arkansas to Southwest Conference Championships in 1980 and 1981. For his efforts with the Razorbacks, he was inducted into the Arkansas Hall of Honor this fall. He started his career in administration at Cal State-Sacramento, where he supervised the institution’s move to Division I in 1986. He then moved to South Carolina-Spartanburg, where he oversaw the Rifles’ move from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. Pucci and his wife Debbie reside in Beaufort, S.C., and are the parents of Michele, a Cal U graduate, and the late Camron.
Karen Hjerpe enters her seventh year as the Associate Athletic Director and 17th overall at California University of Pennsylvania. She originally joined the Vulcans’ athletics staff in 1993 as the head volleyball coach before being named Senior Woman Administrator the following year. Hjerpe coached the Cal U volleyball team for five years from 1993-97 before assuming the position of Athletic Busi-ness Manager. She was then promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2003. Hjerpe, who is one of only two vol-leyball coaches in school history with 100-plus career wins, serves as school’s coordinator of the CHAMPS/Like Skills program and the Student-Athlete Advi-sory Committee (SAAC). In addition to her duties with the athletics program, she teaches several on-line classes each
year. She has spoken at several national forums, including the 2003 NACWWA Fall Forum and the 2004 NCAA Convention. Hjerpe serves as the PSAC Athletic Director’s liaison for volleyball and is a former member of the NCAA Division II women’s volleyball committee. A 1991 graduate of PSAC West rival Gannon University, Hjerpe earned her undergraduate degree in accounting. She added a pair of master’s degrees from Cal U in business and performance en-hancement and injury prevention in the past decade. Hjerpe recently completed a terminal degree in instructional management and lead-ership at Robert Morris University. Hjerpe lives in Peters Twp., Pa., with her three children, Todd, Brooke and Erin.

California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes posted a banner year in athletic competition during the 2008-09 season, six PSAC West titles, four PSAC crowns and four NCAA regional trophies with eight team and 15 individual appearances in NCAA post-season play. In addition to athletic prowess, the Vulcans also excelled in the classroom. A total of 167 Cal U student athletes, representing all sports (fall, winter & spring), were named to the Spring 2009 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll. For the sixth-straight semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. During the Spring 2009 semester, Vul-can student-athletes compiled a 3.11 GPA the highest average since the Spring 2007 semester. Cal U also featured nine ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selec-tions, highlighted by the school’s first Academic All-American since 2006. To be eligible for the academic all-district honor, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative 3.20 GPA or higher, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games as a starter or an important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. In the spring, women’s cross country posted the highest team GPA at 3.71 and featured all nine runners on the Honor Roll. On the men’s side, the cross country team posted top GPA of the seven sports at 3.40 with seven runners holding a 3.00 GPA or better. In terms of pure numbers during the spring, football led all 16 sports with 27 representatives on the Honor Roll, followed by women’s soccer (21) and women’s track & field (19). Women’s cross country led all programs with 100 percent of its team (nine-of-nine) on the Honor Roll. SEASON OUTLOOK
PREVIEW
Senior guard Brooque Williams led the PSAC in scoring last year.
Junior Kayla Smith is a two-timeAll-PSAC West First-Team selection.
After a consecutive Elite Eight appearance and its eighth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Califor-nia University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team continues its stay as one of the pernnial powers in NCAA Division II. However, for the second-straight year, the Vulcans will feature a new head coach in Mark Swasey. A 10-year veteran as a head coach, Swasey is no stranger to the post-season as he guided his previous team to last year’s NCAA Division II National Championship game. Swasey inherits a program that returns a pair of preseason All-American candidates in senior guard Brooque Williams and junior forward Kayla Smith. The Vulcans also return a three-year starter at point guard in
Crystal Andrews. One of the most dynamic play-ers in the country, Williams was one of only five players in NCAA Division II to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds per game last season. The 5-8 guard led the PSAC and ranked ninth in the country with a career-high 21.9 points per game. Williams also was second in the league and among the national leaders with 10.4 rebounds and 3.6 steals per
game. A native of Pittsburgh, she enters her senior sea-son ranked fifth in school history with 1,526 points after scoring a league-record 744 points last year. With Williams attacking opponents with a slashing style of play, Smith dominates from the interior. A 5-11 forward, she was among the top 10 in the conference with career highs of 16.0 points and 8.9 rebounds. Smith is one of the most efficient scorers in the Atlantic Region, shooting 52.0 percent (220-of-423) from the field. After redshirting her first year on campus, the West Virginia na-tive has already scored 1,000 career points in only two seasons with the program. Andrews returns for her final season with the Vulcans after scoring 7.6 points per game in 2008-09. Last year, she directed the highest scoring offense in the league
with 152 assists. Also a skilled defensive player, Andrews led the league and was fifth in the nation with 3.8 steals per game. The John-stown native enters the season on pace to finish her career among the all-time leaders in assists and steals despite playing only three seasons for Cal U. Swasey and the coaching staff will look to fill the other two starting positions with redshirts and transfers. Redshirt sophomore Amy Johns provides versatil-ity with her skill set and 5-10 size. A 2,000-point scorer in high school, she led the WPIAL in scoring as a junior and committed to Division I Xavier. Guard Kiara Brown, another redshirt from last season, figures to see time as a starter after a high-scoring career while at Ambrdige. In terms of depth in the backcourt, sophomore guard Danielle Luckett should see increased playing time after averaging nearly 10 minutes per game off the bench as a freshman. The Vulcans also added a Division I transfer from North Carolina A&T in sophomore guard Taryn Russ. As a freshman in 2007-08, she appeared in 23 games for the Aggies before not playing last season. With the addition of Brown, Johns and several newcomers, Cal U features several strong perimeter players capable of shooting from beyond the arc. True freshman Megan Kermond from Australia figures to see significant action after displaying a strong outside shot during preseason camp. The Vulcans feature increased depth and experi-ence on the interior with the transfer of junior forward Tatianna Hall from Wright State, a Division I program in Ohio. While with the Raiders, Hall appeared in nearly 60 games over the last two years after playing for one of the top high school programs in Ohio. In addition to Hall, freshman forward Jasmine Murray will also see time at forward after starting on a state championship high school team in Virginia. With three core starters returning and the addition of several talented newcomers, Swasey will look to have the Vulcans again contending on not only the confer-ence and regional stage, but at the national level in his first year with the program.

After leading Franklin Pierce University (N.H.) to back-to-back NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances, Mark Swasey enters his first season as head coach of the California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball program in 2009-10. Swasey led the Ravens to the 2009 NCAA Division II national title game and a school record
29 wins. For his efforts, he was named Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/Russell East Region Coach of the Year after leading
Franklin Pierce to the Northeast-10 (NE-10) regular season and tournament championships, along with a second-straight Elite Eight appearance. Swasey, who was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame this fall, guided Franklin Pierce to unprecedented success during his seven-year tenure, compiling a 124-85 overall record (.593 winning percentage). Over the last four years, the Ravens posted an impressive 89-37 record (.706) with an 8-2 record in two NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, 2009). Overall, he holds a 180-111 (.619) career record in 10 seasons, which includes a three-year stint at Division III Norwich University (Vt.) prior to coaching Franklin Pierce.
HEAD COACH S w a s e y coached Franklin Pierce to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths, establishing the school record for wins each season and earning c o n s e c u t i v e NCAA Regional Championships. Last year, the Ravens posted a 29-6 overall record and opened Elite Eight play with an 88-73 win over Cal U before losing to Minnesota State University-Mankato in the highest scoring national championship game in NCAA Division II history, 103-94. While with Franklin Pierce, Swasey tutored two-time WBCA All-American and two-time NE-10 Player of the Year Johannah Leedham. Over the last two seasons, Leedham compiled 1,557 points and 440 rebounds and was selected the 2008 State Farm/WBCA Division II Player of the Year as only a sophomore. Swasey joined the Raven program prior to the 2002-03 season and in only his fourth year Swasey mentored Franklin Pierce to the 2006 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Championship – the school’s first post-season championship since the 1991-92 season. In addition to success on the court, Swasey’s teams at Franklin Pierce excelled in the classroom. Five players earned NE-10 All-Academic honors since the laurel first was awarded in 2004-05. During the 2007-08 campaign, the Ravens compiled a team grade-point average of 3.399 to rank among the top 25 in the nation. Before coming to Franklin Pierce, Swasey coached at Norwich for three years and guided the Lady Cadets to a 56-26 record (.683) and three appearances in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship game. A native of New Hampshire, Swasey boasts NAIA coaching experience as well. He served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Black Hills State University (S.D.) during 1998-99 season when the Jackets lost in the NAIA II Elite Eight to the eventual national champions. He initially started coaching at Keene State College (N.H.) in 1992 and earned his master’s degree in education while serving as an assistant coach for the Owls in their final years as a Division II program. Swasey, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Lyndon State College (Vt.), and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Addison Elizabeth and Avery Marie.

A former four-year starter at Penn State University, Jess Strom enters her fourth sea-son as an assistant coach with the California University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball program. While playing for the Lady Lions, Strom helped Penn State compile a 93-38 overall record (.710) with a 52-12 mark (.813) in Big Ten play. From 2002-05, the Lady Lions won a pair of Big Ten regular-season titles. Strom ranks third in Penn State history with 191 career three-pointers and 310 steals. She also finished her career among the all-time leaders in assists (776)
and points (1,466). During her collegiate career, Strom was one of the best free-throw shooters in Penn State history. She set single-game school records for most free-throws made, consecutive free-throws made and free-throw percentage after going a perfect 15-for-15 in 2005 against Minnesota. She holds the fifth (.877, 71-of-81) and sixth (.872, 129-of-148) best single-season free-throw percentages in Lady Lion history. A three-time All-Big Ten selection, Strom finished her PSU career as one of only four players to register 1,000 points and 750 assists in a career. California University Television (CUTV) is the University's cable tele-vision station, which is owned and oper-ated by the Student Association, Incorpo-rated. CUTV is seen in nearly 100,000 homes, 24 hours a day on the Charter Communications, Armstrong and AT&T cable systems. The mission of CUTV is to produce and provide programming of regional community interest, while providing valuable "hands-on" educational experience for interested students. This applied learning supports the mission and goals of California University, as well as the priorities and imperatives of the State System of Higher Education. Students can develop skills in television technology through experience in a vari-ety of technical areas including camera work, editing, direction and other production roles, as well as on-air talent positions. California University Television produces a variety of informa-tional, educational, and entertainment programs. For example: CUTV Newsletter - live news show, a variety of local government meetings including the Washington County Commissioners, a sci-ence show called Elements, an aerobics show - No Sweat, and many more. CUTV is heavily involved with the university and area high school sports coverage. Over the past several years, CUTV hasproduced all of California University’s football and basketball contests, as well as various volleyball, soccer, baseball and softball events. CUTV also produces a weekly coach’s show for the sport in season. CUTV also produces a High School Football Game of the Week, with several of these contests carried live to a statewide audience via PCN. To its credit, CUTV has been recognized by many national organizations. The National Association of Collegiate Broadcasters (NACB) awarded CUTV “Best in the Nation” for its news and sports, as well as station of the year, 1997-98. The station has also received multiple TELLY awards for its sports, news and documentary coverage. In addition, CUTV has received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, Commu-nicator, Videography and Axiem organizations. Offices and studios are located in the Natali Student Center. CUTV maintains a fully loaded production truck capable of producing multi-camera field events. The program employs a staff of three professionals and enjoys a student membership of over 40. For more information con-tact J.R. Wheeler, Assistant Dean of Student Services, Room 150 of the Natali Student Center, phone 724-938-4303 or e-mail: [email protected].
