TODAY'! CAMI TAYPORT v WHITBURN

in the SUPER LEAGUE

Of all the teams to be facing when looking for your first home win of the season , the

last team you'd want would be Wbitburn whose record v Tayport, whilst if not exactly

unblemished , has yet to have recorded a defeat in four visits since their first, a Scottish

Cup win in 1995. Three previous Canniepairt encounters since Whitburn were pro

moted to the Super League, have seen Tayport draw 0-0 and lose two games by the odd

goal.

Whitburn were champions Lochee United's closest challengers last season , finishing in

runner-up spot and wiU be keen to go one better this season. Manager Derek Strick

land has added several players in the close season. Internationalist centre half Joe Mbu

was transferred to Cowdenbeath and has been replaced by David McGurk from West

Calder United.

Midfield players Andy Doig , who hit fifteen goals for Whitehill Welfare in the East of

Scotland League last season, and David Murphy, younger brother of John Murphy ,

who signed from Armadale Thistle, are the other recruits . Chris Dolan joined up from

Fauldhouse United and Kevin Donnelly from Bo'ness United. Donnelly won ' t feature

today , having been sent off in the 2-2 draw with Glenrothe s last week.

Wbitburn were shocked in the semi final of the south league cup, losing 4-0 to Newton

grange Star but in their section bad been scoring goals for fun, 23 from five wins in five

games. Most of the damage has been done by the striking trio of Andy Roberts (5),

Alex Luriosky (5) and the boss ' s son Colin Strickland (4).

Whilst Whitburn, by all accounts were fortunate to salvage a point from their opening

Super League game with Glens, Tayport ended up well beaten by Kelty . It all looked so

different, however, after a promising opening 45 minutes which had the substantial

Port support looking forward to the second half with an optimism which was ultimately

to have proved unfounded.

Robbie Holden is still suspended, Kevin Kelly and Ronnie Kenneth are still injured but

there could be a place between the sticks for new keeper, Sam Morris , who has joined

the club on a loan deal from Cowdenbeatb. Sam, of course , is a Tayport lad who for

merly played underage football with Tayport Thistle.

While pre-season results were not great, new gaffer lain Jenkins was hampered by players being unavailable or injured, but it was hoped that by the time the competitive games came around, 'Port would be getting into their stride.

The DJ Laing League Cup ties, however, brought poor results. Tayport started well enough, comfortably seeing off North End on the Canniepairt. Robbie Holden pounced to net the first official goal of the new regime, before Barry McNaughton crashed home a volley from the edge of the area, to double the lead. A third counter came in the closing stages, Kevin Kelly finding the net, after tenacious play from Holden. So, a satisfying evening, with the new faces beginning to settle in.

A familiar face also made a return to Tayport colours, several years after leaving for North End. Assistant boss, Sean Wilkie was pressed into action when Steve Fallon succumbed to injury and the former skipper was in the starting line up when Tayport played East Craigie two weeks ago. Holden again found the net and it looked like 'Port would record another win, albeit in less stylish fashion. The Shipbuilders snatched a last-gasp draw, though, with an opportunistic strike from the left side of the park.

Dropping a point wa? far from ideal, but not disastrous. Disaster did strike on Wednesday . Amidst torrential rain, all of those connected with the club were left reeling by a four-goal drubbing at the hands of Dundee Violet. The Pansies took the lead in an otherwise uneventful first half, then stunned their hosts by scoring three more after the break. Tayport did not produce nearly enough quality in the final third of the park and made basic errors at the back.

Then came another disappointment , when Broughty, since drawn out of the hat as our Scottish Junior Cup opponents , opened the scoring on the Canniepairt, before a lacklustre Tayport equalised through Darren Scott, on his return to the side.

So, on to the start of the East Super League campaign, when it was hoped that 'Port would click into gear . The first half at Kelty was encouraging, with a few chances created, just not taken. Goalless at half-time, there was no real indication that Jenkins' team would go down by three goals,;but, that they did. Tam McGeorge headed the opener, a few minutes short of the hour and, before Tayport could recover, Craig Morrison raced away to double Kelty's lead. The same player later rubbed further salt into the wound , with his second.

The 'Port support will be anxious to see an improvement this afternoon, but, given the club's record against Whitbum , Tayport could not have a sterner test.

JENKS'

THOUGHTS ....

It's my pleasure to welcome the players , officials and supporters of Whitbum FC to the Canniepairt .

It would be something of an understatem ent to say that the pre-season and league

cup campaign so far has contained more downs than ups. No one needs to be re

minded of the results in these games but injuries , holidays and other absences

have played a major part in the disturbance of the programme. 1 have, however ,

recently been extreme!y pleased with the players' application and attitude towards

trying to take Tayport back where they belong - challenging in all major competitions.

Myself and the coaching staff are always looking to improve the team and I think

with most of the recent crop of players, with additions already made, then a few more fresh faces , we will not be far away .

It takes a lot of time and hard work to build your team. The current crop of play

ers need to know the way I work and vice versa and I think it's working hand in hand at the moment.

Today's opponents Whitbum are one of the more established sides in the Super

League and will be a very tough test for us . I'm led to believe we have not had

great success against Whitbum so we will be going out with all guns blazing to get that monkey off our backs .

Can I thank the supporters for their continued support and will ask you all to do it again so hopefully we can keep the three points at the Canniepairt.

AU. CHANG£ IN THE. CLOSE. SE.A.SON

The end of last season brought to an end the 16 month tenure of managers Frank Conway and Ian Gilzean. Frank and Ian's spell in charge at the Canniepairt ended on a high, however, with three successive victories over East of Scotland Cup winners Camelon in a league game and two cup wins over Blairgowrie and Forfar West End to lift the Currie Cup for a record tenth time.

The club brought in lain Jenkins and his assistant, former 'Port captain Sean Wilkie, both previously at North End, to take over the reins. The new manager wasted no time in making changes. Out went Ross Gunnion, Andy Lawson and Steve McAllister. Ross and Steve to Kinnoull and Andy to fellow Super League team Hill of Beath. A fourth departure was big defender Brian Livie who had decided to devote more time to his Police career. We wish these lads well and thank them for their significant contribution to the club's success in recent years.

Arriving at the Canniepairt were experienced defender Steve Fallon from North End, midfielder Adam O'Connor also from the Dokens and back for a second spell at Tayport, striker Robbie Holden from Kinnoull . Young midfield player Stefan Elvin arrived from Dundee FC and two youngsters arrived on loan. Midfielder Scott McCrindle from Cowdenbeath until the end of the year and full back Joe Pepper from Arbroath until the end of the season. Earlier this week, local lad , keeper Sam Morris, was fixed up on a loan deal from Cowdenbeath. Sam's featured in the Blue Brazil's 1st team squad since the start of the season.

Pre-season preparations were hindered by holiday commitments of players and management as well as injury problems. Ronnie Kenneth underwent a cartilage operation while Frazer FitzPatrick had optical laser treatment. Although we performed quite well at home to a strong East Fife side, the other performances v Arthurlie, Cowdenbeath and the two tour games in England were struggles.

Confidence was boosted with a friendly win in Perth v Kinnoull and the season started well enough with a 3-0 win at home to North End. It was to prove a false dawn, however, with the line-up chopping and changing as holidays and a series of niggling injuries took their toll. A draw at East Craigie, a humping by Violet, a home draw with Broughty and a defeat at Kelty brings us to this afternoon's meeting with Whitbum and hopefully a change of fortune.

THIS WEEK'S SUPER SIX LOTTERY PRIZE IS £1,000

STEVEN FALLON

When lain Jenkins was appointed to the Tayport managerial post his first signing was 29 year old defender Steven Fallon from Dundee North End.

Steven was born in Paisley and from the age of 12 his football ability was developed through being involved with Dundee United's coaching organisation in the Glasgow area under Graeme Liveston. It was inevitable, therefore, that Steven would join United which he did, going full time in 1997.

To get a regular game, however, Steven went on loan to Stenhousemuir in 2000 before he moved to Gayfield for a season.

From Arbroath it was back to the west and two seasons at Hampden with Queens Park. From Queens it was back to Stenhousemuir for a couple of season before going Junior with North End.

Although not making the first team at Tannadice, Steven played 92 league games for Arbroath, Queen's Park and Stenny.

Steven's wife is from Dundee and that's where they've set up home. Steven was injured on his debut for Tayport against old side North End in the opening day of the season but returned to put in a sterling shift last week at Kelty.

SNIFFING ABOUT WITH THE SNOUT

Formartine United, the North Region Junior Club, are set to become the sixteenth member of the Highland League. Formartine's application for membership will be heard in two weeks time when they hope to get the go ahead to kick-off season 2009/10 in the Seniors. It will be recalled when Tayport played at Formartine's North Lodge Park Pitmedden twice inside a month back in 2001, the ground looked far from suitable for Senior football. However, if the application is approved, Formartine's upgrading plans will kick in immediately to provide floodlighting, a stand and an enclosure. As Tayport are aware, through their enquiries regarding membership of the Highland League prior to the advent of the Super League, the ground criteria for membership is pretty strict.

Last week was a miserable weekend for Port boss lain Jenkins. On top of the defeat by Kelty, Jenks ended up in hospital on Saturday night and Sunday. Although he missed training on Monday, Jenks was back at the Canniepairt on Wednesday for training.

Former Tayport players Allan Ramsay and Gus Malone have teamed up againthis time at St Andrews United. Saints boss Jim Hardie brought in Gus as player coach and Allan's transfer from North End followed soon after. Bonnyrigg Rose midfielder Paul Riley has walked away from New Dundas Park having not seen eye to eye with the new management and is available for a move.

It's congratulations · to committee members Sandy and Jim McDade following their team success in Cobbies Inn golf outing on Sunday past. We are assured they did not tour the Scott & Fyfe factory in an open-top fork lift truck!

Two youngsters with Tayport FC connections have been fixed up at Senior clubs. Jack Dempster, erstwhile ball boy at the Canniepairt, has joined the Cowdenheath FC youth set-up while committee man John Anderson's wee lad Fraser, a familiar face here on match days, has moved from Tayport Thistle to Dundee United ' s SPL youth set-up. We wish them well.

Arniston Rangers, whose ground at Gorebridge is the latest Junior ground to be sold off for housing development (and that might take a while given the current economic climate), are currently groundsbaring with Musselburgh Athletic at Olive Bank.

Dundee Violet's Glenesk Park is set to stage a pop concert next summer, similar to that staged last year by Downfield at Downfield Park. The availability of the local council's new mobile stage facility has been a great boon for such events.

The draw for the Fife & Lothians Cup has been drawn but Tayport has again been omitted as we are not a Fife club. Work that one out, if you can!

A DAY IN ...... ... SEPTEMBER 2000 Taysi de Premier League

Lochee United O - 2 Tayport ./

Andy Sommerville was the Tayport manager for the club's first visit to Thomson Park in the new century, a comfortable 2 - 0 win over Lochee United before a crowd of 178.

Referee was Steve Pullar.

Larry Duncan was the manager of the Lochee United side which was Mark Murray; Grant Milne, Jimmy Anderson , Mike Feeney, John Mitchell , Kenny Laing, Jimmy Brown, Marcus Dailly, David Hutton, Mark Kelly and Ally Paterson.

Subs were Kirk Dailly, Ross Dorward, Steve Scott, ·Josh Jenkins and Kenny Boyle.

Tayport had Frazer FitzPatrick in goal, playing the sixth of what is so far 315 games for the club following his move from Montrose FC.

Grant Buist, Kenny Jones, Sean Wilkie and Ian Greig were the back four.

In midfield were Brian Craik, Allan Ramsay and Bomber Harris.

An attacking line-up was completed by Ronnie Kenneth, Graeme Nicol and Davie Evans.

What about the Tayport bench? Substitutes were the massively talented trio of Dave Reilly, Mark Corcoran and John Ward, arguably three of the best players to have pulled on a Tayport je rsey in the past twenty years . They came on to replace Birdie, Evans and Nicoll .

Ian Greig and Ronnie Kenneth were the Port marksmen .
