Message from the Principal

Dear George Julian Families,

It is my hope that your summer was engaging and refreshing. Summer is a wonderful opportunity for students and families to spend quality time engaging with each other and their community. James Cash Penney once said, “Growth is never by mere chance, it is the result of forces working together.” Our team has worked all summer to ensure that we are prepared to provide a positive, engaging learning environment for your children. In this environment, the goal is that students will grow both academically and socially. We know that our families share these goals. One of our missions this year is to ensure that we provide every opportunity for parents to partner with us to help meet these goals.

As the Principal, I am overjoyed to welcome you to George W. Julian 57. This will be my second year at George Julian, however it is my 8th year as an administrator and my 19th year as an educator. It has been an honor to help shape the lives of students over the past almost two decades and I don’t take the responsibility lightly. Thank you for trusting us with those that are dearest to you. Know that they are dear to us, as well.

At the end of last year, we said goodbye to a few staff members that have been important to our school community. I am happy to report that we have added some new members to our team.I am looking forward to you all getting an opportunity to meet the new members of the George Julian family.

SCHOOL OVERVIEWOur school is located in Historic Irvington, Indiana. Irvington was founded in 1870 by Sylvester Johnson and Jacob Julian. Irvington was originally created as a suburban town of Indianapolis. Named after a prominent Indiana legislator, George Washington Julian, School 57 has maintained a strong educational heritage for over 100 years. George Washington Julian was one of Indiana's most prominent politicians of the 19th century, and in 1873 he moved to Irvington where he practiced law.

We are a public school. George Julian Elementary is tuition-free and open to any student who wishes to attend. Parents/guardians who want their child to attend George Julian Elementary School 57 must submit an Enrollment Form and other documents. Students should be dropped off at the back door closest to the cafeteria. Parents wishing to go in the building should park in the front and enter through the main entrance. Please avoid parking in the drop off lane. Please do not drop students off before 9am.

NEW CELL PHONE POLICYDear George Julian Families,

It is my suggestion as the principal of George W. Julian 57 that students do not bring cell phones to school. All the technology that they need to engage in learning activities will be provided for them. If you determine that your child needs a phone for safety reasons the following rules apply:

All phones brought to school need to be secured in lockers or backpacks throughout the day.

We will not be responsible for any phones that are lost or stolen.

If a student is found with a phone on their person during the day, they will be sent to the office where the phone will be secured until the end of the day.

1st Offense: Phone may be picked up at the end of the day by the student.

2nd Offense: Phone must be picked up by a parent.

3rd Offense: Phone must be picked up by a parent and student may not bring the phone back to school.

Continued violations after this offense will result in disciplinary action.

Attendance Policy

Research shows that students who attend school regularly and on time perform better and have more academic growth than students who are chronically absent. The Indianapolis Public School Board and all of its schools take attendance very seriously; therefore, our school is adopting a stronger attendance policy for this year with stronger consequences.

Excused Absences: Documented personal illness (authorized by Indiana Law; note from doctor or dentist) Death or loss in the immediate family (grandparents, parents, siblings) Subpoenaed as a witness at court (documented) Personal tragedy (administratively approved) Medical (note from Health Care provider) Juvenile or Criminal Justice System detention (documentation required)

Unexcused Absences: Truancy (absent without parent or school official’s knowledge or permission) Absent without permission for appointments Vacation or trips during school days Early dismissal and pick-up

Unexcused Absences Policy 1. A student is allowed one unexcused absence from school without consequence. 2. On the second unexcused absence from school, the teacher will call the parent. 3. On the third unexcused absence from school, the teacher will call the parent to set up a meeting to discuss attendance. 4. After the third unexcused absence, the student will be referred to the social worker for counseling.5. After 5 unexcused absences, the school Principal or school Social Worker/school Counselor serves legal notice on the parent. Paperwork is prepared for truancy or failure to ensure a child’s education. Legal notice is mandatory for failure to ensure; it is optional for truancy. NOTE: The social worker and parent involvement educator will be meeting and working with students and parents who are absent more than 3 times a semester, including those with excused absences

Tardi ness Guidelines Students are officially late at 9:25. After the second tardy the student’s parent may be contacted by the social worker and/or administrator.

George Julian 57 School-wide Behavior Plan

We will be following the Student Code of Conduct. This can be found on the IPS website or will be provided upon request. (Under the Students and Families tab)

In addition, we will be implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). There will be school-wide expectations to ensure consistency and order within the building. (See Below)

Positive reinforcements will be utilized to acknowledge appropriate behavior.

George Julian Jets will be awarded to classes that are displaying the expectations in common areas.

George Julian Boarding Passes will be awarded to students who are displaying academic excellence. At the end of the week one student’s pass will be drawn from each class to determine the passenger of the week. This student’s name will be called on Monday and they will receive a certificate and a small prize.

George Julian Frequent Flyer Miles Students will be awarded DoJo points. Teachers will complete Frequent Flyer Miles for students prior to attending Jets store.

If there are concerns about students having needs beyond the School-wide Behavior Plan the following interventions may be implemented:

VOLUNTEERS

Citizens who voluntarily contribute their time and talents to the improvement and enrichment of the Indianapolis Public Schools and its students make a significant contribution to student success. The Indianapolis Public Schools encourages the constructive participation of groups and individuals in our schools to perform appropriate tasks during and after school hours under the direction and supervision of professional personnel. Whenever possible, community volunteers should be recruited from the neighborhood served by the school and the families of the children within the school itself. In every case, volunteers must be approved by the school administrator, and shall work within the guidelines established by the school administrator and under the direct supervision of teachers or other members of the school staff designated by the school administrator. Every volunteer must complete a volunteer form and be approved prior to working with students.

It is the policy of the Indianapolis Public Schools to require volunteers who will sustain direct contact with students or serve as representatives of the schools be fingerprinted for a background check. Such positions include volunteer coaches, unpaid club sponsors, unsupervised overnight chaperones, volunteers who are responsible for large sums of moneys collected on behalf of the organizations and schools, student teachers, and unpaid interns with student contact assignments. At the discretion of the Superintendent, other volunteers may be fingerprinted upon receipt of a written request from a building principal stating the reason for conducting a background check. Indianapolis Public Schools is responsible for the direct costs associated with obtaining the criminal history information required under this policy.

IPS UNIFORM POLICY

ALL STUDENTS IN GRADES K-8 ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A UNIFORM

ALL STUDENTS IN GRADE 3-8 ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A BELT

Student Tops:

Must be a solid color with a collar. No t-shirts or shirts with logos.

Student Bottoms:

Must be khaki, navy blue, or black. Skirts, shorts, jumpers, and dresses must be at least knee length. No short skirts, denim/blue jeans

Sweaters and Sweatshirts:

Must be worn over an approved blouse or shirt. Must be a solid color. No hooded sweatshirts or sweaters are to be worn in school during the school day unless they bear the official school logo.

Shoes:

Closed toe and closed heel only. No open toe, flip flops, or slippers will be allowed. Socks and tights can be any color.

Physical Education Attire:

Gym or soft-soled shoes should be worn to gym. Students wearing skirts or dresses should wear shorts underneath. Necklaces and earrings should not be worn to gym.

If your student wears glasses, please provide a strap for them to prevent them from falling off and getting broken.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Students are not permitted to bring toys, electronics, or personal items to school. Cell phones are not permitted in class. If a student has his/her phone on and/or visible, it will be collected by the teacher and sent to the office. Parents may pick up student phones from the office.

REPORT CARDS, INTERIM GRADES, GRADING SCALEReport cards are given out at the end of each quarter. Midterms will come home at the halfway point in each quarter.

Mensaje de la Directora Julio de 2018 Estimadas familias George Julián, Espero que su verano fue placentero y refrescante. El verano es una oportunidad maravillosa para estudiantes y familias a pasar tiempo de calidad unos con otros y con su comunidad.James Cash Penney dijo una vez, "crecimiento nunca es mera casualidad, es el resultado de fuerzas trabajando juntos". Nuestro equipo ha trabajado durante todo el verano para asegurar que estamos preparados para proporcionar un ambiente de aprendizaje positivo, y atractivo para los niños. NUEVA POLÍTICA DE TELÉFONO CELULAR

Estimados familias George Julian, Es mi sugerencia como directora de George W. Julian 57 que los alumnos no traigan celulares a la escuela. Se proporcionará toda la tecnología que necesitan para participar en las actividades de aprendizaje para ellos. Si usted determina que su niño necesita un teléfono por razones de seguridad se aplican las siguientes reglas:

Póliza de asistencia

Investigación muestra que los estudiantes que asisten a la escuela regularmente y a tiempo mejor y tienen un crecimiento más académico que los estudiantes que están crónicamente ausentes. La Junta de escuelas públicas de Indianapolis y todas sus escuelas toman asistencia muy en serio; por lo tanto, nuestra escuela está adoptando una política de atención más fuerte para este año con fuertes consecuencias. VOLUNTARIOS

Los ciudadanos que voluntariamente aportan su tiempo y talento a la mejora y enriquecimiento de las escuelas públicas de Indianápolis y sus estudiantes hacen una contribución significativa al éxito de los estudiantes. Las escuelas públicas de Indianápolis anima a la participación constructiva de grupos e individuos en nuestras escuelas para realizar tareas adecuadas durante y después del horario escolar bajo la dirección y supervisión de personal profesional. Siempre que sea posible, voluntarios de la comunidad deben ser reclutados del barrio por la escuela y las familias de los niños en la escuela. Camisas/Blusas del estudiante:

Debe ser un color sólido con un collar. No se permite camisetas ni camisas con logos.

Pantalon/falda de estudiante:

Debe ser color caqui, azul marino o negro. Faldas, pantalones, jumpers y vestidos deben ser por lo menos longitud de la rodilla. No faldas cortas, pantalones vaqueros del dril de algodón/azul

Suéteres y sudaderas:

Deben ser usados sobre la blusa/camisa aprobados. Debe ser un color sólido. No sudaderas con capucha o suéteres pueden ser usados en la escuela durante el día escolar a menos que tengan el logo de la escuela oficial.

Zapatos:

Cerrado solamente. No se permitirá ninguna, sandalia o zapatillas. Calcetines y medias pueden ser cualquier color.

Traje de educación física:

Se debe usar zapatos de suela suave o de gimnasio. Los estudiantes que usan faldas o vestidos deben usar shorts debajo. No se deben usar collares y aretes al gimnasio.

Si su hijo lleva gafas, por favor proporcione una correa para ellos evitando que se les caigan y se les quiebren.

PROPIEDAD PERSONAL

Los estudiantes no pueden traer juguetes, electrónica y artículos personales a la escuela. No se permiten teléfonos celulares en clase. Si un estudiante tiene su teléfono visible, será recogido por el profesor y enviado a la oficina. Los padres pueden recoger los teléfonos del estudiante de la oficina.
