THE BIG IDEA: By believing the gospel we received the Spirit and the blessing of Abraham. OPENING: • What are some of the reasons that people leave Christianity? • What pressures have you faced as a Christian? SCRIPTURE: Read Galatians 3:1-5 • Paul uses the term “foolish” two times in this passage. Why does he call them foolish? o What did they do that caused Paul to call them foolish? o What other things can people do that the Bible describes them as foolish? II Samuel 24:10, II Corinthians 16:7-9, Proverbs 10:1, 14:17, 21:20, Matthew 25:2-8, Titus 3:9 • Paul placed a lot of emphasis on the work of the Spirit of God. Galatians 3:2 is the first time in the letter that “Spirit” is seen. Throughout the remainder of the book “Spirit” will show up 15 more times. o How focused are you on the Holy Spirit working in your life? o Review what the Spirit does in a believer’s life. How has the Spirit worked in your life? • Paul asks an interesting series of questions that all of us should answer. o Are we trying to be made complete in the flesh? “Made Complete” could be passive voice or middle voice. Done to, done by for self. Is there a difference? o Have you suffered so much for nothing? What is the value in suffering? o Does God continually supply you His Spirit and work miracles because you observe the law? Read Galatians 3:6-9 • Why did Paul make reference to Abraham? Galatians 3:6 is a quote from Genesis 15:2-11 • Read Genesis 15:2-18. The covenant with Abraham is an unconditional promise. o What is the lesson we are to learn from Abraham? o Galatians 3:8 is an odd verse, what do you think it means? • John talked about the meaning of righteousness. He suggested that everybody is looking for righteousness, do you agree with him, why or why not? • How do we become righteous with God?
