That’s what Kimberly House in Har- rington Road offers and in addition to it they serve the authentic South Indian vegetarian and a few conti- nental. ‘This was a general idea and a common thought. We had the place, which came together,’ says the co- founders Karthy Lakshmanan and Jayakrishna Madan. ‘The idea was to keep it old. As I worked in Tan- jore, I wanted to keep the antiquity, all the culture that there. And the best way to bring that was to play with the house. Cuisine and other things were decided in a week. I wanted to bring in the club culture and the menu in it. We were very clear that we do not want to start a themed restaurant,’ said, Jayakrish- na Madan. The indoor dining is designed among sketches and portraits of olden times and has retained the original layout with art deco sofas in the family room and lounge furniture in one room. The outdoor dining is named ‘Under the Mango tree’, amidst a lot of greenery. ‘We wanted keep traditional South Indian and English, because the bunglow had a old heritage, left by people who lived here. The bunga- low was built by the late Diwan Ba- hadur Nageswara Iyer, who was a chief engineer to the government of India and architect of the Tirupati- Tirumala Ghat Roads,’ says, Karthy Lakshmanan. Spread over an area of 5,000 sq ft with indoor and garden dining facili- ties, Kimberly House, has a seating capacity of 45. ‘The eatery’s menu includes filter coffee made from fresh decoction, gunpowder idly, masala dosa, puliogare and much more. Some of the ingredients used in the Tam-Bram cuisine are care- fully selected to retain authentic- ity and traditionally,’ they added. ‘ It is my passion. I have travelled a lot and learnt new recipes, that further strengthened my culinary skills. Through this, we are happy to connect with our customers and re-introduce some forgotten recipes and make sure that our tradition and heritage in our food is kept alive,’ said Jayakrishna. Talking about the menu, ‘We have continental soups, vegan soups. English items have egg and I don’t want to add non-veg. Merging con- tinental and English was new and we wanted to try it,’ he added. ‘We wanted to create a homely feel.’ On asking about the name of the restaurant, Karthy Lakshmanan, said, ‘When we look in to history, the area was then called, Kimberly Gardens. Later plotted and sold, the name changed to Harrington Road. We thought that it adds more to the history, so we decided on the name. Kimberly is an English name and that suited the idea too.’ What to try? Before you try any of their dishes try onion pakoda. The crisply fried savoury makes the perfect snack. It is served with a raw mango dip which is the best in the menu. I also tried tomato soup which is more of a country type. ‘It is just tomato soup and vegetables with no cream P T USHA One can never deny that the sari is definitely the best garment that has been created in India and its fluid drape looks no less than a trendy suit. So why not try to notch up the desi-style by experimenting like eves do with western outfits? Below are the 13 types of unique sarees that everyone must check in into their closets. Benarasi The love for this traditionally wo- ven silk from Varanasi will never go down among women. The light weighted silk is handwoven in the State and is more like owning a piece of art and history rolled in six yards of absolute pleasure. Kancheevaram Silk Saree While Benarasi is for North, Kancheevaram is for South. The sari is well known for its elegance, unique and finely designed borders. This silk made - mostly of mulberry silk is also known for its expansive and elaborate gold border that comes with intricate patterns and traditional motifs such as the temple borders and tales of local folklore. Kasavu Sari All the way from God’s own coun- try, the Kasavu sari from Kerala is a sim- ple cotton sari in off- white with a golden border which was developed as an extension from the Kerala mundu-sari. It is also the State’s costume dress and used to adorn the deities of the region. In recent days it can be witnessed that love for this material is spreading all over the State of Tamilnadu. Ikat This is a double-woven fabric that makes patterns in the yarn stage. The fabric is known for its beautiful geometric patterns that form what is known as Ikat. A cotton or silk Ikat sari is a priced possession in every woman’s closet. Pochampally Technically, Pochampally is similar to Ikat with differences in design and fabric. hPocham- pally belongs to Telangana and looks rather fab and rich. The saris mostly come out in sound colours. Paithani Named after Paithan town in Aurangabad, these saris are woven by hand and are made from fine silk which makes these sari’s one of the richest in India. Paithani is characterized by borders of an oblique square design and a pallu with a peacock design. The kaleidoscopic effect is achieved by using one color for weaving lengthwise and another for weaving widthwise. Bandhini A Bandhini sari is made by tying small knots on the entire surface of the fabric, with a resist or gum so as to not permit the colour to flow every- where. High on technique and even more so on style, this type of sari’s are usually made in chiffon and is a rainbow of colours. Muga silk The speciality of this silk is known by the silkworms they are made from. The larvae of these moths feed on som (Machilus bombycina) and soalu (Litsea polyantha) leaves. How the Assamese adapt this in their Mekhala Chador is fascinating and owning a piece will only make your wardrobe many times prettier. ‘English restaurant serves local cuisine Kimberly House in city offers a wide variety of customary & continental food with ‘50's ambience Must-have types of saris! Embrace culture by experimenting with different styles Karthy Lakshmanan and Jayakrishna Madan in it. We serve five different soups. It is more of a vegan and we serve it with a half portion of bread,’ says Jayakrishna. ‘For dosa we serve two types of dosa. It is common dosa, but the way we serve it differs. One is dosa three ways and the other is dosa trio.’ ‘And for puliogare we serve it with vadam, which is again our culture,’ says Karthy. For des- sert I had a normal kesari, pineapple kesari and Chikoo kesari, all togeth- er served with vanilla bean icecream which is an absolute treat. And for the coffee, they serve it in copper tumbler and davara, and also served with karupatti and white sugar. ‘We also have handmade jewel- ery that is for sale,’ they add. On future plans the duo said that they are planning to expand. ‘We have embarked on location wise expan- sion and we are also planning to include breakfasts in the menu only on weekends,’ they sign off.
