To install Microsoft Server 2003 Standard Edition, the student needs to perform the following steps:

1. Insert the Windows 2003 Standard Edition CD and boot the computer. You may be asked to "Press any key to boot from the CD..." at which point you should hit a key to allow the operating system setup to load. A series of primary installation screens will load the setup installer environment which will stop on the following screen.

2. To continue the setup press ENTER and continue to the next screen.

3. Hit F8 to agree to the EULA and continue to the next screen.

4. The above screen may appear differently on your installation. Consult with your instructor if you see more than one partition or drive visible to ensure that you select the correct one. Once you have the correct drive selected you may hit C to create a partition in the unpartitioned space that will take you to the next screen.

6. The partition preview screen should show your newly created partition at the size you specified. Due to significant bit rounding, the number you see may be a few digits higher or lower than what you initially selected. Hit ENTER with your newly created partition selected to go to the partition formatting screen.

7. Choose the file format specified by your instructor. In order to ensure that all of the security features of the operating system are optimized, choose NTFS as the file system. If this area of the disk was formatted before, you may choose the "Quick" option. A new disk or partition usually should be formatting using the traditional format option. Choose the correct formatting option and press ENTER to go through the following process.

8. Once the formatting process is finished, setup will begin automatically copying files to the newly formatted partition as shown in the following.

9. After the file copy process is complete the system will restart. You may either press enter to allow it to restart or let the countdown restart it for you. After the restart is successful, the system will reboot into a GUI installation screen similar to the following.

10. After producing a few splash screen updates a status bar will appear while the system discovers and installs the drivers for known devices. The regional setup and language options screens will appear.

12. Enter your Name and Organization in the text boxes and then click "Next" to go to the following screen.

13. Enter the product key provided to you by your instructor or located on your media package and press "Next" to go to the following screen.

14. Choose the correct radio button for the proper licensing method (usually per server) and select an appropriately high number of concurrent connections (usually 10 or more). Click "Next" to go to the following screen.

15. Enter the name of your server and choose an administrator password that is sufficient for your needs. You may want to either write the password down or consult with your instructor on a password appropriate for your use. Repeat the password in the confirmation box and then click "Next" to go to the following screen. If you are prompted that your password does not meet minimum security requirements but you wish to use it anyway, just click "OK" in the dialog warning that appears.

16. In the date and time settings screen, select regionally appropriate settings and then click "Next" to go to the following screen.

17. Setup will install the networking components so long as the drivers are listed in the HAL. If prompted by an error, consult your instructor on a supplementary method for installing the NIC drivers. More than likely you will skip the network installation and install the NIC drivers after setup is completed if that is the case. Otherwise, the following screen will appear.

18. Choose "Typical Settings" unless instructed to do otherwise and click "Next" to go to the following screen.

19. Choose "No, .." and leave "WORKGROUP" in the text box for this installation unless you know that you are going to install it to an existing domain. You will be able to promote this server to domain membership later if that is necessary for your installation. Choose "Next" to go to the following screen where windows will begin another file copy process and save the settings you just entered.

20. After the installation completes it will again reboot and you will receive the Windows 2003 Server logon screen.
