(Carl’s employer, the Schmidt Lithograph Company, was famous for the design and printing of the striking and very artistic labels then used on the wooden packing crates for citrus fruit. In the 1950's, corrugated cardboard boxes replaced the wooden crates, and the artistic labels were no longer used. Today these labels are prized collector's items. The reproduction of photographs is those days was crude by today’s standards. Worse still, the microfilming process produced black shadows, blank highlights, spurious spots and lines, and showed a screen pattern in the middle tones. The writer partially restored these photos by digitally removing the larger of the extraneous spots and lines, and blurring portions of the image to subdue the remaining spots, lines, and screen pattern, and to create a more gradual transition between tones. This resulted in restoring these photos to barely passable appearance. No changes were made to make the portraits more flattering, nor was I tempted to do so, for the Bruntsch family members were quite good looking.
