Foreword

Reading the history of the “Mighty Marlins” reminds me of the many words

you could use to describe the club and its achievements. Among these are;

Fun and Fitness, a key focus of the club’s activities;

Recreation in all its forms that have ensured a happy club;

Interstate and International participation by club members who have kept the

“Mighty Marlins” name to the fore;

Endeavour and Enterprise which has shone through so many of the clubs ac-

tivities;

Notable Achievements, all of which this history records;

Development, which is highlighted by the club’s growth and development over

20 years, and of course.

Swimming which brought it all together in the Þ rst place.

But above all, on a closer reading of the club’s history the key word that shines

through 20 years of “Mighty Marlins”is friends.

No club, no matter how noble its purpose, will survive long if the members are

not friends or do not becomes friends.

Its been said many times that money cannot buy Good Health or Good Friends.

Melville AUSSI has for 20 years been doing just that: Helping members maintain

good health and building and developing friends.

As long as the club keeps this focus, then it won’t be long before we are celebrat-

ing many more milestones in the history of the “Mighty Marlins”.

Congratulation to all the friends who have created a club with a history to be

proud of.

Introduction

The AUSSI Masters’ motto is “Adult swimming for Þ tness, friendship and fun”. No-

where are these qualities better embodied than in Melville AUSSI Masters Swimming

Club. The history of the Þ rst 20 years of this Club from 1978 to 1998 is one of great

swimming success and of members and their friends having a good time. The Club today

is healthy, active both in and out of the water and for many of its members, a way of life.

In 1984 AUSSI Masters Swimming WA life member and Melville Club life member,

Fred Johnson almost single-handedly produced a book entitled the Þ rst seven years. This

chronicled the history of the Club during its Þ rst seven years and is the only published

history of an AUSSI Masters Swimming Club in WA. Fred was very keen as we entered

our 20th year to update the record and this book is due to the hard work of many mem-

bers. Fred, myself, Noela and Gordon Medcalf, John and Cath Devereaux, Sandra Swain,

Lorna Clark, Margaret Schulz, Tracey Altria, Robyn Knox, and especially Peter and

Rhonda Maloney. It has been a lot of work, deadlines that weren’t met, frenzied meetings

and discussions and tireless effort behind the scenes.

The book is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 covers the formative years and Chapter 2

the administrators who have served the Club so well over its 20 year history. Chapter 3

records the considerable success that the Club has enjoyed in its swimming program both

locally, nationally and even internationally. Chapter 4 proÞ les many of our members past

and present, some in their own words and some in words prepared for them, and Chapter

5 records the social activity – the “friendship and fun” - we have all enjoyed.

As we enter our 2lst year, I hope that you all enjoy reading this and it gives you the same

pleasure that it has given us in preparing it.

Melville AUSSI today is a well-established swimming club providing year round fun and Þ tness for adult swimmers. An active club with a wide range of swimming and social events, it has become one of the key clubs in the state branch. This state branch is part of a National Association that gives wide recognition to the achievements of adult swimmers.

Adult swimming clubs existed in Australia for many years before this national associa-tion formed. The strongest groups included the A.I.F. swimming association (42 clubs), and the Australian Winter Swimming As-sociation (22 clubs). Most of these clubs were male only and totally excluded women. These clubs did not give recognition to the Þ tness beneÞ ts to be gained from regular swimming. It also stopped swimming from gaining the image that cycling and running held overseas.

In 1975 a small group known as the Austra-lian Masters Association was reconstituted as the Australia wide A.U.S.S.I. (Australian Union of Senior Swimmers International). It was unlike other organisations and had as its slogan “Fitness and Fun”. A.U.S.S.I. was open to all men and women, and was modeled on the US Masters. Thus AUSSI Masters Swimming was born.

AUSSI Melville began the process of joining this organisation in January of 1978. The Þ rst AUSSI club in Western Australia, Carine AUSSI, had been formed in 1977. Some of its members were travelling long distances to attend and suggested forming a club in the Fremantle area. A group of sixteen people met informally at the Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday the 15th and decided to call the Þ rst ofÞ cial meeting for

11am Sunday the 22nd of January 1978.

At this meeting ofÞ cers for the

club were elected with Fred Johnson as president. The Melville pool was conÞ rmed as the venue and membership fees were set at $5 a family. Publicity for attracting new members was discussed and at the same time an upper limit of 50 members was set. Melville City Council were to be asked if the club could use their colours of turquoise and yellow. And a letter was to be sent to the National organisation with the news that AUSSI Melville was up and running.

The tradition of Thursday night as club swim night was set after the informal meet-ing. Those present agreed to swim together on the 19th of January at Melville pool. This was followed by the Þ rst ofÞ cial swim on January 26th. The program began at 7:00 pm and consisted of a 50 metre Freestyle, 50 me-tre Backstroke, and a 50 metre Breaststroke. The evening Þ nished with another event destined to become an institution, drinks and nibbles at the nearby Booragoon Hotel.

The Þ rst committee meeting was held on the 6th of February 1978 at the home of Fred and Nell Johnson in Como. Banking was ar-ranged through the Fremantle branch of the Bank of New South Wales. A press release with photos was discussed. Swim programs and recording systems were presented. And the acquisition of stopwatches was organ-ised. Future meetings were set for the Þ rst Monday of the month.

Ensuing months of swimming and com-mittee meetings developed the style of the Thursday night program, located winter swims at Kevin Duff’s indoor pool, moved the after swim events to the Plympton Hotel and increased the membership.

Club bathers were purchased.

A dinner dance was held and also a quiz night. By the time of the Annual General Meeting held on September 27, 1978 the membership was well over the Þ fty tar-geted.

In January 1980 the committee felt a con-stitution had become a necessity. Carine AUSSI’s constitution was amended to suit Melville and tabled to the committee by Robert Renting on the 23rd of July 1980. It was adopted by the club at a special General Meeting on the 4th of September 1980.

Incorporation was the last step in the for-mation of the club. After investigation by

President Fred Johnson and member Robyn Sargent, some changes were made to the constitution and Secretary Winsome Byrne carried out the necessary negotiations with the Commissioner for Corporate Affairs. The club was incorporated as AUSTRA-LIAN UNION OF SENIOR SWIMMERS IN-TERNATIONAL – MASTERS SWIMMING IN AUSTRALIA – MELVILLE CLUB on the 17th of December 1982.

On the 2nd of December 1994 the club changed it’s name to MELVILLE AUSSI MASTERS SWIMMING CLUB (INC).

Melville AUSSI Masters Swimming Club has been well served by its members in the many positions on the committee. OfÞ ce bearers for the Þ rst 20 years are shown in table 2.3. It can be seen that a Vice Presi-dent was not considered necessary until 1981, when the position was created, and Bryan Rodgers was elected. It is also note-worthy that the club had both men’s and women’s captains, following the old golf club model, until 1988. A search of club records indicates that our Þ rst Aerobics Coordinators were appointed in 1985, fol-lowed by the Þ rst Social Organiser in 1988, and Vice Captain in 1990.

It is of note in table 2.3 that a number of names appear again and again: Fred John-son, Lorna Clark (9 years as treasurer), Gor-don Medcalf (several capacities including 9 years as Þ tness director), the Devereauxs and the Maloneys. It is remarkable that of the eleven members who have served as President, seven are still active members. Both Fred Johnson and Bob Dunstan have served as Club and State President – Bob serving in both capacities in 1997.

The committee now meets, on average, ev-ery 6 weeks at different members’ homes. The Annual General Meeting is held in February in the Amenities room at the Melville Aquatic Centre.

CLUB FEESFees have always comprised a National component, plus a State component, with a few dollars added for the club. For example, in 1997, $16.50 went to the National body, $12.50 to the State Branch and the mem-bership fee was set at $40.00 with the club retaining $11.00. There were obviously fee increases between 1988 and 1992 but records could not be found. (See table 2.1)

The number of registered members in Melville AUSSI has gone from 68 in 1978, to a peak of 131 in 1981, and back to around 70 members in the 1990s. (See table 2.2). In 1981 there were only 11 AUSSI clubs in WA. By 1997 this number had grown to 31 clubs, which could help to explain the drop in our reg-istrations.

CHAPTER 3MELVILLE AUSSI – Members

The strength of Melville AUSSI’s continued existence as a successful club lies in the people who make the club. The contribu-tions from members, whether just attending, or swimming, or helping with the weekly tasks, working on the committee or helping with social and fundraising activities makes the club a great group to belong to.

In the following pages we cele-

lights of their AUSSI experience. Details for past members has come from records and memories. More detail on some early members can be found in the book covering the Þ rst 7 years. A list of all members and the year they joined can be found in the ap-pendix at the end of the book.
