"All of these extraordinary things did not just happen by mere chance. These accomplishments are all results of our constant ambition to do well, to pursue what we love, and to work as a team...all of these amazing accomplishments wouldn't have happened were it not for the outstanding people of the Class of 2016."

THANK YOU, CLASS OF 2016!

page | 16

You’ve probably heard her name by now. Her incredi-ble story has been featured all over local news and DB media. This 2016 graduate has a lot to be proud of, and we at Bishop DuBourg want to share her remark-able achievement once again, to let our community know just how extraordinary her story is! Emily just graduated in May as Valedictorian of her class. During

her senior year, she participated in four sports, was president of the National Honor Society, and was a member in the Academy of Advanced Studies and Pro Life Club. As if her school achieve-ments weren’t enough to brag about, next came the news of her college plans. During her junior year, Emily discovered the next path for her life – a military one. With a clear goal in mind, she got to work. Fast forward a year, and here we are – recognizing her for an achievement no one in Bishop DuBourg history has ever done before her. In fact, her accomplishment is extremely rare for anyone in the U.S. – getting accepted into not only one United States Military Academy, but THREE!

Emily’s path to the military started as a desire to give back. She knew she wanted to pursue a career that would allow her to help people. After attending an Air Force forum her junior year, she felt a Military Academy was the perfect fit. Emily then began tackling the strenuous and thorough application processes for her three Academies of choice – Army at West Point, Naval at Annapolis, and Air Force at Colorado Springs – which included academic tests, physical fitness tests, and recommendations and references all to be evaluated by the Department of Defense Review Board. Emily was also invited to participate in all three highly competi-tive Academy summer camps, of which she chose to attend two – Army and Air Force. (About 6,000 applicants compete for about 1,000 spots at these camps each year, and Emily was in-vited to all three!)

Emily earned Early Acceptance Letters of Assurance to all three Academies, a rare accomplishment she said she was not anticipating. “I was shocked and grateful. I wasn’t expecting to get accepted into any,” Emily recounted. Emily’s

family and friends are so proud of her success and all the attention she is getting from the media – and deservedly so! Because she earned Early Assurance, she was guaranteed acceptance into the Academies so long as she received a nomination to each Academy from a local Congressman or Senator. Congressman Lacy Clay, Missouri 1st District, nominated Emily for all three! On average, these three Academies have a combined acceptance rate of 12%. Emily’s appointment into all three is an astounding and excep-tional achievement! This meant all Emily had left to do now was choose which branch of the U.S. Military she felt was the best fit for her for the next four years. Emily said it was a tough decision because they are all great Academies, and she knew that is why she would be happy at any of them. After some thorough thought, Emily accepted her appointment to the Air Force Academy! At the conclusion of her appointment, she will be commissioned as an officer in the United States Air Force. Perhaps some influence to choose the Air Force over the others came from one of Emily’s most significant role models – Air Force Brigadier General, Jean-nie (Flynn) Leavitt (DB Class of 1985 and 2015 Bishop DuBourg Distinguished Alumni Award winner, first ever female fighter-pilot in the United States, and Assistant to the Secretary of Defense).

Emily gives immense credit to Bishop DuBourg for guiding and aiding her to achieve this incredible dream. She attests that her teachers were always there to help her whenever she needed it and were also accommodating to her busy extra-curricular schedule, offering to work with her before and after school on their own time. Their dedication is “why I got accepted into the Academies,” she said. Emily’s strong interest in science has inspired her career

goal to become a Geo-spatial Intelligence Officer. Emily, a four-sport athlete at DB (cross-country, basket-ball, dance team, and soccer) shared that she

feels being a student-athlete helped her learn to manage her time and strengthen her relationships, which will prepare her for mili-tary life and the 18-hour schedules she’ll undertake. She hopes to

“My reaction to the announcement about Emily was ‘That’s my girl!’ I was so proud; I told everyone I talked to. She is a fantastic student and so mature. I hope she comes back in uniform to talk to our students here – what a wonderful role model!” - Ms. Betty Hoeing, DB Science Teacher

continue her athletics at the AF Academy. All cadets are required to participate in intramural sports, but she also hopes to play on the soccer team.

Emily also recognizes the strong foundation she gained from her grade school, St. Gabriel the Archangel. (Emily’s sister Molly will be a sophomore at DB, and their four younger siblings, Shelby, Katie, Jeremy Jr., and Timmy all attend St. Gabriel.) When Emily was in eighth grade, she learned of Bishop DuBourg’s Academy of Advanced Studies – a rigorous academic program that challenges bright students with enriched classes and a more enhanced course load. She recognized the advantages of the Academy with the extra classes, summer courses, college credit options, and summer trips, and that’s what she says “really got me interested in DuBourg.” (She took the opportunity to give back to her grade school by doing her senior service project there this year.)

Emily’s strong foundation of faith was instilled by her parents’ commitment to their Catholic faith and education, and her time at St. Gabriel Grade School and Bishop DuBourg High School has encouraged her to maintain an optimistic outlook on life. Emily also strives to be a positive role model and leader. “I try to be Christ-like in everything I do,” she professed. Emily considers service to be extremely important, which is why she is not only committing to military service, but is why she has also remained so involved in the Christian service Bishop DuBourg encourages and provides. Emily is a member of the National Honor Society and the Pro-Life Club – two DB clubs heavily committed to service to others. She has also volun-teered her time as a coach for a youth soccer team. Emily connects her faith to her commitment to service and says joining the military is the “ulti-mate service to her country and God.”

Emily also attributes her success to her parents’ unwavering support. She said that although her mom, Stephanie, was hes-itant about her military path at first, she and her dad, Jeremy (DB Class of 1993), supported her every move. Her par-ents made sure she made it to her interviews and was staying on top of her grades, and gave her whatever she needed to accomplish her goals.

In addition to earning ac-ceptance into three Mil-itary Academies, Emily was also accepted into her three top college choic-

es, too – Saint Louis University, Rhodes College, and Mar-quette University! DB Principal, Dr. Bridget Timoney, spoke to Emily’s success. “This is an extraordinary accomplishment, but Emily is also an ordi-nary student in many ways.” Emily is very smart, well-liked by

her peers, athletic, involved in student activities – prac-tically your average DB student! “Our teachers val-ue students like Emily who challenge them to develop

their classes and improve their programs,” Dr. Timoney shared.

We at Bishop DuBourg are all so incredibly proud of Emily on her tremendous accomplishment! Congratulations to Emily and the Roeder family!

““

“Emily is that rare and unique kid that lives intentionally in everything she does. She gives everything she has regardless of the setting. Simply put, she is a blessing to everyone that knows her. Without a doubt, the best is yet to come.” - Ms. Mary Kay Brandt '03, Former DB Guidance Counselor & Basketball Coach

When asked by a TV reporter why she and the other seniors were building a house with Habitat for Humanity in Tupelo, MS, Hannah Moran ’16, responded promptly, “because ‘Faith in Christ, Service to Others’isourmottoatBishopDuBourg.” It came out of her mouth immediately, withoutmissing abeat.Ourmotto is instilled ineach and every student and staff member atBishop DuBourg, emphasizing the importance of this credo for our everyday lives. Hannah’s instinctive response to the question indicateshowpervasiveourmottois.

The students also had the opportunity to tour Tulane University.

This added a global dimension to our Lenten observance. They are also active in the Pro Life community bytraveling to the "March for Life" in Washington D.C. and locally outside of Planned Parenthood.

In our Religion classes and through our Prayer Days and Kairos Retreats, we invite our students to meet Jesus Christ through Scripture, the Sacraments, and in one another. GYM ROOF RENOVATION UPDATE

The gym roof replacement with the installation of new air conditioning is nearing completion. The Archdiocese of St. Louis chose C. Rallo Con-struction to be the general contractor of this complex job. The 656 skylight panels have been removed and a new Firestone leak proof mem-brane – with four 8’x8’ skylights in the center section – has been secured as our new gym roof. The two 20-ton air conditioning units have just been installed and the wiring for them has been completed. The job is winding down and should be finished, God willing, by Friday, August 12.

I am especially grateful to the Annual Catholic Appeal which contributed $300,000 as the cor-nerstone gift. Because of the generosity of many other donors towards the gym roof, we are able to use some of the ACA funds for other critical capital improvements such as two new air con-ditioning units for the cafeteria and the removal of asbestos throughout our steam pipe tunnels. I am personally grateful to Archbishop Carlson for directing ACA funds to DB.

Several alumni took leadership roles in this fund-raising effort: Steve Frank, ’66, Mike DiRaimondo, ’75, Mike and Joyce (Dohr) Bytnar, ’64, Rich, ’64, and Juli Niemann. Former President and DB fan extraordinaire, Tom Jokerst, contributed his considerable knowledge, expertise and enthusi-asm for this fundraising endeavor. Several other alumni gave generous gifts which you can see in the listing for the Raise the Gym Roof Campaign.

I am grateful, too, for the leadership and encour-agement of our Facilities Team including Mike Bytnar, ’64, Tim Dorsey, ’71, Tony Langhammer, ’69, Terry Hartz, Tom Richter of the Archdiocese, Tom Naber, Tom Turner, Joan Provaznik, and Bridget Timoney of our DB staff. The Facilities Team helped DB partner with Foresight Inc. who guided us with architectural renderings, cost es-timates, and oversight during the project itself.

From the President:

Thank You!"Raise the Gym Roof" Campaign Supporters:
