• Strong SMT who are always approachable. • I have left Q17 blank as I am not convinced that the definition of ‘well led’ can be defined. • Some staff know my child, some don’t. • There has been a huge change in the workload from S3 to S4 which has impacted on my sons achievement. All

teachers are approachable and there are good resources available. • I would like to take the opportunity to thank my daughter’s teachers for all their hard work. • A lot of assignments are happening around the same time.............. we are in the process at looking at when

assignments are scheduled for and will be making every attempt to space out returns wherever possible, or at the very least have a calendar that shows when particular assignments are due.

• My daughter has had the same teacher in one subject for 3 years. Supported Study in certain subjects is needed. Apart from these points I believe Gryffe is a great school with high standards and dedicated staff. Many of my daughter’s teachers are excellent. Since completing the Parent Questionnaire Mrs Skillen has spoken to my husband and addressed the supported study issue in addition to other queries we had. Thank you for your prompt response to our concerns........ we try to contact any parent that raises a concern and always follow up on survey concerns.

McMillans – The Scottish International Double Act

Gryffe high school pupil Louise McMillan and former pupil Siobhan McMillan were selected for the starting lineup to represent the Scotland U20s in a development game against the full RAF ladies team. The match was played at Meggetland in Edinburgh in front of a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators who were rewarded with a fine display of flowing rugby. Scotland seized the initiative when Siobhan playing at 8 picked up from the scrum and powered through three opposition players to score within the first five minutes. Scotland's game plan and organisation proved to be too much for the RAF ladies and Scotland ran out comfortable winners at 32-7. Louise played at blindside, and as the main lineout jumper was instrumental in ensuring that the RAF did not get very much ball that they could do anything with. This is the first time two sisters have played in the same team for Scotland U20s, although both represented Scotland at U19 level whilst still pupils at Gryffe, they were never selected at the same time. Their next game will be played on the 1 March against the Czech Republic ladies team which should give them a taste of what is expected of them if they are to make the move up to the Scotland Ladies team.

House Week 11- 13 February The first event to kick off House Week was our House Karaoke competition. We had excellent contestants and it was a difficult job for the judges to pick a winner - our staff group singing 'Reach for the Stars' really did exceed all expectations! However the very deserving winner and representing Burns House was Courtney McHarg S1. Courtney's rendition of 'Let it Go' from Frozen brought tears to many eyes - what a voice! Miss Z Inglis PT Guidance Wallace House As part of the House Week competitions, staff represented all 4 Houses in a ‘Tug of War’ challenge on Thursday 12th February. Needless to say, there was a lot of face-pulling, feet stomping and sore throats from cheering... However, a big congratulations to the winners in WALLACE House who won, (not so) fair and square! Next year there will definitely be a weigh-in!! Whilst WALLACE staff maintained their pride and added to their House points, the rest of us earned some burns and blisters for our trouble... OUCH!!! Miss G Brand PT Guidance Burns House After the excitement of the House week Karaoke and Tug of War competitions, inter house rivalries had been rapidly growing and what better way to relieve this tension than the final competition taking the form of a boxing event? On the Nintendo Wii of course...... As the crowd assembled to the sound of the ‘Rocky’ theme tune, the first houses to lock horns were Fleming and Wallace. After a gruelling first two rounds, the third saw Wallace hit the canvas! (Not for the last time.....) This exciting bout set the tone for the rest of the event, with various S1 pupils representing their houses with increasing energy and determination. However, when all was said and done, the winner with two knockout victories was Mackintosh, followed by Burns and Fleming with one victory apiece with Wallace losing both bouts. This was another fun house week event which saw Gryffe pupils strive to win points for their respective houses. Well done to all involved! Mr J Clark PT Guidance Fleming House House colours non-uniform and whole school photo The culmination of House Week was Friday 13 February, with the first whole school photo for 3 years taking place. Pupils were asked to represent their house by wearing clothes of their house colours; Green for Burns, Yellow for Fleming, Blue for MacKintosh and Red for Wallace. Money raised from the non-uniform day will be put towards an end of year house prize. With pupils and staff ‘patriotically’ displaying their allegiance to their house, at the start of period 5 we all filed into the games hall for the photo. With everyone separated into their houses, approximately 1000 people smiled, cheered and grimaced to create the photo. This rounded off a very successful house week with many pupils and staff joining in with the activities that were on offer. 1.3 make a model Solar System

The science corridor has been brightened with the work of 1.3 who created a model Solar System as part of their Curriculum for Excellence ‘Science and Space’ topic. Here is what the pupils had to say about their work. ‘Our S1 class decided to make a scale model of the solar system for our course work. We selected planets and got to work. In groups we blew up balloons to an accurate scale for the planet and put paper mache over the balloons which took several days. After they had dried, we popped the balloons and painted the planets the correct colour. While the paint was drying we made posters on our planets which included basic information about the planets. Individually, we made letters which spelled out 'Our Solar System 1.3'. We stuck the title onto black sheeting along with the planets and the information sheets and displayed them on the wall. We all had lots of fun in the process.’ Sophie Dobbins and Jilly Harvie ‘We started this so that we could learn about different planets in a more interesting way. We made paper mache models of the planets then painted them. We then proceeded to produce a small poster for each planet containing information and stuck it onto a large black background and added stars. It took a few weeks to produce all the parts of the nearly finished poster. Each bit was then put together making the final product. It was moved piece by piece to the physics corridor where it is now displayed.’ Marc Sermanni and Ethan Clarke In addition, Thea Raeburn and Megan Hosie (both in 1.6) were so enthused by their Space topic that they made a lovely Sun cake and brought it in for Mrs Costello to share with the Science Teachers. Drama Trip To Kill a Mockingbird – By 1.9 and Mrs Davey

On Thursday 5 February all of S1 were given the treat of attending a drama trip to the Theatre Royal to see To Kill a Mockingbird. No one in our class had read the story before, so it was an exciting experience to find out what it was all about. The majority of our class enjoyed the play and some of our reasons were: ‘The play was very varied with lots going on on the stage, which kept it exciting’, Matthew ‘I liked it because it was factual but also fun to see in action.’ Rebecca ‘It was very emotional and funny’. Grace The story is set in Alabama during the time of segregation between black and white people. The main theme of the story was all about racism and how the people of the town reacted when a black man was accused of a crime against a white woman. The play followed the actions of the main characters Scout, the little girl who is the narrator of the story, her brother Jem and their lawyer father Atticus Finch. We saw the towns folks reaction to the alleged crime and the subsequent court trial. Atticus was the defence lawyer and it was very clear that he believed that the accused was innocent. The main outcome of the play was about justice, fairness and equality and even if the majority of people believe something, it is not necessarily the morally right thing – in this case: racism. Something that was really interesting about the play was how it was narrated and how the stage was used. All of the supporting cast members had the To Kill a Mockingbird books and they read these as the narrators of the play. These cast members also stayed on stage throughout – just changing costumes in front of us and moving the scenery around. We think this is quite unusual, but it worked really well and kept us intrigued. There was also a man who played guitar, ukulele and harmonica at different points in the play adding to the story and atmosphere. Someone in the class described the play as ‘powerful’ – we absolutely agree with this as the themes of racism and right and wrong were so important as part of the story. It made us think about what we would do if we were in such situations – especially as we have seen racist incidents reported in the news this week. Our final thoughts on the visit are that the play conveyed important messages which apply to the past, present and future and we hope that this is something that everyone will think about in their lives.

S2 Money Week Financial capability is an essential skill for all. S2 pupils spent the first week in February exploring money matters across the curriculum, from art auctions to budgeting to build a bridge to buying on credit. By considering songs, completing calculations and learning financial terms, the pupils had a chance to consider the effect that money has on the world around them from many different perspectives. One of the pupil favourites was studying the play "Skint" in English. The evaluations show that pupils had a great time and learned a lot with a true understanding of the purpose of the event. Pupils have been asked to discuss this week with their parents. Whether you are a "material girl" or feel "money can't buy me love" have a chat to discuss what they learned and how this can affect their future. Mrs Condy would welcome any feedback from parents.

We have opened a branch of Scotwest Credit Union in school where pupils can join and open a Moneywise savings account (more information on this can be found on the Scotwest website) and start saving. We are open for collection every Wednesday at lunchtime in ICT1. We would really like to encourage all pupils to save regularly. No matter how small the amount, saving is a great habit to start and will last a lifetime. Many S1 pupils have already joined through the Renfrewshire iSave scheme and S2 pupils have had a chance to complete an application form in ABC during Money Week. We are pleased to announce that all pupils can now join. So whether you are saving for activities week or prom, start saving today. Any pupil wishing to join can collect a form at lunchtime on Wednesday during collection; this must be signed by a parent before an account can be opened. The Scotwest website gives more information about the Moneywise accounts. Alternatively, Mrs Condy from the Maths department is happy to answer any questions. S1 Numeracy Club Numeracy is a skill that pupils need in many subjects and for their lives outside school. Everyone can improve their numeracy skills. The S1 Numeracy Club is open every Thursday at lunchtime in ICT 1 although it has been so busy we have had to use ICT 2 as well. Pupils have been playing individual games on the computers, playing in groups, team games and getting extra support with homework. Whatever your ability, the Numeracy Club can offer a challenge with a whole lot of fun thrown in. All S1 pupils are welcome. Mrs S. Condy Photographs – Rowan Seel S1

Barry Hutchison - Author Visit! Barry Hutchison is a Scottish author who came to talk to us (S1 pupils) about his books. He gave a very interesting performance and made us all laugh a lot! Barry has written many successful books including the Invisible Fiends series, The Book of Doom, The Thirteen Horseman and his newest book, The Shark-headed Bear Thing. The Invisible Fiends books are the first he ever wrote, and he wrote them because he is fascinated with the horror genre. He also writes comedy, comics and graphic novels. Barry is a talented, humorous and engaging author. I will definitely consider reading one of his books. Everyone had a spectacular day on Thursday. Especially Amy: Dear Mr Hutchison, I enjoyed your visit so much I am going home tonight to go and buy some books from your series, ‘The Invisible Fiends’. You gave me so much inspiration and I’m so proud that you, a Scottish writer, writes such great books. That’s one reason I’m proud to be Scottish! Thank you for sharing your childhood memories with us, it really enhanced the talk. I was so intrigued to find out why you decided to write in the horrors genre and now comics and graphic novels. Even though I’m a girl I found the way you talked about the books very fascinating and I cant’ wait to read one of your books. I am not normally into scary or horror books but the way you described the ‘Invisible Fiends’ made me start thinking I should try and read a few, as I have my own fears. You made me realised that I am not the only one with fears! Thank you for being such a great author and bringing joy (or should I say nightmares) to our minds. Keep doing what you are doing and I will remain one of your biggest fans, Amy Frew (Other Contributors: Lewis da Silva; Hannah Wilson) – All S1

Quality Meat Scotland visits HF&T classes Almost 120 S1 to S3 pupils enjoyed a demonstration from Quality Meat Scotland in Health and Food Technology. Here is what S2 pupil Charlotte Stuart had to say about it – ‘S2 had a special HFT class last week as they had a visit from representatives of ‘Quality Meat Scotland’. The guests told S2 about different logos you would find on food packaging and their importance. They then gave a demonstration on how to make a healthy burger, using meat which had been approved by the ‘Scottish Beef’ company. This meant that the cow it came from had been bred in Scotland all its life, which is great for our economy, and was free to roam as it pleased (free range). It also means it meets the standards that Scotland would expect to reach. It wasn’t just the chef doing all the work, as two pupils got stuck in, making coleslaw and helping to prepare the beef.’ Charlotte also took charge of the Media camera for the day – enjoy her photos! Debating News – Intermediate and Senior ‘Youth Speaks’ Semi Final Achievements

Congratulations to S1's Bethany McKay, S2's Bethany Craig and S3's Claire Cassidy (Intermediate) as well as S3's Skye MacDonald, Molly May Patterson and Amy McColl (Senior) who recently took part in the semi finals of the 2015 Rotary Club’s ‘Youth Speaks' competition at Intermediate and Senior levels. The girls competed alongside various Scottish school teams on the 1st and 15th February, respectively, and although they did not win, left with their heads held high due to the excellent delivery of two very impressive performances. Both teams chose to present on a closely linked topic and one which could be considered extremely apt in today’s technologically advancing climate: the negative impact of social media and technology on the younger generation. All of the girls should be extremely proud of themselves (in particular, the senior level team for being the youngest contenders) to have qualified to compete. We look forward to partaking in the next speaking/debating contests and securing future success! In the meantime we will continue to take advantage of every opportunity possible to work well with one another and hone our speaking skills to perfection! Article - Miss J Higgins/Mrs K Anderson

Mock Trials for S4

On Wednesday February, a group of Modern Studies pupils took part in the trial of Brian Brown (played by Katie Robinson). He was accused of stabbing James MacPherson (played by Euan Brown) and it was the job of Sheriff Alex Hood to direct the court and jury. Alex was assisted in this by Court Officer Lauren Todd and Fraser Campbell who was Clerk of Court. Brown was defended by Ben Couttie and Ciaran O’Brien who made a strong case and called in Rebecca Thomson as a key witness. Rebecca was cross examined by Fiscal Jack McInnes who called on Chloe Divers as his witness for the prosecution. After listening to the evidence the jury decided on a guilty verdict and Sheriff Alex sentenced Brian with a prison sentence.

Well done S4 and watch out Law Society of Scotland!

Pila Ski Trip 2015 On Saturday 7th February, sixteen pupils from Gryffe left the school for six days skiing in Pila, an idyllic ski resort in the Aosta Valley, Italy. With beautiful slopes and forest routes that cater for both beginners and more advanced skiers, the trip was an incredible experience which all the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. The weather was perfect with beautiful sunshine every day, allowing both the pupils and teachers to experience all aspects of the ski resort, from blue runs to the jump park to the amazing hot chocolate in the mountain café! The enjoyment of the week was completed by the humour of the Italian ski instructors, entertaining bus journeys and the night activities, which included bowling and a disco. Although exhausted by the end of the week, the pupils were all extremely sad to leave Pila behind and return home. We would all like to say a massive thank you to Mr Hannah, Mrs O’Neill and Ski Supreme for organising what we have all agreed was one of the best weeks of our lives, and all of the pupils are looking forward to (hopefully!) returning to Pila next year. S4 pupils enjoyed a unique learning experience when the UK’s first fully digital mobile campus came to Gryffe High. UWS commissioned the custom built vehicle equipped with cutting-edge technology - the internal specification of the bus includes satellite broadband, iPad wireless connectivity, BYODL connectivity and state-of-the-art 3D Occulus Rift and Google Glasses connectivity. Aidan Randtoul says – ‘Twelve people from our Computing class were invited to go down to the UWS bus which was full of fancy technology for us to try out. We met a man called Duncan who told us our task, to create a temperature sensor which sends the data to an internal network and then a website which collects that data and displays it. We were split into 3 groups, then given a workbook to follow. I was a little surprised, no help just a workbook and our minds. However, after an hour and a bit of problem solving and working as a team we finished. The experience was great - we learned how to work new computing equipment like the Rasperry Pi. We also learned what it would be like to work for a computing company by working on different tasks then coming together as a team. It was a truly great experience and taught me valuable teamworking and problem solving skills.’ Mr. S. Wilson Photographs – Charlotte Stuart S2

Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 At Gryffe High School we pride ourselves on our contributions that we make to Fairtrade, not just during Fairtrade Fortnight but throughout the year. 2015 is no different and we are excited to offer a range of events and activities during Fairtrade Fortnight to encourage our staff and pupils to fully participate in making conscious choices that can make a difference in the world. Since the first Fairtrade Fortnight in 1995, the Foundation have been educating the public on why to choose Fairtrade and increasing sales on Fairtrade terms for marginalised producers. Over the past 20 years the Fairtrade mark is now the biggest and best known ethical label in the UK. Fairtrade was launched this year at our monthly year-group assemblies, linking into our Rights Respecting Schools Award, with a focus on the Right: ‘You have the right to protection from work that harms you, and is bad for your health and education. If you work, you have the right to be safe and paid properly.’ Article 32, United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Our pupils learned that if a child is born in another country where they have to work on their family’s farm just to make enough to provide food, then it may be that this Right, which all children have, is not met. By thinking about how Fairtrade can make a difference to children and their families across the world, we are furthering our efforts to be effective global citizens. Fairtrade Fortnight has a key focus every year and this time it is on ‘core commodities’ such as sugar, cocoa and tea – products we all have in our cupboards at home and use almost every day. The price of raw cane sugar has been driven down by almost 30% in recent times by big brands such as soft drinks companies. This of course has a dramatic effect on the price that farmers are paid for their produce, and in many cases it does not give them enough money to feed, clothe and educate their children. As consumers, we can opt to make a difference by buying Fairtrade products. To promote the use of Fairtrade sugar, we are holding our Great Gryffe Fairtrade Bake Off on Friday 27th February. All pupils and staff have been asked to participate by bringing in sweet treats which will then be judged and sold throughout the day. We are also delighted to welcome Ismael – a Fairtrade honey producer from Guatemala, as our guest judge! He will be accompanied by other VIPs – members of our local community Fairtrade groups. We hope that everyone in the school gets involved this Fairtrade Fortnight in some of the events highlighted below:

• S1/2 Fairtrade wrapper competition – across the Fortnight, collection point in the library – prize for the person with the most wrappers!

• S1 Fairtrade trail – seek out the posters around the school and hand in entry forms by Wednesday 4 March – black tokens for all entries, and prize for the winner drawn from correct entries.

• Rainbow Turtle Chocolate stall – buy Fairtrade goodies on Tuesday and Thursdays at interval in the canteen

• Show your label day – Friday 27 February – wear an item of FT clothing with your uniform • Great Gryffe Bake Off – Friday 27 February • Smoothie stall – Friday 6 March at lunchtime in the canteen • Face painting – Friday 6 March at lunchtime in the canteen • Fairtrade banana splits – Friday 6 March at lunchtime in the canteen

Gryffe Great Fairtrade Bake Off Friday 27 February was a busy day marking the middle of Fairtrade Fortnight. The day started with a presentation in the theatre from visitor Ismael who is a Producer (of Honey) in Guatemala. Pupils and staff were encouraged to show off their Fairtrade label.

Mrs Davey and Miss Rowan organised the day which included a Great Fairtrade Bake Off. There was a competition for Pupils and Staff. The enthusiasm from both pupils and staff was amazing. Mr Gibb in Biology proved a Staff winner with his Lime and Courgette cake baked using Fairtrade sugar. Staff enjoyed this at the Big Brew at interval, along with a great range of baking from other staff, including a personalised entry from the ABC department. First year pupils responded really well to the Great Bake Off Opportunity. Four first year pupils Codi Carswell, Nicole Hagen, Hannah Brummitt and Thea Raeburn were winners with their superb cakes. Their cakes were so attractive that the pupils have been invited to Renfrewshire Council’s Big Brew event. Thank you to all who supported a great Fairtrade day!

Gryffe High Zumbathon

raises £537 for Teenage Cancer Trust

Charity On the 5th of February, Gryffe High School held a Zumbathon in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust – a Sixth years focussed charity. Posters and notices were put up both around the school and in the community to help spread the word. Wristbands and pin badges were sold at the entrance reminding everyone why they were there. Teachers, pupils, parents and even grandparents filtered through the door that evening with their water bottles at the ready, most not knowing what to expect. Although people stood arms width apart ready to begin they were still sceptical about whether Zumba was for them. Once the event had begun and the music boomed out of the speakers everyone exuded enthusiasm - including the football team! Despite the fact it may look stupid everybody feels as if they are on Strictly Come Dancing. Nobody worries about what they look like, everybody else looks just as silly and also have equally as much fun! The hour and a half flew in and before everyone knew it they were stretching off muscles they never thought it was possible to use. However, throughout the whole night the main focus was never drawn away from the fact that everyone was there raising money for one thing only. Everyone who took part and donated money to the charity helped us a raise an incredible £537.06! Donations are still being given too showing that awareness of this fantastic charity has been raised and hopefully will continue to help those who need it most. Thank you to Cheryl and to everyone who came along and gave their support. Article - Hannah Ross S6
