Pongakawa Christmas Carol Service

Everyone is welcome to a family evening of carols and candle lighting on Sunday 15th

December 2019 at the Pongakawa Hall 7 - 9 pm. Hosted by the Pongakawa School.

A plate to share as part of a community supper following the service is always

appreciated if possible.

Dear Parents and Caregivers Only two and half more weeks of school left and while many might think it’s time to slow down and get ready for the break in fact it is one of the busiest times of the year for us. As we close of 2019 we are also deep into the planning for 2020 in a whole variety of areas. For those people who have children moving into the middle or senior blocks next year we have now secured pricing on chromebooks for those who may wish to purchase one. This is an optional resource for parents to buy and the school has no expectation that this must happen. If you decide to buy one for your child then they will be able to bring this home on a daily basis and use as you see fit outside of school hours. All children in year 5 to 8 are supplied with a chrome book regardless so do not feel any pressure to get one unless you want to. Once again we are supplying HP 11inch G7 touch screen chrome books. The cost to parents is $465.00 including GST. Our supplier is Grant Gilbert from GIlcom Ltd who has a long association with Pongakawa School. We have now locked in our teaching teams for 2020. We have some staff who have been on maternity leave returning, one from overseas coming back as well as one new staff member. Below I have listed the teams as they are looking. I think you will agree we have a very strong and professional teaching staff ready for your children next year as we have had each and every year.

The Education Minister Chris Hipkins has announced $400 million of new spending for schools over the weekend. This is to enable schools to continue to modernise and upgrade their campus. We are currently working with the Ministry on a fairly in depth survey of Pongakawa as I have been discussing with them for some time my concerns in regard to the allocation of property funding for our school. We are making good progress in this area and this funding we are anticipating is in addition to the work being proposed. Our share of the latest announcement is approximately $220,000.00. Have a great week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Broad Brimmed Hats - Important Feed Back Sort from Whanau

From February 2019 broad brimmed and bucket hats have been compulsory at school in terms 1 and 4 in line with the school policy.

We are seeking expressions of interest with a view to providing hats for sale from the school office.

Broad brimmed hats Would be available to purchase unnamed for $12.00

or for an extra $6.00 we can have their name printed on them. Bucket hats

Available for $10.00 unnamed or $16.00 named. Either style of hat would be available in a range of our house colours i.e. green, red, yellow and blue as well as Navy blue and our school colour of black.

Please contact the school office if this is something that parents/caregivers would like us to make available to purchase from our school office.

Sickness Reminder An important reminder that the Ministry of Health requests a 48 hour stand down period after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea before a student can return to school. If your child is sick please do not send them to school. We are currently seeing cases of strep throat, cold sores and tummy bugs at school and each of these are easily spread amongst students. The Ministry of Education still requires a medical certificate if a child is absent for three or more days sick. All absences, including a reason must be phoned through to the school office on Ph 5333731 before the school day begins.

Thank you We would like to say a huge thank you to Julie and David Smith for their very generous donation towards purchasing a starting gun for our school athletics. Thank you for supporting Pongakawa School.

School Canteen Notice Please note that the canteen will remain open for business up to and including 17th December 2019. Loretta will reopen on the first day back next year 3rd February 2020. Thank you for

your support for the canteen throughout the year.

Junior Christmas Party 12th December 2019 from 1.00pm to 2.45pm

A notice has gone home today around this event. Helpers are needed for this to go ahead. Please contact Catherine Rollerson If you are able to assist in any way Ph 021 419892.

School Readers and Library Books ALL School Readers, Journal Books and Library books need to be returned to school by 6th December 2019 at the latest for our final end of year audit. Any library books not returned will be charged to students school account for the replacement cost of the book. Your assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.
