SAFETY CHECK LIST

To fully appreciate the pleasures, en-joyment and excitement of boatingthere are some basic rules that shouldbe observed and followed by any boat-er. Failure to follow this safety infor-mation and safe boating rules couldresult in injury, including the possi-bility of death to you, your passen-ger(s), the people you lend your wa-tercraft to, or other water users.

General Bombardier recommends a mini-

mum operator age of 16 years old. A boating safety course is recom-

mended and may be required inyour province or state.

The performance of this watercraftmay significantly exceed that of oth-er craft you may have operated.Make sure to become completelyfamiliar with the controls and oper-ation of the watercraft before em-barking on your first trip or taking ona passenger(s). If you have not hadthe opportunity to do so, practicedriving solo in a suitable traffic freearea and feel the response of eachcontrol. Be fully familiar with all con-trols before accelerating above idlespeed. Do not assume that allPWCs handle identically. Each mod-el differs, often substantially.

The operator of the watercraft con-trols, and is responsible for the wa-tercraft’s safe operation. He/shealso has the responsibility to requirethat passenger(s) and people, towhom he/she lends the watercraftto, read and understand this safetysection Operator’s Guide, the SafetyVideocassette and the on-productwarning/caution labels.

Ensure that all passengers knowhow to swim and how to reboardthe watercraft from the water.

Boarding in deep water can bestrenuous. Practice in chest-deepwater before operating or embark-ing your watercraft in deep water.

A PWC will not self-right if capsized. The operator and passengers mustknow the proper righting procedureas explained in the Operator’s Guide.Make sure engine is off before roll-ing over the watercraft.

Your local Power Squadron or state/provincial authorities will be pleasedto conduct a complementary safetyexamination of your watercraft andhelp you define your needs.

Never ride after consuming drugs oralcohol or if you feel tired or ill.

When fueling, follow the safe boatingfueling instructions explicitly, as pro-vided in your Operator’s Guide andthose given to you at the marina. Al-ways verify fuel level before useand during the ride. Apply the prin-ciple of 1/3 fuel to destination, 1/3back and 1/3 reserve fuel supply. Donot carry spare fuel or flammableliquids in any of the storage or en-gine compartments.

Always stop the engine before fuel-ing and never allow anyone to remainon the watercraft while fueling. Al-ways remember that fuel is flamma-ble and explosive under certain con-ditions. Do not smoke or allow openflames or sparks in the vicinity.

Respect no wake zones, the rightsof other water users and the environ-ment. As the “skipper” and ownerof a watercraft you are responsiblefor damage to other crafts caused bythe wake of your watercraft. Allowno one to throw refuse overboard.

Don’t forget that all persons mustassist other boaters in an emergency.

10 SAFETY INFORMATION

GETTING UNDERWAY

To Wear The operator and passenger(s) must

wear a Coast Guard approved Per-sonal Flotation Device (PFD) that issuitable for PWC use.

An operator and the watercraft’spassenger(s) should have ready ac-cess to shatterproof glasses shouldriding conditions or personal prefer-ence warrant. Wind, water sprayand speed may cause a person’seyes to water and create blurred vi-sion.

The operator and passenger(s) ofPWCs must wear protective cloth-ing, including:– a wet suit bottom or thick, tightly

woven, snug fitting clothing thatprovides equivalent protection.Thin bike shorts for examplewould not be appropriate. Severeinternal injuries can occur if wa-ter is forced into body cavities asa result of falling into water or be-ing near jet thrust nozzle. Normalswimwear does not adequatelyprotect against forceful water en-try into the lower body open-ing(s) of males or females.

– footwear, gloves and goggles/glasses are also recommended. Some type of lightweight, flexiblefoot protection is recommended. This will help reduce possible in-jury, should you step on sharp un-derwater objects.

– NOTE: The use of a helmet is notrecommended for recreationalriding.

Due to the close proximity of otherracers, it is recommended that anapproved personal watercraft hel-met be used during racing events.Read and follow all instructions andwarnings provided with the helmet.

12 SAFETY INFORMATION

To Bring Always carry the regulatory safety

items and have them convenientlyon board available for use. Check thelocal regulations or consult your au-thorized Sea-Doo dealer. Such re-quired safety items usually include, without limitation, a sound signalingdevice such as a whistle, a water-tight flashlight or approved flares, abuoyant heaving line, an anchor andrope*, a bailer*, and an appropriatefire extinguisher*. The items markedwith a “*” are not required in Canadaif all persons on board a PWC arewearing a PFD.

A cellular telephone in a waterproofbag or container has also beenfound to be beneficial to boaterswhen in distress or just for contact-ing someone on shore.

To Do Read and understand all warning/

caution labels on your Sea-Doo PWC,your Operator’s Guide, all other safe-ty documents, and watch properlyyour Safety Videocassette, beforeoperating. Always keep in mind thatthe ““ symbol, the Warning sym-bol, identifies an instruction which, ifnot followed, may cause serious per-sonal injuries including the possibilityof death.

Check local and federal boatinglaws applicable to the waterwayswhere you intend to use your water-craft. Learn the local rules of theroad. Know and understand the ap-plicable navigation system (such asbuoys and signs).

Know the waters in which the wa-tercraft is to be operated. Current, tides, rapids, hidden obstacles, wakes and waves etc. can affectsafe operation. It is not advisable tooperate the watercraft in rough orinclement weather.

For safety reasons and proper care, always perform “Daily Pre-OperationChecks” as specified in your Opera-tor’s Guide before operating yourwatercraft.

Keep the engine shut-off cord (safe-ty lanyard) attached to the operator’sPFD at all times and keep it freefrom handlebars so that enginestops if operator falls off. Afterriding, remove cord from PWC toavoid unauthorized use by childrenor others. If operator falls off the wa-tercraft and safety lanyard is unat-tached, the watercraft will not stop.

SAFETY INFORMATION 13

OPERATION

Collision Avoidance Do not release throttle when trying

to steer away from objects. Youneed throttle to steer.

Always keep a constant lookout forother water users, other boats orobjects, especially when turning.Be alert for conditions that may limityour visibility or block your vision ofothers.

Respect the rights of other recre-ationists and/or bystanders and al-ways keep a safe distance from allother craft, people and objects.

Do not wake or wave jump, ridethe surf line or attempt to spray orsplash others with your watercraft. You may misjudge the ability of thewatercraft or your own riding skillsand strike a boat or person.

This watercraft has the capability ofturning more sharply than otherboats, however, unless in an emer-gency, do not negotiate sharp, highspeed turns. Such maneuvers makeit hard for others to avoid you or un-derstand where you are going. Also, you and/or your passenger(s) couldbe thrown from the watercraft.

Like any other craft, this PWC hasno brake. Stopping distance willvary depending on initial speed, load, wind, and water conditions.Practice stopping and docking in asafe, traffic free area to have an ideaof how long it will take to stop thewatercraft under varying conditions.

Maintaining or increasing speed maybe necessary to avoid a collision.

Safe Riding Always keep in mind that as the

throttle lever is released to idle po-sition, less directional control isavailable, and as the engine is off, directional control is lost. You needthrottle to steer.

Ride within your limits and level ofriding ability. Avoid aggressive ma-neuvers to reduce the risk of loss ofcontrol, ejection and collision. Un-derstand and respect the perfor-mance or your watercraft.

Always ride responsibly and safely.Use common sense and courtesy.

While your watercraft has the capac-ity of operating at high speeds, it isstrongly recommended that highspeed operation only be appliedwhen ideal conditions exist and arepermitted. Higher speed operationrequires a higher degree of skill andincreases the risk of severe injuries.

The forces generated on the body ofriders while turning, negotiatingwaves or wakes, operating in chop-py waters, or falling off the water-craft, especially at higher speeds, may cause injury including the possi-bility of broken legs and other bonesor more serious injuries. Remainflexible and avoid sharp turns.

In shallow water, proceed with cau-tion and at very low speeds. Ground-ing or abrupt stops may result in in-jury. Debris may also be picked upand be thrown rearward by the jetpump onto people or property.

Do not use the watercraft’s reverse,if so equipped, to stop. You or yourpassenger(s) could be violentlyejected forward onto the handlebarsor even off the watercraft onto thehazard.

PWCs are not designed for night-time operation.

14 SAFETY INFORMATION

Operator/Passenger Awareness Never turn handlebar while someone

is nearby rear of watercraft. Keepaway from steering moving parts(nozzle, side vanes, linkage, etc.).

Do not start or operate the water-craft if anyone is seated on the sundeck, if so equipped, or swim plat-form, or is nearby in the water. Wa-ter and/or debris exiting jet thrustnozzle can cause severe injury.

The operator and passenger(s)should be properly seated beforestarting or moving the watercraft, and at all times when watercraft isin motion. All passenger(s) shouldbe instructed to use the handholdsor seat straps provided, or in the al-ternative on a PWC, to hold thewaist of the person in front of them.

When accelerating on a PWC with apassenger(s), whether from a com-plete stop or while underway, alwaysdo so progressively. Fast accelera-tion may cause your passenger(s) toloose their balance or grip and fallrearward off the watercraft. Makesure that your passenger(s) know of,or anticipate, any rapid acceleration.

Keep away from intake grate whileengine is on. Items such as longhair, loose clothing, or PFD strapscan become entangled in movingparts resulting in severe injury ordrowning.

To prevent accidental starting, al-ways detach the safety lanyard fromthe watercraft when swimmers areboarding or nearby, or during remov-al of any weeds or debris from theintake grate.

It should be remembered that sun, wind, alcohol, drugs, fatigue and ill-ness, may impair your judgementand reaction time.

On a PWC, never place your feetand legs in the water to aid turning.

Maneuverabitily of the Watercraft/Towing Do not overload the watercraft or

take on more passengers than des-ignated for the particular watercraft.Overloading can affect maneuver-ability, stability and performance.

Avoid adding on accessories, orequipment which may alter yourcontrol of the watercraft.

The watercraft may be fitted withtow eyelets which can be used toattach a ski rope.

Riding with a passenger(s) or pullinga tube, skier or wakeboarder makesthe watercraft handle differentlyand requires greater skill.

Always respect the safety and com-fort of your passenger(s) and per-son being towed on skis, wake-board or other water products.

Always carry an observer when pull-ing a tube, skier or wakeboarder, proceed with only as much speedas required and follow the observ-er’s instructions. Unless absolutelynecessary, do not make tight, sharpturns. Keep a safe distance from thedocks, other swimmers, craft or ob-jects.

Use a tow rope of sufficient lengthand size and make sure it is ade-quately secured to your watercraft. While some craft are equipped orcan be fitted with a specially de-signed towing mechanism avoid in-stalling a tow pole on a PWC. It canbecome a hazard should someonefall on it.

Be advised that serious injury can re-sult if the tow rope becomes slackduring a tight turn or when circling. The rope could become wrappedaround the neck or limbs of a personthat has fallen in the water.

Don’t forget: Ride smart from the start and we all

win!

OPERATING RULES

Operating a watercraft can be com-pared with driving unmarked highwaysand roads. To prevent collisions oravoid other boaters, a system of oper-ating rules must be followed. It’s notonly common sense...it’s the law!

Remember these Rules of the RoadKnow the Right of Way RulesGenerally keep to your right and safelyavoid other craft by keeping a safe dis-tance from other craft, people and ob-jects.

1. RED light2. GREEN light (Yield zone)

CrossingGive right of way to craft ahead and toyour right. Never cross in front of aboat.

Meeting Head-OnKeep right.

PassingGive right of way to other craft andkeep clear.

Navigation SystemNavigational aids, such as signs orbuoys, can assist you identify safe wa-ters. Buoys will indicate whether youshould keep to the right (starboard) orto the left (port) of the buoy or to whichchannel you can continue. They mayalso indicate whether you are enteringa restricted or controlled area such asa no wake or speed zone. They mayalso indicate hazards or pertinent boat-ing information. Markers maybe locat-ed on shore or on the water. They canalso indicate speed limits, no powercraft or boating, anchorage and otheruseful information. (The shape of eachtype of marker will provide assistance).• Make sure you know and under-

stand the navigation system appli-cable to the waterways where youintend to use the watercraft.

CONTROLS/INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENTS FUNCTIONS

1) Safety Lanyard(engine cut-off cord)

The safety lanyard cap should be se-curely snapped onto its post to be fullyoperational.Pulling the safety lanyard cap from itspost stops the engine operation. At-tach the safety lanyard to the opera-tor’s Personal Flotation Device (PFD)and snap the cap to the post to be ableto start the engine.

Two short beeps indicates the systemis ready to allow engine starting. Oth-erwise, refer to the TROUBLESHOOT-ING section for the coded signals chart.

TYPICAL1. Safety lanyard cap on the post2. Safety lanyard secured on operator’s PFD

If engine is not started within 5 sec-onds after installing the safety lanyardon its post, 4 short beeps every 3 sec-ond interval will sound for approxi-mately 2 hours to remind you to startthe engine or to remove safety lan-yard. Afterwards, the beeps will stop. The same will occur when safety lan-yard is left on its post 5 seconds afterengine is stopped. Always ensure safety lanyard is notleft on its post after engine is stopped.IMPORTANT: Leaving the safety lan-yard on its post when engine is notrunning will slowly discharge the bat-tery.

Digitally Encoded Security System (DESS)The safety lanyard cap specifically con-tains an electronic circuit that gives ita unique electronic serial number. Thisis the equivalent of a conventional key. This safety lanyard cannot be used onanother watercraft and conversely, theone from another watercraft cannot beused on your watercraft.

 WARNING

While engine can be stopped us-ing the engine start/stop button, good habits recommend that thesafety lanyard also be disconnect-ed when stopping.

(#

 WARNING

Should the engine be stopped, wa-tercraft directional control is lost(reduced on models with O.P.A.S.TM).Always disconnect safety lanyardwhen watercraft is not in operationin order to prevent accidental en-gine starting or to avoid unautho-rized use by children or others ortheft.

35

However, the DESS brings a great flex-ibility. You can buy an additional safetylanyard and have it programmed foryour watercraft. The DI models also offers a specialsafety lanyard — the SEA-DOO LKTM

(SEA-DOO Learning KeyTM) — whichelectronically limits the speed of thewatercraft to approximately 55 km/h(35 MPH) therefore enabling first timeusers and less experienced operatorsto learn how to operate the watercraftwhile gaining the necessary confidenceand control.

To have additional safety lanyard, referto an authorized SEA-DOO dealer.

2) HandlebarThe handlebar controls the direction ofthe watercraft. Turning the handlebarto the right steers the watercraft to theright and inversely.

3) Throttle LeverWhen the throttle lever is squeezed, the watercraft accelerates. When fullyreleased, engine automatically slowsdown to idle speed and watercraft isgradually stopped by water drag.

Carburetor-Equipped Models

Do not depress lever unnecessarilywhen engine is not running. A fuel ac-celerator pump delivers fuel to the en-gine each time throttle lever is applied.CAUTION: Engine can be flooded ifthrottle lever is unnecessarily ap-plied several times. If engine is flood-ed, it will not start. Refer to SPECIALPROCEDURES for instructions.

4) Engine Start/Stop Button

All Models

To start engine, depress and hold thestart/stop button. Release immediate-ly after engine is started.

 WARNING

While engine can be stopped us-ing the engine start/stop button, good habits recommend that thesafety lanyard also be disconnect-ed when stopping.

$#

 WARNING

Check handlebar and correspond-ing steering nozzle and side vanes(if so equipped) operation beforestarting. Never turn handlebarwhile someone is nearby rear ofwatercraft. Keep away from steer-ing moving parts (nozzle, sidevanes, linkage etc.).

CAUTION: On RFI and DI models, never use injector cleaning products. They may contain additive that coulddamage injector components.

Recommended Oil

Use only two-stroke engine injection oilsold by authorized SEA-DOO dealers.

➀ If BOMBARDIER injection oil is notavailable, API TC high-quality low ashtwo-stroke injection oil may be used.

➁ BOMBARDIER FORMULA XP-S IIsynthet ic in ject ion o i l andBOMBARDIER injection oil arecompatible, they can be mixed to-gether.

➂ CAUTION: The BOMBARDIER For-mula XP-S II oil is specially formu-lated and tested for the severe re-quirements of the 787 RFI and 947DI engines. Use of any other brandtwo-stroke oil may void the limitedwarranty. Use only BOMBARDIERFormula XP-S II oil. There is noknown equivalent on the marketfor the moment. If a high qualityequivalent were available, it couldbe used.

BOMBARDIER injection oil is a specialblend of basic oil and additives espe-cially selected to ensure unequalled lu-brication, engine cleanliness and mini-mum spark plug fouling. The BOMBARDIER Formula XP-S IIsynthetic injection oil provides supe-rior lubrication, reduced engine com-ponent wear and oil deposit, thusmaintaining maximum-level perfor-mance and antifriction properties. Thissynthetic injection oil meets the latestASTM and JASO standards by ensur-ing high biodegradability and low ex-haust smoke.CAUTION: Never use four-stroke pe-troleum or synthetic motor oil andnever mix these with outboard motoroil. Do not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2or TC-W3 outboard two-stroke en-gine oils or ashless two-stroke engineoils. Avoid mixing different brands ofAPI TC oil as resulting chemical reac-tions may cause severe engine dam-age.

Oil Injection SystemThis watercraft features an oil injectionsystem which does not require manualfuel/oil mixing.A sufficient amount of injection oil shouldbe maintained in the reservoir.NOTE: It is recommended to carry a 1 Lof spare injection oil.The use of a funnel is recommendedto pour the oil into the reservoir. Stopfilling as soon as oil appears at approx-imately 13 mm (1/2 in) from top of res-ervoir. Do not overfill.CAUTION: Always maintain a suffi-cient amount of injection oil in the oilreservoir. Check and refill every timeyou refuel if necessary. Do not overfill. If the engine runs out of oil, severe en-gine damage will occur. If the oil res-ervoir is found almost empty, air canenter in the system and it should bebled. Immediately refer to an autho-rized SEA-DOO dealer to have the oilinjection system inspected.

 WARNING

Do not overfill. Reinstall cap andfully tighten. Oil is flammable. Al-ways wipe off any oil spillage fromthe bilge.

BREAK-IN PERIOD

CAUTION: Scrupulously follow theinstructions of this section. Failureto do so may reduce the engine’s lifeand/or performance. With SEA-DOO watercraft poweredby Rotax® engines, a break-in period of10 hours is required before continuousoperation at full throttle.

All Models except DI Models

To achieve a good break-in, throttle le-ver should not be depressed more than3/4, however, brief acceleration andspeed variations contribute to a goodbreak-in.

DI Models

To achieve a good break-in, vary theengine speed every few minutes withbrief wide open throttle accelerationsof up to 15 seconds.

All Models

CAUTION: Continued wide openthrottle runs and prolonged cruisingwithout speed variations should beavoided, this can cause engine dam-age during the break-in period.

All Models except DI Models

To assure additional protection duringthe initial engine break-in, it is recom-mended to add 1 L of the same oil asin the injection oil reservoir in the fueltank for the first full fuel tank fillingonly.

To add injection oil in the fuel tank, pro-ceed as follows:Fill fuel tank with approximately 15 li-ters (4 gal) of gasoline; then, add theinjection oil in the fuel.Fill up fuel tank with gasoline. Do notoverfill.NOTE: It is important to proceed in thisorder to allow a proper mixing of the oilin the gasoline. If oil is added first in anempty fuel tank, fuel lines will be filledup with injection oil, which will keepthe engine from starting.CAUTION: Remove and clean sparkplugs after engine break-in.

DI Models

NOTE: Do not add injection oil in thefuel tank for the break-in.

Jet Pump Water IntakeRemove weeds, shells, debris or any-thing else that could restrict the flowof water and damage cooling systemor propulsion unit. Clean as necessary. If any obstruction can not be removed, refer to an authorized SEA-DOO dealerfor servicing.

TYPICAL1. Water intake2. Ride plate

Inspect leading edges of the impeller,if they have nicks or bends performancewill be greatly reduced.

BilgeShould water be present in the bilge, tilt the watercraft to the rear and un-screw drain plugs to completely emptythe bilge.Secure bilge drain plugs.

Water Flow in Cooling System (only when temperature is below or close to freezing point)In Northern areas, if watercraft is to beused when temperature is below orclose to freezing point (0°C (32°F)) or ifwatercraft was left unused while tem-perature was below or close to freez-ing point, water may be frozen in cool-ing system hoses. This could causecooling system overheating. To ensureit is properly working, do the followingprior to using the watercraft:– The procedure is to be performed

with watercraft out of water.– Connect a garden hose to the flush-

ing connector at jet pump.– Perform the flushing operation as ex-

plained in POST-OPERATION CARE.– Ensure water flows out of jet pump.

Otherwise, water is frozen in coolingsystem and restricts water flow. Donot operate the watercraft in thiscondition.

NOTE: Pay attention that some waterwill also flow out of exhaust outlet.Make sure water is effectively flowingout of jet pump.CAUTION: Operating watercraft withfrozen water in cooling system mightlead to engine components damage.NOTE: When water freezes, damageto engine components should not oc-cur because of water expansion, butbecause it prevents full flow of coolingwater.– Either wait until ice melts or pour

some hot water to cooling systemcomponents and to engine. Then, perform the flushing operation againto make sure water properly flowsout of jet pump. If you need assis-tance, refer to an authorized Sea-Doodealer.

 WARNING

Make sure drain plugs are proper-ly secured prior to launching thewatercraft in water.

57

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Principle of OperationPropulsionThe engine is directly coupled to adrive shaft which, in turn, rotates animpeller. This impeller is accurately ad-justed in a housing where the water isdrawn up from underneath the water-craft. Then the water flows throughthe impeller to a venturi. The venturiaccelerates the water and producesthrust to move the watercraft. De-pressing the throttle lever increasesengine speed and therefore watercraftspeed.

TYPICAL

The shift lever should be in the forwardposition in order for the watercraft to ad-vance.

Neutral and Reverse(if so equipped)

To find the neutral, set in reverse thenpush back until the watercraft stopsmoving backwards. The reverse gate will be in the middleposition, directing half of the thrust to-ward the front of the watercraft to min-imize watercraft movement.

 WARNING

Always perform the PRE-OPERATIONCHECKS before operating the water-craft. Become thoroughly familiarwith all controls and the function ofeach. Should any control or instruc-tion not be fully understood, refer toan authorized SEA-DOO dealer.

 WARNING

Whenever the engine is to be start-ed, the operator and passenger(s)should always be properly sittingon the watercraft and be wearingprotective clothing including a CoastGuard approved PFD and a wet suitbottom.

1='#

 WARNING

Keep away from intake grate whileengine is on. Items such as longhair, loose clothing or personal flo-tation device straps can becomeentangled in moving parts result-ing in severe injury or drowning.

 WARNING

Never use jet pump components asa supporting point to board the wa-tercraft. Shift lever should only beused when the engine is idling andwatercraft is completely stopped.Never rev the engine at high RPMin reverse. Do not use reverse tostop the watercraft. Only use re-verse at slow speed and for theshortest time possible. Always en-sure the path behind is clear of ob-jects and persons including chil-dren playing in shallow water.

 WARNING

When the watercraft is in neutralposition, the drive shaft and impel-ler are still turning.

1. Shift lever in neutral position

1. Reverse gate in middle position

To obtain reverse, pull shift lever com-pletely. The reverse gate will be in down-ward position, directing all the thrust to-ward the front of the watercraft.

1. Shift lever in reverse position

1. Reverse gate in downward position

NOTE: To obtain maximum efficiencyand control from the reverse, increaseengine speed to slightly above idle.Too much RPM will create water tur-bulence and reduce reverse efficiency. In reverse position, turn the handlebarin the same direction that you want tomove the rear of the watercraft. For example, to steer the rear of the wa-tercraft to the left side, turn the handle-bar to the left side.

Variable Trim System(if so equipped)The variable trim system (VTS) chang-es the angle of the jet pump nozzle toprovide the operator with a fast, effec-tive system to compensate for load, thrust, riding position and water condi-tions. Correctly adjusted, it can im-prove handling, reduce porpoising, andposition the watercraft at its best ridingangle to attain maximum performance. When first using the watercraft, theoperator should become familiar withthe use of the variable trim system(VTS) at varying speeds and water con-ditions. A mid-range trim is generallyused when cruising. Experience alonewill dictate the best trim for the condi-tions. During the watercraft break-inperiod, when lower speeds are recom-mended, it is an excellent opportunityto gain familiarity of trim adjustmentand its effects. When the nozzle is positioned in an up-ward angle, the water thrust directs thebow of the watercraft upward. This po-sition is used to optimize high speed.

TYPICAL1. Push on arrow pointing upward on VTS

button2. Bow up3. Nozzle up

NOTE: VTS position is indicated on abar gauge in the information center. When the nozzle is directed down-ward, the bow is forced downward andenhances the watercraft turning capa-bilities. As with any watercraft, speedand operator body position and move-ment (body English), will determine thedegree and sharpness of the water-craft turn. Porpoising can be reduced oreliminated if the nozzle is downwardand speed is adjusted proportionately.

 WARNING

Shift lever should only be used whenthe engine is idling and watercraft iscompletely stopped. Do not use re-verse to stop the watercraft.

Steering

Turning the handlebar pivots the jetpump nozzle which controls the water-craft direction. Turning the handlebar tothe right will turn the watercraft to theright and inversely. The throttle shouldbe applied to turn the watercraft.

Unlike a car, a watercraft needs somethrottle to turn. Practice in a safe areaapplying the throttle and turning awayfrom an imaginary object. This is agood collision avoidance technique.

The watercraft behaves differently witha passenger and requires greater skill. The passenger should always grip theseat strap or grab handle. Reducespeed and avoid sharp turns. Avoidchoppy water conditions when carryinga passenger.

SPECIAL PROCEDURES

Monitoring SystemAll Models except DI Models

To assist you when using the water-craft, a system monitors some compo-nent of the watercraft and sends audi-ble signals through a beeper to informyou of a particular condition. Refer tothe TROUBLESHOOTING section forthe coded signals chart.

Limp Home ModeDI Models

Monitoring SystemTo assist you when using the water-craft, a system monitors the electroniccomponents of the fuel injection sys-tem and some components of theelectrical system. When a fault occurs,it sends visual messages through theinformation center and/or audible sig-nals through a beeper to inform you ofa particular condition. Refer to the IN-FORMATION CENTER for the displayedmessages and the TROUBLESHOOT-ING section for the beeper coded sig-nals chart.

Limp Home ModesBesides the signals as seen above, thesystem may automatically set defaultparameters to the MPEM to ensurethe adequate operation of the water-craft if a component of the fuel injec-tion system is not operating properly. Depending on the severity of the mal-function, the watercraft speed may bereduced and not allowed to reach itstop speed as usual. In this case, lettingthe engine returning at idle speed mayallow normal operation to come back. The engine RPM may be limited to idleif some critical components fail. In thiscase, removing and reinstalling thesafety lanyard on its post may allownormal operation to come back.

These performance-reduced modesallow the rider to go back home whichwould not be possible without this ad-vanced system. If this occurs, see anauthorized SEA-DOO dealer as soon aspossible for inspection.

Engine OverheatingAll Models

CAUTION: If the monitoring beepercontinuously sounds, stop engine im-mediately.Perform JET PUMP WATER INTAKEAND IMPELLER CLEANING proce-dure described in this section. When back to shore, flush cooling sys-tem, refer to POST-OPERATION CARE.If engine still overheats, refer to an au-thorized SEA-DOO dealer for servicing.

Jet Pump Water Intake and Impeller Cleaning

Weeds, shells or debris can get caughton the intake grate, drive shaft and/orimpeller. A clogged water intake maycause troubles such as:1. Cavitation: Engine speed is high but

watercraft moves slowly due to re-duced jet thrust, jet pump compo-nents may be damaged.

2. Overheating: Since the jet pumpoperation controls the flow of waterto cool the engine, a clogged intakewill cause the engine to overheatand damage engine internal compo-nents.

 WARNING

Keep away from intake grate whileengine is on. Items such as longhair, loose clothing or personal flo-tation device straps can becomeentangled in moving parts result-ing in severe injury or drowning.

A weed clogged area can be cleanedas follows:

In-Water CleaningRock the watercraft several times whilerepeatedly pressing engine start/stopbutton for short period without startingengine. Most of the time, this will re-move the blockage. Start engine andmake sure water flows out from bleedoutlet and watercraft operates properly. If system is still blocked, move the wa-tercraft out of the water and removeblockage manually. If the aforementioned method does notwork, the following can be performed:– With engine running and before ap-

plying throttle, put shift lever in re-verse position and vary throttle quick-ly several times.

– Repeat procedure if necessary.

On-Beach Water Cleaning

Maintenance, replacement, or repairof the emission control devices andsystems may be performed by anymarine SI (spark ignition) engine re-pair establishments or individual.

Engine Emissions InformationManufacturer’s ResponsibilityBeginning with 1999 model year en-gines, PWC manufacturers of marineengines must determine the exhaustemission levels for each engine horse-power family and certify these engineswith the United States of America En-vironmental Protection Agency (EPA).An emissions control information la-bel, showing emission levels and en-gine specifications, must be placed oneach vehicle at the time of manufacture.

Dealer’s ResponsibilityWhen performing service on all 1999and more recent SEA-DOO watercraftsthat carry an emissions control infor-mation label, adjustments must bekept within published factory specifi-cations.Replacement or repair of any emissionrelated component must be executedin a manner that maintains emissionlevels within the prescribed certifica-tion standards.Dealers are not to modify the enginein any manner that would alter thehorsepower or allow emission levelsto exceed their predetermined factoryspecifications.Exceptions include manufacturer’sprescribed changes, such as altitudeadjustments for example.

Owner ResponsibilityThe owner/operator is required to haveengine maintenance performed tomaintain emission levels within pre-scribed certification standards.

The owner/operator is not to, and shouldnot allow anyone to modify the enginein any manner that would alter thehorsepower or allow emissions levels toexceed their predetermined factoryspecifications.

EPA Emission RegulationsAll new 1999 and more recent SEA-DOOwatercraft manufactured by Bombardierare certified to the EPA as conformingto the requirements of the regulationsfor the control of air pollution from newwatercraft engines. This certification iscontingent on certain adjustments be-ing set to factory standards. For thisreason, the factory procedure for servic-ing the product must be strictly followedand, whenever practicable, returned tothe original intent of the design. The responsibilities listed above aregeneral and in no way a complete list-ing of the rules and regulations pertain-ing to the EPA requirements on ex-haust emissions for marine products. For more detailed information on thissubject, you may contact the followinglocations:

General• Only perform servicing procedures

which are detailed in this guide. Fur-ther assistance or information canbe obtained from your authorizedSea-Doo dealer. In many instancesproper tools and training is requiredfor certain servicing or repair proce-dures.

• Maintain the watercraft and equip-ment in top condition at all times. Ad-here to the prescribed maintenanceschedules. An annual inspection ofthe watercraft is always a good rec-ommendation that should be fol-lowed.

• Always use spark plug cable ground-ing device when removing sparkplugs.

• The bilge should be kept clean of oil, water or other foreign materials.

• Do not attempt to lift the watercraftwithout special equipment and train-ing.

• The engine and the correspondingcomponents identified in this guideshould not be utilized on product(s)other than for which they were de-signed. Maintenance procedures andspecified tightening torque should bestrictly adhered to. Never attempt re-pairs unless the appropriate tools areavailable. These watercrafts are de-signed with parts dimensioned inboth the metric and the imperial sys-tems. When replacing fasteners, make sure to use only those recom-mended by Bombardier. If required, contact your authorized Sea-Doodealer for further servicing informa-tion.

MAINTENANCE CHART

The maintenance is very important, if you are not familiar with safe service prac-tices and adjustment procedures, see your authorized SEA-DOO dealer.

Periodic InspectionRoutine maintenance is necessary for all mechanized products. A periodic inspec-tion contributes to the product’s life span. The following maintenance chart gives guidelines for regular watercraft servicingscheduled to be performed by you and/or by an authorized SEA-DOO dealer. Theschedule should be adjusted according to operating conditions and use.IMPORTANT: Schedule for watercraft rental operations or higher number of houruse, will require greater frequency of inspection and maintenance.

Antifreezing ProtectionNOTE: This procedure requires approxi-mately 2.5 L (2.6 U.S. qt.) (2.8 L (3 U.S.qt.) on XP DI models) of antifreeze. In cool regions where freezing pointmay be encountered, cooling systemshould be filled with an equal part ofwater and antifreeze solution.CAUTION: Antifreeze mix must befed in cooling system. Otherwiseremaining water will freeze. This op-eration requires a good technicalknowledge of the cooling systempath. If antifreezing is not performedadequately engine/exhaust systemmay freeze and cause severe enginedamage. We strongly recommendthis operation be performed by anauthorized SEA-DOO dealer.CAUTION: Always use ethylene gly-col antifreeze containing corrosioninhibitors specifically recommendedfor aluminum engines.NOTE: When available, it is recom-mended to use biodegradable anti-freeze compatible with internal com-bustion aluminum engines. This willcontribute to protect the environment.NOTE: The engine will not have to runduring this operation but should havebeen ran before, to exhaust as muchwater as possible, from cooling sys-tem components.NOTE: On some models, it may beeasier to reach hoses when you re-move the vent tube support.

TYPICAL1. Vent tube support

 WARNING

Always stop the engine before re-fueling. Fuel is flammable and ex-plosive under certain conditions.Always work in a well ventilated ar-ea. Do not smoke or allow openflames or sparks in the vicinity. Fueltank may be pressurized, turn capslowly when opening. Never usean open flame to check fuel level. When fueling, keep watercraft lev-el. Do not overfill or top off the fueltank and leave watercraft in thesun. As temperature increases, fuelexpands and might overflow. Al-ways wipe off any fuel spillagefrom the watercraft.
