(1) Welcome

Greetings to our Band Family!

You have made the decision to become a member of the New Smyrna Beach High School Band. The NSBHS Band has had a long-standing reputation of excellence; a reputation that must be earned on a yearly basis. This position of excellence can only be maintained by the hard work and dedication of every band member. It’s your responsibility to conduct your activities in such a manner as to enhance this position of honor and prestige.

Our band is placed in the public schools, not only to give opportunities for future music educators, performers, composers, or arrangers, but also serves as a positive musical experience for our youth, regardless of intended career objectives. Besides the obvious musical values of band, the main goals strived for are character building, cooperation, loyalty, respect, dependability, responsibility, punctuality, and self-control. These are a few examples of the many rewards of being associated with one of the finest music programs in the state.

I realize that this has been an exceptionally difficult year regarding COVID-19 and it has affected us all in one way or another. This year it is especially important that good communication takes place, and I will do my very best to keep you informed of the latest news and calendar updates. My office will always be open to any parent or student who desires to communicate with me. I want to know how you feel, and hopefully I will be able to help. Please feel free to schedule a conference with me at a mutually convenient time. You can reach me at [email protected] or please leave a message at (386)424-2555 extension 38569.

Thank you for selecting the band program here at New Smyrna Beach High School. The band staff and I are very proud to be associated with you, and we are looking forward to a successful, fun-filled year of making music. Remember, music is a part of your life!

Musically Yours,

Dennis J. Scaccia

(1-3) Expectations*

The NSBHS Band has always sought discipline through individual responsibility. As a NSBHS band member you are a representative of your school, the band program, your community, your family and yourself. You are going to play an important role in keeping with the long-standing tradition of discipline through individual responsibility. With this in mind, and knowing that no one is perfect all the time, criteria has been set forth that all members of our band will be expected to follow. Each member shall:

1. Be in attendance at all rehearsals and performances!! Please visit our website atwww.nsbhsbarracudaband.com for up to date information and/or visit Charms (see section 9)

2. Be on time for all band activities. To be on time is to be late; to be early is to be on time.3. Be prepared for all aspects of the rehearsal. KNOW your music and have all necessary

equipment/accessories with you. Do your part and please do not waste time.4. Keep your instrument and/or equipment clean and in working order. You are responsible for

all repairs to your instrument. The instrument rental fee is $50.00 a semester and $100.00 per school year. Summer rental (June 1st – Band camp) is $25.00.

(2) BAND RULES

Please read and understand the following rules. Behind every successful organization lies a strong set of rules. Every band member must abide by these rules on a daily basis. Any circumstances not covered in this handbook will be dealt with at the discretion of the directors.

(2-1) All students and parents will read, understand, sign, notarize and return the required form(s) located at the end of this handbook. This handbook is based on many years of experience, and has been continually updated to conform to current school policies.

(2-2) All school owned instruments and auxiliary equipment carry a rental fee. This rental fee covers normal wear and tear of the instrument. All repair expenses beyond normal wear and tear will be the student’s/parent’s responsibility. An unpaid repair expense will be listed as an obligation and report cards and/or diploma will be withheld until the obligation is paid in full.

(2-3) All band members must maintain a 2.0 GPA (or higher) in order to participate in band performances. If your GPA falls below 2.0, you will have until the next grading period to bring your GPA up to the minimum 2.0 level if you complete the FSMA form. If you fail to bring your GPA up to the minimum you may continue to participate in class, but you may not perform with the band until you have met the GPA requirements.

(2-4) During rehearsals, all band members must stay quiet, be attentive, be in their assigned place, and have a pencil and music in their folders. All instruments will be stored in their assigned instrument lockers. Never chew gum in the band room, and put your cell phones on silent and hide them!

(2-5) No eating or drinking in the band room is allowed unless told otherwise by the director. (Exception: water)

(2-6) The band room must be kept clean at all times. Your books and personal items must be stored in designated areas during rehearsals. Your band lockers are NOT your permanent lockers-you must use your school lockers for everyday storage. NO FOOD IN BAND LOCKERS PLEASE!!! If you see something on the floor, pick it up and put it away.

(2-7) All band members must follow the instructions of the band officers. Do not argue with an officer. If you feel you have been dealt with unfairly, report it to the band captain immediately.

(2-8) When required to be in full uniform, wear the complete outfit, not just parts of it, and never run while in uniform (unless otherwise instructed by one of the directors).

(2-9) Public displays of affection and profanity will not be tolerated. (2-10) When applicable (Ex. away games, solo and ensemble, concert festival, etc.), all band members

must ride the bus to performances together. No excuses. Parents may pick up a student after the performance and/or when the game has ended.

(2-11) Take pride in your school. Respect others and do not deface school property. (2-12) If you wish to enter the director’s office or music library, please knock and wait for a response.

Do not walk in the office unless asked to do so. Remember, we want to talk to you, but many times the director will be holding conferences or performing administrative tasks.

(2-13) No horseplay of any kind will be tolerated; you could be injured, you may injure someone else or damage school owned equipment.

(2-14) Band members are generally the top students in the entire school. Our members will be expected to conduct themselves accordingly while attending all classes and functions at NSBHS.

(2-15) Infractions of any band rule will result in disciplinary action. Please refer to the Disciplinary Actions section 3-4 of this handbook.

(3) POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

(3-1) Attendance

Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is 100% required. Work is not (and never will be) an excuse. Excuses, no matter how good they are, will not produce a musical organization of which our school and community can be proud. (See all sections in Chapter 5).

(3-2) Bulletin Boards and Marker Boards

The bulletin boards and marker boards must be checked for notices on a daily basis. In addition to CHARMS* and email, these are the main methods of communication between directors and students. You will find printouts containing all of your band account information, rehearsal and performance information, and all sorts of information that you need to know. Do not tamper with any posted material; it is posted for a reason. If something is posted you are responsible for knowing it. *(Please refer to CHARMS section 9 located near the back of this manual.)

(3-3) Challenge System

You may only challenge the person directly ahead of you in rank for his or her chair. The date and selection of music will be chosen by the director. A re-challenge is allowed only with the permission of the director. The band director’s word is final.

(3-4) Disciplinary Actions

For all rules there must be a set of consequences. As stated earlier in this band manual, band members are usually the top students in the school, but at times even the best student can make a mistake. The following is the disciplinary procedure that will be followed for all students:

First Offense -----Verbal and/or five to ten jumping jacks in place Second Offense --Consequences (in this order):

1. "Circle" conference with the band officers.2. Mandatory conference with the band director.3. Sit out in uniform during next performance.4. Expulsion from band, and no refund of fees.

This procedure will be enforced all school year. It is hoped that this disciplinary procedure will never have to be used with a student, so it is very important that you understand the information given to you on this page. Band is a privilege, not a right.

PLEASE REFER TO THE NSBHS CODE OF CONDUCT FOR MORE INFORMATION.

(3-5) General Bus and Travel Procedures Remain seated at all times for safety. KEEP YOUR BUS CLEAN!!! Do not use excessively loud behavior; you must use headphones with your audio/video equipment, and drummers must ALWAYS use practice pads. NO PERFUME/COLOGNE PLEASE! Always be dressed appropriately upon arrival at the event. The bus captains will oversee travel procedures during a trip, including attendance. If your child needs to be picked up early from an event (see p.4 section 2-10), you must sign out with thebus captain and band director. Pay attention to the bus captains and chaperones; they make the bus ride comfortable and safe during trips. You are expected to behave appropriately in public during the entire trip. Order of dismissal is as follows: Director(s), chaperones, equipment crew, remaining officers, and then students.

(3-6) Instrument Storage

You must keep your instrument locked in your assigned locker whenever it is not in use. This is for your own protection. You must also keep your combination lock on your locker at all times. The equipment officer in charge of instrument storage will be locking locks at the end of each day. No food or drink is allowed in the instrument lockers (Except water bottles). KEEP THIS ROOM CLEAN!!! Neither the music directors or NSBHS is responsible for anything that is lost or stolen from the band lockers. You are responsible for all expenses regarding school owned instruments. This can range from a simple repair to the total cost of replacing the instrument (p.4 section 2-2).

(3-8) Marching Band Procedure

Before each HOME marching performance, a line-up and inspection will take place in the stands prior to the game. You will fall in place with your complete uniform and instrument or props. Attention will be given by the drum major, and the officers will begin taking roll and inspection will proceed. You will be inspected for a complete cleaned and pressed uniform, clean and working instrument, long black socks, clean shoes and shako, correct band shirt underneath the jacket, lyre and necessary music, water cooler, and proper military bearing and appearance. If you do not have a complete uniform and/or equipment at inspection you will lose 3rd quarter privileges for that game. You will receive a gig for every infraction thereafter. Your grade will be reduced by one letter for every 3 gigs received, with no possibility of making up the grade (please refer to section 5-2 for grade information).

Every marching practice will begin on the bandpractice field in a designated marching form, promptly at 4:00 pm. To be on time is to be late; to be early is to be on time! If a student has an employment conflict, he or she must have an agreement with the employer to endorse the NSBHS band program by permitting the student to participate in band functions. Additional rehearsals may be scheduled at the discretion of the director.

(3-11) Music and Music Library

The purpose of the music library is for storage and filing of music. Each student will be issued his or her own music. You must keep this music in your issued folder and your folder must be stored in its designated slot. Do not fold, spindle or mutilate this music. You will be issued a gig if you leave your music anywhere other than in the folder and stored in the music slot rack. At the end of each musical season, some music may be collected from you. If your music is in unacceptable condition, you will be charged for

it. Only the directors and librarians are allowed in the music library. If you need music, ask a librarian, not the director. The fee for replacement of lost or mutilated music can range from $1.00 to $100.00, depending on the type of music, and the availability of new arrangements of replacement music.

(4) BAND OFFICERS

(4-1) Officer Candidate School

One of the most prestigious and demanding jobs in the band program is that of an officer. The officer must follow all rules and regulations presented in this handbook and must also guide fellow band members in a student leadership role.

To become an officer, one must successfully complete the Officer Candidate School (OCS). OCS will be held in the spring semester of the school year. OCS is both a series of band events and special after school meetings that the student must attend to be considered for an officer position. The Officer Candidate will be put in various leadership roles during the OCS term, and will be evaluated on his/her performance. At the end of OCS, the directors will review all evaluations and select the officers for the following school year. OCS is offered to any student in the band program. Officers must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, as well as 1’s in conduct. (Please refer to section 3-4 and section 5 for additional information.)

(5) CONTRACT GRADING SYSTEM*

(5-1) What is a Contract Grading System? A contract grading system is when the student, parent and director follow a pre-defined system or “contract” for the evaluation of a student’s grade. Simply stated, it is a combination of points earned and a menu of items that can be chosen by the student.

(5-2) How it Works There are two parts to our contract grading system: the Core level and the Project level.

- The Core level represents the minimum amount of work the student is required to do tomaintain an average status in the band. This is divided into four parts, listed below:

Class participation 35% In-class performance evaluations 35% Director evaluations 15% Final exam 15% The students will earn an average status (C) based on the above core level requirements.

- The Project level represents the different projects a student can choose from to receive ahigher grade. The following list is a sample of project items that are listed on the band gradingcontract:

FBA All-State Auditions Perfect Attendance at Band Camp Audition in All-County Band Participate in District Solo/Ensemble Private lessons on your instrument 500 word report on an approved topic

To obtain a higher grade, the student must maintain his/her Core level status AND choose one item for a “B” or two items for an “A” from the Project level list. If a student has an excused absence or tardy from a performance or a rehearsal, he/she must make up the work by earning one point for each instance in order to meet the terms of the grade contract. If the student has an unexcused tardy or absence from a performance or from a rehearsal, or if the student has accumulated 3 or more GIGs*, his/her nine weeks grade will be lowered one letter grade (for each instance) without the possibility of make-up work. *GIG = the director can assign a GIG for the student’s lack of preparation and/or participation in his/herband activities. THIS IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH BEHAVIORAL GRADES.A GIG is only associated with the daily academic portion of the student’s overall experience in the bandprogram.

-A NEW CONTRACT MUST BE FILLED OUT FOR EACH NINE WEEKS GRADING PERIOD-GIGS ARE RESET TO ZERO AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH NINE WEEK PERIOD.

This grade contract system is a proven system that works. It gives students of all ability levels an equal opportunity to strive for excellence in our music program. Each student will have access his or her own personal file. It is located in the band room student file cabinet and is available for the student to check and update at any time.

*Midterm and final grades appear on Gradebook and represents the current grade status listed on theband contract. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILTY TO KEEP HIS OR HER GRADECONTRACT UP TO DATE!

(6, 6-1) BAND MEMBER AWARDS - How to earn Band Awards As a member of the NSBHS band program, you are expected to follow the procedures set forth in this manual at all times. There are many instances, however, that a student will rise to a higher level of performance and achievement. The NSBHS band awards are given each year to these hard-working band members. You do not have to be the best musician to receive an award at the band banquet, nor do you have to be the most popular person in the group. All you have to do is the very best you can.

(6-2) The Annual Awards Banquet Every spring the NSB Band Parents Association hosts the annual band awards banquet. During this time awards and medals are given to deserving members of the New Smyrna Beach High School Band. The following is a list of the various awards that can be earned in the band program:

(7) STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

(7-1) Fundraising The NSB high school music program has budgeted almost $60,000 for the 2020-21 school year to provide students and parents with positive, life changing experiences. This comes to an average amount of $822.00 per student. The good news is that we do not assess our students the full amount that is spent per student; our amazing New Smyrna Beach High School BPA helps to raise the remaining funds necessary. Students are assessed financial obligations in four main areas: Band Assessment, Instrument and Equipment Maintenance, Uniform, and “Fair-Share” Fundraising. A Brief description of each area and assessment amount is provided below.

Band Assessment: Student Band Assessment for the 2020-21 School year will be $400 dollars per student. This cost has remained the same for the past nine years. This year we are offering a $375 band fee option if you agree to pay in $37.50 a month for ten months on autopay. The assessment covers the cost of instruction by our nationally recognized staff members, transportation costs, uniform rental (described below), music, and miscellaneous cost that will come up throughout the year. There will be plenty of opportunities to fundraise to help with band assessment.

Instrument and Equipment Maintenance Assessment: Students are assessed $50 per semester for the use of school owned instruments and equipment. These include, but are not limited to students that are in the color guard, percussion section, and/or students that perform on a school owned instrument.

Uniform Assessment: The NSBHS music program will be assessing a portion of the band fees to go towards uniform upkeep. This includes dry cleaning, sewing, materials, etc.

Non-Fundraising Option: This option is for students who do not wish to participate in fundraising events. If you choose this option, you must pay an extra $200.00 (in addition to the $400.00 band fee) by December 2nd 2019. Please refer to section 1-3 paragraph 5 AND the financial form at the end of this manual.

IMPORTANT: Our BPA must follow the 501C non-profit guidelines mandated by the IRS. All money fundraised in excess of the total dollar amount of all band obligations (band fees, banquet tickets, instrument rental, etc.) must be put into the organizations general operating account. Please do not let costs be a factor in deciding to be a part of our nationally recognized New Smyrna Beach High School Band program. We have worked with many different family financial situations over the years and look forward to the opportunity to welcome you to our “musical family.” We are here to help!

(7-2) In-Service Hours

In-service hours are extra hours of service that you do. This can be in the form of staying after school for extra work, volunteer performances, NSBMS lesson night in the band room, additional fundraising, or cleaning. When any opportunity to receive hours is given, it will be announced during class, posted on the bulletin board, sent out in an email, and/or CHARMS account. Everyone will have an opportunity to earn in-service hours. These also count as community service hours that can be used towards Bright Futures and “Walking in White” at graduation.

14

New Smyrna Beach High School BARRACUDA Band Manual

(8) PARENT INVOLVEMENT

(8-1) Band Parents

All parents of students are expected to volunteer their services at some point in the year. The band always needs parents to help out as chaperones for events such as; setting up equipment before and after show performances, assisting at band camp, helping the set-up crew for the 5K “Run with the Band” event, our annual golf tournament, and others. There are monthly band parent meetings and all parents are strongly encouraged to attend. You can find out how you can be a part of our fantastic BPA (Band Parent Association) by checking out our website at www.nsbhsbarracudaband.com

You can also follow us on Twitter - @nsbhscudaband

Facebook - @NSBBarracudaBand

Instagram - @nsbhsbarracudaband

We cannot exist without your help and participation in our program. If every parent volunteers at just one event during the school year, then two amazing things happen: First, all band events are covered for the entire year! Second, our music program logs the most volunteer hours of any organization in the school. Which means, we qualify for National Blue-Ribbon school status, as well as having a strong voice regarding school issues. Please volunteer and support your child’s love of music.

(10) Uniform Care & Storing Procedures

Parents and Students – Uniform presentation and care is an important part of the Barracuda Marching and Concert Band program. The uniforms are fairly new, very expensive, and will last for many years if cared for properly. Each student will be fitted and assigned with marching band and some concert band attire. Students are responsible for taking care of his/her uniforms and accessories while on and off his/her body. Please treat them with care, respect, and Cuda pride. If any part of the uniform is ripped, loose, or in need of repairs, please notify the student uniform manager or the parent uniform coordinator immediately. Do not wait until performance time. The uniforms are checked periodically and are sent to the dry cleaners several times throughout the year for cleaning. Note from the Director – Any student that is not dressed correctly for a performance will be dealt with on a one-on-one basis. The consequence can range from getting a GIG to a letter grade drop for non-performance. This applies to all performances for any ensemble throughout the year. Thank you.

(10-2) Marching Band Uniforms Under uniforms are required before dressing in marching band uniforms: Band t-shirt (show shirt) Gym shorts Calf length black socks. NO ANKLE SOCKS ALLOWED!!! Dinkles (black marching band shoes) Also: NO JEWLERY – with the exception of ear studs. LONG HAIR must be put up into a bun or pulled back and secured with a hair tie. NO COLORING/DYES of hair when wearing marching band uniforms. Please do not dye your hair for Spirit/Game Days! The dye will ruin the uniform and you will be assessed a $500 obligation for partial uniform replacement. Students are highly advised to wear DEODORANT/ANTI-PERSPIRANT to avoid stains and odors that are transmitted onto the uniform jackets.

(10-3) How to Fold, Put Away, and Care for Marching Uniforms

1. Overalls/Bibs – Overalls/pants are hung first. Hold the pants at the bottom where the seams andpleats are lined up. The four seams should match up along with the pleats and hem. Place the pants onthe assigned hangers and pull the bottom parts so that the overall straps are even with the hem. DONOT FOLD THE OVERALLS. Place on wooden cart.2. Band Fees Payment Options Form

As you have read in the band manual, your band fees cover everything from transportation, school-owned instrument repair, sheet music and event registration fees to name just a few. Everything involved with our band program costs money, which is why the payment of these Band Fees is vital to our continued operation. Please understand that the school district provides a very small amount of money for the music department. Virtually our entire budget comes from band fees and fund raising efforts. The NSBBPA recognizes the difficulties sometimes created with participation in activities that involve financial obligations. We do not want any child to be denied participation in the band program due to financial difficulties. If financial difficulties arise, the NSBBPA, as well as the Band Director, will be happy to work with you to schedule payments that may better suit your family’s needs. Please choose one of the 5 payment options below: __PAY IN MONTHLY INSTALLMENTS. This option requires a payment of $37.50 PAID ON OR BEFORE the first Monday of each month for TEN (10) consecutive months beginning August 2020 and ending May 2021 resulting in at total band fee of $375.00. *$25.00 cheaper - NEW FOR 2020*

__PAY IN FULL AND NOT PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES. This option requires a payment of $400.00 by Friday, August 7th 2020 AND requires you to pay an additional $200 on or before Monday December 7TH 2020. If you have the money and you do not want your child to help the band fundraise, then you can pay an extra $200 so you and your child will not be required to fundraise for the general band program. REMEMBER – EVEN IF YOU PAY THE FULL AMOUNT OF BAND FEES, THE NSBBPA WILL STILL BE ASKING YOUR CHILD TO HELP WITH GROUP FUNDRAISERS FOR THE BAND. THIS IS WHAT IS KNOWN AS “FAIR-SHARE”. IF YOU AND YOUR CHILD WOULD RATHER NOT ASSIST WITH FUNDRAISING, THEN PLEASE CHECK THIS BOX AND PAY THE EXTRA “FAIR-SHARE” AMOUNT OF $200.00 BEFORE December 7TH 2020.

__ FUND RAISING(Recommended). This option allows you to earn money towards your band fees throughparticipation in specified fund raisers and/or volunteering. However, please note that the fees must be raised and/or paid in increments of $100.00 by the following dates:
