Vitamin A is commonly known as the anti-infectivevitamin, because it is required for normal functioning of

Zinc A number of published studies show that if zinc lozenges are

taken within 24 hours of the onset of common cold symptoms,the severity and duration of cold miseries are significantlydiminished.55-58

Rhinoviruses are the medical term to define viruses that causethe common cold. Rhinoviruses attach to cell receptor sites insinus and throat tissues, become lodged in nose-throat cells,

and then replicate out of control.59 By binding to the samecell receptor sites as do cold viruses, zinc inhibits the ability ofrhinoviruses to take hold in the body.

The key here is to suck on two 24 mg zinc lozenges at the veryfirst symptom of a cold and continue doing this every two

waking hours. Once rhinoviruses bind to their receptor sites inthe nasal tissues and begin replicating, zinc lozenges lose theirefficacy.

Elderberry extract has traditionally been used to easecold and flu symptoms, sinus problems, fevers, and

muscle pain. In the 1980s, virologist MadelineMumcuoglu, Ph.D, researched how elderberry fights theflu. According to Mumcuoglu, flu viruses are covered bytiny protein spikes of hemagglutinin, which they use toattach to, and infect healthy human cells. Elderberryextract contains active substances that are able toprevent viral hemagglutinin, or the process of theinvading cells using their spike-like projections tointroduce its enzyme into healthy cell membranes. She

further noted that the viral enzyme is also neutralized inthe presence of elderberry extract.

Scientific research - Elderberry extract

In 1993, a team of Israeli scientists studied the

effect of elderberry on flu patients. During a flu

epidemic at an Israeli Kibbutz, half of the flu

patients were given elderberry syrup, the other

half a placebo. Within two days, 90% of the grouptreated with elderberry extract had a complete

recovery, whereas, it took 6 days for 91.7% of the

control group to recover.37

Olive leaf extract has been used effectively against viruses, retroviruses,bacterium, parasites, yeasts, protozoans, fungi, molds and other microbes anddiseases in laboratory testing. Olive leaf has a variety of active constituents

including several types of flavonoids (apigenin, luteolin, chrysoeriol, hesperidin,rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol)26 and the most abundant active ingredientcalled oleuropein, (pronounced oh-lee-or-oh-pin) which has proved to be apowerful antioxidant and antimicrobial.28,29 The components of olive leafextract inactivated every cold and flu virus they were tested against. Oleuropeinmay also have antibacterial properties. When unheated olives are brined in

order to preserve them, oleuropein is converted into another chemical calledelenolic acid. Elenolic acid has shown antibacterial actions against Lactobacilliand Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilus in a test tube study.30

An in vitro study revealed that oleuropein and its derivative hydroxytyrosol actas natural antibiotics against a range of bacteria. Most impressively, these twocomponents of olive leaf inhibited Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteriaresponsible for many hospital-acquired infections.31,32 Staphylococcus aureus isnotorious for its ability to mutate against antibiotics.

Astragalus enhances immune function by increasing the activity of certainwhite blood cells, which increases the production of antibodies. It also increases

the production of interferon (an anti-viral and anti-tumor agent naturallyproduced by the body) and stimulates natural killer cells.

In addition to boosting immunity, astragalus has antibacterial, adaptogenic, anti-

inflammatory, and antiviral effects.

According to James Duke, Ph.D., a leading authority on healing herbs, astragalus

increases production of the body's own antiviral compounds alpha-and gamma-interferon, which generally protect against viral invasion.16

Garlic

One recent study tested one capsule daily of an allicin-containing garlic

supplement (like Pure-Gar) from November through February on a group of146 volunteers. Half the group received the garlic while the unfortunate other

half got a placebo. The placebo group suffered 63% more common cold

infections compared to the garlic group. Even more significant, those in the garlic

group who did catch a cold suffered symptoms for an average of only 1.52 days

compared to 5.01 days for the placebo group. This placebo-controlled study

corroborates the benefits I have personally derived by taking much higher dosesof Pure-Gar as soon as cold symptoms present.

The conclusion of the doctors who conducted this garlic study was, An allicin-

containing supplement can prevent attack by the common cold virus.

Considering the number of people afflicted with a common cold each year, you

would think this would have been the lead news story of the day. Up until now,

the study has remained buried in a scientific journal, while the medical

establishment still states there is no cure for the common cold .

Tagamet is the brand name of what used to be the mostpopular drug to treat heartburn. Now that it is off patent,we refer to Tagamet by its generic name cimetidine. Alittle-known side effect ofcimetidi ne is that it inhibitsthe production ofT-suppressor cells.27 In doing so, itboosts immune function by preventing the immunesystem from turning itself down.

Cimetidine has shown other immune modulating effects

such as increasing natural killer cell activity and boostinglevels of natural immune stimulants interleukin-2 andgamma interferon.28-30 Human studies demonstratecimetidine's efficacy against herpes and viralwarts.27,31-34

Since cimetidine is safe for most people, taking800-1000 mg at night (or 200 mg three times a

day and then 400 mg at night) seems like aneffective therapy to temporarily turn up theimmune system. Cimetidine in 200 mg tablets canbe purchased over-the-counter at pharmacies.

The directions in the over-the-counter packageinsert say that up to 800 mg a day is safe, butsome published studies where cimetidine is usedas an anti-viral agent have used up to 1000 mg aday.35

In a groundbreaking study, the Journal of Nanotechnology has published a

study that found silver nanoparticles kills HIV-1 and is likely to kill virtually anyother virus. The study, which was conducted by the University of Texas andMexico University, is the first medical study to ever explore the benefits ofsilver nanoparticles, according to Physorg.

During the study, researchers used three different methods of limiting the sizeof the silver nanoparticles by using capping agents. The capping agents werefoamy carbon, poly (PVP), and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The particles

ranged in size from 1 to 10 nanometers depending on the method of capping.After incubating the HIV-1 virus at 37 C, the silver particles killed 100% of thevirus within 3 hours for all three methods. While further research is needed, researchers are optimistic that nanologicalsilver may be the silver bullet to kill viruses. The researchers in the study said

that they had already begin experiments using silver nanoparticles to kill whatis known as the super bug (Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus). Alreadyused as a topical antibiotic in the medical industry, silver may now come underconsideration as an alternative to drugs when it comes to fighting previouslyuntreatable viruses such as the Tamiflu resistant avian flu.

Hepatitis A, B, and C and all other strains of Hepatitis: thepatients needs 15 drops twice a day, but will not usuallytolerate 15 drops.
