After a very success-ful first season, BethHonaker starts her sec-ond season as headcoach of the LadyHardrockers.Beth, originally from

Walkerton, Ind., servedas the School of Minesassistant volleyballcoach for one seasonin 2006.Previously she was

head coach at GwinnHigh School (Mich.)for four years. She hasa Masters of Exercise

Science degree from Northern Michigan University whereshe played for the NCAA Div. II Wildcats as an outside andright side hitter. As a coach, Honaker said the main thing she wants to

instill into her players is the team concept.“I think the biggest thing will be trying to teach the girls

that volleyball is not just a hobby, it’s almost like a job. There

are going to be times that they might not want to go to prac-tice or might not want to travel that weekend, but being partof a team is being a part of something that’s a whole lot big-ger than themselves,” Honaker said. “For the most part, it’sgetting everybody on the same page. If we figure out how todo everything we need to do as a team then we are going tobe a heck of a lot better.”Honaker added that she wants to take the winning season

the Hardrockers had in 2007, use it as a stepping stone foreven better things to come.“I think the girls got a taste of what it’s like to be a winning

team. In the past few years they knew they weren’t lookedupon as a big threat from other teams in the conference. That’s going to change --- actually I think it already has,”Honaker said.“Looking over the past 15 plus years, there has been a tra-

dition at the School of Mines for volleyball. (TheHardrockers) were the top of the conference and they werecompeting with (the likes of) Dickinson State and theUniversity of Mary. My big thing is to somehow tap back intothat tradition and bring it back. I think we have the caliber ofplayers now and we are getting the caliber of players so thatwe could be back up there.”

Luciana Camargo is in her second season as the assistantcoach of the Lady Hardrocker volleyball team.

Camargo is a familiar name to volleyball fans in RapidCity, spending the last five years just down the road atNational AmericanUniversity --- as a player and an assistantcoach.

Camargo graduated from NAU in the spring of 2007 withan Applied Management degree.

As an outside hitter for the Mavericks, Camargo was astarter for the team from 2002-05. She was also apart of theprogram in 2006 as an assistant coach.

“I think our girls already respect Luciana as a former ath-lete and in return will grow to respect her even more as acoach,” Honaker said. “Luciana brings a lot of playing expe-rience to the team. She understands different situations andscenarios from an athlete’s perspective.”

Camargo grew up in San Paulo, Brazil, finishing highschool in 2000. It was there that she learned her volleyballskills. But it wasn’t until she came to Rapid City that she wasable to play the sport in an organized fashion.

During her college playing career, Camargo was namedan NAIA All American four consecutive years as well asearned All Region honors all four years she was competing(Region III).

And 2006 offered Camargo a chance to experience volley-

ball from a whole newprospective, helpingcoach at NAU andbringing the Mavericksanother nationalchampionship.

“I helped a lot withplayer workouts andrecruiting,” Camargosaid. “I was able tobring in three playersthat are on the teamnow --- good players. Ialso did other dutiesthat an assistant has toattend to.”

Now a part of theHardrocker program, Camargo hopes to project her love andtalent for the game onto a new generation of volleyball play-ers.

“I really like the game,” Camargo said. “I can’t play any-more, but (coaching) is something I am excited to do. I get achance to assist coach (Honaker) and hopefully I get achance to pass some of my experience on to the (SDSMT)players. I am excited to be here.”

RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mineswomen’s volleyball team turned quite a few heads last season. After finishing with 20-plus wins and falling just one gameshort of a berth to the NAIA National Tournament, the LadyHardrockers surprised a number of teams in the conferencedue mainly to a solid and unified group of volleyball players.Bad news for the rest of the conference – the core of last

year’s squad return to the 2008 version – a little older, a littlewiser and a little more hungry. The Lady Hardrockers have six

seniors on the squad to complimenta younger talented contingent thatwhen combined will make anotherformidable team as the 2008 seasongets underway.“I think that the potential of this

team is far better than last year. (In2007) we peaked very early andplayed the same volleyball through-out the entire year,” said LadyHardrocker second-year head coachBeth Honaker. “I think this year, wecould potentially struggle at timesthroughout the season, but weshould peak at the end of the yearwhen it’s most important.”The rest of the volleyball world is

already taking somewhat of a notice of South Dakota Schoolof Mines. When the preseason Top 25 national rankings werereleased, the Hardrockers received votes.“It’s an honor. I was pleased to see it because now our

name is out there,” Honaker said. “We are well known forwomen’s basketball – that’s a given, but volleyball fell off themap a while ago and now it seems like it’s starting to comeback. I like the idea that our name is in the back of (coaches)minds when they do take votes.”More localized, the Dakota Athletic Conference preseason

poll has also been released where the Lady ‘Rockers were list-ed third, behind Dickinson State and Black Hills State respec-tively.“I like the idea that we are not sitting one or two. We are

right where we fell last year at the end of the season,” Honakersaid. “I believe the poles are accurate.”SD Mines finished 2007 with a 9-5 conference mark and

posted an overall record of 23-6. The Hardrockers fell toDickinson three times last year, Black Hills State twice andlost a close match to Jamestown to account for their losses. The Hardrockers did however break a 12-match losing streakto their biggest rivals (BHSU) when SDM upended the YellowJackets in the DAC semifinal match at the end of the season.Honaker said that Dickinson and Black Hills will be strong

again this year, but added that things appear to be a littlemore even among the top three squads. The coach added thatJamestown College will also cause some havoc this seasonand shouldn’t be overlooked.“They could be the underdogs that everyone is going to

look past this year,” she said. The Hardrockers lost three seniors from the 2007 squad:

Jennie Malone, Jenifer Markoff and Quana Higgins. Malonewas a standout for four seasons and Honaker saidshe will be missed as will Markoff and Higgins withtheir leadership skills. Higgins will remain with thesquad this season as a team manager. The Hardrockers have a few aces in the hole, but

none bigger than 2007 DAC Libero of theYear JennyHiykel. The 5-foot-1-inch player from Omaha,Neb., brings a lot of talent to the team. She is wellestablished at the position, earning numerous DACLibero of theWeek honors in 2007, along with sev-eral Region III accolades and a NAIA NationalLibero of the Week award. Last year she racked up753 digs, was 366-408 on the serve and had 29 aces. She is also a pro at serve receive and is starting topass the ball better as well. She is one of the co-cap-tains of this year’s squad.“She’s basically picking up right where she left off

last season,” Honaker said. “Her serve receive isvery good right now. She also runs the court on

defense very well.”Offensively, the Hardrockers have a gem in senior Ashley

Kauffman, a 5-11 outside hitter from Fort Morgan, Colo.Kauffman was new to the team last season, coming in as ajunior transfer. She thrived in SDM’s system, collecting 331kills and going 878-1051on the attack. She was344-389 on serve with 36aces , came up with 385digs and tallied 58 totalblocks.Kauffman was able to

hone her skills in the off-season and according toHonaker has really ele-vated her play.Kauffman is the othercaptain of theHardrocker team.

“She earned thatposition this year afteronly being with thissquad for one season,”Honaker said. “Last year

she struggled a little with pressure and coming into new envi-ronment and new situation. This season is different. She isalready comfortable, already knows what to expect and thegirls already trust her.”Along with the senior leadership, the Hardrockers will get a

chance to see some raw untested talent with the addition offreshman Madi Lane. Lane is a 6-0 outside hitter from FortCollins, Colo. She has impressive ball striking power andshould adjust quickly to the SD Mines system.“She really didn’t have to adjust. The system was made for

athletes like Madi,” Honaker said. “She is in a position whereshe gets what we consider the not-so-perfect sets. Her job isto terminate and she does that very well.”The Hardrockers also have a couple of brand new setters in

freshmen Becky Keilholtz (5-2 from Gwinn, Mich.) andReanna Roberson (5-4 from Fort Collins, Colo.). SDM is plan-ning to run a 6-2 offense this season. There might be a fewgrowing pains with the young athletes, but Honaker feels thatwith a little game experience the two should gel in no time.“Right now our expectations are still high although differ-

ent from last year. Coming into this season, the idea was torun a faster offense,” Honaker said. “But with the two newyoung setters we have on the team right now --- we still wantto run a good offense --- we are going to have to slow thingsdown for a little while and keep it more simplistic until theyget more comfortable.”And with upperclassmen like seniors: Stephanie Carpio (5-

11 outside hitter fromYuma, Colo.); Amanda Cammack (5-11middle hitter from Sturgis, S.D.); Renae Keppen (a 5-10 mid-

dle hitter from Dakota Dunes, S.D.);Alena Ori (a 5-11 outside hitter fromKalispell, Mont.) junior: KatherineHanson (a 6-1 outside hitter fromSioux Falls, S.D.) and sophomores:Paige Corcoran (a 5-10 outside hit-ter from Pierre, S.D.) and DanielleWalraven (a 5-3 defensive specialistfrom Huron, S.D.) the team is over-loaded with experience and playingtime, making the ‘Rocker benchfairly deep.

“We do have a lot of depth. Withthe systemwe run right now, the 6-2offense, there are nine people in therotation. That only leaves five on thebench,” Honaker said. “Any one ofthose five are more than capable ofcoming in and filling a role.”The talent and the experience of

the team is a big plus for theHardrockers, but Honaker said thereal strength of the team right now isat the net, blocking balls. Last sea-son the girls finished with a modest420 blocks for the season. They arehoping to improve on that this year.

“Right now our blocking is reallyreally good. I have preached blocking for the past two years. We struggled with it a lot. Our front row players were having ahard time reading the setters on the other side and putting upa decent block,” Honaker said. “This year, I have kind of goneaway from (preaching) so we could concentrate on ouroffense, but (the blocking) has actually gotten better.”With such a senior laden team, the sky is usually the limit.

And that is just what the Hardrockers are shooting for.“The seniors have set a goal when they came in here as

freshmen. A lot of them have played and started for the pastthree seasons together and are continuing to play and startright now,” Honaker said. “Their goal before they leave theSchool of Mines is to make it to the (NAIA) NationalTournament. That is still their goal right now. That’s prettymuch all they ever talk about.”That may seem like a lofty goal to some, but Honaker said

the entire team is focused on that goal – doing whatever ittakes, no matter what the cost.“I have never coached a group of girls that are so unified,”

Honaker said. “They all want the same thing and they arewilling to sacrifice playing time or their position to make surethe best six are on the court at the same time.”
