2GOLDEN BEARS POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NOTESCAL REACHES WOMEN’S

COLLEGE WORLD SERIES FORSEVENTH STRAIGHT YEAR

The second-seeded Golden Bears qualified for their seventh consecutivetrip to the WCWS by virtue of defeating Baylor in the Waco Super Regionaland going 4-1 at the Fresno State Sub-Regional. This year’s appearancemarks the Bears’ 10th program trip to the WCWS. Cal (52-13) opens WCWSplay on Thursday against a familiar opponent – seventh-seeded UCLA (36-18). The Bruins have defeated the Bears in each of the last two WCWS titlegames and the two schools faced off in their 2003 WCWS opener, a gameCal won, 7-3, in 10 innings. First pitch at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium isscheduled for 2 p.m. CST and the game can be seen live on ESPN2. The Bearshave faced five teams that reached Oklahoma City this season and haveposted a combined 7-3 record against the field in 2005.

BEARS LOOK FOR RETURNTO TITLE GAME

Having played in the national championship game each of the past threeseasons, there’s no doubt that California has been a dominant force at theWCWS in recent years. In 2002, the Bears won the first NCAA title by awomen’s team in school history when they defeated Arizona, 6-0, in thechampionship game. Cal returned to the final game a year later, but fell toUCLA, 1-0, in nine innings. Last year, the Bruins again trumped the Bearsfor the crown, 3-1. In the last three years, Cal has posted an 11-4 record atthe WCWS.

2004 WORLD SERIES IN REVIEWCal opened last year’s WCWS with a 4-2 victory against Florida State,

highlighted by second baseman Jessica Pamanian’s two-run triple inthe third inning that plated center fielder Kaleo Eldredge and catcherHaley Woods for a 3-2 lead. The Bears then defeated Oklahoma, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals, where LSU handed Cal a 4-1 loss. TheBears rebounded to defeat the Tigers by the same score later in theday, with right fielder Alex Sutton going 3-for-4 with two RBI, andadvanced to the championship game. In the final against UCLA,Cal took a 1-0 first-inning lead on a Pamanian single thatscored left fielder Lindsay James. Starter Kelly Ander-son was perfect through four innings before allowing agame-tying homer to the Bruins’ Claire Sua in the fifth.UCLA tacked on two more runs in the inning en routeto the national title. Anderson, Pamanian and thirdbaseman Vicky Galindo were named to the all-tour-nament team. Anderson went 2-1, struck out 14 andposted a 1.47 ERA. Galindo hit .412 and scored twice, while Pamanian batted .400 with four RBI.

CAL HISTORICALLYAT THE WCWS

Although it hasn’t been until recently that the Bearshave made their mark at the WCWS, Cal has been a playerin the sport’s most important competition for two-and-a-half decades. Cal first qualified for the AIAW World Seriesfrom 1980-82, putting together a trio of fifth-place finishes. The Bears returned to theNCAA’s version of the WCWS in 1986, takingthird. Current head coach Diane Ninemirefirst directed the Bears to a WCWS in 1992 when

Cal placed fifth. Cal’s only other appearance at the WCWS prior to theircurrent seven-year run was a fifth-place showing in 1996. The Bears are18-16 all-time at the WCWS, 16-14 under Ninemire. In Cal’s nine previoustrips to the NCAA WCWS, the Bears have won the opening game six times.

CAL IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENTThe Bears are making their 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament

and have advanced to the postseason for 20 consecutive years, the longestactive streak of any school in the Pac-10 Conference. The Bears are 67-44 all-time in the NCAA competition.

BEARS SURVIVE MARATHONSESSION TO WIN WACO

SUPER REGIONALSSenior Kelly Anderson threw a three-hitter and Cal took game No. 1

of the Super Regional from Baylor, 8-0, in six innings May 27. But winningthe series from the host school proved to be far less easy the following day.The Bears had to overcome two rain delays and a six-and-a-half hourpostponement just too begin the second game, a contest Baylor won, 4-1, to force a third and decisive game. The Cal bats came around in thenightcap, as the Bears scored all their runs in the first two innings, and juniorKristina Thorson pitched a one-hitter en route to a 7-1 victory. The serieswrapped up near midnight on May 28, almost 13 hours after Cal hadoriginally arrived at the park.

RESILIENT BEARS MASTERFRESNO STATE REGIONAL

Cal’s march to the Super Regional round was marked with late-inningheroics and clutch hitting and pitching performances. After losingtheir NCAA Tournament opener, the top-seeded Bears had to winfour games in two days to advance out of Fresno. Cal opened thetournament May 19 with a 3-1 loss to BYU, a defeat which

snapped Cal’s 13-game regional winning streak and a seven-yearopening-game regional winning streak. The Bears rebounded

the next day against Long Beach State, although it tooka two-strike, two-out, two-run double from catcherHaley Woods in the top of the seventh to pull out a4-3 victory against the 49ers. In the loser’s bracketfinal later that night, senior Kelly Anderson no-hitBYU – just the second Cal no-hitter in postseasonhistory – as Cal pounded the Cougars, 9-0, in fiveinnings. In the first game of the regional champi-onship May 21, Fresno State leapt out to a 1-0lead in the second inning before a run by seniorsecond baseman Jessica Pamanian in the fourthand scores by senior third baseman Vicky Galindoand junior left fielder Lindsay James in the fifthgave Cal the win. Anderson scattered two hits in sixinnings of relief to earn her second victory of thetournament. Anderson upped her own ante in theregional clincher, tossing her second no-hitter of thetournament as Cal advanced to the Super Regionalswith a 1-0 win. In perhaps her finest pitching perfor-mance of the year, Anderson faced just two battersover the minimum and didn’t allow a runner past firstbase. A first-inning leadoff home run by Galindo held

up for the Bears. In capturing the regional and eliminating all three teams, the Bears won four straight games after losing the first of a regional for thefirst time in program history. Cal’s comeback also marked the first time theBears had won four consecutive games when facing elimination.

CAL HELD IN HIGH REGARDIN 2005

The Bears entered this season as the preseason No. 1 in the NFCA/USAToday, USA Softball/ESPN.com and Pac-10 coaches poll – all firsts inprogram history. Over the course of the year, Cal didn’t disappoint thevoters. The Bears enter the WCWS ranked No. 2 in the nation in both pollsbehind top-ranked Michigan.

BEARS EARN FIRST PAC-10CHAMPIONSHIP IN 18 YEARS

Cal won four of its final five games over the last two weekends of leagueplay and had a chance to win the Pac-10 Conference crown outright, butafter a 2-1 loss to Arizona State on the final day of the regular season, theBears had to settle for a four-way split of the title. Cal, Stanford, Arizonaand Oregon State all finished the Pac-10 season at 13-8, though OSUreceived the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid by league tie-breaker rules. The split is Cal’s best finish since taking the inaugural Pac-

10 banner in 1987 and the best mark for a DianeNinemire-coached team. Coupled with a second-placeshowing last year, the 2005 co-championship gave Calits best back-to-back conference showing. The 13-8Pac-10 mark is also Cal’s best conference recordsince going 20-8 in 1995.

CAL KEEPS LOSSESAT A MINIMUM

The Bears opened the 2005 season with nineconsecutive wins, posted a season-high 12-gamewinning streak early in the campaign, and enter theWCWS having won 10 of 13 games against some ofthe nation’s top teams. In between all the success, theBears have suffered just 13 losses, tying with lastyear’s Cal squad for least under head coach DianeNinemire. Additionally, Cal’s eight Pac-10 lossesin 2005 were the fewest since 1991 (6). The 2005Bears also have an excellent shot to set a newmark for victories in a season. The 2002 WCWS-title squad holds that record with 56.

ANDERSON SEIZES THE MOMENTSenior pitcher Kelly Anderson’s postseason prowess has been a huge

reason why the Bears qualified for the 2005 WCWS. At the Fresno StateRegional, Anderson enjoyed the top week of her season and, perhaps, thebest stretch of her four-year career. The senior went 3-0 and tossed no-hitters in the loser’s bracket final against BYU and championship gameagainst Fresno State. She finished the tournament with a 0.00 ERA (allowingone unearned run) and gave up just five hits in 20.1 innings. Anderson’smastery continued into the Super Regionals, where she three-hit Baylor ingame No. 1. In the second game, she scattered two hits over five inningsbefore allowing four runs – the first earned runs Anderson had given up in31.2 postseason innings. She enters the WCWS with a 4-1 record and 0.87ERA in 32.1 innings, and has allowed 14 hits, five runs (four earned) anda .133 opposing average. On the year, Anderson is 28-8 with a 1.20 ERAand leads Cal with 13 shutouts and a .146 opposing batting average.

THORSON COMES THROUGHIt took Cal’s most important contest of 2005 to produce one of the Bears’

top pitching performances of the year, but junior Kristina Thorson wasgame for the occasion. In the Super Regional final against Baylor, Thorsontossed a one-hitter, struck out 12 and faced one batter over the minimum.Down the Pac-10 stretch, Thorson was nearly flawless. She didn’t suffera loss in her last 11 appearances of the regular season (4/10-5/13) and enteredthe postseason having allowed just one earned run in her last 31.1 innings

pitched. On the season, Thorson (23-5)leads the Bears with a 1.15 ERA, 220

strikeouts and has walked just 29 hit-ters. She combines with Anderson to

form one of the top pitching staffs inthe nation, if not the country’s

best 1-2 punch.

ELDERSDIRECTBEARS

The 2005 Cal lineup isloaded with seniors, sixof whom were on theroster when the Bearswon the 2002 WCWS.

Picher Kelly Ander-son is fifth in Cal

program his-tory in victo-

ries (83),

has a career 1.26 ERA andhas won 20-plus games forthree consecutive seasons.Centerfielder KaleoEldredge has been one ofCal’s most consistenthitters, batting nearly.300 each year with atleast 50 hits. She is alsofirst all-time in runsscored in the schoolrecord book. Enter-ing the WCWS,Chelsea Spencerhas started an as-tounding 275 consecutive games at shortstop. She has teamed with secondbaseman Jessica Pamanian – who’s also had at least 50 hits every year– to form the core of Cal’s infield. Utility players Kristen Bayless andJessica Vernaglia have been invaluable to Cal off the bench as positionplayers, pinch hitters and pinch runners. Bayless had committed just oneerror in the past three seasons.

NEWCOMERS MAKE ANIMPACT FOR CAL

Four of the five first-year Bears have been regular contribu-tors to Cal’s success in 2005. Freshman first baseman Julie

Meyer has started all 65 games for Cal with a .992 fieldingpercentage. Designated player Emily Friedman, a transfer from Wiscon-sin, enters the WCWS batting .293 on the season, but is hitting .364 in eightpostseason games. Sophomore Jeana Gevas, a transfer from Cal Poly, hasseen the majority of her time in the designated player role. Freshman ErikaRacklin leads the Bears in substitute appearances (42) and has 15 steals.Freshman Katelyn Valenzuela has provided late-inning relief at secondbase and shortstop and as a pinch runner.

GALINDO HOLDS DOWN THETOP OF THE LINEUP

A first team All-American, All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 selectionlast year, senior third baseman Vicky Galindo is having another superbseason in the leadoff role for Cal in 2005. WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NOTESLINDSAY JAMES BACK IN FORMFollowing a 17-game hiatus due to a broken left hand (4/9-5/14) suffered

in an at bat vs. Washington, junior left fielder Lindsay James returned tothe Cal lineup for the Fresno State Regional. James, whose current .450average has her poised to become the first Cal batter to hit .400 in 10 seasons,is shades from Gillian Boxx’s program single-season mark of .466, set in1995. James is hitting .333 in the postseason.

CAL TAKES HOME THEACCOLADES

Even before this season’s All-America team has been announced, the2005 Bears have become one of the most decorated units in program history. No less than eight Cal players – the most of any school in the conference– were named to the All-Pac-10 team. Third baseman Vicky Galindo, pitcher Kelly Anderson and pitcher Kristina Thorson garnered first teamhonors, while center fielder Kaleo Eldredge, left fielder Lindsay Jamesand catcher Haley Woods took home second team awards. Second basemanJessica Pamanian and shortstop Chelsea Spencer were tabbed honor-able mention. The Bears also placed five players on the NFCA All-PacificRegion team – again, the most of any region institution and highest total sincesix Cal competitors made the 1993 team. Galindo and Eldredge were Cal’sfirst team honorees, while Thorson, James and Woods were named to thesecond team. Additionally, Anderson and Pamanian were named to theCoSIDA District VIII Academic All-District first team.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFULSEASON FOR NINEMIRE

Diane Ninemire, already the winningest coach inCalifornia athletics history, earned her 800th career

win in the Bears’ 1-0 victory against No. 3 ArizonaMay 12. Ninemire (807-382) is just the 20th Division I

head coach to reach the plateau. She led the Golden Bears tothe 2002 WCWS title – the first NCAA championship by any

Cal women’s team. In 18 seasons, she has directed Cal to 10WCWS appearances, as well as reached the postseason and won at

least 35 games each year.

FIELD GEMSEntering the WCWS, Cal’s .978 team fielding percentage in 2005

ranks first all-time in program history. While center fielder KaleoEldredge leads the way with a 1.000 fielding mark, two other Calstarters – catcher Haley Woods (.994) and first baseman JulieMeyer (.992) – have posted impressive clips at high-activitypositions. Cal’s .978 fielding percentage tied for first in the Pac-10this year. The Bears have committed just 41 errors all year (65games), which has led to only 16 unearned runs.

GOLDEN BEAR NOTESThe Bears, who average 4.8 runs per contest, have been shutout just

three times in 2005 … Cal has lost just three non-conference games, tyinglast year’s squad for fewest in Diane Ninemire’s tenure as head coach

... the Bears are 44-4 when leading after five innings and their only twolosses when leading after six have come on walk-off homers (3/18 vs.

Northwestern; 4/2 at Arizona) … Cal is 44-6 when scoring first … the Bearsare 39-5 against non-conference teams and 34-0 when the opponent makes

two-plus errors … Cal lost 11 games this year due to rain ... the Bears are40-2 when scoring at least three runs.
