58 Elvis Dumervil2005 Bronko Nagurski Award Winner

When one thinks of thefinest players in the

BIG EAST Conference,Elvis Dumervil’s name willnow be included on thatlist. Dumervil’s 2005 seasonwill go down as the finestever for a Cardinal.A native of Miami, Fla.,Dumervil played sparinglyas a freshman in 2002 before playing in all 13 games as a sophomore in 2003. He recorded 28 tackles

and two sacks, but seemed to always make plays when inserted into the lineup. The 2004 season was his best to that pointin his career, recording 52 tackles and leading the team with 10 sacks. However, no one could’ve forecasted the successDumervil would achieve in 2005. Dumervil set an NCAA record in the first game that season, recording six sacks in a 31-24 win over Kentucky. He followed that performance with three more sacks against Oregon State to set another record forsacks in consecutive games with nine. He went on to terrorize the opposition for 20 sacks and 10 forced fumbles, both ofwhich led the nation and were school and league records. He guided the Cardinals to a 9-3 record and was named the BIGEAST Defensive Player of the Year. At the end of his senior season, Dumervil was tabbed the winner of the BronkoNagurski Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. Dumervil was drafted in the fourth round by the DenverBroncos.

Cardinals from 1983-86, Bruce Armstrongbecame one of the most dominating andintimidating offensive lineman in the historyof the school.

Beginning his career at U of L as a tightend, Armstrong recorded 33 receptions in hisfirst two seasons at U of L.

With the hiring of legendary coachHoward Schnellenberger, Armstrong wasmoved to offensive tackle where he anchoredthe Cardinals line for the next two seasons.

Nobody is complaining after a long anddistinguished NFL career.

Armstrong did not allow a sack over hisfinal 18 games as a collegian. He appearedin the 1986 Senior Bowl and was named U ofL’s most outstanding lineman following hissenior season.

Armstrong was drafted with the 23rdpick of the first round by the New EnglandPatriots in 1987 to begin an association thatcontinued for 15 seasons.

A seven-time Pro Bowl honoree,Armstrong started 212 games for the Patriotsand is the franchise’s all-time leader in thatcategory passing Julius Adams.

Armstrong started 212 of a possible 220nonstrike games (including the last 118consecutive of his career) for the Patriots.

The 6-4, 295-pound tackle missed eightcontests in 1992 after suffering what wasfeared to be a career-ending knee injuryagainst the Buffalo Bills.

#34RAY BUCHANAN (CB)

He endeared himself to all Louisvillefans as “Big Play” Ray, but it was a careerthat almost wasn’t for Ray Buchanan.

Arriving as a wide receiver/ runningback from Maywood, Ill., Buchanan initiallybalked at being moved to the defensivebackfield, to the point of almosttransferring.

After some convincing by coachHoward Schnellenberger, Buchanan madethe switch and left his mark on the U of Land NFL history books as a two-timecollegiate All-American and NFL Pro Bowlselection.

Buchanan jumped on the scene as asophomore in 1990, piling up 59 tackles andthree interceptions in helping the Cardinalsto the 1990 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl (including akey field goal block against Memphis topreserve the bowl bid).

He then made his mark on the nationalstage as the Defensive MVP of the FiestaBowl with five tackles, a fumble recoveryand a recovery of a blocked punt in the endzone as Louisville drilled Alabama 34-7.

As a junior in 1991, Buchanan wasnamed a Playboy All-American as hecompiled 108 tackles and set a then-schoolrecord for interceptions with eight.

A three-time letterman for the Cardi-nals, Woodruff opened his career as areserve running back and wide receiverfrom New Richmond, Ohio but was movedto the secondary by then-head coach VinceGibson following his sophomore cam-paign.

In his two seasons as a defensive back,Woodruff collected 161 tackles whileintercepting three passes and recoveringthree fumbles.

Woodruff accounted for 97 total tacklesin 1977 as the Cardinals advanced to theIndependence Bowl.

Following his collegiate career,Woodruff was selected by the PittsburghSteelers in the sixth round of the 1979National Football League Draft.

Woodruff spent 11 of the next 12seasons as a member of the Steelers earninga victory in Super Bowl XIV as a rookie forthe Steeler dynasty.

His 37 career interceptions still ranksfifth all-time in the Steel Curtain recordbooks while his three interception returnsfor touchdowns is the third-most inPittsburgh history.

Woodruff was named the team's mostvaluable player following the 1992 seasonwhen he topped the team with fiveinterceptions. He led the Steelers in picksduring five different campaigns - 1982,1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989.

#10DWAYNE WOODRUFF (QB)

Five games into Johnny Unitas’freshman season (Unitas was allowed to playas a freshman because U of L didn’t belong tothe NCAA), head coach Frank Camp knewhe had something unique.

Tossed in against St. Bonaventurewhen U of L was trailing 19-0, Unitascompleted 11 consecutive passes, three forTDs, in a steady rain and helped put theCards in front 21-19.

But the Cards couldn’t stop St.Bonaventure from kicking a last-ditch fieldgoal and U of L lost 22-21.

Despite the loss, nothing could detractfrom Unitas’ astonishing performance.

With Unitas leading the way, U of Lwent on to win its next four games, includinga 35-28 victory over Houston. Louisville wasa 19-point underdog against the Cougars.

One of the greatest plays of Unitas’career took place in that game when theCardinals were leading 28-21 and had theball on their own eight-yard line in the fourthquarter.

After two unsuccessful running plays,Unitas dropped back into his own end-zone,sidestepped two defenders and threw a passto Babe Ray who scored a 92-yard TD.

In the next day’s Louisville Courier-Journal, reporter Jimmy Brown wrote: “IfCoach Frank Camp is smart, he’ll takeUnitas, enclose him in a cellophane bag andput him away with the Cardinals’ uniformsfor safekeeping over the winter.

Teammate Gene Sartini said: “Back atthat time he was just one of the guys. Welived at White Hall.

We were a losing football team whoused to go out and eat cheeseburgers at theDoghouse.”

In his sophomore season, Unitascompleted 77 of his 154 passes and threw 12TDs. U of L went 3-8 that year. At FloridaState, Unitas had one of his best games, completing 17 of 22 passes in a 41-14 victory.

U of L, though, almost fumbled awayJohnny Unitas after his sophomore season. After an administrative hassle which saw 15players dismissed from school, leaving theCardinal roster empty, Unitas thought aboutleaving and transferring to Indiana.

Bernie Crimmins, the Hoosier headcoach, suggested to Unitas that he wouldhave a better shot at pro ball in the Big Ten.

But Unitas decided against leaving theCardinals when he was reminded that

Indianashunnedhim earlierin hiscareer.

Unitasnow holdsjust a fewrecords atU of L,most ofthemeclipsedbyquarterbacksJohnMadeya,EdRubbert, Browning Nagle, Jeff Brohm, MartyLowe, Chris Redman, Dave Ragone andStefan LeFors. Unitas finished his careercompleting 247 of 502 passes for 2,912 yardsand 27 touchdowns.

The rest of Unitas’ story is welldocumented. He left Louisville when he wasthe ninth-round pick by the PittsburghSteelers in 1955 and was cut by them in anumbers game. The Steelers had fourquarterbacks; they only needed three. Unitaswas the odd man out.

Unitas took a job with a Pittsburgh tilingcompany following the cut and then helatched on with the Bloomfield Rams, a semi-pro team. He made six dollars a game. ButUnitas didn’t linger long in the bush league. The Colts got wind of him and invited him fora tryout. He made the team—signing for$7,000— and the Steelers made history for oneof the biggest blunders of all time.

Unitas was inducted into the NFL Hall ofFame in 1979 and his record 47-consecutivegame touchdown passes is a record comparedto Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak.

Sid Luckman once said: “Johnny Unitasis the greatest quarterback ever to play thegame—better than me, better than SammyBaugh, better than anyone.”

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. —Virginia Tech had a much better experience inthe River City this time around.

Marcus Vick threw twotouchdown passes and the 12th-ranked Hokiesrallied to beat No. 15 Louisville 35-24 in theGator Bowl.

Virginia Tech overcamenumerous penalties, the absence of a keyoffensive lineman and the ejection of adefensive leader to rebound from a surprisingloss to Florida State on the same field in theAtlantic Coast Conference championshipgame. The Hokies scored on three consecutivepossessions in the second half, turning a 17-10deficit into a 28-24 lead. James Anderson sealedthe victory when he intercepted HunterCantwell’s pass and returned it 39 yards for atouchdown with 5:04 to play.

Vick was huge in directing thecomeback, which snapped a five-gamewinning streak for Louisville. He completed a54-yard pass to David Clowney, and CedricHumes scored on the next play from 24 yards.

Chris Ellis sacked Cantwell onthe ensuing drive and knocked the ball loose.Anderson recovered near midfield, and Vickdid the rest.He threw two deep passes thatmight have been caught if not for passinterference penalties. Two plays later, hefound Jeff King for the go-ahead score.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.— The 1993 Cardinalsput a cap on an 8-3 regular season with an 18-7

victory over Michigan State at the LibertyBowl. Howard Schnellenberger’s squadregistered the first win ever by the Cardinalsover a Big Ten foe.

The conditions were hardly ideal for anaerial display, but quarterback Jeff Brohmchecked in with one of the guttiest efforts inthe history of Cardinal football.

Brohm, playing with two steel pins andone steel plate in the index finger of histhrowing hand completed 19-of-29 passes for197 yards and a touchdown amidst 20- degreetemperatures and freezing rain.

Most of that courage was shown in thefourth quarter. Entering the final frame,Louisville trailed 7-3.With 12:05 remaining,Brohm connected on a 25-yard strike to ReggieFerguson to put the Cardinals in front forgood.

Just over three minutes later, it was thedefense’s turn to make a big play. Pinned backto their one-yard line, the Spartans weremerely looking to get some breathing room fortheir offense. Running back Craig Thomas tookthe handoff and was immediately met by All-American defensive end Joe Johnson andreserve linebacker Tyrus McCloud for a safety.

On the ensuing possession, the Cardinalsmarched down the field for an insurancetouchdown when Anthony Shelman boltedinto the end zone from 11 yards out.

PASADENA, Calif. - In 1970, theUniversity of Louisville’s Missouri ValleyConference Championship team tied LongBeach State 24-24 at the Pasadena Bowl to closethe season.

Long Beach trailed Lee Corso’s Cardinalsalmost the entire game after John Madeyascored a pair of touchdowns.

On the strength of a safety and some niftyrunning by fullback Leon Burns, LBSUmanaged to forge a fourth-quarter tie.

A strange play near the end of the gamehad the Louisville faithful thinkingthey justmight secure a victory.

Madeya threw a screen pass to tailbackTom Jesukaitis, who was supposed to go out ofbounds. Instead Jesukaitis put the ball in theair again, throwing a pass to Cookie Brinkmanwho went in for a touchdown.

The rulebook prohibits more than one passon a single play, however, and U of L waspenalized five yards.

Louisville’s Paul Mattingly was namedDefensive Player of the Game.

He blocked a 32-yard field goal attempt inthe fourth quarter and was in on a game-high17 tackles
