BLUEBELL WALKSWith spring finally in the air, and the weather warming up, the Cotswold’s majesty is starting to shine through. One of the hidden beauties in the Cotswold’s is the stunning woodland walks. April and May are the ideal time to find these woods transformed with an endless carpet of stunning Violet-Blue bluebells. Bluebells scientific name is Hyacinthoides non-scripta and they are from the family Asparagaceae. Bluebells make the most of the early spring, before the trees are a full canopy and the warm spring sunshine can still reach the woodland floor. Millions of bulbs can grow close together, erupting in glorious colour, during April and lasting well into May. We are lucky in the UK, where half the world’s population of bluebells can be found. So we have compiled a list of the woods best known for their bluebell spectacle locally.

BLUEBELL WOOD WALKS• Foxholes Nature Reserve, Bruern, OX7 6QE. This reserve has a 1.75 mile wildlife walk marked with badger waymarkers• The Lynches Wood (Chipping Campden) • Littleworth Wood (National Trust, Snowshill, WR12 7JU) Pretty walk short enough to do with kids. • Bluebell Wood, Lower Oddington.• Hidcote wood, just outside Hidcote Manor, GL55 6LR.• Whichford Wood, CV36 5JP, connects via the Macmillan way to Long Compton woods and on to the Rollright Stones.• Annual bluebell walk at Whatcote, 7th May. CV36 5EF. For more information see the events pages.• Rotary annual bluebell walk, 17th May. For more information see the events pages.

The Bluebell WoodWe walked within an ancient woodBesides the Heart-of-England way

Where Oak and Beech and Hazel stood,Their leaves the pale shades of May.

By bole and bough, still black with rain,The sunlight filtered where it would

Across a glowing, radiant stain-We stood within a bluebell wood!

And stood and stood, both lost for words,As all around the woodland rangAnd echoed with the cries of birds

Who sang and sang and sang and sang…My mind has marked that afternoon

To hoard against life’s stone and sling;Should I go late, or I go soon,

The bluebells glow- the birds still sing.

Generation X perform 4 in 10 family travel searchesNew research has revealed how families are searching for holiday inspiration and services online. From econsultancy.comThe report shows how 59% of searches for family holidays are undertaken by women compared with 41% by men. Similarly, Generation X (those aged 35 - 59) perform 4 out of every 10 searches. Other highlights include how consumers are more likely to use mobile devices to search for inspiration and PCs or tablet devices to make a final reservation. Meanwhile, it appears that consumers dream of visiting the beach all year long - meaning that companies need to invest in year-round campaigns to capture this evergreen interest.

Nine in 10 consumers concerned about how companies use personal data

New research has found that while more consumers crave highly personalized customer service, they are also increasingly skeptical about how businesses collect and store personal data. From a study of more that 24,000 consumers, 80% like service that is personalized to their needs (which in turn relies on the use of customer data to deliver). However, 89% of consumers also want to know how companies keep their personal information secure, and 86% insist that they should know when their data is passed onto third parties.

“The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.” (Rita Mae Brown)

Tolkien’s Secret Shire in the Cotswolds

IT’S A BUSY time for Broadway author Steve Williams, who is about to release his second book, Wizardry in the Wolds. Steve, whose pen name is Steve Ponty (pictured below and opposite), has spent the last ten years researching the places that were an inspiration to Professor J. R. R. Tolkien in his much-loved books, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

TO STEVE’S ASTONISHMENT, he realised that not only could he identify the well-known towns, rivers

and mountains of Middle-earth with those of Mother-earth, but that the map of the Cotswolds was a reversal of the Middle-earth maps of the Shire.

His first book Magic Mirror Maps traces the journey of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, from Hobbiton to the Lonely Mountain. Many of the places along the way can be found right here in the Cotswolds across to Worcestershire and over the Welsh border all the way to North Wales. Steve’s journey in fact extends down into Continental Europe, through Northern France (via Cair Andros, Paris), over the Pyrenees (Ered Nimrais) and through Minas Tirith (Rome) onwards to Mordor . . .  where lie the shadows in Germany.

The Cotswold connections include Chipping Norton, (Hobbiton), the Rollright Stones, (The Barrow Downs),Moreton-

in-Marsh, (Bree), Meon Hill (Weathertop), Bredon Hill (The Trollshaws) and Great Malvern of the Malvern Hills very clearly marked as Rivendell, all of which feature in Professor Tolkien’s works. Thus we see the Malvern Hills as the Misty Mountains.

Tolkien followers will recall Archet (Chipping Camden), Combe (Blockley) and Staddle (Stow-on-the-Wold), of Bree-land. As Steve writes, ‘Bree-land is a group of four villages including Bree. There are Archet, Combe and Staddle on the edge of the Chetwood.’

BreelandHe goes on to say of Archet: ‘In fact ‘arched’ open windows imparts to the Author the pronunciation of ‘Archet’ envisioned by the Professor: not as we

were accustomed to say ‘Archette’, whisking us fleetingly to France; but just as in ‘arched window’: the archedness of the Market Place may well have been sufficient for the Professor in the designation of ‘Archet’, without reference to its shapely High Street.’

Of Combe, Steve tells us, ‘It is the essence of Combe that it nestles at the bottom of avalley: the name speaks for itself with equivalence in Anglo Saxon, but most readily for the Author for whom the ‘Cwm’of ‘valley’ is in the Welsh blood. The village of Blockley is our association here: for whilst in the days of the Professor, Blockley might well have occupied the valley bottom, it seems to have grown like Topsy, being all up and down each side of the surrounding hillsides; even the locals acknowledge that a trip through Blockley may be a bit of a roller coaster ride.’

Stow-on-the-Wold sits atop the surrounding hills and may be said to staddle them in the staddle stone sense. Given its exposed spot on the top of Stow Hill, the town is often referred to with the couplet ‘Stow on the Wold, where the winds blow cold and the cooks can’t roast their dinners’, but there is no source for this. It may be a corruption of the rhyme connected with Brill in Buckinghamshire, ‘At Brill on the Hill, The Wind blows shrill,

The cook no meat can dress, At Stow-in-the-Wold, The wind blows cold, I know no more than this.’

Moreton-in-Marsh is a certainty for Bree and houses ‘The Bell’ Inn which was frequented by Professor Tolkien on his

visits to his brother Hilary in nearby Evesham. The Bell fits very well Professor Tolkien’s description of The Prancing Pony,

where the Hobbits first meet Strider or Aragorn as he turns out to be.

From the text of The Lord of the Rings describing the curfew upon Bree-, ‘The gates were closed at nightfall; but just inside them were small lodges for the gatekeepers’. Moreton-in-Marsh is in history a curfew town and still retains its Curfew Tower. It emerges that Bree is at the intersection of the Great East Road and the Old North Road. Moreton is equally at a crossroads: that of the A44 running east to west, with the A429 flowing south to Cirencester, and northward to Warwick.

Finally, being in one sense a contrived wood, The Chetwood represents Batsford Arboretum (with all the Redesdale/Mitford connotations) whilst deep in Bourton Wood there lies the secret bog valley of the Midgewater Marshes.

Along the way Steve has researched the

myths, customs and folklore of the area, making for a very interesting read and giving us an insight as to why Professor Tolkien included various events in his books.

Steve’s second book, Wizardry in the Wolds is due to be released on e-book in the next few weeks, which is volume one in a trilogy, following the adventures of Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship on their adventures from Hobbiton to Rivendell, once again uncovering the hidden secrets within The Lord of the Rings. And as with Magic Mirror Maps, place names are not the only thing Steve has discovered. Steve, who is Welsh born as well as having studied languages, has found a lot of the script is built up from Welsh root words. Car-dol-an represents the Cotswolds, Rhud-aur the Golden Valley and with a build up from English, Steve takes For-nost to stand for Birmingham.

There is an intriguing section on the murder on Meon Hill that occurred in 1945 and Steve has also extensively researched witchcraft and old traditions which had an influence on J. R. R.Tolkien and his inspiration for the books.

Beyond BreeSteve’s journey continues from Meon Hill to Winchcombe, the site of The Last Bridge and onwards to the King and Queen Stones at Bredon Hill, the trolls Tom, Bert and William in The Hobbit. Thereafter he moves on to Upton-upon-Severn and finally to the Malvern Hills. Steve’s two friends Gollum and Smeagol, accompany him along the way adding humour and commentary.

The books are not only exciting for any J. R. R.Tolkien fan but would also appeal to anyone with a love of the Cotswolds wishing to have a greater knowledge of the area.

‘You’ll discover more about the Cotswolds and their history than you ever knew before,’ promises Steve. ‘I’m having the time of my life on this journey and who knows where the trail may end?’

SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

Let’s start with our very important younger readers. Remember Code Name Verity, a World War Two adventure story, a few years ago? The author has a new book, The Pearl Thief, a mystery with all the suspense of an Agatha Christie and the intrigue of Downton Abbey! Alternative teenage reads are the latest instalments in the Bodyguard and Young Bond series by Chris Bradford and Steve Cole respectively. If you’re a bit younger, you might enjoy Moonlocket by Peter Bunzl, the second Cogheart adventure, a thrilling tale of catastrophe and courage, or there’s a new Tom Gates story from Liz Pichon. Younger still? How about the new Rick Riordan and the second in his new series The Trials of Apollo? Called The Dark Prophecy, it finds Apollo facing the greatest challenge of his 4,000 years of existence! Jacqueline Wilson has her first WWII story, Wave Me Goodbye, about evacuees. And of course, we have our usual selection of charming and funny picture storybooks, including a new Shirley Hughes about Alfie and Dad, just in time for Father’s Day.

Lots of adult titles to choose from! As highlighted above, there’s Lucy Worsley’s contribution to the Jane Austen bicentenary year, a follow-up from Henry Marsh to his bestselling Do No Harm, and the life of Barack Obama before the Presidency. You have probably been on Mars if you don’t know that Paula Hawkins, author of the phenomenally successful The Girl on the Train, has a new thriller, Into the Water. Elizabeth Strout, author of My Name is Lucy Barton, also has a new novel, Anything is Possible, whilst the new Tracy Chevalier, New Boy, a retelling of Othello, is a great read. Tatiana de Rosnay has a biography of Daphne du Maurier, and there is also a portrait of Michael Kidson, a former Eton schoolmaster. Finally, Andrew Froggatt tells you how to bring out the very best in your horses in The Horse Whisperer.

Gloucestershire ConstabularyImmediately following the terrorist incident outside the Houses of Parliament, Gloucestershire Constabulary worked with police colleagues and partners to fully establish the situation in Gloucestershire and the potential threat to the people who live, work or visit here.

Chief Superintendent Jo Smallwood is leading the force’s response and says people shouldn’t worry: “Firstly, I want to reassure anyone living, working or visiting Gloucestershire that the national threat level has not changed and we haven’t identified any threats in the county relating to the incident in London.

“However, we appreciate many people will be concerned by events and we are working with our partners to offer reassurance and support to ensure we all feel safe. This includes monitoring any potential community tensions or any increase in reported hate crimes. I ask if you are concerned about something that you contact us on 101 or via the [email protected] email.”

Council awards discretionary rate relief to sixty-five community halls

Release date: 22 March 2017

Cotswold District Council has announced that sixty-five village and community halls, and village shops will be exempted from rates until at least 31 March 2020. This will save them collectively a further £20,100 on top of the mandatory relief which has already been granted previously.

The Leader of CDC, Cllr Lynden Stowe has determined sixty-five renewal applications for discretionary rate relief for village halls across many parts of the Cotswolds:

Commenting on the decision, Cllr Stowe said: “It’s very important that the Council continues to provide rate relief to non-profit making assets such as village halls. These premises contribute to the rich tapestry of life in our District by providing a vast range of activities for young and old, and are essential for maintaining thriving communities.”

If any person responsible for a village hall has not applied for this discretionary rate relief so far, please call the Council on 01285 623000 as soon as possible.

Multi Use Games Area

A Statement from Moreton in Marsh Town Council (M.T.C.)

As part of an approval to build additional homes at Moreton Park, Cala Homes Ltd. provided a sum of money to build another Multi Use Games Area for the benefit of Moreton residents. This money is held by Cotswold District Council as the Planning Authority pending applications by M.T.C. for release as the games area is developed. M.T.C. considered a field adjacent to the Moreton Rangers Football Club to be the most suitable location and discussions have been held with Gloucestershire County Council (G.C.C.) Highways Department to provide a crossing point on the A44 by the football ground and with the Fields in Trust who own the land concerned. We can now confirm that G.C.C. contractors have commenced work on the A44 crossing and this is scheduled for completion by the end of April. Negotiations with Fields in Trust are ongoing: There are still several issues to resolve before we can proceed with further decisions regarding the detail of the games area and we shall attempt to find a solution to these issues as soon as possible. Concurrently we have received quotes from a number of companies who would provide the required groundwork and games equipment. These will be analysed shortly and recommendations made as soon as the matters outlined above are dealt with. M.T.C. is proceeding as quickly as possible to provide an appropriate facility for all residents: however, legal, financial and contractual matters take time to sort out and we will be cautious rather than hasty in determining the best solutions. We will update this information due course.

Get ready for The Great Get Together!

Cotswold District Council is alert-ing residents that The Great Get Together will be taking place across the country over the week-end of 17 and 18 June.

The ‘Big Lunch’, Jo Cox Foun-dation and dozens of other groups have joined forces to invite people to come together with friends, neighbours and others they don’t yet know for street parties, picnics, barbecues, bake-off competitions and other events. It fol-lows the first anniversary of the murder of MP Jo Cox on 16 June last year.

CDC is keen to help facilitate street parties and other com-munity events organised by residents. This could involve, for example, an organised event in a market place, leisure centre or other community building. The Council will be notifying town and parish council organisations across the District, encouraging them to promote events in church or parish halls.

The Government’s guidance on holding street parties contains a straightforward two page form for residents wishing to hold this sort of event: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/your-guide-to-organising-a-street-party.

People will be able to sign up to host a Great Get Together event or find out what is happening in their area by going to the www.greatgettogether.org website.

RURAL communities must not be sidelined by politicians standing in the general election

Written for the Rural Services Network by Rurality Media

RSN chief executive Graham Biggs said: “The Prime Minister called this general election to strengthen the UK’s hand during Brexit negotiations.”

“Given the amount of support it receives from Brussels, the rural sector will be among those most affected by the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

“In seeking to be elected or re-elected to parliament, it is vital that politicians remember the needs of our rural communities – and we will be fighting to ensure the rural voice is heard.”

Other leaders representing rural communities have also spoken out ahead of the election.

They include Helen Woolley, director general of the Country, Land and Business Association.

She said: “We welcome the opportunity to get out and engage with candidates about the future of the countryside and ensure the rural voice is heard.

“The CLA will work throughout the campaign to ensure MPs understand that the future of the rural economy must be a national priority through Brexit and beyond.”

National Farmers’ Union president Meurig Raymond said agriculture was arguably the sector that would be most impacted by Brexit.

NFU members would want to understand how each of the political parties planned to support profitable, productive and progressive agriculture and horticulture in the future, he said.

“The right post-Brexit trade deal is absolutely critical but equally well so is a new wider policy framework that better delivers for farming and the nation.

“Throughout the next seven weeks the NFU will ensure that all parties fully understand and engage with the food and farming community on the issues facing the sector both now and post-Brexit.

British farms produced the raw ingredients for the UK food and drink manufacturing sector which was worth £108bn and the public wanted to buy British food, said Mr Raymond.

“For that to happen it is vital that candidates recognise the enormous contribution that agriculture makes, said Mr Raymond.

For every £1 invested in agriculture, the NFU says farming delivers £7.40 back in returns to the national economy.

Is there a lack of democracy in local planning? The National Trust and Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) has published evidence which points to a lack of local democracy in the English planning system.

In a ‘pilot’ survey of 1,200 ward councillors across England, 72% of councillors said that the system is too weighted in favour of developers at the expense of local communities.

Other key findings are:

• 50% of councillors say sites that are not in line with the local plan are being approved for new housing

• 50% of councillors believe planning departments are not adequately resourced

• 58% of councillors with Green Belt area think that their council will allocate Green Belt land for housing in the next five years.

Also, the National Planning Policy

Framework (NPPF) does not appear to be having the positive impact it was intended to have on design quality – with only 18% of councillors feeling design has improved since the NPPF was drawn up, and only 12% of councillors think that the loosening of planning restrictions has had a positive effect.

Councillors all expressed concerns that the new Housing White Paper could make matters worse, as rigid housing numbers for local plans don’t take account of local factors such as Green Belt and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There is a need for Ministers to take a number of sensible steps to improve the confidence that councillors have in the way the planning system works, including:

• More resources for Local Planning Authorities to help get local plans in place

•  Stronger Government backing for councils setting design standards

•  A smart approach to meeting housing need which allows councils to recognise local constraints and focuses development in the most appropriate place

Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive of the LGiU, said:

The planning system is one of the fundamental pillars of local democracy, allowing communities to help shape the physical structure of the places they live.

Councillors are the most important link between communities and that system. Our survey with the National Trust shows that many councillors feel that this democratic tool is at risk of being undermined.

Tesco Collections

A big “thank you” to everyone who donated food and money at the Tesco Neighbourhood Food Collection in Stow-on-the-Wold last December. We raised £1,300 in financial donations and 870kg of food. Tesco tops up the food donations by an equivalent 20% in cash. Many of the items donated, such as mince pies and Christmas cakes, are used to make up Christmas hampers which are distributed to everyone with a voucher attending our centres during the last two weeks of December. For families already managing tight budgets, winter is often the hardest time of year.

Every December, we meet people

who have been hit by something unavoidable, like redundancy or illness, and are facing Christmas unable to afford food. Since the Neighbourhood Food Collection was launched in 2012, the equivalent of more than forty-three million meals have been donated by Tesco customers around the country. As well as the Neighbourhood Food Collections, don’t forget you can also donate at the permanent collection points in Tesco stores and Tesco top these up by 20% for us, too: we received £170 from the permanent collection points between March and the end of June 2016.

Store openingPlease note that the Guiting Power store is only open on Tuesdays, from 10-12, for donations of food only.

Former WRAF Member on Cloud Nine Thanks to Bovis Homes

THE RE-DEVELOPMENT of the former RAF base at Upper

Rissington by Bovis Homes has put Gloucester mum Cecilia Collier on cloud nine – after a chance conversation with her designer son.

Her son, Rich Devine, a 3D Visualiser at Bovis Homes’ Graphic Design Department mentioned to his mum how he was helping prepare a brochure for the Officers’ Collection of new Bovis Homes at Upper Rissington, a former RAF base in the Cotswolds.

She then dropped the bombshell – that she was a respected member of the Women’s Royal Air Force working at that very same air base nearly fity years ago!

Little RissingtonCecilia, 69, of Churchdown, Gloucestershire, was stationed at RAF Little Rissington for a year from 1967-1968 and knew the Officers’ Mess , Building 42, the Medical Centre, and regularly popped into Building 41, Station Headquarters.

Now, 49 years on, Rich, 40, from Cheltenham, is using 3D computer graphics to show customers how each of those buildings will look after being redesigned and built into an array of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom houses and apartments.

Rich said: “It was just a chance conversation. I mentioned I was working on visuals for a new development at the old RAF base at Little Rissington and my mum’s ears pricked up. It then all came pouring out!

“I had no idea she was stationed there and it turns out she actually

used many of the old RAF buildings we are now redeveloping. I am now working on 3D visuals of the HQ building where she

picked up her pay each week and the Officers’ Mess where she ran errands and did bar work at Officers’ functions. It’s quite amazing. I couldn’t believe it”

VIP VisitWhen Bovis Homes heard of Rich’s family connection they organised a VIP visit for Cecilia to the Victory Fields development and a guided tour of the Officers’ Collection of former RAF buildings now under construction by specialist sub-contractors Speller Metcalfe.

Cecilia, a Senior Aircraftwoman specialising in Air Radar Mechanics, was one of just 20 WRAFs at the base. She was literally on cloud nine as she toured the site and recalled unofficially learning to fly Jet Provosts, socialising in the NAAFI

cafe and watching films at the base’s Astra cinema.

She remembered lining up outside the former HQ building each week and giving a smart salute followed by her name, rank and number to collect her pay. “It wasn’t very much, but it was all pocket money as our accommodation and uniforms were free. Quite honestly, there was nothing much extra to buy in those days anyway!”

Central Flying SchoolCecilia said: “This was the RAF’s Central Flying School and there were planes taking off and landing here every day, it was a busy base. When I arrived my job was to remove any radar in the planes that were faulty and take them to ‘second line’ for repair. Soon after I was put on ‘first line’ duties which meant I was part of the team that would do all of the aircraft checks from the cockpit down, before take-off and after landing including marshalling in and re-fuelling.

“I was in my element and loved it here. It’s fascinating to see it now. Some of the buildings have gone, but the control tower, the guard room and many others are still here and are being saved and converted into new housing by Bovis Homes.

“It’s good to know the RAF’s heritage is being maintained and the road names and local facilities reflect RAF life back in those days. It’s already turning into a lovely development and I am so thrilled to have had this opportunity to go down memory lane and see this exciting transformation. It is breathing new life back into a redundant site which can only be a good thing.”

Where are people going to park? Letter from Andy Burrows to Kevin Perks, Senior Planning Officer at Cotswold District Council (26 March) and copied into [email protected]

Dear Mr PerksI live on Hospital Road, Moreton in Marsh and opposite the new Keatley Place (12/02678/FUL) building development . . . allowed after much consideration by the Planning Department, no doubt. The development comprises thirty-four units designed for over sixties residents. There are thirteen allocated parking spaces for the development and three reserved for visitors of the complex. It was with great interest and of no surprise to learn that thirteen units have been sold as of 25/3/17 and thirteen parking spaces have also been sold . . .To be clear . . . the remaining twenty-one units need to be sold and there is not a single parking space available for the remaining residences. Can you please tell me on behalf of the Planning Departments where these people are going to park and also where would you like me to park? If you are not the right person to ask then please pass this mail onto the appropriate person. Please let me remind you that GCC is well aware of the wide parking problem in Moreton in Marsh and I include a website link to the GCC website to remind you. This is not new news and is 2 years old.https://gloucestershire.objective.co.uk/portal/trp/parking/moreton-in-marsh_parking_survey

Town And Country Planning Act 1990 – Highway RecommendationsLocation : Former Moreton Bowls Club, Hospital Road, Moreton in MarshProposal : Demolition of existing building and erection of private sheltered accommodation (34 units) for the elderly (Category II type accommodation), communal facilities, landscaping and car parking

Best regards,Andy Burrows, Hospital Road, Moreton in Marsh

Response Letter from Kevin Perks to Andy Burrows (28 March) who forwarded a copy to Cotswold Times.

Dear Mr Burrows,

Thank you for your email.

The McCarthy and Stone development is an age-restricted scheme whereby future occupants will have to be over sixty years old. On average residents in McCarthy and Stone developments are typically in their mid seventies. Car ownership for such development is therefore lower than average. In addition, the site lies in close proximity to the town centre thereby further reducing the need for future residents to own a car.

http://www.cotswold.gov.uk/residents/planning-building/planning/customer-feedback/

The approved scheme made provision for 15 car parking spaces. This has subsequently been amended to 16 spaces. The parking requirements for a scheme of this size would be 13.4 spaces. The development is therefore providing more parking than required. For information I have attached a copy of GCC Highways comments on the original application.

I trust this information is of assistance

Regards Martin Perks, Senior Planning Officer

Andy Burrows comment to Cotswold Times - Please see a stock answer (and attachment) from the planning department which does not answer my question at all. Further the content isn't meaningful. I will be making a considered response based on data.

Editor’s comment:Good Luck Andy – it is interesting how frequently the developers ‘get away’ without observing the planning considerations imposed on them.

One of the most common causes of complaint we hear about at the gym is backpain - it can be extremely debilitating, causing chronic tiredness, depression andirritability. Your back is a complex structure made up of bones, muscles, nerves andjoints, which can make it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the pain. In mostcases it is not serious damage but small muscle strains, sprains or pinched nerves –even so, these can be very unpleasant and the longer these small injuries are leftuntreated, the more likelihood there is of developing a chronic back problem.

Here are some of the most common causes and what you can do to help;

1. Commuting and Computing; your back is compressed when you sit for too longso try to move as much as possible during the day, and align your spine properlywhen sitting.

2. Overdoing it at the weekend; gardening or a game of tennis when your body isn’tprepared are two common culprits. The only preventative solution here is exercise.

3. Absentmindedness; picking something up from the floor, loading the dishwasher– it’s always the simplest of things. Prevent this by teaching your body to engage itscore muscles properly .

If you do find yourself suffering, the first step is to get things checked by aprofessional to rule out any serious damage. After that, a programme of stretching, strengthening and back maintenance can work wonders for long term relief. THEWORST THING you can do is NOTHING!

This month we’d like to look at why we should all take a step back and look at just how healthy we really are, and why it is so important. We’d like you to ask yourself a few questions; Am I doing some form of physical activity every day? Do I raise my heart rate 3 or 4 times a week? Do I eat 3 healthy meals a day with a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats with plenty of fruits and vegetables? Do I drink 2 litres of water a day? Do I limit my intake of processed and sugary foods? It would be great to think that most people can put a tick next to each of these questions, but the reality is that work, family, stress, tiredness and boredom all get in the way.The problem is that our bodies are not designed for a sedentary lifestyle combined with the western diet we have become accustomed to. Over time, people have developed a pattern of eating more and doing less. This has caused rising obesity, increased levels of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and osteoporosis. You’re the only one that can make the change! There are some simple steps you can take to help you on the road to a healthier lifestyle. The first piece of advice we would give is to join a gym. Walking and in home exercises are great, but you need to try and get your heart rate up significantly 3 times a week. Remember, the heart is like any other muscle in the body; if you make it work harder it adapts and gets stronger. A stronger heart means a healthier body. At a gym, you can also try some more resistance-based exercises, essential for protecting your bones from osteoporosis.Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, but the same old workouts all the time and lack of atmosphere in a gym can be really de-motivating. So here is our challenge; come down to Cotswolds Health and Fitness Club and have a chat with us and see what it’s like. Commit to a couple of months of exercise and healthy eating, and if you don’t feel fitter and healthier at the end of it, we’ll give you your money back! Remember, the gym here is different to others; we’re fun, professional and there are always personal trainers on hand to offer help and advice. We really want to help people enjoy their exercise and make a change for the better – there’s nothing to lose! The Cotswold Health and Fitness Club team

F DRAISINGU N

“Run-Of-The-Mill” Mum Takes On Multi-Marathon ChallengeTen marathons in ten days sounds like a mission for Superman – or Superwoman. But Claire Harrison insists she’s

just a normal person, albeit one with a driving passion. She will attempt to run 262 miles around England’s largest lake on 12 May. The epic 10 in 10 Brathay Challenge, at Windermere, in the Lake District, is billed as the ‘UK’s ultimate endurance running event’. Claire, forty, from Lower Slaughter, aims to raise £5,000 for the Brathay Trust. The charity nurtures young people’s potential to inspire them to engage positively in their communities and improve their futures.

“I want to prove ordinary people can do extraordinary things,” said Claire, who feels the charity’s mission chimes with her own. But the bad news is she’s not exactly your average couch potato. Besides being a mum-of-four and having three ‘crazy’ dogs, she’s up with the larks to run before work as practice manager for Stow Physio at Bourton-on-the-Water. She’s a running coach for Tim Spittle, owner of Freestyle 360 gym, Blockley, and John Maher, landlord of the Golden Ball, Lower Swell. She instructs a spin class and she runs with Almost Athletes club at Cheltenham. Now she’s also membership secretary for just-launched triathlon club North Cotswold Tri and Run (NCTR). And Claire has also completed a mere fourteen marathons.

Despite her daunting track record, down-to-earth Claire feels anyone can do it with enough determination. “If you believe – you can achieve whatever

your goal might be,” said Claire, who has daughters Amy, twenty, Connie fifteen, and twins Robbie and Daisy, six. “I’ve been running for ten years and it’s shaped my life,” she declared. “But ten months after my twins were born in 2010 it was a real struggle to get going again. Then I did my first marathon which gave me the confidence to join Bourton Roadrunners. I then did the London Marathon for Help the Hospices as I’d had a young friend who had died of cancer.”

Claire was spurred on herself by meeting fellow Bourton Roadrunner Steve Edwards, the first athlete in the world to run 500 marathons in an average 3 hr 30 mins finish time. The Brathay Challenge came on her radar and she tried out the Windermere Marathon. “It was a really hot and slow marathon over all those hills, which ended tears of relief,” she admitted. But whilst there I was inspired by the people doing it over tendays and were still giving.”

Having almost applied once before, Claire’s looming fortieth was also a major trigger. She aims to do each marathon in under four hours. But her biggest fear is not being able to manage her mission physically. “I do fear injury and failure. It would be so painful not to complete it and just go back to reality. It’s a bit selfish but I most look forward to ten days of just running. That will be my job every day; to get up, look after myself and run twenty-six miles. One of the reasons I run is because home is quite hectic and it gives you ‘me’ time and you can clear the thoughts in your head. It

gets me out in the country lanes and I see all that at different times of the day. One day I saw a badger family at dusk, which was magical.”

The athlete is now on a strict ten-day training plan. She runs every day and includes a few long-distance stints, hills and speed work and hits the gym. She has one day off and then starts all over again.

Claire is one of only seventeen people in the country to be selected for the 10 in 10, after paying the entrance fee from her spinning class earnings. She has already raised around £2,600 for the charity through events including the Slaughter Valentine’s 10k, a promises auction and a car wash.

To sponsor Claire, support fundraising events and see her progress visit www.justgiving/claire-harrison30. For details of the 10 in 10 visit www.brathaychallenges.com. Caroline Fisher

A month into the new tax year and already workers are starting to see the benefit of the increase in the personal allowance for income tax to £11,500. However, as pointed out numerous times, National Insurance

Contributions (NICS), the “forgotten tax”, continue to hit pay at a much lower rate on earnings of only £157 per week. Add to that the fact that NICS are calculated weekly then those who earn less than the annual equivalent, £8,164, are being penalised. Successive governments have publicised the increases in the personal allowance but all have failed to mention that, for most, the rate of tax on income is 32% not 20%.

Fiddle, fiddle, fiddle, it’s enough to make Nero turn in his grave. Why, oh why do successive Chancellors fiddle with the bits of the economy that are working well. We’ve had it with the rental market, that’s depressed, we’ve had it with inheritance tax, that’s depressing & now they’re having a go at the one-man bands who have been successfully working under contracts to various companies, including Parliament & government offices! For some reason the government seems to think that these people are avoiding paying tax whereas, in a lot of cases, the reality is that is that they are paying more tax as many are also paying the 13.8% employer’s NIC as well as their employee contribution. Following my article on this subject last month I’ve had numerous people phone to ask what they should do as, in quite a few cases, they’re going to have to give up work as it doesn’t make financial sense to continue. This is daft, why destroy the one area of the economy that is going great guns.

It seems that the government have it in for the self-employed, the U-turn after the recent budget is a case in point. The Chancellor honestly believed that he could increase NIC’s for the self-employed without anyone noticing. The thoughtless act highlighted the need for a complete overhaul of the tax system so that there is parity between all workers & all companies. A tax system based on a percentage of income is the way forward, it’s simple, it can’t be tinkered with & everybody pays!Robb Eden is based in Moreton-in-Marsh. Billed as ‘a small festival with big ideas’, the boutique-y Also Festival (alsofestival.com) at Park Farm, Compton Verney runs over the weekend of June 30th- July 2nd. An intriguing concept, it combines the chance to listen to specialist speakers on a wide variety of subjects, with an eclectic mix of entertainers and musicians and global food and wine offerings. Add to this nature talks (including one entitled ‘Could You Live Like A Badger?!!) workshops and family-friendly entertainment and it sounds like a break from the norm.At the more visceral end of the cultural spectrum, 2,000 Trees Festival (twothousandtreesfestival.co.uk) hoves into view at Upcote Farm, near Cheltenham, from 6th to the 8th of July. Celebrating a decade of bringing the very best of cutting edge music to rural Gloucestershire, this year’s line up features sets from from acts such as Slaves, Nothing But Thieves, Jamie Lenman, Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes and Lower than Atlantis. This year’s Wilderness Festival (wildernessfestival.com) from 6th-8th August continues its tradition of mixing the surreal with the ethereal and throwing together a hotchpotch of musical and entertainment genres in an attractive blend. Highlights this year will include headliners Grace Jones, Bonobo and Two Door Cinema Club, while celeb chefs vie for attention with Ronnie Scott’s Jazz events, An Evening of Nina Simone with the Wilderness Orchestra, Sadler’s Wells ballet and Hip Hop Karaoke! The following weekend (11th-13th August) sees the return of Lakesfest (lakefest.co.uk). Set against the glorious backdrop of Eastnor Castle just over the county line, this year’s theme is ‘Hawaiian’, although there’s a distinctly ‘recent retro’ flavour to the line up. Topping the bill are perennial live favourites including the ever-popular Feeder, Wilko Johnson, The

Charlatans, Turin Brakes, Alabama 3, Seth Lakeman and Imelda May. There’s also a full ‘undercard’ of great acts, including ‘world class BMX bike action’, so never a dull moment.Running almost concurrently with Lakefest is Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival (fairportconvention.com) between August 10th and 12th. With the chaps themselves traditionally bringing festivities to a close on the Saturday evening, this year sees them joined by an array of talent including Marillion, former bandmate Richard Thompson, The Divine Comedy and Show of Hands, to name but a few. ...lovely, gentle fare – ideal to wallow in with a glass or two of local beer or cider. Isn’t that the original philosophy of all great festivals?

Now boasting a spin-off event in Canada, this year’s Big Feastival (thebigfeastival.com) on the 25-27th August sees Jamie Oliver and Alex James once again welcome an expanding gang of revellers to the latter’s Kingham Farm. Many of the usual favourites will be onstage again, including The Cuban Brothers, De La Soul and Norman Jay, but putting the fizz back into the feast will be those master of liver performance – Madness. Olly Murs, Ella Eyre, Faithless (DJ Set),Gentleman’s Dub Club , Louisa Johnson and The Cribs are also on the bill, while the menu of celebrity chefs (names include Rick and Jack Stein, Antonio Carluccio, Jose Pizarro and 2016 Great British Bake Off winner Candice Brown, will ensure no one goes hungry! A great finish to a fantastic summer of festival fun...

Stow Cotswold Festival is going back to its roots. From 11am to 11pm on Saturday, July 15, the biennial event will celebrate traditional Cotswold life, crafts and heritage. Focus returns to the once-flourishing wool trade which brought Stow its wealth and reputation. Traditional Cotswold Sheep – often known as Lions because of their distinctive ‘dreadlocks’ - will be on display alongside woolly Alpacas to give a modern twist.Cotswold Lion Sheep, from Conygree Farm, Aldsworth, will be in Stow Square. Visitors can pet the animals and feel a distinctive fleece, before discovering the stages it goes through to become a finished product. Look out for displays of weaving, carding and

spinning as well as knitting, crocheting, felting and crewel work. Enthusiasts can also add their own stitches to help create a unique community embroidery.

Dry-stone wallers will be hands-on in the Square, organised by the Cotswolds Conservation Board which runs rural skills courses and co-ordinates voluntary wardens. Magnificent birds of prey are set for Stocks Green. An eagle, owl, falcon and hawk, from Cotswold Falconry Centre, can be handled. North Cotswold Beekeepers’ Association should also create a buzz with an observation hive and honey products on sale.St Edward’s Hall will display artefacts relating to the town’s greatest claim to fame - the 1646 Battle of Stow. Armour, arms and paintings from the Captain Christie Crawfurd (corr) collection will join special items from last year’s popular ‘Pop-up Museum’. Forty market stalls, featuring food, gifts and charity items, as well as a jumbo tombola, will cater for avid shoppers. Children can enjoy games, a treasure hunt and face painting. Entertainers perform throughout the day including circus entertainer John Hayns, Cotswold School Band and Zumba classes. From 7pm revellers can dance to more live music as the sun sets. “We hope everyone will enjoy the day, which is supporting local charities..” said Mr Wiblin. The Festival is fundraising for three local causes: Kate’s Home Nursing, Great Western Air Ambulance and Stow Primary School. The Sam Pilcher Trust will man the Festival car park. For more information please visit stowcotswoldfestival.com

Increasing Awareness of Pancreatic CancerAcross the nation this year, 9,600 men and women will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and 8,800 will die of the diseaseIt is the UK’s fifth worst cause of cancer death, with a survival rate of just 5% – the worst of the twenty-two most common cancers.

Twenty-six people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each day – twenty-four of them will die each day. Despite these stats, research into the disease is chron-ically underfunded.

Pancreatic Cancer Action is a UK charity founded by Ali Stunt, a rare survivor of the disease, to raise awareness of pancreat-ic cancer with the public, the UK medical community and the government, in order to improve early diagnosis.

Ali Stunt says that: “Despite the increas-ingly high rate of pancreatic cancer in the UK, our new research highlights a funda-mental lack of awareness of the tell-tale signs of the disease.

“With no screening process for pancreatic cancer currently available, it is imperative that people can spot the signs and symp-toms early enough to make surgery a via-ble option, in order to secure earlier diag-nosis of this deadly disease, and improve survival rates.”

Only 10% of patients are eligible for po-tentially curative surgery due to late diag-nosis.

Symptoms include (but are not limited to) jaundice, weight loss, new onset diabetes and severe abdominal or back pain. Most people with these symptoms do not have pancreatic cancer, but anyone with one or more of them should see their GP. Studies show that diagnosis early enough for sur-gery increases a patient’s life expectancy significantly. For more information visit: pancreaticcanceraware.org.

You can help to increase awareness and ultimately reduce pancreatic can-cer deaths in the UK – contact Nata-sha at Pancreatic Cancer Action at: [email protected]

Shipston Home Nursing is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and is planning a number of fundraising events throughout the year, including a 20th Anniversary Ball in September and a 10k Run in April.

The charity was launched in 1997 to provide essential care to terminally-ill people who wish to be nursed at home.

Rebecca Mawle, fundraising co-ordinator for the charity said: "The charity is fantastic and our nurses are truly amazing.

"We are very well supported by the local community and the charity simply would not exist without the hundreds of volunteers that we have. Local people in the community help day in day out, year in year out and for that we are so grateful.”

Shipston Home Nursing was founded by a district nurse called Charlie Wells, with the help of local doctors from the medical centre at Shipston as well as businessmen and friends. The charity is funded through a variety of sources and they currently care for 26 terminally-ill people.

The anniversary ball in September is set to be the highlight of the celebrations at Admington Hall with a 1920s theme to it, featuring a champagne reception and carriages. Look out for more information.

Litter Strategy for EnglandGov’t proposals new enforcement, education and

Cleaning up litter cost taxpayers nearly £800m. The new measures are designed to hit the most serious litterers with £150 fines, while vehicle owners could receive penalty notices when it can be proved litter was thrown from their car – this notice is already in force in London.

Further new measures include:• Issuing new guidance for councils to update ‘binfrastructure’ with new designs and better distribution of public litter bins, making it easier for people to discard rubbish.• Stopping councils from charging householders for disposal of DIY household waste at civic amenity sites (rubbish dumps) – legally, household waste is supposed to be free to dispose of at these sites.• Recommending that offenders on community sentences, including people caught fly-tipping, help councils clear up litter and fly-tipped waste.• Working with Highways to target the worst litter hotspots • Creating a ‘green generation’ - educating children to lead the fight against litter through Eco-Schools and boosting participation in national clean-up days.• Creating a new expert group to examine options to reduce the worst kinds of litter, including plastic bottles and drinks containers, cigarette ends and fast food packaging.

Villager News, May 2017A huge “Thank you” to all who have supported us in the last twelve months! As many of you know, 2016 was a turbulent years for local bus services in our area, as WOCC removed all route subsidies from all our local bus operators, both non–profit and commercial.

As far as Villager was concerned, this effectively wiped out a huge slice of our funding, and left us staring into a big financial black hole. But thanks to great support from local companies, in particular the Chipping Norton Co-op, and many local councils whose areas we serve, we finished 2016 on an even keel. But we are primarily hugely grateful to all our loyal passengers, who support us and encourage us to keep going – just by being on the bus! Passenger numbers are growing.

We have also made some strategic adjustments to some of our routes, in order to be more effective in both passenger pick up points and in mileage travelled.

So we are now in a strong position to build on the past challenges, and still be financially sound. We plan to order a new bus for delivery in June, keeping our fleet modern and cost-effective. Although our driver base is sound, we are always looking for new volunteer drivers, both male and female. Please contact the website address below if you fancy driving a bright red sixteen-seat bus around our beautiful Cotswold lanes and countryside, and being a vital link in our local communities.

New bike scheme available at Moreton-in-Marsh station, Kingham and Oxford

Based on the idea of convenient, flexible and easy-to-use bike hire, Bainton Bikes is offering a new bike scheme at GWR’s Moreton-in-Marsh station.

The new bike hire scheme has no docking stations and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and builds on schemes available in Oxford and Kingham.

The scheme allows customers to hire the bike at any time of the day, use it as necessary, and return it when finished.

HOW? Book a bike on the Bainton Bikes website baintonbikes.com and downloading the app from Bainton’s software partner, Donkey Republic. The app lets customers find, unlock and relock the bike. Once customers have located their bike, they are free to ride.

The bike hire company also offers a 24-hour helpline to tackle any problems and are on hand should the need arise.

Kevin Moreland, Director of Bainton Bikes said: “Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the key entry points to the Cotswolds, having easily accessible bikes available when you arrive allows visitors to reach and explore more areas without the need for a car.”

Life-saving pet masks will help Moreton Community Fire Station save our

pets’ livesA set of life saving pet oxygen masks has been donated by Sue Gilkes, owner of Animals At Home Ltd to Watch Manager Bryan Gregory and Crew Manager Laura Kemp of Moreton Community Fire Station (pictured left)

The masks are specially designed by Animals at Home to help prevent pets

dying from smoke inhalation in house fires.

The fire service currently tries to revive pets using human oxygen masks, which are not designed for use on animals.

Animals at Home, which has branches in Malmesbury, Cricklade and Highworth, has donated a set of the specially designed masks to Moreton Community Fire Station.

Pet oxygen masks are specifically designed for dogs, cats and smaller animals such as rabbits and snakes and are more efficient than trying to use human masks.

By using the set of masks donated, the fire service can assist pets at the fire incident without having to learn new skills or buying extra equipment.

Adam Henson, popular TV presenter and arguably the nation’s favourite farmer, is once again diversifying the family’s farming business.Together with his business partner Duncan Andrews, and their friends Tim Lanfear and Jose Perieria, Adam is launching a new bushcraft experience on his Cotswolds farm. The one-day course from newly-launched ‘Cotswold Adventures’ will suit adrenaline-seekers and land-lovers alike, from families to corporate groups. Surrounded by beautiful rolling hills, and under the canopy of the private woodland, attendees will learn all about basic foraging, shelter building, game preparation, fire-lighting, whittling and natural navigation.“I grew up running around this woodland with my sisters, enjoying the peace of it but also the challenges it throws up at you”, says Henson. “It’s a real pleasure to invite people up here to come and experience a slice of it for themselves. Tim and Jose are qualified bushcraft instructors, so they’re safe pairs of hands to guide everyone through it.”Apart from one adults-only session in July, the course is intended to be as inclusive as possible, with a minimum age of just 8 years.“Living in such a fast-paced world, full of technology, it’s never been more important to just get kids out into nature,” Henson continues. “This is a way of encouraging them – in a safe environment – to get outside their comfort zone and try

something new and a bit different. They may never whittle wood or start a fire again in their lives, but at least they’ll know how to! It’s a great way to spend time bonding as a family as well, because in some cases, the parents may not have experienced these things either, so you’re all coming to it from the same level.”There was great feedback following a trial session of the course, with one mum writing “would wholeheartedly recommend it, it’s an adventure, a challenge and not your run-of-the-mill walk in the woods. My eight year old loved it, and something he will talk about for a long time!” There will be twelve weekend bushcraft sessions this year, with limited places available and the option to extend your trip by staying at the newly-renovated camp site. Visit www.cotswoldadventures.com to book your places; £100 for adults and £80 for children.

Gardening Masterclasses Take RootThe Moreton Show Home and Garden team held a special workshop on Easter Monday at the Fosseway Garden Centre in Moreton in Marsh. The aim of the Moreton Show – Have a Go session was to demonstrate that even gardening newcomers can grow and prepare fruits, vegetables and flowers to impress the judges.Local vegetable growing expert, Chris Small led the way with advice on

entering the produce section; members of Moreton in Marsh Flower Club had handy hints on flower arranging and children were taught how to make a mini garden and how to grow potatoes.Moreton Show, which takes place on Saturday, 2 September, is keen to encourage new entrants to its Home and Garden section.Gill Godwin, chief children’s steward, said: ‘It was fantastic to see so many

people wanting to know more about taking part in our show. The children were all so creative and I think they had a lot of fun learning something new.’

Moreton Show is one of the biggest one-day agricultural shows in the country and there are plenty of classes to get involved in. Details of all the classes to enter in every section are available on the Moreton Show website at www.moretonshow.co.uk.

At the start of April we were lucky to have two opportunities to provide the tea and cakes at Chastleton House National Trust property. The parents from our Playgroup and Toddlers provided some wonderful home-made cakes and we took a sumptuous £1005. We will also be providing the home-made teas for the NGS open gardens at The Manor, Little Compton on Sunday 4 June from 2 till 5 so do join us if you can. We often make our own snack with

the children and recently made chocolate crispy nests for Easter, each child had their own bowl to clean. Our playgroup session is 9.15 am–1 pm Monday to Thursday with extended sessions available on Monday and Thursday until 2.45 pm. Contact Jo Abrahams, our Early Years Professional on 07796 987173 or email [email protected] to arrange a visit. We also run a drop-in Toddler Group for children from birth to school-age on a Friday from 10–12

S UNDS ALIVE SOMEWHERE OVER THAT RAINBOW

Nicholas JohnJudy Garland’s first live appearances in London were in 1951, at the Palladium where she topped the bill for a month. Six years later, in October 1957, she returned to the Dominion Theatre for another month-long season entitled “Miss Showbusiness” culminating in her appearance at the Palladium as part of the Royal Variety Performance on 18 November .

In October 1957, prior to the Dominion run, she recorded a session at EMI’s Abbey Road studios and, between 2 and 9 August 1960, she returned to record a further twenty numbers. My father, Michael John (1927-2003), then working as a singer for EMI, had fond memories of these sessions.

“I’d seen Judy Garland once before, at a dinner at the Dorchester and, to be honest, I hadn’t been that impressed, considering her newsworthy appeal and ‘star status.’ She was garishly dressed with heavy make-up, surrounded by showbiz disciples and appeared loud and brash. But then I was

contracted to be part of a four-piece backing-group for a session with her at EMI’s Abbey Road studios. The four of us were grouped behind our single stand microphone directly behind the vocal booth that she was to record in. I fully expected some Hollywood ‘airs and graces’ and I wasn’t surprised when, as we started to rehearse the first number, Judy stopped the recording by walking out of the booth, saying loudly that “this won’t do at all!”

“Here we go,” I thought, “another temperamental star!” But she announced

that she couldn’t hear us very well, smiled a wonderful smile and told the producer that she would like to sing with us, not in front of us. Screens and mics were moved and then, as everyone prepared for a first full take, she turned to me and asked for the note to check her pitch. I was captivated in that moment and spent the rest of the session in a daze, with Judy Garland singing close to my right ear.

A month later, I found myself at the most famous theatre in the world, the London Palladium, for the 1957 Royal Variety Performance. The bill included Mario Lanza, Vera Lynn, Count Basie and His Orchestra, Tommy Steele and, of course, Judy Garland, who we were backing live. After a long, orchestral overture, she walked onto the stage and the theatre erupted. I had never seen anything like it. We were at the back and this tiny figure, alone in the lights, mesmerised the audience, holding them in the palm of her hands. I had never seen a performance of such strength and charisma – the sheer power and personality that poured out of her was astonishing.

In August 1960, we were again at Abbey Road, with more singers this time. Studio One was large enough for a full orchestra (conducted by Norrie Paramor), and Judy led them with tempo and rhythm and working with us on harmony and volume. At one point, someone suggested to her that we held a note so we’d all stop at the same time. She looked at the four of us and smiled, “I don’t stop – I hold it through to the very end!”

There is an interesting clip on YouTube entitled EMI recording with Judy 1960 in which Joan Coulson, now an author who has written extensively about Judy Garland, recounts her own memories of one of the August sessions at Abbey Road – well worth a watch.

Judy Garland once addressed the London Palladium thus: “I believe in the idea of a rainbow. I’ve spent my whole life trying to get over it!”

Moreton in Marsh Cricket ClubCaptains Message

We approach the season with great hope and by the time of this publication we will have completed our pre-season friendlies and look to play our first competitive game of the league season home against Wellesbourne. The players met in early April at the Bell Inn in the town to talk through the team targets and where we as a group of players would like to be at the end of the season, hopefully we can achieve these goals.

May Fixtures –

Wellesbourne 2nds Home 6 May

Badsey Away 13 May

The Lenches Home 20 May

Broadway Away 27 May

We look forward to seeing you at these games, we expect the bar to be open and (we hope) the sun to be out for all our home games!

Finally we look to an unsung hero of the club, this week is somebody who is at every club event has recently taken to umpiring league games and is somebody who doesn’t mince his words but gives good and honest advice to all players on the pitch. Charlie Shadbolt has played for Moreton for a number of years. He is always helping at community events behind the bar, car parking and rabbit catching at the club. He has also has become an eagle eyed umpire for the team. We all would like to thank him for his hard work.

All Stars Cricket Fun, safe and welcoming activity sessions for five to eight year olds and their families this spring.

This spring, North Cotswold Young Cricketers: http://ncotswold.play-cricket.com and Moreton Cricket Club are launching brand new beginners activity sessions for five to eight year old girls and boys and their parents, who want to have fun and see if cricket might be for them as part of the national ‘All Stars’ cricket initiative: https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars. We are running a series of eight x 40 min fun activities on Friday evenings from 6.30 pm from 26 May through to July at Moreton in Marsh Cricket Club.

We have a team of trained and accredited, local volunteer coaches on hand who will ensure that everyone has fun and feels involved. You don’t need to know anything about cricket - this is aimed at getting to grips with the basics of catching, throwing and hitting a ball – giving each child a sense of achievement and fun at the end of each session. We’ll get the parents involved too and will give you some ideas for further activities to try at home once they (and you) have the bug!

The cost of the eight sessions will be £45 per child and in addition, each child will receive their own fabulous (and free) ‘all-stars’ personalised cricket shirt and cricket essentials such as a bat, ball, cap, drinks bottle and

rucksack to really make them feel part of the team! We’re expecting places to book up quickly, so to register your child please visit https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars.

North Cotswold Young Cricketers ClubWe welcome boys and girls who are keen to learn Cricket from the ages of eight upwards, we have accredited ECB

Coaches all with relevant experience and CRB checked.

Teams in 2016 were entered at Under Seventeen, Under Fifteen, Under Thirteen and Under Eleven plus the new GCB Under Nineteen T20 format, which was a highlight of the season! This will largely be replicated in the 2017 season.

Coaching takes place on Friday Evenings form 6.30 pm to 8 pm at Moreton Cricket Club, Batsford Road Moreton in Marsh. For further information contact Andrew Sunderland on 07966551095 or visit ncycc.secure-club.com.

MORETON RANGERS FCContact: moretonrangersfc.com

Moreton Rangers Under TwelvesMoreton Rangers Under Twelves are nearing the end of their first season of competitive football in the WDYFL. The team coached by Lynsey Burdock and Ben Carter, have enjoyed a magnificent season. The team have lost only three league games, and are guaranteed to finish third therefore showing how competitive the league is with ‘no room for error’.

The coaches have been impressed with the determination and ‘never give up’ attitude the team have displayed in every game.

One of the focuses this season was on developing a ‘pressing game’, pressurising the opposition when in possession. This has worked really well and has enabled the team to win the ball back early therefore giving the team more touches and time

on the ball which is crucial for their development; improving their decision making and giving them increased goal-scoring opportunities. With one game remaining, the team have already scored seventy-three goals in the league, this in itself shows the coaches how much improvement the squad has made compared to previous seasons. The Under Twelves came very close to winning the league but unfortunately it was not to be and if the team continue to put in the same hard work and determination at training then next season will be very exciting indeed.

The Under Twelves travel to Launton, Bicester on 29 April for their last game of the season, and have a seven-a-side tournament at premiership team Leicester City’s King Power Stadium to look forward to on 4 June.

Lynsey and Ben would like to thank kit sponsors Tallis Amos Group and all parents and supporters and await celebrating the teams excellent season at the Moreton Rangers Youth end of season awards evening on 19 May again kindly being sponsored by Warner Budgens.

Moreton Rangers First TeamMoreton Rangers First Team have had a poor April and have seen

the promotion push falter. Defeat to local rivals Bourton Rovers at Rissington Road 2-1 and then 4-0 at Kidlington has left the team out of the promotion places and with other results not going in their favour it looks like a disappointing end to the season. It has been a great effort by all the players and coaches involved to lead the way for such a long period and they will no doubt bounce back with a fresh challenge next season.

Clubroom NewsThe good news for the club is that the building of our new Clubroom carries on a pace thanks to the great support from Mike Hounor Windows Ltd who have been very generous backing of the project. All at the club would like to thank Mike and his team for its continued support.

Volunteers WantedAs a club, we are always looking to improve our profile and communication with our members. We are looking for someone who can co-ordinate our social media and website for all our teams so we keep everyone up to date with club activities.

Our Junior team coaches would also appreciate anyone happy to deal with the administration of the teams so they can concentrate on coaching the teams.

If you feel you can help or want more information, please contact Martin Jones on 01608650955 or [email protected].
