2 Volleyball began as an intercollegiate sport at AASU in 1986

Sinceitsfoundingin1935,ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversityhascontinuedtodeveloptomeettheSavannahcommunity’seducational

needs.FromitsfirstlocationinArmstrongHouseindowntownSavannahtoitscurrenthomeonascenic268-acrelotoffofAbercorn,theuniversityhasbecomeoneofthefinesteducationalinstitutionsintheSouth-easternUnitedStates. ArmstrongJuniorCollegewasestablishedbytheMayorofSavannahandotherpublicofficialsin1935.HousedinthebeautifulandhistoricArmstrongHouse,agifttothecityfromthefamilyofGeorgeF.Arm-strong,ArmstrongJuniorCollegegrewovertheyearstooccupyeightadditionalbuildingsintheForsythParkandMontereySquareareas. In1959,asArmstrongCollegeofSavannah,itbecameatwo-yearunitoftheUniversitySystem.TheBoardofRegentsconferredfour-yearstatusonArmstrongin1964andthecollegemovedtoa250-acrelocation,agiftfromDonaldLivingstonandtheMillsB.LaneFoundation,inDecemberof1965.AdditionalbuildingsjoinedtheeightoriginalstructuresasArmstrongaddedprofessionalandgraduateprogramsandtripledinsize. InJulyof1996,theBoardofRegentsvotedtorenamethecol-legetoArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitytoreflectitsmissionandidentity.Theuniversity’sreputationofexcellenceisstillevidentinitsdedicationtostudents,withasupportiveenvironment. ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitywasfullyaccreditedasaseniorinstitutionbytheSouthernAssociationofCollegesandSchoolsinDecember,1968,withaccreditationretroactivetoJanuary1,1968,andwaslastreaccreditedinDecember,2002. Theuniversityoffersmorethanseventy-fiveacademicpro-gramsandmajorsintheCollegeofArtsandSciences,CollegeofHealthProfessions,CollegeofEducationandSchoolofComputing.Theacademiccommunityincludesapproximately7,000students

andmorethan400facultymembers.Enrollmenthasnearlydoubledinthelast15years,from3,700studentsin1990toitscurrentnumber. Acrosscampus,evidenceoftheuniversity’sgrowthcanbefoundinitsfacilities.Recentlycompletedprojectsincludethenearly30,000squarefootArmstrongCenterforContinu-ingEducationandCommunityEngagement,whichopenedthisfall;a$5milliondollarrenovationoftheLaneLibrary;abrandnewStudentRecreationFacilityanda14,500squarefootDentalHygieneclinicandCommunicativeDisordersCenter.CampuslifeisabundantwithCompassPoint,Uni-versityCrossingsandUniversityTerraceofferingon-campus,two-andfour-bedroomfurnishedapartmentsfor856students. TheathleticdepartmentofArmstrongAtlanticStateUni-versityishousedintheArmstrongSportsCenter,completedin1995.TheSportsCenterincludesofficesforthephysicaleducationdepartment,trainingroomandweightroomareas,basketballcourts,indoortrackandofficesforcoachesandathleticdepartmentpersonnel.ThebuildingplayedhosttothePeachBeltConference’sbasketballtournamentin1998and1999andhostsseveralin-seasontournamentseachyear.Constructionofawomen’sfieldhouseforsoccerandsoftballwascompletedinthespringof2007. AASUsponsorstenintercollegiatesportsandisachartermemberofthePeachBeltConference,formedin1991.Wom-en’ssoccerandwomen’sgolfdebutedin2005-06,joiningmen’sandwomen’sbasketball,volleyball,baseball,men’sandwomen’stennis,men’sgolfandsoftballassportsthatAASUsponsors.In2007-08,theAASUmen’sandwomen’stennisteamseachcapturedNCAADivisionIINationalChampion-ships,becomingjustthesecondschoolinNCAAhistorytowinbothtitlesinthesameyear. Continuingamissionbegunin1935,ArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversitytodayservesarichgamutoftraditionalandnon-traditionalstudents.Forty-threepercentofAASU’sstu-dentbodyarefromtheSavannah-Chathamarea,whileotherscomefromaroundthestate,nationandworld.AllhavecometoSavannahtoexperienceandthriveonthecampusofoneofthefastestdevelopinghigherlearninginstitutionsinthenation-tobeapartofArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity.

Dr.EddieAenchbacherbeginshisthirteenthfullyearastheathleticdirectorforArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity. Dr.Aenchbacher’sresponsibilitiesincludeoverseeingtheentireathleticdepartmentandpromotingArmstrongAtlanticStateathleticsinthecommunityofSavannah. Dr.Aenchbacherreceivedhisbachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducationfromArm-strongAtlanticStatein1979,wherehewasastandoutstudent-athleteforthebaseballteamasapitcher.HereceivedhisMaster’sdegreeandDoctorateofEducationfromtheUniversityofGeorgia. Alongwithhisstudent-athleteexperienceatAASU,Dr.AenchbacheralsocoachedthePiratecrosscountryteamsforfiveyearsandstartedthefirstAASUmen’ssoccerteam,whichhecoachedforsevenyears. DuringDr.Aenchbacher’stenureasathleticdirector,AASU’sathleticprogramshavehadtremendoussuccessintheclassroomandontheplayingfield.Student-athletesatAASUhaveexcelledinacademicswith56percentearninga3.0gradepointaverageorbetter.TheoverallgradepointaverageofAASUstudent-athletesis2.97,higherthantheoverallinstitutionalGPA.In2007-08,theAASUathleticdepartmentenjoyedunprecedentedathleticandacademicachievementasthemen’sandwomen’stennisteamseachcapturedtheNCAADivisionIINationalChampionships,whilethreeAASUstudent-ath-letesearnedESPN:TheMagazine/CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americahonors.ItisthefirsttimeinprogramhistorythatthePirateshaveearnedmultiplenationalchampionshipsinoneseasonaswellashavingmultipleAcademicAll-Americans. ThomasZ.Jones,thesixthpresidenttoserveatArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity,beginshisninthyearatAASU.HiredonAugust1,2000,JoneswasselectedbytheBoardofRegentsandUniversitySystemofGeorgiaChancellorStephenR.Portchafteranex-haustivenationalsearch. Dr.JonesservedonthefacultyandadministrationatColumbusStateUniversity,asitsvicepresidentforacademicaffairsfrom1988-2000,priortocomingtoArmstrongAtlanticState.A30-yearveteranofuniversityteachingandadministration,Dr.JoneshastaughtatIndianaStateUniversity,EmoryandHenryCollegeandtheWestVirginiaInsti-tuteofTechnology.WhileatWestVirginiaTech,Dr.JonesservedastheWestmorelandProfessorofMining,anendowedprofessorship,andvicepresidentofacademicaffairs. Dr.Jonesreceivedhisbachelor’sdegreeinphysicsfromFairmontStateCollege,hismasterofartsdegreeingeologyfromWestVirginiaUniversityandhisPh.DinGeologyfromMiami(Ohio)University. TedEvansbeginshisfifthseasonastheheadsoftballcoachforthePirates.EvanshasdirectedthePiratestothreeconsecutiveNCAAappearances,includingthe2007SouthAtlanticRegionfinal.TheAndrewsCollegegraduatehasnearly30yearsofcoachingexperi-enceandjoinedthePiratesfromChattanoogaStateCC,whereheservedasthehittinganddefensiveinstructorfortheLadyTigers.Evansalsoplayedandcoachedmen’sfastpitchsoftballfor19years.

LynnRobertsbeginsherninthyearastheSeniorWomen’sAdministratorfortheAASUathleticdepartment.Aformerwomen’stenniscoachfrom1988-1991forthePirates,shecurrentlyservesasanassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofHealthandPhysicalEducationandalsoservesasthechairofAASU’sStudentAth-leteAdvisoryCommittee.SheismarriedtocurrentAASUbaseballcoachJoeRobertsandtogetherthecouplehavetwosons,BrianandEric.

SimonEarnshawHead TennisCoach

SimonEarnshawbeginshistenthseasonastheheadcoachofthehighlysuccessfulmen’sandwomen’stennisprogramsandhascompileda235-28overallrecordwiththewomenanda173-70recordwiththemen,leadingbothsquadstotheNCAADIINationalChampi-onshipsin2008.AgraduateofGeorgiaCollege&State,Earnshawandhiswife,Nicki,havetwodaughters-AbigailandElla-andason,Luke.

DianneLaneAthleticSecretary

AnativeSavannahian,DianneLanehasbeenatAASUforthepasttwentyyears.LaneattendedtheUniversityofGeorgiaandhasbeenmarriedtoKenLanefor43years.Shehasthreechildrenandsixgrandchildren,includingtwosetsoftwins-TylerandEvan(12),andParkerandDylan(9)-Bridgette(8)andCarson(4).

JoeRobertsHead BaseballCoach

JoeRobertsbeginshis30thseasonasheadbaseballcoach.Compilinganoverallrecordof1,150-547(.678)in29seasons,Robertsranksasoneoftheall-timewinningestcollegiatebaseballcoachesinNCAAhistory.AgraduateofSt.AndrewsCollege,RobertshasledthePiratestoNCAADivisionIIregionalplay12times,threetripstotheDIICollegeWorldSeriesand29consecutivewinningseasons.

EricFaulconerHead Women’s Soccer Coach

EricFaulconerbeginshisfourthseasonasheadcoachoftheAASUwomen’ssoccerteamafterleadingthePiratestoasecondconsecutiveNCAAberthandthePBCTournamentChampionshipgamein2007.Hehascompiledacareercoachingrecordof111-61-8,in-cludingsixseasonsatThomasUniversity.FaulconergraduatedfromFloridaStatein1992andheandhiswife,Ginger,haveoneson,Zachary.

MichaelButlerentershisninthyearasheadcoachoftheAASUmen’sgolfteamandisinhisfourthastheheadcoachofthefledglingwomen’ssquad.Butlerhasledthemen’steamtotheNCAAseachofthelastsixseasonsanddirectedthePiratestoarunner-upfinishatthe2005DIIMen’sGolfChampionships,heldinSavannah.ASavannahnative,ButlerismarriedtotheformerWhitneyGregofMonroe,Ga.

MattSchmidtHead Women’s Basketball Coach

MattSchmidtbeginshisfirstseasonastheheadwomen’sbas-ketballcoachatAASU.SchmidtjoinsthePiratesafterspend-ingthelastfourseasonsastheassistantcoachatNorthernKentucky,the2007-08NCAADivisionIINationalChampions.Schmidtearnedhisbachelor’sdegreeinhealthandphysicaleducationfromWestLibertyStatein1996andearnedhismaster’sdegreeinphysicaleducationfromWestVirginiain2000.

JeffBurkhamerbeginshisseventhseasonasheadcoachoftheAASUmen’sbasketballsquadandhascompileda110-67recordinhissixseasons,includingthreeNCAAappearancesand20-winseasons.BurkhamerjoinedthePiratesfromMarshallUniversity,whereheservedasassociateheadcoachforthreeseasons,andisaformerjuniorcollegeCoachoftheYearwhileatSantaFeCCinFlorida.

Dr. Spencer WheelerTeam Physician Dr.SpencerWheeleristhemedicaldirectorandteamphysicianforArmstrongAtlantic’sathleticteams.Dr.WheelercompletedhismedicalschooltrainingattheMedicalCollegeofGeorgiain1985,andhisorthopaedictrainingattheUniversityofFlorida.Wheelerservedtwosportsmedicinefellowships;oneatJohnsHopkinsInstituteandoneinSydney,Australia.Dr.WheelerservedastheheadofathleticcareinAtlantaforthe1996SummerOlympics.

Daniel Hinely, MED, LAT, ATCHead Athletic Trainer DanielHinelyentershisthirdseasonasheadathletictrainerforthePirates.AgraduateofValdostaStateUniversityin2003withabachelor’sdegreeinsportsmedicine,HinelybecamefamiliarwiththePeachBeltConferencebycompletinghismaster’sdegreeinphysicaleducationfromGCSUin2005. HinelyjoinsAASUfromBelmontAbbeyCollege,whereheservedasanassistanttrainerin2005-06.WhileatBAC,Hinelyprovidedgamedaycoverageforwomen’ssoccer,men’sbasketball,men’stennisandlacrossewhilehelpingprovidedailytrainingneedstomorethan260student-athletesfortheCrusaders.HinelyiscertifiedwiththeATCandisamemberofboththeNationalAthleticTrainers’Association(NATA)andtheGeorgiaAthleticTrainers’Association(GATA).

Will CondonHead Volleyball Coach HeadvolleyballcoachWillCondonbeginshisfirstseasonatthehelmoftheArm-strongAtlanticStateprogram.Condonistheeighthheadcoachinthe23-yearhistoryoftheprogram,whichbeganin1986. CondonjoinedthePiratesfromfellowPeachBeltConferenceschoolUSCAiken,whereheservedasthePacers’headvolleyballcoachforthepasteightseasons,compil-inga161-100recordasthewinningestcoachinthatschool’shistory. ThePeachBeltConference’sCoachoftheYearin2006,thePacersunderCondoncollectedback-to-backPeachBeltregularseasonandtournamenttitlesin2006and2007.ThetitleswerethefirstforthePacerprogramsince1995. USCAikenalsomadeitsfirst-everappearancesintheNCAAChampionshipsinbothseasons,advancingtotheNCAASouthRegional. CondonbecameUSCAiken’sninthheadcoachin2000andimmediatelyenjoyedsuccessashetookasquadthathadfinished11-18inthepreviousseasonanddirectedthemtoa24-10overallrecordanda9-5conferencemark,finishingthirdinthePBC. In2001,USCAikenwasagainintheupperhalfoftheconferencestandingswitha19-12overallrecord(7-7PBC),placingtheteamfourth. Aftera13-21markin2003,theLadyPacerspostedoneofthebiggestturnaroundsinconferencehistorywitha21-13recordin2004.Finishing8-6inthePBC,USCAikenwasonegamebackofthirdplace. The2004seasonsawCondonandthePacersputupanother20-winseasonwitha21-13recordandan8-6markintheleague,settingthestageforafour-yearruninwhichUSCAikenwouldwin35of48conferencematches,culminatingintheundefeated10-0markthePacerscompiledin2007,thefirstundefeatedleaguemarkinthePBC-andonlythethirdleagueschoolevertocompileanunbeatenvolleyballleaguerecord. WhileatUSCAiken,CondoncoachedoneESPN:TheMagazine/CoSIDAAll-AmericanandPBCPlayeroftheYear(MandyGerolstein),onePBCFreshmanoftheYear(AmyLong),13All-PBCperformersand20PBCPlayeroftheWeekhonorees. FourtimesCondondirectedthePacersto20-winseasonswhileatUSCAikenandheleavestheschoolhavingwon40ofhislast50matchesoverthelasttwoseasons. IthasbeennearlyadecadesincethePirateshavebeeninthepositiontheyfindthemselvesinheadingintothe2008campaign.Acoachingchange,ateamcomingoffofalosingseasonandasquadwithmorenewcomersthanstarters-itharkensbacktothe1999campaignthatsawArmstrongAtlanticStatevolleyballusherinanewera.Thatsquadwonitsfirst29matchesenroutetoaschool-recordbest36-5markandarisetoprominence,notonlyinthePeachBeltConferencebutregionallyandnationallyaswell. NewheadcoachWillCondonknowswhatittakestobringthePiratesbacktothatlevelafterleadingUSCAikentoback-to-backPBCChampionshipsandNCAARegion-alsappearances.HehastwoAll-Conferenceperformersreturningin2008,aswellastheschool’ssingle-seasonrecordholderindigs,whilealsobringinginasolidclassofnew-comersthatupgradethetalentateverypositiononthecourt. BothofthePirates’returningAll-PBCperformersfindthemselvesatnewpositionsfortheupcomingseason,butareeminentlycapableofkeepinguptheperformancelevel.Afteranabortedseniorseasonthatlastedjustsevenmatches,RindyVidovichreturnsforherfifthseasonasaPirateandisthelonesenioronthesquadthisseason.The2006All-PBCplayerhasplayedontherightsideandtheoutsideduringhercareerandwillseeactioninthemiddlethisyearforthePirates.
