XILINX WebPack --Installing steps for USC Students (EE101/EE201L/EE560)

2 Download the software:

2.1 As of May 25, 2011, the latest version of Xilinx ISE software tool set is 13.1. ISE stands for Integrated Software Environment. ISE WebPACK is the free version of the ISE. We will install ISE WebPACk (or in short the WebPACK). We currently have WebPack 10.1.03i on OHE336/RTH105/RTH109/RTH115 PCs and also on SAL Computer room PCs. We will update the installation in this summer (Summer 2011).Students may go ahead and download the latest version of the tools on their PCs.

2.2 Make sure that you have about 16 GB space on your C:\ drive because the installation of this and other tools (including Chipscope and Modelsim) is huge.

2.3 Platform support: ISE does not support Mac OS. If you are Mac user, you may want to consider installing “Parallels” and run Windows OS so as to install and use this software. Otherwise you have to manage to finish your work on the university PCs in OHE336/RTH105/RTH109/RTH115 or in the SAL computer user room.Among the Windows OS, ISE 13.x supports XP and Windows 7. http://www.xilinx.com/ise/ossupport/index.htm www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/sw_manuals/xilinx13_1/irn.pdf

Select Design Tools Version 13.1 and click on

2.5 Login to your computer as "Administrator" to install the tools.

2.6 Depending on your internet connection speed downloading this huge 3.88GB could take 1 hour or more. If you have difficulty with your internet, request one of your friends to download it for you and give it to you on a DVD or a USB memory stick.

2.7 If you do not have a Xilinx account, create an account and then sign in.

2.8 Allow Xilinx to use their download manager to assist/supervise the downloading task. Since we are downloading a 3.88GB .tar file (a compressed file), which takes about an hour (for a downloading rate of about 1 MB/sec), it is best to have the download manager because even if we lose internet connection in between, we would not need to start all over.

2.9 After downloading the file, Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_13.1_O.40d.1.1.tar, extract files using an unzip utility on your computer (or the 7-zip utility from http://www.7-zip.org/). The extraction process creates a directory, Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_13.1_O.40d.1.1 . Once you finish extraction, you may want to delete the .tar file to save space on your hard disk.

2.10 If you have previous version of ISE installed, it is best to uninstall the previous versions.For example, I had ISE 12.4. Go to Start => All Programs => Xilinx ISE Design Suite 12.4 => Accessories => UninstallThis can take 40 minutes!

2.11 Open the root directory . Click on and it will gather your system info into .

2.12 My system is a 64-bit system. Extract of the xinfo.txt: There is a in . But I do not think we should be using that even if we have a 64-bit system. I did not use it. Finally, the tool figures out your system and if it is a 64-bit system, it runs an appropriate batch file before starting the tool. Following is an extract of the properties dialog box displayed when you right-click on the tool icon and select properties.

2.13 We assume that you are logged on to your computer as "Administrator".Go to the directory Xilinx_ISE_DS_Win_13.1_O.40d.1.1 (created in the above step).If you are on window XP machine, double-click on xsetup.exe to start the installation process. If you are on a Windows 7 machine, right-click on xsetup.exe and select

2.15 Accept by clicking next.Accept the two-part license agreement.



2.16 Select ISE Design Suite: Logic Edition, which includes chipscope.

Note that you need about 11715 MB hard disk space for this installation. EE201L and EE560 students will be provided with Chipscope Pro license details when needed.

2.19 Installation Options Summary screen: Press

2.20 Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistribution setupClick nextAccept the license agreement and click Install.Click Finish in the Setup Complete message.Click Next in the Welcome message screen.Agree to the license terms and click Install.

2.21The tool appears to be stuck here. May be the window about Cable Drivers is hidden. Say "yes" to "disconnect all Xilinx cables". And the tool will finish installation in a couple of minutes

2.22 While the above is going on, on the side you see the Xilinx License Configuration Manager window. Do not do anything there yet. We will deal with it later after completing the installation.

2.25 If you did not use program compatibility assistant on a Windows 7 PC in the beginning, you may get the following message.

2.26 Assuming that you followed the procedure and used program compatibility assistant, now you can go back to the "Test Compatibility Settings for the Program screen" and click Next.In the next screen, click on "Save these settings for this Program".In the next screen, either click on "Close the trouble shooter" or click on details and then Next, come back to this screen and then click on "Close the trouble shooter" .

2.30 In the next 3-part "Generate Node License" screen, press Next.

2.31 After reading this screen, close it by clicking the top right corner.

2.33 You will receive an email with the license file attached and Quick-Start License Installation Instructions.

2.36 Notice the appearance of the WebPACK in the list of licenses for software (S/W).

2.37 Press the button in the above screen to complete this part.Now installation and license acquiring tasks are complete.

2.38 Invoke the ISE Project Navigator by clicking on the desktop short-cut or by doingStart => All Programs => ISE Xilinx Design Suite 13.1 => ISE Design Tools => 64-bit Project Navigator (Note: I am running Window 7 Professional 64-bit)



Note: Since ISE is invoked through a batch file, the common procedure to run it in compatibility mode does not work.

3 Software Update

3.1 Now let us check for updates. In the ISE Project Navigator window, go to Help => Check for Updates.

3.2 Select the update in the upper pane.

3.16 In a few seconds the update finishes. Click in .

3.17 My past experience is that, once we apply an update, and then check (immediately or after a few days) for any new updates, the tool does not remind us of the updates that were previously (already) applied. On 6/29/2011, I checked for updates and it showed the above April 2011 update again along with another documentation update. I applied both (to be on the safe-side) and checked for update again and it showed again the same two updates. So, I used the button. After that, I checked again and it showed the "no updates message on the side.



3.18 The Documentation Navigator is a standalone application, probably not needed for students. I have installed it and I recommend that the TAs also install it.



4 Test your installation

4.1 Open a schematic example if you are a EE101/EE201L student.Say, the Bidirectional 4-bit Johnson Counter with Stop Control.

If you are a EE560 student, you may want to open a VHDL example design, say the Stopwatch Design.

4.2 EE101/EE201L students: Double-click on the schematic file to view the schematic. EE560 students: Double-click on the VHDL file of their project to view the same.

4.3 Pre-synthesis (behavioral) simulation and post synthesis (gate-level) simulation can be done using the Xilinx simulator ISim.

4.4 ISim window

5 Modelsim, Chipscope, etc.

5.1 At USC, we would like to use the more common and popular simulator, ModelSim from Mentor Graphics. So we need to indicate this preference to the ISE tool.

5.2 A separate guide is provided for running compxlib to make ISE13.1 to work with the free version of Modelsim PE Student Edition.

5.3 Chipscope: Your current installation includes the Chipscope Pro tool. EE201L and EE560 students will be provided separate instructions regarding licensing and using the Chipscope tool.
