OUR CLUB
ManagerIt’s great to be finally here, the opening game of the season and with fans back in the ground!
After a really tough pre-season we look forward to welcoming Hyde United and I anticipate a really
tough game against a very well organised outfit that I think will be in play off contention this season.
Everything we have done during pre-season has been about preparing us for this afternoon and the
season ahead. And now we are ready to rumble!
As a professional fighter, I know the importance of bringing things to the boil at just the right time,
and that's what we have done with this group. With three points up for grabs, I am sure the lads will
take it up a level. We certainly aren't here to make up the numbers.
Winning games in pre-season is always nice, but it's not the be all and end all. Winning breeds
confidence – yes – but so too does building a competitive, together group that will compete for
everything. We have that here and that's exciting.
We are working with a smaller squad this season, where people will be given opportunities. Let's
hope these people take them and we can have a great season!
Welcome back everybody and hopefully we can get off to a positive start.
Respect everyone, fear no one.

OUR CLUB
CaptainGood afternoon! It's a very good afternoon in fact, as we finally get to start the new season – and we get to do that with our supporters inside the ground!
It has been a really strange pre-season for everybody. Starting the games with no supporters, then
finally getting the fans back in. Then with the will they/won't they be allowed when the league
starts officially.
Fortunately, we are now in the position where the league is upon us. Admittedly, I am not the
biggest fan of pre-season. Not really playing for anything, there's nothing I love more than
competing for points and being competitive. Now the season is here, we can start looking to get
points on the board.
As a group, we expect a lot of ourselves. We are quietly confident that we can be successful and
compete at the right end of the table. We have a good, honest bunch of lads and a good blend.
Some that are being given the opportunity to step up and play higher, others that are coming
down, but are determined to take Gainsborough Trinity back to where they have been before.
Personally, I am really looking forward to meeting you all and giving you lots to cheer, in what we
hope will be a successful season!
Stick together, through the highs and lows and let's hope there are plenty more highs.
Thanks,
Aingey

RICHARD KANE
IT'S JUST ABOUT PULLING TOGETHER LIKE WE'VE ALWAYS DONE. THAT'S THE
MOTTO OF THE CLUB – IN IT TOGETHER – , SO GET BEHIND US, SUPPORT THE CLUB,
SUPPORT THE NEW VENUE DOWN AT ROSES, AND SUPPORT THE BLUES CLUB.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
that the club is financially secure, so we can get through this season and look to build into next season and get our opportunity as and when it comes. So this year, good FA Cup run, top half of the table, see where we are at Christmas and, depending on where we are, could look at doing a little bit more financially to see where we can go.”
With regards to the size of the squad, that could be a source of concern for some supporters, Richard explained his and the managers’ reasoning behind keeping it on the thin side. He said: “We’re a bit weak on numbers and I think people can see that, but there is a reason
behind that.
“We’ve got seven on contract with the rest on non-contract, which gives us the flexibility to move players around as and when, and there will be an opportunity to bring in some young loan players from connections we’ve got with several clubs. As well as that, we’ve registered all of our under-21 players so you will be seeing some of them feature.”
So, Richard’s final summation?
“This season will be what it’ll be. So long as, come April, we’ve still got some money in the bank, we’re lucky the club is run in the black, it’s never in the red, and as long as we’re in the same position
ahead of next season then I’ve done my job, as long as we’re still in this league which I can't see any reason why we wouldn’t be with the squad we have.
“It’s just pulling together like we’ve always done. That’s the motto of the club so get behind us, support the club, support the new venue down at Roses and support the Blues Club.
“Just do what you can to get behind and support us.”
WITH RICHARD KANE ENTERING HIS SIXTH SEASON IN CHARGE OF THE FOOTBALL CLUB, WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE CHAIRMAN TO DISCUSS WHAT WILL CERTAINLY BE HIS MOST TESTING CAMPAIGN TO DATE.
By Rob Hughes & Cieran Curtis
THE BUILD-UP TO THE SEASON
“It’s been a long time, hasn’t it, since we last played a competitive game of football…”
Six months and nine days, to be exact.
Way back on March 10th, Gainsborough Trinity played out a 2-2 draw at Stafford Rangers in what transpired to be the Holy Blues’ final competitive fixture for over half a year.
However, this Saturday puts an end to that.
Trinity will be hosting Hyde United at the Northolme following one of the busiest summers off the field in unprecedented circumstances.
But just how did the Chairman steer the club into a position ready for Saturday’s curtain raiser?
“It’s been difficult”, explains Richard.
“You’ll see today, because we’re removing all of the boards of the non-sponsors for this season, which is down by at least 40% so you’ll probably see a different ground.
“We’ve not got a sponsor for the
Carlisle Street stand, apart from CHM, they’re staying, but the rest of them have gone. The gasworks stand has gone and at least 25% of the boards around the ground have gone as well.”
As you can imagine, such a cut to sponsorship revenue has therefore made it more challenging than usual for Richard to keep the club afloat, whilst assembling a squad for the manager that is capable of being competitive in the league.
“The balance is very tight, hence why we’ve had to cut costs accordingly and we won’t be throwing money about. We will just be looking to be as competitive as we possibly can with the money and the resources available to us”, Richard explained.
The importance of the fans can never be underestimated, particularly in non-league, however Richard outlines that, more than ever, the club will be leaning on its supporters for their help where possible.
“Yes, getting a season ticket will help make it easier for you to get into the ground with the social distancing requirements we’ve got in place, it will help with the gates, it will help with the track and trace also, but it obviously it is a help with regards to the revenue also.”
THE IMPORTANT BIT… FOOTBALL!
With such extraordinary circumstances reaping havoc
across all levels of football, it is inevitable that each club would similarly suffer the same economic consequences, however each would find unique solutions.
More than ever, it is incredibly difficult to predict how each team will cope once the season commences. Those who were previously high-flyers may now struggle, and vice versa.
So, according to the Chairman, where does that leave Trinity to stack up against the rest of the league?
“I don’t think we will have a terrible season, far from it”, Richard explains. “We’ve put our budget in, but there are teams who are still investing quite a lot of money, if that’s the right word to say, that is double or triple our budget.
“I have spoken to Curtis [Woodhouse] and we are looking to be a top half team this year, the team on paper that we’ve gone through does look competitive. Ultimately, you want to be in the mix, we need some excitement don’t we?
“I’m not writing off that we won’t be up there and in the mix, but for me, my purpose as Chairman of the football club is survival and making sure that we are still here this time next year, and are not spending more money than we’ve got and all of a sudden we’re down the plughole.
“The key for me is making sure

Hyde re-established in 1919 as Hyde United. In 1968 they, (with Trinity) were founder members of the Northern Premier, but in 1970 were relegated to the Cheshire Lge (and their rollercoaster ride began). In 1982 they were champions and gained promotion back into the NPL.
Hyde suffered relegation again in 2002/3 but bounced straight back as Div1 champions in 2003/4, then became Premier League winners in 2004/5.
In 2011/12 Hyde won promotion as Champions of the National League North, (Trinity were runners up to Nuneaton in the play-offs the same year). The stay in
the National League was short with quick relegations to the NPL Div1. Before regaining a place in the NPL in 2017/18 (with Trinity joining them after their first ever relegation from the National North).

he’d broken a mirror or run over a cat!! Manager Liam King follows up, questioning refereeing decisions leading to the two recent defeats. Both agree there are five cup finals to go and all to play for…

Trinity had drawn their first game away to newly promoted Whitley Bay and lost 0-6 to Wakefield & Emley. Despite the results, manager Gary Simpson praised his team’s effort, Lowe and Mallendar in particular.
In “League Press Release”, the previous season’s runners up to Witton, Stalybridge, had strengthened by signing Camden and Higginbotham. They had also spent £30,000 on ground improvements. Goole manager Terry Curran had also been recruiting, while Warrington had raided recently defunct Sth Liverpool for players. Fleetwood v Accrington was called off due to danger from building work at the Highbury ground.

Finally, here we are, 183 days since a cold, wet Tuesday night watching Gainsborough Trinity draw 2-2 with Stafford Rangers, the Holy Blues are back in competitive action once again and I have to admit I am more than a little excited as Hyde United visit the Martin &Co Arena this afternoon.
It is always too easy to read positives and negatives
into pre-season, yes on paper Trinity have suffered a
couple of thrashings to Rotherham and Cleethorpes
and yes, Trinity picked up a couple of good results
against Workington and Hull, but with so many
trialists, unlimited substitutions, some games without
a crowd… there really is no point in reading too much
into how the pre-season will affect the league season.
The only match I usually contradict what I have just
said is often the last friendly. Usually by then you
have a pretty good idea of what your team is going
to look like and how they will try and perform. The
problem that Gainsborough had was that when they
played Boston United last week they had a couple of
injuries and were still trying to add to the squad.
There were, however, a few positives that I felt the
Holy Blues' supporters could take from the match
with the Pilgrims last Saturday. The first being that
Tom Jackson was outstanding in goal, especially
in the first half when a stronger Boston team were
unfortunate not to go in at half time more than one
goal up. Some of his saves were brilliant, particularly
the save from a Boston free kick.
Another big positive I took from the game was the
fact that, despite in large patches being out played,
Trinity never gave up,
continued to fight for
every ball and in the
end, if it had not been
for an outstanding
save to deny Jack
Walters from Pilgrims'
'keeper Peter Crook,
then the score could
quite easily have been a draw.
This is always a good time of the season to have hope
and expectations going into a new campaign. So
what, in my opinion can Gainsborough Trinity fans
hope for the upcoming season? When times were
stopped for the national lockdown, the Holy Blues
were on a great run, Curtis Woodhouse has now built
his own squad and optimism should be high, if the
team can produce what they did during the great run
of the winter, then this season should be a good one,
who knows, promotion? play-off push? The highs
and lows start today!
I am at the game today and, as I said earlier, I am
excited. Last week I covered the Boston game for
BBC Radio Lincolnshire, but had to wear my neutral
hat. Today I am back in my Gainsborough Trinity hat,
last week was also great to see so many faces that I
have missed seeing since March, hoping to see some
more of you today!
Up the Blues and here's to a safe, successful season.
